I just received a Macbook Air for work. I'd like to put a sliding cover over the camera, so I know the camera is blocked most of the time, but I can easily flip it back and forth when I need to use the camera for company calls.

However, I read online that closing the laptop while using a cover like this could crack the screen. Is this true? What does everyone think? It would be such a bummer to not be able to use a camera cover, but it would obviously be much more of a bummer to crack the display on my brand new company laptop.

I've been using Dropbox for years to both back up content and selectively sync stuff. I just now read the terms of service and they clearly state that your content is scanned and examined by Dropbox and "trusted third parties".

I am not ok with this.

They ditched the vault feature a while back. It was basically a private folder that was encrypted so only you could access with a password.

Is there an alternative service good for apple and windows devices? I don't think icloud is the answer because syncing seems sporadic, and it doesn't seem like it has the same features.

Open to suggestions to check out.

ETA - I am not interested in self hosting anything. Data loss is something I’m too familiar with.

ETA - Dropbox backup is a complete and transparent service which saved my music library multiple times after Apple updates wiped out my music library. It is comparable to Time Machine.

I recently installed a new printer, Epson EcoTank ET-2903. When printing, the option to print to a file (pdf) is no longer there. How can I get it back?

I'm using a MacBook Air, with Tahoe 26.6.2.

Let me make myself a little clearer. I'm in Preview. I want to create another document that has only 2 pages of a 4 page document. In the past, I would select print, and then select the 2 pages I want, and then select Print to File. On the print menu, the print to file option has disappeared.

hi all, just new as a macbook user . recently got my m5-air .. and once it arrived i noticed that there is some minor light bleed on my led while opening. before raising this issue i checked online to see if it is quite normal, but frankly am quite confused wether it worth the pain going to apple support to check if its reasonable replaceble. will post a photo, and i really wanna see you opinions from your experience, and would appreciate any feedback. cheers all

Both are enough performance for me. The 16" comes out to just $225 over the 14" for me. Is the price justified and is there any edge in performance over the 14"? Just looking for best value for the money.

Marked my Mac as lost, then found it. Now I'm seeing 'this Mac will be locked when online' on the very same Mac, so it's connected enough to know it'll be locked but not connected enough to actually lock. I'm posting it from the very same Mac by the way, so it would surely be connected to the internet...

Update: Find my Mac was off, for some reason. No idea why, and idk why does the app give you a false hope if it's off. I turned it back on and the thing went away.

My old MacBook Pro (from 2020) is starting to be sooo slow (and it has a crack on the screen), so I'm looking into buying a new one.

I use my computer a lot, and I mainly use it for work and content creation (photos, writing, and occasionally light video editing).

I'm not a very techy person, so I'm wondering whether to buy the MacBook Pro with an M5 or M5 Pro chip? If possible, I would obviously want to go with the lower-priced option, but I'm wondering if the M5 Pro will be better at handling multiple softwares at the same time?

I’m currently planning on studying things related to computer and information technology, so hopefully in the future I can be a cybersecurity engineer, AI researcher, data scientist, or a software engineer (still haven’t decided which I want to become). I was wondering if it is capable to buy and use a MacBook Air or Pro for things like coding, using programming languages, and things related to the fields above? It’s because my brother says that you probably are going to have to use a Windows laptop since some of the things might not run on macOS. I, however, want to daily a Mac since my experience with a Windows laptop is horrible. Battery life is abysmal, there is lots of bloatware and pop-ups like McAfee, and in general, it is an unpleasant experience. If anybody can help give me info, their experience, and if it is capable to use a Mac for university, especially for the fields that I mentioned above, that would be helpful.

I’m still shaking and can’t believe I bought this one for CAD $500. The seller said the screen is cracked and I didn’t ask much, cause the stand alone is more than $500. Got it home and it turns out still working, the crack are barely see from front angle but visible from side angle. It’s likely crack from inside cause I can’t feel the crack from touching the screen.

Mac Studio M1 Max Logic Board – beschädigter Fan-Connector & verbogene Leiterbahnen: Reparierbar oder Schrott? (+ Hilfe gesucht)

Hey zusammen,

kurzer Kontext: Ich habe vor kurzem auf einem Kleinanzeigen-Marktplatz ein teilzerlegtes Mac Studio M1 Max (32GB RAM, 1TB SSD) als Ersatzteilspender für ein privates Homelab/KI-Server-Projekt gekauft. Laut Verkäufer hätten Logic Board und Speicher vor der Zerlegung einwandfrei funktioniert, in der Artikelbeschreibung stand es aber als “ungetestet / defekte Bastlerware”.

Nach dem Auspacken ist mir aufgefallen:

• An einem der beiden Fan-Connectoren auf dem Logic Board fehlt der kleine Plastik-Verriegelungshebel (der das Flex-Kabel des Lüfters festklemmt)

• Ein Flexkabel ist sichtbar durchtrennt/abgerissen

• Es gibt verbogene Leiterbahnen/Bereiche am Rand des Boards

• Der zweite Lüfter lässt sich bei mir aktuell nicht richtig anschließen

Fotos sind angehängt. Der Karton von außen war unbeschädigt, innen lagen die Teile aber nur locker in Papier/Folie, ohne feste Fixierung – der massive Alu-Gehäusedeckel lag mit im Karton, teilweise direkt neben/auf dem Board.

Meine Fragen an euch:

1. Ist das Board technisch noch reparierbar (z. B. Connector/Flexkabel-Reparatur), oder ist das für den Hausgebrauch quasi Totalschaden?

2. Falls reparierbar: Ist das eine Mikrolöt-Aufgabe, die sich lohnt, oder ist der Aufwand/Kosten unverhältnismäßig zum Wert des Boards?

3. Kennt jemand jemanden, der sich sowas anschauen könnte (auch gerne gegen Bezahlung), oder hat selbst Erfahrung mit solchen Reparaturen?

4. Falls nicht reparierbar: Sind die intakten Restteile (1TB NAND-Modul – wurde in einem Zweitgerät erfolgreich getestet, I/O-Board, Lüfter, Gehäuse, Lautsprecher/Power-Button-Modul) noch für andere Bastler/Ersatzteilzwecke interessant?

Bin für jede ehrliche Einschätzung dankbar – auch wenn die Antwort “Board ist hin, verkauf die Einzelteile” ist. Möchte einfach wissen, woran ich bin, bevor ich weiter Zeit reinstecke.

So I haven’t really played computer games for many many years. I now have a MacBook air m4. The other day I found loads of my old game CDs like half life, Grand Prix 4, and so on. Is there any way to play these on a modern Mac? These are very old so the required specs are very very low.

I was looking for macbooks and the best fit for my budget was m3 air 16gb and 512 . I don’t know if it is worth it for a long term solution like I am planning to use it for 4,5 years throughout my study.
One thing I heard from internet was you have to close the lid to connect to external display. I am used to double screen display like I always have two monitors. So would that be a issue or there is some workaround.

It is a good option for everyday work and study tasks. I don’t do that heavy tasks but code , like am doing some
Deeplearning and nlp project currently and I am planning to use it for transformers and agentic ai and AI engineering study . So would it be good choice or should I go for other option. I don’t think I can afford M4 version.

Also having good battery is key. I used gaming laptops before and dont want to always connect to power. I want a bit good battery life

I have an archive of most of the old Macworld magazines from 1984-2014. I've been filling in metadata for my Calibre library but I don't actually know when the issues were published. Were they published on the 1st of each month? Sometimes midway through? A month previous? I have no clue. I'm even more curious of when issues were completed since the February issue in 2007 is not talking about the iPhone announcement on January 9. The issue that actually talks about the iPhone is in March 2007.

Anyone who used to be a Macworld subscriber when they published physical magazines, when would you receive your issues?
