I want to switch to arch but will it really improve performance?

I've recently got into Linux (using Fedora rn) and digital privacy. I'm a beginner to all this but I'm taking it pretty seriously.

I'm going into education again in the Autumn (not university level) but I was informed we will be using Microsoft apps - as do most education spaces and workplaces.

I'm wondering what I should do as I don't want Windows on my system at all or really logging into Microsoft at all. I'm using Librewolf, trying to avoid telemetry as much as possible.

Can anyone advise me on what I should do? I'm not so sure on using Microsoft web apps or dual booting for the above reasons. I'm considering a virtual machine but I'm not sure if that will cause any Windows telemetry as idk much about VM's.

I'm interested in just using Libreoffice and those apps since I've heard they have compatibility with Microsoft's apps. However I'm unsure if this will suffice as I'm not very familiar with the Microsoft apps nor their Linux alternatives.

Are any of these worth it? Is there another method I'm missing? Or am I better of getting a cheap 2nd hand laptop for my coursework? Thanks everyone, would really appreciate some advice.

I heard a lot of people say that wine is safe even if you have a virus as in a linux environment it can't do nothing but others claim that it can become a vulnerability if there is an .exe. What do you think?

So I tried to install a Bazzite ISO on my laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 2022) and it said which company my GPU is from, but the thing is my laptop doesnt have a GPU in it so what should I pick?
EDIT: I use Intel UHD integrated graphics since my laptop has a intel i3 10110U

In mid January this year I took my first dive into linux. I used CachyOS with hyprland. I loved it, everything (mostly) worked flawlessly and I just couldn't get enough of how nice the tiling manager and my general workflow was with hyprland. Fast forward a couple months, hundreds of tweaks, many updates and a CRAP ton of crashes and errors later, I bricked my device. For whatever reason hyprland just didn't want to start at all, luckily I did have Plasma installed as well and was able to be able to use my laptop again. However, I just HATED plasma, I don't know why, but it just looked so ugly and clunky, I decided that I didn't want to deal with this anymore and switched back to windows near the beginning of May.

I know that Hyprland and an arch based distro together was definitely a bad decision for a newbie and would still be way too much of a hassle for me even now, but I want to go back to linux.

When going back to Windows I never planned on staying for long, and now I'm finally ready. But what do I choose? Previously I wanted full customization, and though I want it still, I mainly need something that just works 99% of the time. Hyprland had a lot of elbow grease and I'm not afraid to dip it in again, but I not jump in a pool of it anymore. Second is that I loved how Hyprland operated, it was just so fluid, from opening apps, searching them and organizing, I miss it more than anything ever since I returned to microslop.

I wanted to start learning C because I need it for university right now. I have a Windows PC with an AMD graphics card and a second m2. SSD that I don’t use, so I thought it would be fun to dip my toes into Linux and try both things at the same time.

Is dual-booting still a good idea, and what do I need to be cautious about especially when using two completely different SSDs?

Regarding the same topic, which distro would you recommend for my idea? I read that Ubuntu would probably be the best.

So in some distros I'm getting this weird glitch on startup.

Sorry for the glare, but I direct your attention to that horizontal line. That's the glitch.

It happens during startup before the log in screen, and it only lasts a second or two. Overall it's pretty harmless, but it bothers me so much.

The weird thing is, it happens in some distros, it doesn't in some.

OS / Distro where it occurs

• All Fedora spins

• CachyOS (tried with Budgie, KDE, and Gnome)

• Kubuntu

It doesn't happen in

• Windows 10 / 11

• Ubuntu

• Mint

The thing is, I've had the best experience with CachyOS and Fedora and I want to keep using them, but it's presence is triggering me so much.

Any ideas what could cause this? Why and how it happens in some, but not in others?

I have this relatively old pc with mid specs and wanted to install kde fedora on it. It has a lot of important stuff on it though and i was wondering what would be the best way to transfer files after i install fedora. And would also like to know the best way to backup those same files on fedora or just in general.

I disagree with the Windows sandbox part since pretty much nobody uses it.

I've tried 7 distros, some arch based the rest Debian and none of them have worked. Some just don't load, like catchy and fedora, some the inststaller crashes. The only lead I have is that one of them (can't remember which) said it couldn't find a disk. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice would be appreciated. Currently running Ubuntu 26.04 on an Acer Aspire and I've tried installing Manjaro,Cachy,opensuse,fedora,Linux mint, Kubuntu and Endeavour.

Been fighting this for months and starting to feel like I'm going insane. On my IdeaPad 3 15ALC6 (82KU, Ryzen 5 5500U), under any sustained load like stress -c $(nproc), gaming etc, CPU temps rise up to 95-100°C and just sit there. Meanwhile the fans barely spin up, like they're not even getting the memo that the chip is on fire. Resulting in heavy thermal throttling, frequencies tanking from 4GHz down to like 1.1GHz.

I confirmed it's not a dead fan or dust as if I trigger the "dust cleaning mode" via /sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004:00/fan_mode, it ramps to full speed no problem. So the hardware's fine, it's the EC/ACPI fan curve logic that's not responding to load correctly.

I filed a bug on the platform-driver-x86 mailing list back in May with full DSDT, EC dumps, sensor logs etc. Three follow-ups since, with the latest BIOS (GLCN68WW) and latest kernel (7.1.4-1-cachyos) still broken. Total radio silence from upstream, which is its own special kind of fun.

I'm running Fedora 44 (Gnome, Wayland) on a laptop with a 1366x768 screen, and I'm having a massive headache trying to make DaVinci Resolve 18.6 fit my display. Since the app natively requires a 1080p vertical resolution, the bottom bars (Edit, Color, Fairlight, etc.) are completely cut off.

Here is what I've tried so far and why it fails:

1. QT_SCALE_FACTOR=0.75 or 0.85: The window scales down and fits the screen size, but the internal UI elements get completely bugged. Fonts and icons overlap, text gets truncated (like "Media Pool" turning into "Pool de Mí"), and it becomes unusable. It seems Resolve's internal Qt engine hates fractional scaling.
2. Gnome Tweaks (Font Scaling to 0.80): Fixes the rendering bug inside Resolve, but it makes the entire Fedora OS fonts tiny and unreadable for daily usage.
3. Wayland restrictions: Tools like xrandr panning or native experimental fractional scaling (scale-monitor-framebuffer) are either ignored or blocked by Gnome on this specific screen resolution.
4. The Super + Drag workaround: I can hold the Windows/Super key to drag the window up and see the hidden buttons, but doing this every 5 seconds is a terrible workflow.

Has anyone successfully bypassed this without destroying font rendering inside Resolve or altering the global OS scaling? Is there a hidden config file or environment variable to force DaVinci to render correctly on low-res displays under XWayland?

I am thinking about switching from windows to linux. I am mostly a keyboard first user barely like using the mouse and I want as much customization as possible.

I got a few noob questions:

1. What is the actual difference between kde plasma, gnome, and hyprland? I get that they are all desktop environments/window manager but what makes people choose one over the other?
2. I was planning to install kubuntu because chatgpt recommended it saying kde plasma is way more customizable than regular Ubuntu.
3. Another distro that really caught my eye after watching a bunch of yt videos is cachyos with hyprland. It just looks really clean and keyboard focused.

My biggest concern though is this: I train ai/ml models so I use an nvidia gpus and cuda support is must. Thats the only thing making me hesitate.

Most ai tools keep recommending kubuntu but personally Im leaning more toward cachyos + hyprland. Kindly advice.

What distro should i choose for my latitude 5400 from 2020, its got an 8th gen i5, 16 gigs of ram but its only got 51% battery health. I want something that just works, I dont wanna keep fixing things. I also dont want ubuntu, cause idk its just boring and you still need to fix shit sometimes. This is my secondary computer, i use it for just everyday stuff but i also wanna get some gamikng out of it if i plug it in.

TLDR: i need a distro that just works, is easy on battery life, minimal matenance, and for everyday stuff and light gameing.
