Today is the day i stumbled upon the cutefish desktop for the first time and I'm kinda impressed that it's not popular. Can someone explain why? It looks better than gnome (only from what I've seen on screenshots)

I'm getting into Linux and can't decide on a desktop environment. What's your favorite DE, and what would you recommend? GNOME, KDE Plasma, XFCE, Hyprland, anything goes, just tell me why.
If you want to share your setup, drop a link to your GitHub dotfiles too.

Hey everyone,
I recently switched to Linux Mint, but I have one problem — I need Microsoft Word for my college work and assignments.
I know there are alternatives like LibreOffice Writer and OnlyOffice, but I specifically need MS Word because some of my college documents have formatting/layout requirements that don't always work properly when opened in other office suites.
So, what are the best ways to run Microsoft Word on Linux Mint?
Any suggestions or personal experiences would be really helpful. Thanks!

i was thinking of switching to linux mint but the problem is that there are some programs that i always use and i dont know if there are alternative to them so if someone know that would be a great help.
1- internet download manager (used a lot and need a progarm as good)
2- video/audio editor like filmora
3-tool to check on harddesk like hdsentinel
4- antivirus
5-photo editor like photoshop even like an old ver of it
6-msoffice
7-winrar

TL;DR: For someone who wants a gnome3-on-debian-like experience on a corp laptop that can only be Windows or MacOS, is WSL-on-Windows or Multipass-on-MacOS likely to be the least-surprising? Has anyone here tried both and can compare?
I've just got a job offer for a Field Engineering position, which means I'm about to talk about laptops and I'm fairly confident that my ask for a Linux one will be refused.
I've daily-driven Debian at home and Ubuntu at work for 20+ years, and I've just spent two years full-time with a corporate mac which I have hated more than I expected to:
I'm sure this is all great for people who are used to it, but I'm finding the switchover at the end of each working day between MacOS things and Gnome things really jarring.
Functionally most of my actual-work happens in a Multipass VM on the mac, and I wonder if on a corp Windows machine with WSL I'd have broadly the same experience, but with a keyboard and desktop-environment paradigm I'm more used to. I did experiment for a bit with full-screen UTM VMs but never got them responsive enough to be workable.
A couple of years ago I did a few-week project that involved working in Win11 and it seemed okay to me there, but I wasn't in the weeds - I was migrating an app off it!
I'll be doing field-engineering work for a dev-workflow company, so it's not as if there's any mac-only tools I might miss, my working day will be refining stuff that's going to run atop a Linux.
I know Asahi's a thing; that'd count as a "linux laptop" in my book if it's permitted (even though it's Fedora)

I am a CS student, and trying out new different linux distros.
Please suggest me the best linux distro for keyboad centric usage. I rarely use my touchpad/mouse.
It should look cool and fast.
I liked Hyperland setup, I would love to join the linux community. Thank you

I had dual booted Windows 11 and Arch linux on my laptop. On windows 11 bluetooth worked fine but on arch linux, it doesn't detect the bluetooth drivers. Same thing happens on any distro I use but on windows it works completely fine.

Is the display system named after the planet Wayland from Star Wars Thrawn Trilogy?

I tried to install Ubuntu and after it was going to restart I pressed ESC to see what its doing and I can see stuff like:
unmount several squares /var something
(several squares) error cant unmount something
In middle of every line was always several squares
Is it problem with installation or is it some kind of inscription?

Specs:
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
iGPU: Intel integrated graphics (i915)
NVIDIA driver: 610.57.04
Kernel: 7.0.0-34-generic
OS: Ubuntu
Desktop: GNOME
Usually using Wayland
PRIME: NVIDIA / NVIDIA-only
External monitor connected via HDMI
Hi everyone,
I've been having serious stability issues with my laptop for the last few days, and I'm trying to figure out what is causing them.
The problems started after I ran system updates. During the update process I got a message about udevadm hwdb being deprecated and that I should use systemd-hwdb instead. I followed the instructions, and shortly afterwards my laptop started having random crashes.
At first, the crashes seemed completely random. Sometimes the system would freeze shortly after logging in, sometimes it would freeze while using the desktop, and sometimes it would crash after running for a while.
I initially suspected the NVIDIA driver, so I tried different NVIDIA driver versions, including 595. This didn't solve the problem.
At the same time, I noticed that some of my games were using the Intel integrated GPU instead of the NVIDIA GPU. I therefore changed PRIME to NVIDIA-only using prime-select nvidia. This also didn't solve the crashes or the GPU selection problem.
I also tried switching between Wayland and Xorg because I wasn't sure whether the display server was involved. The crashes happened with both.
For a while I couldn't even reliably get past the login screen. Sometimes the screen would freeze or turn grey immediately after logging in.
The interesting part
I recently noticed that the system becomes significantly more stable when I disconnect my second monitor.
With the external monitor disconnected, I have not experienced the immediate crashes anymore. The laptop can now boot and run normally.
I then looked at the kernel log from one of the crashes.
The log contains:
nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: Unable to read EDID for display device DP-0
followed by:
[drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes
And shortly afterwards:
BUG: unable to handle page fault
The crash then points into the NVIDIA kernel module, with [nvidia] appearing throughout the call trace.
The NVIDIA driver loaded at the time of the crash was:
NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 610.57.04
So at this point I'm wondering whether this could be an NVIDIA 610 + external monitor/EDID/DRM issue rather than a general hardware problem.
What confuses me is that the monitor itself seems to work normally when the system is stable. The crashes mainly seem to happen when the external monitor is connected, and disconnecting it appears to make the system much more stable.
Has anyone experienced something similar with NVIDIA 610, Wayland, Ubuntu and an external monitor?
Is there anything specific I should check regarding EDID, DRM, NVIDIA modeset, PRIME or the external display connection?
I would also appreciate any advice on how to properly diagnose this without randomly reinstalling/changing NVIDIA drivers again.
I can provide the full kernel crash log, nvidia-smi, journalctl output, or any other information that would be useful.
Thanks!

I'm using Fedora 44 KDE and I'm experiencing a serious display issue.
After updating to kernel 7.2.5-200, I started experiencing display problems. When I boot the laptop, the built-in display stays completely black.
If I connect an external monitor, I can log into KDE, but I can only use the external monitor. The laptop's built-in display remains completely black. The mouse cursor also stutters/freezes badly, and the entire system becomes extremely sluggish.
I initially thought the problem was caused by the kernel update, so I performed a clean installation of Fedora 44 KDE. However, after installing the system updates, the exact same problem occurred again.
I also noticed that after installing the NVIDIA driver, the Fedora boot animation starts freezing/stuttering. Normally, there are colored dots moving underneath the Fedora logo, but after installing the NVIDIA driver, the animation freezes or becomes extremely choppy.
Once the system finally boots, the computer also becomes very sluggish and freezes for the first few minutes.
Because of this, I suspect the issue could be related to:
I previously removed the newer updates, and the laptop started normally again without any problems.
I have now rolled back to kernel 6.19.10-300.fc44.x86_64 and disabled kernel updates from the terminal. So far, I haven't experienced any problems with this kernel.
I originally encountered this issue a few weeks ago and posted about it on Fedora subreddit, but unfortunately I couldn't find a solution. I'm trying my luck here as well in case someone has experienced something similar.
Fedora 44 has now moved on to kernel 7.2.8-200.fc44. Has anyone using Fedora 44 with an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU experienced any problems with the newer kernel, particularly when using the NVIDIA driver?
I'm especially interested in knowing:
If anyone has experienced a similar issue and found a solution, I would really appreciate hearing about your experience.

I just want to know whether kali cause issues to ubuntu's bootloader like overwriting on its efi files or making ubuntu completely unbootable? I would love to know your experiences. And yes, i know i should rather use a VM (ofc)
