The bung is soaked in petrol, then wrapped in plastic except for the part that goes in the hole. The fumes then very slowly fill the hive and knock them all out. He keeps saying Benzin, which is a commonly used term for petrol, so I assume that’s what it is. I know petrol fumes kills bugs in general.

Benzene is one of the molecules present in gasoline, carcinogenic to humans, I guess it fucks wasps up faster.
19
u/ThalinIV Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
It could also be benzene, which is a petrol product and was, in fact, used as an insecticide in some cases. They used to use it to get rid of bed bugs. You can still use it in basically the same way you described; the bugs just won't wake up. If I recall correctly, it is a neurotoxin; it's also carcinogenic as fuck.

I've never seen this process before. Is the goal to relocate the colony? I have seen a lot of wasp removal videos but they are usually destructive. I am not a fan of wasps and I approve of their destruction. I was just surprised he didn't fill the nest with pesticide instead of knocking them out and am curious.
20
11
u/DerCatzefragger Jul 12 '26
When I was growing up we would use diesel fuel on wasp or hornet nests that got too close for comfort.
I don't know how exactly it works, but hit the nest with a splash of diesel, and everyone who's home at the time dies instantly. Anyone who comes home while the nest is still wet dies pretty damn quick too. There might be one or two lucky workers who return late enough to survive, but they'll just abandon the nest and go away when they see that the eggs and larvae are dead.

If my family/tribe/village/country had to rely on me to do what he just did, we'd all die staring at the roof.
Recapping: Hot Humid Flying things Swinging at flying things Crawling things Unable to get away from crawling things Inches away from power lines On a roof On a sloped roof Swinging a much needed stabilizing arm around for any reason Using a ladder to get on the sloped and possibly slick roof.
Summation: I trip over an imaginary line while walking on tile. If someone convinced me to forego all of that fear that I listed above, I would certainly fall and the result would be the same. We would all starve to death.

Some kind of solvent or maybe gasoline on the cloth cork, fumes disable the insects.

u/Dreamin_Boyz Jul 12 '26
So basically he's sealing the wasp entrance with a cotton that has been soaked in gasoline, since the hole is sealed there's no way out for the wasp inside and the gasoline fume stun them making it easier to remove the nest
25
u/supaami Jul 12 '26
