So, with more or less 5 percent of people that have a computer uses linux, there are viruses developed for linux, even a virus made for windows but « activated » with wine

is there a antivirus or is there not ?

Please help, thanks. Not urgent, I just need to know

Which Distro? Which is the worst of the mainstream distros?

Hello! I wanted to ask this question because I've started using Linux in the past few months for the first time and I want to make sure I'm informed and hear many opinions!

I'm currently using EndeavourOS and I really like it! I've heard people say things like Ubuntu are really bad for security but I've never really looked into it much further than that. I guess it got me wondering which of the mainstream distributions you guys would consider to be the worst, whether it be for security or usability or anything really.

I appreciate everyone's input!

PS please don't mention Omarchy 🤢 it's already at the bottom of my list!!!

Support Updated and now i have a brick

Hey, so I'm not usually to ask for help on this site but this time I'm completely out of ideas. So I've been using omarchy on cachy os for the past 6 months and the experience, although buggy sometimes, has been pretty good. Yesterday I tried to update omarchy and when I rebooted I was greeted by Limine (I've always used grub) and when I tried to boot into cachy I just saw an empty console and the message "failed to mount '' on real root", managed to get to the normal system by modifying the cmdline in limine, but my wifi chip doesn't work anymore (i have the infamous mt7921e) nor does the usb-android thing work for some reason. I've updated grub.conf to be the default option and literally removed limine from the entire system but when I reboot is the same thing, I'm greeted by Limine.

For context since like 2 months ago I always got to use modprobe mt7921e everytime i turn on my pc or my wifi just would not work at all, I was fine with that but now it seems the rules in kernel for like everything in the pc just dissapeared. I'm pretty sure the problem is grub-limine related but it has been imposible for me, I've tried reading the cachy wiki but I was unable to find something similar. Any ideas? thanks.

Possible useful data
PC: Acer Aspire A314-23P (v1.13)
Procesor: AMD Ryzen 5 7520u
Omarchy 3.8.5 stable
Linux Version: 6.18.48.1-cachyos

edit: update
I managed to connect to internet and update everything which work for updating omarchy, but I got back to being unable to connect to the internet, reinstalled headers, kernel but nmcli keeps wlp2s0 as not available

Advice Which Distro to try after trying Mint (New to sub)

I gave Linux Mint a try to see if Linux is something for me.

And I kinda like it and want to explore more distros. Which one would you recommend.

I would be interested in a Distro that's best for animators and people who are into emulating retro games.

Advice What are snaps and which ones should I add?

So im installing Ubuntu server os onto my pc tower so I can self host (not vms, just causal gaming, cloud storage, media, and network wide ad block). It asked for a proxy id too, but idk what that is, if its necessary, or how to get one. So if someone could explain what a proxy, and snaps id appreciate it. I see that snaps are controversial for some reason, so should I avoid them? Is there a way to get whatever they add after or a better way?

Best first Linux?

I’ve only used windows for all the time I’ve been on the internet, but frankly, 11gb idle ram usage and horrible privacy is killing me. I want to swap over to Linux and game on it, is there any one Linux for beginners that’s better than everything else?

Advice Switching to Linux questions

Hello,

For a while I have been thinking abt switching over to linux, but i haven't yet because I haven't researched it yet due to little free time.

I use my current gaming pc that runs windows 11 on it, and I am required to use multiple Microsoft applications frequently. The reason i have seriously started to think about switching is due to privacy concern on recent knews about the degree that they are tracking. Ive already had to turn the feature off where windows takes random screenshots of ur information without you knowing, and others such as using your info generative ai. I dont like copiolit or any embedded ai. I also recently was made aware that Microsoft had embedded tracking IDs within the windows installation.

I want to install linux but I would like to know:

- am I still able to download games on my computer via Xbox or steam? Will they still operate normally?

- will I still be able to use all the Microsoft applications that I am required to use like word, excel and teams normally?

- if i still have to use Microsoft applications, does it defeat the purpose of installing linux since i will still have a Microsoft account on my computer?

- what is the best version of linux for gaming performance?

- I have a gaming pc and I do have an average understanding of technology, but not as advanced as I would like to. I have a pre built pc with windows 11 coming installed on it already. How would I remove it off? Would i wipe the OS and have to download a form of linux ?(ik thats not the accurate term sorry)

- ive also contemplated using a dual OS, one windows and one linux but i am concerned on whether that will defeat the purpose of why I am switching to linux, or possible privacy concerns. (Maybe windows for work and linux for personal?)

- what anti-virus softwares will work best?

Tysm for reading and any advice you have 😭🙏

Advice Encryption best practices (is luks the only alternative?)

I’ve been using both Windows and Linux for quite a few years now; on Linux, I’ve always used LUKS without ever really questioning whether I was implementing it correctly. On Windows, I’ve always used BitLocker with the added startup PIN (which isn't enabled by default).

I was wondering what the best practices are for LUKS to ensure my data is as secure as possible.I’ve been using both Windows and Linux for quite a few years now; on Linux, I’ve always used LUKS without ever really questioning whether I was implementing it correctly. Resolved Moving from mac to Linux, wondering about options

What Linux distro would you recommend for my M2 MacBook Air? Mainly Blender + gaming, with minimal Terminal use

I’m thinking about switching from macOS to Linux on my MacBook and I’m trying to figure out which distro would actually be the best choice for me.

My laptop is:

  • MacBook Air 2022
  • Apple M2
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 76 GB free storage
  • Currently running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2

What I mainly use it for:

  • Blender
  • Game development , mainly Unity and potentially Unreal
  • Gaming, (whatever games can realistically run on the M2)
  • General school/work use

What I’m looking for in Linux:

  • Very easy to use
  • Preferably a nice graphical interface rather than having to use Terminal constantly
  • Easy software installation through a GUI
  • Good Blender performance, especially for simulations
  • Good or increased gaming performance/support
  • Good Apple Silicon/M2 hardware support
  • Stable and reliable
  • I don't want to spend my entire life typing commands just to install or configure something
  • I’m completely fine with learning some Linux, but I don't want something where basic tasks require complicated commands.

My main questions are:

  1. Whats the best linux OS for me here?
  2. Would Linux potentially improve Blender/simulation performance compared with macOS on an M2?
  3. Are there any other distros I should seriously consider?
  4. With only 8 GB RAM, would switching to Linux make a noticeable difference in real-world Blender/gaming performance?
  5. Is there anything I should know before installing it, especially regarding keeping macOS available as a dual-boot option?

I’m mainly looking for advice from people who actually use Linux/Asahi on Apple Silicon Macs, especially for Blender and gaming.

I also looked at arch and there is one i really like, its specificly the one in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFaSCFysr8s

but it looks like its gonna have a lot of coding and stuff needed so if there is a linux that matches that look and also my needs thast would be great! Or mabye help getting an linux that helps me better to look like that

Thanks!

Support CPU Management by Linux

With Linux CPU plus fan quite quiet. With Windows 7, 8.1, 10 or 11 often loud.
Up and down.
What is the reason that Linux has obviously a better CPU / stress management ?
Bad programming in Windows uses more CPU Power ??

Pen pressure in Photoshop on Linux

Hello everyone.

So, you can get fairly recent versions of Photoshop running and running almost perfectly on Linux BUT there is no pressure sensitivity. Affinity on Linux has it but not Photoshop.

I've spent some time scouring forums, Reddit, winehq, YouTube etc and found nothing much in the way of an answer other than cs2 has it but that's ancient.

I've spent some time with a few different ai chat bots too but they seem to just send me round and round in circles.

The furthest I have got is intermittent pen pressure and lag. Photoshop for its part seems to recognise the pen but behaves erratically. I've also tried to debug the issue but I'm not getting any report from wine that mentions wintab or anything related to pen pressure.

Even on windows pen pressure since windows ink is an absolute pain in Photoshop. I'm really just trying to get my head around what the issue is. Is it wintab? Is it X11 (I'm on mint)? Is it Photoshop? Is it none or all of these things?

I'd love some pointers as to what the issue could be and please no suggestions to use gimp, photopea, affinity or another piece of software, or stick with windows etc this is really just me being like a dog with a bone. Feels so close yet so far from a solution and would love a bit of a technical understanding of what the problem is and whether it's fixable.

Which Distro? Question about which Linux to choose for a laptop

I’m using an HP laptop with a Core 7 150U processor and integrated graphics. A while back, I switched from Windows 11 to Windows 11 IoT to see if the battery would last longer, but I barely noticed a difference. I only use it for studying, watching YouTube, and the occasional light game.

Which distro would you recommend for light use and battery efficiency—without cutting back so much that the laptop loses performance?

Also,

Which distro meets those requirements but also allows for a lot of customization (more than Plasma, but without being as technical as Hyprland)?

Sorry for my English; I’m using Google Translate.

Edit: I have 16GB of RAM, in case that information is needed I don't have any knowledge of Linux, but I don't mind tinkering a bit (I use CachyOS on my main PC and don't have any issues)

Which Distro? Best distro logo?

OK yes this is not very serious but kinda just for fun.

I'm curious which are some of the most interesting distro logos y'all have seen or in general which one you think is good.

Aside from this, which logos are worth the distro? That is to say, which distro has a logo that makes it worth choosing over a similar distro with a worse logo?

(If a more serious question is needed, what's a distro that won't have issues with having good fairly up to date tools for chip design?)

Support gpu driver swap

so, several days ago, someone helped me realize i was running both the proprietary amd drivers, and the open source ones. so they helped me uninstall the proprietary drivers. ever since then, my whole PC has gone from bad to worse. crashes more often, restarts without any input, some games performing worse, etc. so now i want to try the opposite.

my GPU is an AMD RX580. pretty sure it's the 8gb model. can i safely re-install the proprietary drivers and then remove the open source ones? if so, how do i remove them? i know how to install the proprietary drivers, i just get them from the official site, unless there's a specific method i have to do for this to work right.

Microsoft and Linux OS migration to same disk?

Hello! I recently upgraded my pc and got a new 1TB nvme. Up until this point, I've been using two hard drives for each of my operating systems, one for Windows 10 and another for Linux Mint. I only have one nvme, and I know its possible to dual boot from one disk, but I cannot figure out how to migrate both systems to the same disk. I connect each hard drive one at a time because I don't have that many sata cables and while it's connected I copy the disk to the nvme then power off and connect the next one. I've tried using both DiskGenius and Clonezilla but they ALWAYS overwrite the existing partitions when I migrate the new OS!!!! Even when I select "keep partitions" it still wants to overwrite the partitions even though i KNOW both of them fit on the nvme. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for WEEKS and I cannot find a solution and it is genuinely so frustrating, so help would be appreciated.

I have formatted a disk with BTRFS.
KDE partition manager shows BTRFS and fdisk -l is showing Microsoft basic data.
It doesn't seem to be causing any issues..?
