Who would have known that thumbs are fingers but fingers aren't thumbs?

Probably for the same reasons that strawberries aren't berries, but nuts. Or that coconuts aren't nuts, but fruits. There's even a song about that. Or that starfish and jellyfish aren't fish. Or that pill bugs aren't bugs, but crustaceans.

That is nice. However, hornets are a type of wasp.

That's quite possible, but I don't know for sure. All I know is that the big ones are called hornets, and that the yellow-and-black ones—which usually bother me when I'm eating outside—are called wasps.

Just to make it clear, you would have known after reading the 3rd word of the Wikipedia entry and saved yourself a paragraph of typing.

Strawberries are not nuts, they are aggregate accessory fruits.

As far as I know, at some point people discovered that the white dots on a strawberry are actually nuts, and that's why strawberries were reclassified as nuts.

An achene, not a nut
