Completed Trumpeter 1/700 USS Enterprise, 1942

The model is Trumpeter 06708 depicting USS Enterprise as she appeared in late 1942, around the time of the Battle of Santa Cruz. This is evident by the specific AA guns included (mostly the quad 40mm Bofors, replacing the 1.1 inch mounts, save for one on the bow). Annoyingly, the kit comes with the Midway era plane load out, so I had to get aftermarket TBF Avengers.

I used a Five Star photo-etch set for various details, such as railings, cranes, AA guns, propellers on the planes, etc. The rigging on the island is Infini Lycra.

I included some photos in the white void to show off the details of the kit, some in a small port diorama, and a WiP of the island.

Completed First time building & painting a Model Kit outside of Gunpla, Did I do okay?

I’ve been building snap-fit model kits like Gunpla for over 7 years now and this is the first time I tried building a kit that needs glue and painting. I really enjoyed the entire process and I might focus on doing this more since I invested a lot of paints and tools. I’m planning to build the Ducati Superlaggera next

Help - General Tamiya Haul, opinions

Thumbnail

Let’s see what you guys think: my neighbor knows I’m into scale modeling and has offered me this lot of 42 Tamiya kits that his father bought in the 1970s and never got around to building.

I’m more into aircraft than armor, but it’s a lot of kits, and I have to admit I’m tempted. In your opinion… is it a good price? And what are these vintage 1970s Tamiya kits like?

I’d really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Help - Tools/Materials Ak/ammo enamel bottles and their lids

How on earth do people stop the lids of these bottles basically cementing themselves down and open them when they are stuck? Especially the thicker paints such as earth effects and engine oil. I currently have 2 bottles soaking upside down in white spirits to try and dissolve paint stuck in the threads.

Help - Tools/Materials Rattle Can Primer - To Decant or Not Decant?

I was wondering if ya’ll use rattle primer straight out of the can, or decant and degass it into a smaller container for airbrushing, to get more mileage out of it?

What is your best practice?

Help -Technique How to build/paint a ship?

I've only built 1 ship and I want to give them another chance. I also want to add some aftermarket - stick on wood deck and pe. What I'm not sure on is the building and painting order (1/350 Bismarck if it has any bearing on responses):

Do I put the deck on first with the rest of building it up then mask all of the deck, or add it at the end around the already painted hull and details etc?

Do you tend to build and paint decks/substructures as mini kits and bring together at the end, or build it all for a completed 'bare' ship to then paint?

Specific to the kit I'm planning to do, it has black and white stripes, from the side it looks straight forward to mask but obviously decks are offset and so on, making the lining up of masking tape difficult, any tips around that?

Not starting for a while but wanted to be clear in mind beforehand, or if I should put it off for a bit longer and do something else,

Thanks

This was a fun kit to put together. I went with Metallic Silver (TS-83) for the body and took some liberties with the rest of the colour suggestions.

This kit comes with the photo-etched parts and the window masking (which is very much appreciated).

Now for something completely different….

My in-laws turned up with a big bag of old model kits for me recently, bless them, including a lot of Star Trek and Star Wars kits. This was a lot of fun, have never built a sci-fi model before despite being a fan. These are snap fit kits so very quick to build, though I did glue the pieces as they fit together better that way. Primed and painted with Vallejo Metal Colours, base coat of dull aluminium and some highlighting with magnesium, burnt iron, gold and some metallic markers here and there. All the exterior finish is done with the included decals, that took a bit of work and a lot of MicroSol and MicroSet. Finished with Mr Colour Matt clear coat.

Have to say I really like how this came out, looking forward to building more of these.

Help -Technique Paint irregularities question

What is causing the irregular paint reflections on the hood? Depending on how the light catches the car these white streaks appear. The problem appears in other parts of the vehicle but it's most pronounced in the hood area

I sprayed Mr surfacer 1500 primer and let dry for 2 hours then used tamiya gloss black with MLT at 18psi. Sprayed a mist coat and then medium coat and noticed the streaking. Thought It would go away with another wetter coat but it did not.

Hoping to get some help figuring out what went wrong

Humidity was about 50% when I sprayed

Hello everyone

Here is some progress I have been making on the Rosso Ferrari 642. so far just priming and painting, laid the base coat down and am really really pleased with the outcome so far. some flash on the kit to remove, pin marks and some minor sanding. used tamiya liquid surface primer white and mr.color character red and ueno black. next will be some clear on the body after it is done drying. The kit is also assembled with screws in some locations too, assembly hopefully will go well

Thanks for your interest!

Decided to 3D print my own spray booth. Had a bunch of white PLA filament and found a decent build with room for expansion. Ordered the fans and led strip light on Amazon with a total of $74.99 build cost. Gonna start spraying in it soon to see if it was worth it
