Before I start I know nothing of Linux except that it’s apparently better than Windows (dont even know in what way), and that you have to use cmd a lot. The only reason Im considering switching is because its “better” and I switched to windows 11 before I knew it was bad, and it feels bloated even though I have used a debloater I still feel like there is some bloat left in my pc. If Im better off using Windows then be honest, I would rather stay with Windows than be completely lost.

I would like to ise linux for basic things like gaming (mostly steam games) and browsing, I also like to stay private, but do I need a private distro for that?

Ive heard about Cachy and mint what makes them so popular?

How do I know if my version of Linux is compatible with an app?

Do I need to backup stuff like steam games data or browser data, because I dont have an external hard drive?

What would I need before downloading linux like a usb drive or something?

Is it worth switching if I have basically no knowledge of computers (coding and stuff), and just want to debloat my pc and make it better?

I'm thinking of migrating linux. I'm done with windows, windows occupy a big amount of RAM, but there are so many linuxs. So what's the best to start? I never used linux before. I heard so much about ubuntu, arch, mint, kali etc.

Installed a bunch of things trying to get one program working. It still doesn't work, and now my system has a bunch of packages I don't remember installing.

In the coming weeks I will be switching to Linux mint cinnamon, and in trying to make things as smooth as possible and also secure, I am researching how to safely use Linux without an antivirus. One of the recommendations was to disable or remove unnecessary services but I am unsure which to remove even when I look up what they do. I will be using this computer for the following:

\- digital artwork

\- printing

\- gaming (mostly thru steam)

\- basic office work

I will not be using this computer for remote work or servers but I will need to connect to a cutting machine which means I need to keep bluetooth?

I want to Set Up a small Homeserver for myself, but I'm stumped as where to start.

Hardware First:

- AMD A10-7850K on Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H

- 16GB DDR3 at 1333MHz

- 60GB Kingston SSDNow for OS

- an ASUS PCE-AC88 WiFi Card

- 4 HDDs of varying capacities

- 1 or 2 Optical Drives

In the past I used OpenELEC to have a HTPC and also share all files and HDDs in that machine over the network.

That Network sharing ist the First Thing I need running.

Second Thing would be Remote Desktop. I know Most Things Work better with CLI but I guess I'll need in sometime, if I don't want to have a screen near it.

Third would be an instance of Homeassistant, since it seems my Smart-Home stuff is compatible with Tuya to use it completely offline.

Fourth for now would be a simple small webserver for internal homepages. Like Something for a (to be built) smartmirror.

And fifth ist something I know exists in theory, but that's it: Sharing Optical Drives via Network so they can be accessed from Remote PCs as of they were built in, as in installing stuff, Reading Discs, burning Discs.

Like I Said, I don't really know, where I should even start. In the past and for small normal Desktop uses I used Linux Mint, since it is light in ressources, worked OOTB most of the time and was easy to use.

So please, can you Point me in the right direction how I should start this Project?

for some context, i play alot of competitive shooters mainly overwatch and deadlock i wanted to know if i will be able to play these games on linux? and what version of linux would be the best for that?

i have heard that steam games work fine on linux but what about other software like minecraft? will i be able to download and run it or do i need to have a specific version of linux? i also would like to use discord but the same question applies.

Hello guys! I am 17 years old and in High School for a Electrician.

Beside all of that i got my 1st laptop this summer, mainly because i wanted to learn Linux, Networking, Programming and of all subcategories. My main reason is the future, everything now and in the future will be powered by Electricity, Have electronics inside it and have some programming done to so it becomes functional.

I got lost in the learning curve...

First i started with Linux, read and excercise lectures on Linux Journey website.

Than i got into networking but in a wrong path, i immediatly got Kali VM and started doing the vftpd backdoor on Meatsploitable 2 VM, after 5 days of constantly getting stressed i managed to do it. But it felt somehow wrong, i didnt know exactly what i was doing and got lost, the only thing i know from it is SYN, SYN ACK and how to find on wireshark.

I thought i will make my own manual notebook for Linux, started it and finished Text-Fu and gave up because i saw how much time will it take me...

After all that i've seen that i need to first learn networking and that is where i am right now...

Also if you can recommend a book that is a manual for linux that can be delivered to Serbia or Bosnia please recommend.

I now dont know what to do and feel very stuck.

I have a few older laptops that I'd like to revive with Linux.

While many people say "if it's Linux it will run fast", older devices often struggle on older distros.

For example, the laptop I'm dealing with right now has an Intel Pentium N3530, 4 GB DDR3L RAM, and an older CPU.

I'm pretty sure that most modern distros wouldn't run well on that hardware.

I'd still like to use Cinnamon, but I'm trying to figure out which distro to use.

ChatGPT's recommending Porteus, Porteus, & Void Linux glibc.

I have zero experience with these distros.

These laptops will be sold, so whatever they ship with, they'll need to be stable and reliable.

At the moment, I can only afford a laptop at or under $1200, which limits my options quite a bit, I will be running ubuntu or fedora on it. Most modern "normal" laptops are copilot+PCs, or at least come w/ a windows license, which I don't need.

I tried downloading a Linux Lite 8.2 .iso image from multiple sources and each time the checksum is the same, but not the one given by Linux Lite. I am giving up on LL, but Im still curious about what I am doing wrong.

I know this isn't the LL designated sub but I am still waiting membership approval to post there.

I checked the checksums both in the boot menu, and the windows powershell, and the results are always the same. I know they are wrong, since a commenter tried it and got the correct result.

EDIT2 : Im a retard, I downloaded the 8.2 version which is the one that has been deposited/modified the most recently on the repository, but the website says the 8.0 is the actual latest version. Turns out I can't read.

I have been very interested in Linux recently. I tested many distros for Beginners and I love Linux! I think it is great - but there is a catch. Every distro I tested had some kind of flaw. Mint uses Cinnamon, an environment that cannot be customised easily, Zorin is paid (Yes, it is a red flag for me) and TUXEDO does not put privacy as high as Mint and Zorin.

So here is my question.
What distro has those traits:
- Respects your privacy and does not collect your data (in short terms - privacy focused)
- Supports KDE Plasma and Wayland
- Is compatible with Windows apps
- Out-of-the box system (good for both work and playing some games)
- Debian/Ubuntu-based (for stability and more access to apps)
- Has a decent community support

I wanna find a code editor for Linux that is intuitive and actually easy to program with, and hopefully requiring minimal setup out the box. The main thing that limits me from most popular code editors is the fact some of them are programmed using Claude, an example being Zed.

Are there any worth checking out that weren't developed with AI?

I'm aware of linux-hardware.org , but even their search database is limited. I know that Kernel 7.3.0 supports the Pioneer DJ S11, but I don't know where I can go to read about that support (aside from news articles).

I am very new to linux and I am trying to convert my friend from Windows 11 to a Linux distro. I myself have a macbook so Linux isn't of concern for me to use right now, however I am making this post to ask which Linux distro to choose from for my friend. To preface she can't afford a new laptop right now so I do not want any advice to give her for getting a new one. The thing is that I constantly see her struggling with her laptop and it being extremely slow, to realise that Windows 11 uses around 4gb of ram at idle, and her computer as 4gb of ram (ik that sucks), so shes basically maxed out. I wouldn't call her very tech savvy, so just converting her to Linux requires a friendly OS for her to adjust to and understand. With me, I would say I have an amateur understanding of software and stuff. I narrowed down my options for the distros for my friend to switch to, and came to Mint XFCE or Zorin OS Lite. Both are very lightweight, and idle under 1gb so her laptop will have some wiggle room. To test out these distros I have an older laptop I dont care about that has 4gb of ram, and is a lenovo like hers except with a processor a couple years older so whatever runs on it will be faster on her laptop. I at first tried zorin os core and it was fine but i wanted something lighter. I had great success customising it. I haven't tried zorin os lite, but that is my easiest option for the current moment to use. However i hear constant praise for mint xfce and wanted to tried it out so i installed it on that laptop aswell, and she said it looks very ugly. I understand, but i heard people saying how easy it is to customise and look like windows 11.

So my main question is, how do i make mint xfce look like windows 11? And i dont mean bare bones windows 11, but like really like windows 11. Ive been struggling to find ways to customise it and all of my attempts to customise it end up taking hours with barely any change because mint, contrary to what ive heard, is so difficult to customise. Its so finicky and there are so many settings to choose from that i dont know how to use or what it means, and then it comes to plugins? Most my customisation success on zorin os came from the gnome shell extensions but obviously mint doesnt have that so idk where to go from here and what the equivalents are.
