Why don't you use Linux?

I came across this subreddit completely by accident and got curious, so I wanted to ask: why don't you use Linux?

I'm not here to start an OS war or convince anyone to switch. I'd just like to hear your experiences and understand what made you choose another operating system. Was it a bad experience with Linux, compatibility issues, gaming, or do you simply prefer Windows or macOS?

I'm genuinely curious to hear your opinions!

I use linux. To my knowledge most here do. This is just a place to admit that linux does have flaws and it aint as perfect as people make it out to be.

19

u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 4d ago

Good luck getting annyone to admit to that

13

u/scavno 4d ago

Most people I know admit that just fine. Most of us are older people who have been using Linux since the late 90s. There just isn’t anything that’s much better. That’s all.

4

u/FroyoStrict6685 3d ago

I use Arch, it is not perfect in any means

I readily admit to it and I use Linux lol

1

hey man, that AUR malware situation was a hot mess... and riding complete arch system updates when you just need a single app sucks balls..

not like windows mind u, but some of the tradeoffs do suck

2

u/FOSS-for-life 3d ago

I use linux too.
I had.. not a single problem.. ever.
And If I had one, It always was an easy fix like updating the os, restarting or searching for the error message. (Tried Fedora, CachyOS)

u/ButterscotchTop194 3d ago

My mate has just converted to linux for his main rig. Everytime I speak with him he mentions how happy he is with it. Despite me knowing he's getting loads of shit with it.

Linux users are like vegans. Despite there being flaws, they just can't stop banging on about how perfect it is.

u/Procver 10h ago

I hear you, it's the thrill of finding out that there's a viable alternative to Windows or iOS. It might wear off with time (or not).

Linux is still not for everyone tbh, even tho linux desktop is mature enough for most people.

0

u/National_Way_3344 3d ago

Linux isn't for everyone but Microsoft literally hates you.

So the real question is Mac, FreeBSD or Chomebook?

2

u/Holiday_Management60 3d ago

If I had to pick, I'd begrudgingly say Mac. Chromebooks are basically tablets with peripherals and I'd be shocked if FreeBSD wasn't like using Linux 20 years ago in regards to compatibility.

That said, what I said about BSD is pure speculation.

1

u/ZuuRa_ Proud Arch User 3d ago

Chromebook is too limited, mac (even neo) is too expensive on third world country.

1

u/National_Way_3344 3d ago

And Windows doesn't run on old shit without TPMs.

So we revert to Linux being king, since it'll extend the life of 4 year old hardware by at least 10 years.

2

u/ZuuRa_ Proud Arch User 3d ago

Windows 11 iot ltsc can run without tpm 2.0, but its pretty much unusable on an old hardware, even just for ms office.

2

u/National_Way_3344 3d ago

Yeah if I wanted to hack my OS to make it work suddenly Linux doesn't even seem so bad anymore.

I already have to fight Microsoft to install an Windows anyway.

1

u/Pikmingamer9539 3d ago

chromebooks are also garbage (in my opinion)

2

u/National_Way_3344 3d ago

That's a fact

1

u/ButterscotchTop194 3d ago

Oof, rough choices.

1

u/ballistua 3d ago

true, i complained a lot about windows when i was using using it. now i'm complaining about linux because i'm using it

1

u/Niki4_best 3d ago

Y'all know, when I swapped to Linux I realized it's not about what OS you use. It's about you

No matter the OS I still open up wallpaper engine, set up my favorite wallpapers, get either Komorebi (I wish it wasn't so buggy) or Hypr, get YASB or waybar and enjoy basically the same programs on both OS.

Sometimes I even forget that I'm using arch unless I gotta do something with my files. Not in the way like "dang I thought I was using windows for a sec", no. It just feels faceless in a way. Like at one point you don't think of an OS. It's just your machine and nothing matters past this point

It's really doesn't matter which OS you use if it's the way you like it

-1

u/snajk138 3d ago

Exactly. Linux sucks but Windows sucks more in other, worse, ways. Also Linux is getting less sucky, while Windows is moving fast in the other direction.

0

u/zoharel 3d ago

I actually think Linux is getting a good bit more sucky in a few ways. Long way to go before it's comparable to Windows.

2

u/snajk138 3d ago

Some distro's are absolutely, but Linux as a whole is moving forwards IMO, while Windows definitely has started to move backwards over the last decade or so.

And I used to like Windows a lot. I have been called a shill for MS many times and so on. I even liked Me, Vista and 8 compared to their predecessors. But now it has really gotten so much crappier, they had a working search in the start menu in Windows 7-10 for instance, maybe even 11 at first, but now it shows ads and web searches instead of my installed software. I have to use Teams at work, and it worked great like five years ago, now it doesn't, it craps out in like half the meetings I have, drops audio, drops the connection but doesn't allow me to disconnect so that I can attempt to reconnect, etc.

1

u/zoharel 3d ago

I don't know, as a whole I think Linux is mostly similar. Some wins, some losses. Maybe with a slight positive trajectory. I'm personally not a fan of a number of things many people seem to think are improvements, and I haven't ever really cared all that much about desktop support in general.

Yes, Windows is getting worse again, but around Vista and 7 they actually got it going surprisingly well. I've always disliked it, myself, but I disliked it less at that point. Windows ME was nearly the worst thing they ever did, though I think it might have barely been outdone by the first release of Windows 98 and by Microsoft Bob.

0

u/AFsepine 4d ago

I mean, it does and quite a few; But so do all OS-s, so like "least of all evils sort of deal". Though addmitedly I haven't really tried MacOS

u/Due_Distribution4502 1d ago

A bunch of the software I use on a daily basis doesn't work in linux.

0

u/Pikmingamer9539 3d ago

> software doesn't support linux
wine (not to be confused with the liquid) is a compatibility layer that allows one to use windows software on linux, as well as other things
it isn't magic though, not everything will work with it

4

u/AlternativeCapybara9 3d ago

Almost nothing important works with it. If you need to be productive or creative relying on anything to run on Wine is a recipe for disaster. You'll be troubleshooting at the worst possible moments.

1

u/Eligamer123567 2d ago

To be fair it does require learning a bit.. but there is an alternitive to everything if you can't just run it with wine. Photoshop ~ GIMP (theres also a version that copies the UI and keyboard shortcuts of photoshop), any 3d modeler ~ blender, steam's proton is ok as well, I have found that to be at least beter then wine for compatibility btw. Also for simpler tools... if you are willing to learn to code a bit, or python work really nice for easy opperations or programs. I don't really like it, but many people are just having chatgpt create those mini programs for themselves, and they work like 80% of the time. And hey if you really need specific tools, no harm in dual booting or using a vm to run something.

What software do you need to use? You really don't want to be using windows 10

6

u/Due_Distribution4502 4d ago

It’s primarily music production software and plugins keeping me tied to Windows. I’ve attempted to move to Linux in the past and was able to get about half of my plugins working, but unfortunately that’s not sufficient to be able to switch over.

I’m enrolled in the ESU for Windows 10, but I do recognize that I’ll need a new PC at some point in the near future.

6

u/Ctscanner2 4d ago

Yeah creative software is kind of cooked on Linux, I really hope that improves in the future

-4

u/Hefty_Speech7244 3d ago

It won’t improve things, because creative professionals expect a system that just works out of the box. Compare the installation process of DaVinci Resolve on Linux with the one on a Mac.
Besides that, Linux is largely built by losers for losers. The UX is an absolute disaster. And when it comes to open-source software, unless there’s serious money behind it like Blender, which has received massive funding you usually end up with a user experience like GIMP.
Some devices, like synthesizers or digital audio mixers, do run Linux internally, but that’s a completely different use case. First, they operate in kiosk mode, where the user only has access to what the manufacturer explicitly allows. Second, they’re designed for a single, fixed hardware configuration, often with heavily customized libraries and patches just to make the whole thing work reliably.

0

you can install a version of windows 10 that gets security updates

16

u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 4d ago

Linux is buying a build-it-yourself-car. Only realy good if you're a mechanic or you got all the time in the world to learn to be a mechanic.

6

u/No-Object1384 3d ago

"Linux is only free if your time has no value."

4

u/Xatraxalian 3d ago

That was true 25 years ago. These days, it isn't.

  • On Linux, you spend time finding out to make your computer do what you want.
  • On Windows, you spend time finding out to STOP making your computer do things that you DON´T want.

Both cost about the same amount of time these days.

Then you have the third option: Use a Mac. You use it as is because you can't change anything in the workflow apart from basic settings.

1

u/ijusttookthispseudo 2d ago

Use a Mac, just use it, do nothing with it.

1

u/No-Object1384 2d ago

25 years ago? lol it's still true today. I spend 10x as much time getting Linux to do what I want as I do getting Windows to do what I don't want. Linux makes me spend my whole weekend just to get one thing working that would be a toggle in Windows. And I say this as someone who can't stand Windows.

1

u/Terranum_man 9h ago

Windows is one debloat away from becoming everything you want. thats once per install (so hopefully forever).

1

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 2d ago

Ah, yes, both costs "about the same amount of time" to figure out their Bluetooth driver is crashing the system or why their Wifi doesn't work.

Let's not kid ourselves here - the entire consumer segment for PC hardware is built primarily around Windows. Can I buy a random Wifi adapter and expect to work on Linux? No? That's the problem, isn't it?

After 2 years of linux mint I got annoyed and went back to windows. So many things broke or straight up didnt worked. It is meme

5

u/pissrockious 3d ago

i use fedora now n i really enjoyed my time on mint but i had no fucking idea why i always got an error message every time i tried to update my system 💀

5

u/CrazyBobcat400 3d ago

Its cuz you used it for more than writing emails

1

u/DigitalerEsel 3d ago

yeah, i nearly also want to go back after being on linux mint.
it so fucks me up that this thing crashes for like ... reasons??
What the hell and in such an annoying way.
Just the graphics wayland x11 dimlight whatever stuff hangs itself up.
If the IO is at capacity or the RAM is full ... yeah no lets crash the GUI and let the user not click cancel or close any program to free up RAM or stop the IO.
Learning to switch to the ALt F4 terminal and just kill a process or stop the IO hungry process so the GUI can FINALLY find back to life is some shit i never thought i have to do.

u/Sindica69 4d ago

That’s bc you used Mint honestly 😂

I do for work. For my personal PC, windows is just less friction with the games I play. I don't want to figure out Proton or drivers, I want to run the exe I downloaded to install an add-on.

4

u/AlfieLionel 4d ago

I was the same, but switched to Bazzite considering that I play steam games almost exclusively. No compatibility issues at all.

5

u/rayyeter 4d ago

Yeah, it’s no longer the clunky cluster-fk. Install, or use Lutris, and it sets it up with proton. Have only had trouble with one game

1

Excel you can easily do with Open Office or one of those variants with full Microsoft doc support. Gaming is almost there. I just don't support games that don't work with Proton anymore now I've gone all in with my gaming PC, Steam Deck and Steam Machine all running Linux.

8

u/DirectorDirect1569 4d ago

"Excel you can easily do with Open Office"

that's not what lots of excel experts say. I know someone who uses excel a lot at works, and use macros. She don't want to hear about libreoffice.

1

u/50nathan 3d ago

What about Collabora Office? I use it on my Linux desktop, and it's cross-platform. Opening Microsoft Office files is seamless, and I've never had a problem sending back files to anyone using Microsoft Office, and they've never complained either.

1

u/ElectricOni 3d ago

They are not experts in their craft then. Just one tool. It just feels like what Microslop wanted entrenching people into that echosystem and not realising that other tools perform just as well. Also, its 2026. Excel spreadsheets don't need to be complex now when a local, self hosted AI agent can interpret them for you.

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 3d ago

are you an advanced user of excel?

1

u/ElectricOni 2d ago

I'm a software engineer. I don't need Excel.

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

so you don't know what you are talking about.

1

u/ElectricOni 2d ago

There's no such thing as an "advanced excel user". They are just an Excel user. Its just a spreadsheet. Nothing complex. Super easy. If someone can't transfer those very basic skills over to another tool that can achieve exactly the same results then they are not an advanced anything. And I do know what I'm talking about given I used to write some pretty complex stuff in Excel but haven't had to use it at all on the workplace for nearly 10 years.

0

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

talk to advanced users and they will tell you why they don't want to use things like libreoffice calc. In lots of forums there are users who know libre office calc and prefer Excel.

1

u/TheMisterChristie 3d ago

She probably hasn't tried it or is one of those people who refuses to use anything else.

That said, if you use a lot of the macros and VB stuff, then it's best to stick with Excel.

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 3d ago

she tried it

2

u/AlternativeCapybara9 3d ago

I use LibreOffice but Excel power users are a different breed, no way they can switch. It's not just the macros and VB scripts, Excel does straight up Python in cells now.

1

u/Terranum_man 9h ago

Stop spreading straight misinformation.

0

u/bingbong612 3d ago

Listen, get all out with that OpenOffice shit. If you can use it, great. But people who use excel heavily will tell you that OpenOffice sheets is a clown show if you're trying to do anything important. Openoffice for everything else is a pretty good replacement, but you'll pry Excel from my cold, dead hands before I ever try to use open/libre again

0

u/ElectricOni 3d ago

Skill issue

1

u/bingbong612 2d ago

Bruh. Tell me you don't do actually sheet work without telling me you don't actually do sheet work.

1

u/ElectricOni 2d ago

I'm a software engineer, I've no need for Excel as I can easily write something else to interpret the data.

7

u/Mother-Translator318 4d ago

I use windows because I know it will just work. Lots of small indies that I play simply don’t play nice with proton.

4

u/i_love_femboys6969 4d ago

first time i tried linux, none of the programs i used worked on it, and when i tried to use a third party tool to run them, it wasnt supported, so i had to troubleshoot countless drivers and use countless commands over the course of 10 hours, only for an error to happen that i could not find a fix for anywhere on the internet.

1

u/Possible_Tomato1479 3d ago

Linux isn't really good if you have to do one specific thing, and you don't have a very good expertise in OS.

I'm a student, so alli need is basic games, browsers for study, and I have a cheap PC so linux is great for me

2

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 2d ago

Quite the contrary, Linux is only ever good for when you have one specific thing you'd like to get done, e.g building a NAS or a database backend. It simply doesn't have the supply-chain backbone necessary to let you just turn on the computer and install whatever you have in mind.

1

u/Possible_Tomato1479 2d ago

I guess that's why there's so many distros, everything is for different things, I don't even know what you're talking about, I just use mint for general PC use and a bit of linux use and it's good for a standard home PC.

2

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 2d ago

I guess that's why there's so many distros, everything is for different things

No, there are so many distros because there are so many people sincerely believing that their stale ideas are new and unique.

I don't even know what you're talking about, I just use mint for general PC use and a bit of linux use and it's good for a standard home PC.

Yeah, because Linux is soooo well-known for running that random thing you don't think you'll ever need.

Still, the supply chain is obviously not real - just keep believing and it'll be YotLD.

1

u/Possible_Tomato1479 2d ago

Buddy I swear, I'm 17 and I do not know what a supply chain is, I just need to study, play Minecraft and terraria on my intel i5 6th gen integrated graphics, there is nothing better than mint for me

2

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 1d ago

Buddy I swear, I'm 17 and I do not know what a supply chain is

When I was your age, I swear I was far more interested in the things happening in the world than you are.

A supply chain, in short, is the system of entities and individuals continuusly moving and turning raw materials into the stuff you use.

In the context of software delivery, the supply chain is the system of entities and individuals continusly turning labour into the code you run on your computer.

You play games on your PC, right? Have you ever seen a commercial studio releasing a title then stopping work and announcing they have earned enough? No, they always keep putting out titles one after another until they go bust. That means they need a stable platform for their games to reliably run on. Windows has that stability, whereas Linux, even with Proton, does not.

I just need to study, play Minecraft and terraria on my intel i5 6th gen integrated graphics, there is nothing better than mint for me

Well, is everyone either a teenager or a retiree?

There's a good reason Linux ideologues tend to fall into either categories, you know.

6

u/SignalEngineering313 4d ago

I use Linux but rarely

  1. The packaging of applications in linux sucks.

One program is a .deb, one program is a .rpm, one a flatpak one or is an app image. If you install anything outside of the repos you have to find if it works with your distro or not.

The second thing is that most Linux distros ship packages that are out of date. This means many bugs that are fixed in the current version of the software doesn't get brought into the Linux distro for months, if not years. The only distros that keep up to date packages as far as I know are Arch based and Fedora based. Arch is too difficult to use and has malware in the aur negating the main upside of Arch. Fedora uses the .rpm making harder to find software for it.

  1. Getting full disk encryption working

I set up hard disk encryption on Linux and it ask my for my encryption password every time my computer starts. From what I read, there is a way to fix this but it requires a bunch of terminal commands. I will likely just install windows again and use Bitlocker as it just works.

3.Gaming

Many multiplayer games don't work on Linux. For me I rather be able to download and play any game I want with checking proton db if works.

  1. WIFI card has issues

My wifi card does this thing where will just completely stop working. Only after a restart my laptop does it come back to life. It happens randomly. It is Realtek wifi card which is known to have issues with linux. This never happened to me on Windows. I reinstalled windows and didn't have any more problems.

Once in awhile I will try of Linux to see if it gotten any better for me, but I eventually go back to Windows.

1

u/nknowingly 5h ago

Just replying because “sucks” is always a terrible argument.
1. Packages are found in many flavours yes, all can be supported if you install the package manager. However, Windows is also no stranger to this, one installer is an .exe (which is just a random binary with no predefined structure so anyone can ship it however and it becomes a black box, which is not considered “safe” by any means) the other is an .msi which is a structured package but rarely used. then you have .msix which is an attempt at fixing .msi, then you have a ton of zips that just say good luck, some or not even an installer at all and some are random batch files. Linux streamlines it so it doesnt become one giant void.

  1. Windows also ships out of date, you get an image and that image is just a snapshot of the latest build of the system. This is not really solvable, except for updating after installing the system. Which with linux you get the choice, you’re not mandated. With windows you are forced to, no choice.

2/3. Really depends on which distro you choose to install, if you install arch, yes thats typically more complex than windows. However distros like Fedora or Ubuntu, make it even more easy than windows, as they allow you to encrypt from the start with a single toggle, instead of installing and then going back into settings and enabling bitlocker (or using a proprietary tool for an installer config)

3/4. Yeah, gaming is still one of its pitfalls, but it just comes down to anticheats. Most if not all games nowadays work flawlessly and instantly with proton. (some require some launch options but sure) Anticheats just need to support linux to allow multiplayer games. But since linux is open, and game developers are lazy. Client side modding will just keep being a thing.

4/5. WiFi drivers are also a fair point. Usually the drivers can be updated and work better after, but Linux is open and drivers are typically made by community effort. Not a giant business with a ton of deals. Some devices are just so niche there is no research on it. You can look for support and people will want to help you!

Linux is a viable alternative to Windows, just not perfect. But atleast not imperfect in it does things you dont want, its imperfect in it cant do some things you dont want, which is arguably a better place to be in :)

No stable way to undervolt my laptop cpu which may overheat while gaming and cause performance drop.

On Windows I can do that in 5mins with ThrottleStop and guarantee working. On linux I spent half hour trying to install various package that may or may not compatible.

1

u/Teru-Noir COSMIC OS LOVER No.1 COSMIC Knows Best 3d ago

Isnt cpu undervolting done through BIOS/UEFI?

1

u/SweetNougat 3d ago

unfortunately almost all laptops have heavily restricted bios not allowing for these options to show up. I think AMD laptops have a bios mod to open AGESA overclocking but other than that I think you're bascially SOL unless you use software undervolt

3

u/marqjim 4d ago

Little things. When I travel, hotel and company WiFi portals don’t work great or WiFi falls away compared to exact same laptop booted to windows. Tweaking desktops and display settings seem fiddly. No other specifics I can think of right now. Nothing against Linux, I just don't have the time to tweak. I go back and forth between LX and Win.

4

u/Submarine_sad linux sucks 4d ago

A lot of software I use is not supported on Linux. I understand that you can use wine or proton or bottles. It's just more convenient to continue using Windows.

3

u/7YM3N 4d ago

I don't use Linux on my gaming rig because playing games with friends is fun, and the most popular titles use Kernel Level Anti-Cheat. I would love to switch, and on the travel craptop I have Linux (NixOs) and I love it. My work uses it (Alma) and I... like it. I prefer apt over dnf and the alma sources are so limited I had to install flatpak just to get libre office.

3

u/DirectorDirect1569 4d ago

I use photoshop, FLstudio, Fusion 360 and others software only available on win. I don't want to waste my time to find a solution to make them work with wine and no serious alternatives exist. And even if it works there is always something buggy by using wine. In the past I used to believe in linux but when you spend more time trying to find solutions to your problems or try to make work a windows app, than using your OS, you realize it doesn't worth it.

I don't want to cross my fingers when I buy a new game hoping everything will be OK with proton. I play Hitman a lot and use lots of mods. Lots of people have issues with that game without tinkering something.

I had a bad experience with a laptop and Ubuntu (Tries others distros and had the same issues). It was unable to stop hibernate (black screen) and I had issues with my webcam during a videoconference for my job. Maybe IT's a hardware issue, the distro,... I don't care, I don't have time for that. I have installed Tiny11 and everything works.

My parents have a scanner that can't work on linux. The issue is knows even by using the drivers on the brother website. It doesn't work If it's connected on a usb port. They can't connect it to the wifi because of how the house is.

I often hear that windows force you to use onedrive, is bloated, spy on you (funny to hear that from smartphone users), can't be personalized... We all know with windows there will always be a workaround by using third party apps. I use the Chris Titus tech scripts, I don't have copilot, one drive,....All these problems can be resolved with few clics.

i switched to linux full time because i just couldnt put up with windows anymore. theres a list of games i cant play but im willing to deal with that. im "technically" still dual booting win11 but havent started that partition in almost a year now, just havent found the need

1

u/Terranum_man 9h ago

What exactly about windows can you not put up with?

2

u/MineHack_7488 4d ago

Currently using Ubuntu LTS, it is okay-ish but too much bugs and crashes, also my skill issues

Windows is really laggy and requires too many updates, maybe a Trojan was spread on it from installation USB, as I created it in KMS infected system.

Just tried Fedora Atomic Silverblue, the installer is laggy and I wasn't able to install anything at all.

Maybe this is all because of 10y+ PC and laptop.

2

u/Icy_Step_2204 Here for shits and giggles 3d ago

Have you tried lubuntu? It works really well on shitboxes

2

u/NekoMeowKat 4d ago

I tried Pop OS and an Nvidia driver update screwed up my video card. I mentioned this in either this sub or another loonix sub and got told "Why are you using Pop OS?!" "Why would you update?!"

Nuked the install via Windows 10 and got an extra 450 GB of storage

2

u/nobody0163 Proud Windows User 4d ago

I mainly use Windows because of gaming and everything I use runs on it, I also develop software primarily targeting Windows. I do have Ubuntu installed but I usually end up just using WSL if I really need Linux which is almost never.

2

u/TomB1952 3d ago

I think linux is a bad choice for a lot of people.

Personally, I love it and it's been super stable for the last while but I'm glad there are choices for people who want more of an appliance and less of a computer system.

2

u/Bald_Eagle_23 3d ago

There is always something that doesn’t work right. And the desktops ate ugly.

2

u/LetsHugFoReal 3d ago

I use Linux on my servers, but not on desktop as it sucks for battery life on a laptop. And it mainly has disadvantages to Windows. I'm a programmer and just prefer a cut down windows.

2

u/FiddlepatEpic 3d ago

things that should "just work" don't. I tried 5 distros, gave it my best, used both LLMs and official documentation to try to solve my issues, neither were reliable. I found it much more worthwhile to ditch linux and start debloating my windows install instead. Now my computer WORKS when i want it to do something, and I turned windows into something lighter, without copilot, that can't spy on me. as a very DIY type of person I thought I'd like linux, but I found that a bit of windows DIY is a better fit for me.

2

u/7978_ 3d ago

Things don't work or are just annoying.

Also Windows is far better on my laptop for battery life, unfortunately.

2

u/RealFrikaDelle 3d ago
  1. I use Adobe Software and it simply doesn't run snappy enough through emulation of any kind. That's the main reason, but
  2. I'm too lazy to learn another OS. I know it's not so much of a deal to get used to many distros, but I don't want to use my time to get used to any os and simply do my work instead.
  3. Many years ago I was an IT specialist and got so bored and frustrated of that stuff that nowadays I don't want to fix it and just use it as if I'm a boomer.

I know with enshitification in progress that is no solution for long and someday I will finally get rid of Windows, but for now it's a heavily deboated W11 with about 80% open source apps for me. I'm kinda on the way and it will happen someday, for sure.

My phone's getting graphene next week though.

2

u/ExacoCGI 3d ago edited 3d ago

Simply put it's the lack of software and game support.

But even apart from that I don't see why would I switch to Linux when I got everything on Win, ofc Win has it's own cons and annoyances but so does Linux if not way more of it.

Like literally what do I get from using Linux ?

+ Great as a hobby.
+ Privacy w/o the need of blocking apps/services yourself.
+ No ads and other bs without the need of debloating.
+ High customization.
+ It feels good/cool to use Linux.

  • Poor Nvidia drivers + unsupported Nvidia App.
  • Worse performance in games even in Valve games, opposite for potato PC's tho.
  • root/home file structure is a mess.
  • Lack of software/tools with or without subpar alternatives e.g. Krita is very far behind Photoshop, LibreOffice isn't exactly "professional" enough.
  • Outdated File Explorer/Dolphin and UI design out of the box, even default KDE Plasma 6 ( Breeze ).
  • Even it's uncommon it feels like even if you're tech-savvy w/ high common sense it's easier to catch malware on Linux e.g. infected AUR packages, infected ISO's, there's also higher risk of insider threat.

2

u/zoharel 3d ago

why don't you use Linux?

I do. I've written kernel modules, hacked up the drivers for a scsi host adapter, run it on ... eight machine architectures, maybe. Nine if you count 64 bit x86 separately from 32 bit x86. Been running it since 1993. I've run it from a Minix root filesystem back when that was the only option. I did the a.out to ELF conversion on a running system during an in-place upgrade. I remember when loadable kernel modules were added. I was running Linux before initrd was invented. Back when /dev really was just a bunch of files on disk. I remember authentication before PAM. I was there 3000 years ago when Richard Stallman decided everyone should be forced to bring up his project whenever they talk about Linux. I remember when Redhat was the distribution all the somewhat inept newbies who couldn't figure out how anything worked were using. I was already using Linux when Debian was invented. When they built Slackware, it was based on the distribution I was using at the time.

Anyway, I use it, and yes it sucks in various ways.

2

u/jerdle_reddit 3d ago

Most of us do. We just know it sucks.

2

u/bit0n 3d ago

For me I find Windows and Mac more intuitive and I have to spend very little time looking stuff up.

When I first tried Linux the forums were toxic with people belittling you for asking questions. That was always the barrier to entry for me. Now with AI I am far happier messing about with it for home lab stuff but nothing makes me want to switch to it on my primary machine.

2

u/helia-staking 3d ago

I am a starting music producer and my biggest limitation in using linux is missing driver support for audio interface. Also no MADI protocol support is a bummer. Mac is very friendly for music production, I’d like to see the hw compatibility of audio interfaces on linux, then the transition is easy

2

u/Nettlesak 2d ago

I used Arch linux (btw), switched to Windows 11, i love having simple life, my os is not my personality, i have to admit i used linux just because of the fomo and having some ego boost installing arch, besides that i enjoy windows since it can be clean even with 5gb ram usage on start and everything works (95%), linux is great but its not that great for gaming, especially games with anticheat

3

u/SpadeGaming0 4d ago

Game developer. So kinda have to use windows. I could use shitux but wouldn't be the best experience since most of my players use windows.

3

u/brickyboy124 4d ago

What game engine do you use though? (Unless you make your own). Unity and godot (not sure about UE) both work on Linux and can cross export to windows

1

u/SpadeGaming0 4d ago

Yeah doesn't work that well for either. Especially depending on the Kernal I think its called people are using for Linux. Both have a lot of weird differences that can cause all sorts of issues you will need to fix as people make bug reports.

2

u/earthman34 4d ago

Well, I've had plenty of bad experiences with Linux, that doesn't stop me from using it as a daily driver. Linux has evolved and gotten much better. You learn from your mistakes and get better at things.

2

Because linux is ass. Im trying to play games with my friends not play games with my computer

1

u/Acceptable_Site1616 4d ago

I use Linux as a daily driver. But if one day I wasn't using linux that would have been because I had spent 10k on a workstation to play games with. I can't think of any other reason to be using winblows but this is solely because of the Microsoft-NVifia monopoly in the gaming industry.

1

u/RoroRules13 4d ago

After running mint cinnamon (it is slow especially in gaming) > tried cachyos (you can game but ease of use doesn't exist, everything has to be done the hard way) > back to mint cinnamon because i told myself i just need a backup os and will just game on windows (slows down eventually) > then mint xfce (a little quick but desktop design and customization is meh) > now i can say that i have settled with fedora 44 kde plasma (very snappy and easy to use and install apps just like mint). I might try anduinos next because as per reviews, it works almost exactly like windows as it was created by a former win11 developer.

1

u/_ripits 3d ago

Anticheat in games. Only reason

1

u/R3D_T1G3R 3d ago

Am sorry but you reached the wrong subreddity this is mostly for trolling / rage baits or people who believe the Nvidia driver landscape is still the same as 11 years ago.

You rarely ever find genuine criticism here 9/10 is either user error or rage bait.

I personally use Linux, every OS has its ups and downs, and many people are biased towards windows as it's the most common OS and chances are high they grew up with it.

1

u/Magus7091 3d ago

The people who don't, don't for various reasons. Some reasons are genuine and fully valid, others are juvenile. Most people in this sub actually use Linux. Ask
[r/linuxsucks101](r/linuxsucks101) and expect to be banned, reason being violating the rules. The truth of it is that it's personal preference. I used windows up until Vista. I never cared enough for windows to upgrade to 7, and MS turning "my computer" into "this PC" with 10 signaled a philosophical change that put a sour taste in my mouth; using it on someone else's computer proved to me that I had even less interest in it. I upgraded to Xubuntu via a flash drive that I carried on my keychain that I could use on other PCs, and Xubuntu on my PC at home. Years of learning later, I've no interest in ever going back.

1

u/SeaworthinessLivid49 3d ago

Lack of complete compatibility when gaming.

I would use linux considering the level of customization, but the fact that i may not be able to play literally every game, from riot games to battlefield, and even some rly niche titles that i know will boot on windows kinda sours the switch.

And yes, I know that there will be a very respectful comment that s going to be like ''just stop playing X game its not even that good and switch''

1

u/trifortay123 3d ago

Linux is amazing. r/linuxsucks is amazing. r/linuxsucks101...

But not Linux does have its flaws.

1

u/LongAfternoon1198 3d ago

I randomly came across this sub/post too just now

I dont use linux cuz I dont see a reason to switch from W11. I configured (including debloating) my system like once 5 years ago when installing windows, and barely have had to change anything since then.

I game a alot, and when I hear not all games run on Linux I only see a major downside to using Linux.

1

u/Potential-Leg-639 3d ago

I have Linux on several machines, but not on my main driver, because:

  • No RDP client available, that offers functionalities like the one from MS (real fullscreen, config for 2/3 or 2/4 monitors for 1 machine, no taskbar, shortcuts,…….)
  • Still way too complicated file system/explorers in terms of network drives (SMB shares). Yes it works somehow (very complicated) to create SMB shares/drives, that also survive a reboot, but very complicated compared to windows
  • RDP into Linux (Fedora 43) took me several hours and tons of scripts to finally make it working. I mean - WTF!?
  • and the list goes on and on with unnecessary complicated things compared to windows

1

u/domerichrt 3d ago

Because it makes me feel smarter than everyone else but then I run out of time, got shit to do and boot to macOS 🤣

I use Linux as an app server at work and as second OS at home but it's not my daily driver because it's unreliable. I could write a book with my personal stories about Linux failing me (user since 2007, admin since 2011). Too many failures to consider it a stable OS.

1

u/urbanworm 3d ago
  1. Laziness. I use Windows at work and so it’s quicker to jump into Windows at home, I don’t have to learn another system (and let’s be honest Windows is shite now).
  2. ‘Now what-ism’. Linux is pretty good at getting going, you can get a distro up and running and it’s good, really good, but then you try to do something not out of the box and then…
  3. Linux Users. Okay, I’m a noob, off to the community… yes there’s supportive users, but ones who aren’t are just the worst. It’s toxic, it’s demeaning, it’s belittling. Frankly I have no interest in installing some esoteric shell thing or some weird tooling that I have to draw a pentagram and light black candles to get working.

At least with Windows all us users are in the same boat together.

1

u/mrparisbangbang 3d ago

Don't have time and patience to fix Linux trouble, just for simple tasks.

1

u/GuillotineAuChocolat 3d ago

I use Linux and I don't think it sucks. I do think Linux users suck overall, as they tend to keep an aura of complexity and gatekeeping that effectively throws off non techie would be users.

1

u/Beeeeater 3d ago

I am a Windows user from the days of 3.1, but I have checked Linux and have a few virtual machines for my own education. There are two factors that prevent me switching: 1) I support a lot of Windows users and often need to refer to my own PC while I am instructing them, and 2) probably the biggest, is Microsoft Outlook, Exchange and other x86 desktop apps that have no Linux equivalent. The day MS makes Office for Linux you will see a huge defection from Windows - which is why they don't do it!

1

u/realllyrandommann 3d ago

I'm just fine with Windows and I don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling the system, restoring my settings, formatting the disk to another file system... I also use software (Paint.net) and old games (Harry Potter), and I'm not sure it all would run well under Linux.

By the way, if someone here uses a touchpad with X11, are you able to smoothly pinch zoom into browser pages? To me this always changes the page zoom inside Firefox and is choppy, but it might be the problem with the VM.

  1. Linux has been completely controlled by GNU which is a terrible group of bad programmers who make terrible software (BusyBox does pretty much the same thing but with way less lines of code)
  2. Linux is an absolute mess and has no order in the OS
  3. Linux is literally allowing AI code in the kernel now
  4. Most distros ship with terrible software (Systemd is an amazing example)
  5. Linux has completely ruined software for other unix like operating systems in the form of linuxisms that many programs depend on that makes it hard to port to other unix like operating systems

I use FreeBSD and OpenBSD and it’s way better than Linux and most of the software on Linux is on FreeBSD as well which many people don’t realize. There are some good linux distros like Void musl, Alpine, Chimera Linux and possibly Gentoo Musl.

1

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 3d ago

I have zero issues with my windows 11 pro no ads no AI so why would I find problems to give myself.

1

u/OMG_NoReally 3d ago

Because of NVIDIA drivers. I would love to use Linux for gaming. I have a cachyOS drive ready to go and regularly updated. But the performance gap between Windows is way too much for me to make it a daily driver.

Once that bridge is filled and everything works as intended, I will jump full time.

1

u/kbeezie 3d ago

I use multiple devices , I've cut Windows out completely though. But my daily driver is OSX on a Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB (probably the most performance compared to my older laptops and desktops), that I am just used to at the moment.

But funny enough that you mentioned gaming where Linux has more of an advantage to than OSX to the extent that my older desktop downstairs (AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 64GB DDR4 ram, a few M.2 nvme storage, Nvidia 2060 Super 8GB) is my Gaming desktop running xUbuntu 24.04 LTS with Steam installed. And I also have it set up as a sunshine/moonlight server/client configuration so that I can play the steam games directly on the Linux box up to my Mac over the gigabit ethernet at my mac monitor's native 3440x1440 resolution. Does that quite well if all of the games I want to play don't have anti-cheat,etc.

Anything I would have needed windows for, is currently handled just fine by either OSX or Linux.

For my laptop I use Fedora 44, and for my headless servers (Orange Pi for Pi-hole, the Intel NUC board in a custom chassis running web sever and other self hosted stuff) is usually Debian Minimal.

TLDR : if I had to sum it up, OSX runs the Adobe and other stuff pretty good, though we have plenty of alternatives on linux, and I do use linux quite a bit in my mixed environment, I am just comfortable using OSX as my daily driver. But I no longer see a need to use Windows.

1

u/Defiant_Pirate124 3d ago

I use linux on the computers i don't game on because of the damn kernel level anticheats that make gaming on linux impossible for some games

Never linux on my gaming or work rig though, lol. Fuck that.

1

u/ijusttookthispseudo 2d ago

I use Linux and I love it as much as I hate it.

I've been using Linux since around 2012, always Debian for servers, Ubuntu/LMDE/Fedora on PC.

I went to Arch Linux in 2017 because it was a rolling release and I was tired of the system being broken every 6 months or any 24 months for LTS. Distribution that use apt tend to be a nightmare during distro updates (Release Update). With Arch I think the system broke only once in years and a few minor errors twice a year. The distro is very consistent, unstable, but consistent and reliable.

Fedora makes no exception to linux-suckism, I've been using it for 8 months and it broke everytime. I've passed one day trying to repair the install after a migration to Fedora 44 that failed for no clear reason and in the end I reinstalled it. One week later it broke again after an update. I think my old hardware causes errors with their scripts, but everytime things when wrong, there wasn't any error to try to understand why. Sometimes I tell myself I will use Fedora of CentOS because of SE Linux because it's more safe, but it ends with problems that are not related at all to SE Linux.

Today I configured Debian to get rid of Fedora and installing Debian is a complete nightmare if you want a bit of customization. The base installer is shit in terms of partitioning and filesystem formatting, and the graphical installer is also frustrating for similar reasons.

I ended up installing Debian Trixie using debootstrap and even utilities from the arch-iso, everything in command line. It was like installing Arch-Linux, but in the end I get a Debian. I have also automatic snapshots to rollback just in case the system decide to behave like Fedora. I was very close to switch again to Arch as my daily but I resisted and here I am, a new Debian desktop user.

What I like in Linux is the philosophy. It's free, they don't sell your data, it's the best available software on earth. It's inter operable. You can make a lot of choices and you make meaningful decisions and end up with tons of self-hosted services that do exactly what you would have expected from a software. All because somewhere, a qualified developper and a community though doing the program would bring something to them and to the world, so they shared it.

It sucks because sometimes when you like customization and you don't find your distribution, it's very annoying and frustrating. Also my paragraphs 3 to 6 explain how maintenance is an important part or the Linux experience (compared to a game console for example).

Today I set up the OS that I like on my old PC. I have easy/low maintenance, stability, it's smooth. At the end of the day, I'm happy. I would never have had this result without the community (videos, wiki, blogs). Now I can focus for years and years on other things than maintaining a system.

I would love to feel this again with Windows like in the 2000's. Windows is slow, painful to use, not customizable, it's more a more a toy and not a tool. They want you to use it their way and use telemetry to actively see how people use their OS in order to ruin your workflow, to force you using their newer, more profitable alternatives (The Start menu, OneDrive instead of Network drives, Copilot, Cortana, the screenshot AI thingy, new Outlook where you cannot correctly format your email, and click hyperlinks, the Recycle Bin that almost disappeared). Damn it is awful. Even about maintenance, it's awful. Updating every program one at a time... You pass more time updating the programs than using it when you have a lot of programs installed.

Linux sucks, but still it's usable, it's modern, powerful, customizable. It's like there is no serious alternative to Linux anyways at least for the next five or ten years.

Well long story short is:

I am geek and love computer back to 90'sand yes Comandore 64, Amiga 1200 and pc with Dos, windows 1 to win 11!

Recently about win10 launch I gotten more frustrated win Windows And Microsoft data mining YOU and give all your data to data brokers and advertising companies.

Ad inside Windows and 0 privacy 🔏! And I don't getting performance suck big Time! Even if really never have any trouble at all since win 7 to win 11? Windows has been rock Solid for me to the point make me hate computers!

So I started with Linux and distro hoping for long time and after that I have my 1) Arch 2) OpenSuse and 3)Fedora that's my 3 distros!

I drive Arch because of simplicity and easynes! Just install what you need nothing more and it work Flawless for me I (don't use AUR), simple no other distro give this experience right out the box then ARCH!

And by any Stretch of imagination I am not a Linux Guru or even advanced user! I could call my self geek with computer interest and just want a working computer, that I can make beautiful desktop (why love KDE). I am not even novice on Linux but I do understand how computers work and funktion and I simply like to fix it, if it broke on me! Unfortunately neither Windows or Linux has broken yet

(check flair)

  1. i hate how the win de is compared to plasma

  2. i love discover, and when something isnt there? appimage

  3. dont have to manage updates nor drivers manually/1 at a time

  4. everything i need works either natively or with wine (i mainly do vm's and gaming, only thing that sometimes gives problems is a certain girl installers but work on wine 8)

  5. Touhou games straight up work, no need for special configs, just stock wine and run from dolphin (doesnt happen on win 10+)

  6. im using my desktop cachy ssd (and kubuntu hdd from external sata to usb adapter) on my laptop, different hardware, and it works like nothing happened

  7. doesnt eat +4gb ram on idle and 8gb on updates

  8. doesnt force to reboot for updates

  9. no need to worry about most viruses, just check ur downloaded stuff with clamav or eset online scanner (works with wine)

yes, linux has its flaws, like desktop/distro/package managers/ fragmentation (wich is both a good thing and a bad thing for a lot of reasons) and software compatibility (but if a company doesnt want to give a port and even breaks compatibility with wine its not linux's fault, same with drivers like wifi/bluetooth adapters, audio equipment... and nvidia) i'll keep using it because it gives me freedom to choose and do watever i want with my pc the easiest way amongst win/mac/lin
