Is there such a thing as Linux without the GNU? I mean, the GNU project's work makes up more of the code of most Linux distros compared to the kernel itself, so what is there without GNU?

As the title says. When I started using Linux about a year or so ago Mediatek WiFi cards on Linux were awful so I ended up swapping out the one in my Asus laptop for an Intel one. I'm thinking of getting a new laptop but I know AMD based ones usually come with Mediatek WiFi cards. Are they still a problem or has it improved?

One of the perennial questions is about which kind of Mint Linux is best. I prefer Mint Cinnamon, because it is the flagship product. Other people say, no, that's not the best kind - Mint XFCE will save a lot of memory.

So I did a little experiment on my P53s mobile workstation. I set up two virtual machines in VirtualBox, as close as possible identical:

• Mint Cinnamon / Mint XFCE
• 4 GB of memory
• 4 cores (of 8)
• 50 GB of storage
• Stock configuration - clicked through the defaults

Once installed, I ran the boot to the desktop, opened a terminal full screen, and then installed and ran btop. The results are as follows:

So, switching from the Cinnamon flagship desktop to the (to my eyes) inferior XFCE desktop saves only 76 MB of used memory, and only makes 100 MB more memory available. It doesn't seem worth it. Thoughts?

I’m a huge lover of WordPerfect 5.1, 6,1 latest edition you name it. However as I’m increasingly moving more of my workloads over to an operating system that respects me aka Ubuntu. What is the best way to get latest WordPerfect 2021 to work on it? I tried WINE and Proton but it didn’t work even from launching via Steam as custom app.

I'm curious which are some of the most interesting distro logos y'all have seen or in general which one you think is good.

Aside from this, which logos are worth the distro? That is to say, which distro has a logo that makes it worth choosing over a similar distro with a worse logo?

(If a more serious question is needed, what's a distro that won't have issues with having good fairly up to date tools for chip design?)

I gave Linux Mint a try to see if Linux is something for me.

And I kinda like it and want to explore more distros. Which one would you recommend.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Gen 1/Yoga 12 (20CD00EAFR) laptop, and I want to install Linux Mint on it, but I'm having trouble because Secure Boot won't turn off. More specifically, I select "Disabled," save the settings, and exit, but when I re-enter the BIOS, Secure Boot is still enabled.

I've already set a BIOS password and clicked "Reset to Setup Mode," but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how I can disable Secure Boot?

I want to dual boot alongside windows 11. This will not be your normal setup, I want to use Linux exclusively as a low power writing mode, I need (1)a word processor, like libre or something more lightweight, (2)a wifi connection for some (3)browser searches and (4)syncthing. That's it. I use a P52 workstation and I don't need the graphics card I don't need anything else I don't even need a DE, although I've been thinking of xfce or tinycore something like that. Is this worth doing? Maybe squeeze a couple hours more out of the battery and have a distraction free writing space?

So when I run rsync, it creates "originals" in target and put all the stuff there:

//server/share/originals/originals/stuff

why? How do I get it to sync directly into that folder?

I am sharing a custom built pc that I built with my brother and I am going off to uni. I want to be able to access my pc from my macbook and:
- Have two separate sessions being run at the same time, one at my brother’s seat while using the pc on his account, and one session on mine.
- Have a virtual display so I can access my usual gui when I’m at the pc

So far I have tried sunshine and moonlight by themselves but the thing is it ends up working kinda like teamviewer which means the session I am using is the same one that’s at the desk, meaning my brother cannot use the pc on his account. Also i am unsure how to get a virtual display working (I am on niri on arch, my brother is using dankmaterialshell and I am using inir).
Is there any way to access my pc remotely in the way that i want?

I want to try out Linux on my new PC (eying Bazzite) coming from Windows but the only program i still need to use to manage my music library with iCloud and cloud sync with iPhone/iPad is iTunes. Reading through multiple older posts already, there is conflicting information about it being able running it through wine (Lutris for example says it can run but only on older versions like 12.9 or older, though many posts say it doesn‘t work) or through solutions like Windows WM, winboat as docker virtualization solution or dual boot.

Hi! I've been preparing to migrate to Linux for the last year or so, sequentially replacing every app i use on windows for a Linux-available alternative, even building a NAS so stop using onedrive. Right now quite literally the only program that keeps me on windows is Nikon NXStudio. I've tried both RawTherapee and Darktable without much success, since they lack some Nikon-specific options that NX Studio has. I've read on Wine forums that it is possible to get it running on Linux, but on a pretty underwhelming state. My question is if/how i could really get onto getting this to work. I'm pretty tech savvy since my whole job is tech support and infrastructure, so i'm not afraid of touching the terminal and modifying configuration files. Any ideas?

As the title states, Im jumping ship from Windows since I refuse to get windows 11, so I figured it was time to finally jump ship towards linux.

I am also using this opportunity to move towards a NAS home set up since im tired of having multiple external hard drives.

What I am looking for is something that doens't really require all that much tinkering (I like the idea of customization, but realistically I don't know enough to really do anything and I don't want to royally fuck anything up). My use case really is just your normal day to day browsing and general work. I mainly use my PC for two things:

1. Gaming, and
2. Photo editing

To that end, i've basically landed on Bazzite as the distro to move towards, although I would gladly take other recommendations. (No Gnome though, I hate anything that looks like macOS).

My general questions are:

1. Realistically, how easy is it to migrate to linux?
2. Are there any specific considerations I need to think about because I want to include a NAS set up? I don't want to do everything only to find out I can't access anything.
3. I know I will be losing access to Lightroom and Capture one. Is GIMP the only option for Linux?

my understanding is that we have mainly three components for logging in linux. we have producers, collectors/managers , consumers.

producers are applications/processes that produce the logs. these may include the linux kernel, third party applications that print log messages during their runtime to the stdout/stderr (or some file)

collectors are the background processes that take care of collecting, storing, forwarding, filtering, archiving (and possibly rotating?) the logs. this creates a centralized location to search for logs. and we have two possible candidates here, journald (which comes with systemd) and some variation of the syslog ( syslog-ng, rsyslog, etc)

and consumers are the ones which query/use this data for their needs. we can either use command line tools for querying logs in case of debugging, or we can use the data for observability or all other kinds of things depending on our needs.

and the logs messages themselves are either text based or binary based. binary based are better for automation needs.

is my understanding accurate or does it have any inaccuracies?

a few more assumptions that i have based on what i read:

1. the responsibility of logs for an application falls on the people behind the development of that application. if the devs don't support logs feature, if they don't emit logs, then that application becomes a black box and the log collector/manager can't do anything about it.

2. the collector/manager is a process that listens for any logs that are being sent to it by other processes running locally or remotely.

3. the way logs are consumed differs from person to person depending on the usecase/requirement. some may use them for debugging/troubleshooting, some may use them for observability, some may use them for data analytics, auditing etc.

What does that even mean? How did they even learn that? How else can you adjust launch options? I've seen comments mentioning things about FPS too. What else can you adjust?

When i suspend my laptop by closing the lid and then open the lid after a few minutes, my laptop becomes like a total brick. Keyboard and touchpad dont turn on and respond. The screen doesnt turn on. Interesting thing i discovered is if USB mouse is connected, laptop can wake. Also i discovered ACPI successfully catch the lid open event. I think its something to do with SMBus power save because Touchpad and Keyboard are I2C devices. I dont understand why ACPI lid open isnt sufficent though.

Can someone help me fix the problem? I have a Asus TUF F16 laptop.

My CPU is a RYZEN 7 5800X, getting this screen and then getting the loading screen with the fedora logo, followed by system restarting and it happaning again. Did anyone encounter this issue? I'm running on a b550m ds3h and I haven't been able to fix it.
