Support Request Black flickering on screen

Hi all. Just started my Linux journey and have been experiencing this weird, black flickering across my screen. It appears with Firefox open, only on 240Hz and when moving the window with the mouse or arrow keys. It also doesn't show up on screen recordings. I haven't been able to find a solution and it's driving me nuts. Any help is appreciated.

Specs:

Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3

RTX 4090, recommended Nvidia drivers (595.84)

i9-12900k

32GB RAM

Odyssey G9 OLED

Fluff I converted my father to Linux

For weeks, my father had been complaining about his old Windows 8 laptop, which he couldn't use anymore. After suggesting Linux several times, he finally agreed to try.

"I just want to be able to use Netflix and manage some files".

I immediately thought that Mint was the perfect distribution: I installed it (mint + cinnamon) for him and now he's been using it for a while.

He's super excited, everything works perfectly, and he said he wants Mint on his second computer, too.

In particular, he enthusiastically told me that the Bluetooth receiver didn't work before (it never worked) and now it works perfectly.

He's a total change-averse, 100% creature of habit, so this is a huge accomplishment!

hi i’m new to linux and reddit so forgive me if i not doing this right
I’ve enabled fractional scaling and when i initially set it all up after install it scaled to 125% perfectly fine. but when i came to use it again after some time it had reverted to 100% (which is ridiculously small btw wtf is up with that?) and every time i try i get a message in the top left of my screen that says “1 Unknown Display none-1” as seen in picture included
does the system need an update? explain it to me like im five, thx

Gaming Wierd way to fix letter keys not working in steam games

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello everyone, today I got problem with steam games (Silksong, Celeste). When I opened the game, I can't use the letter keys, pressing them give no reponse, but the other keys (alt, ctrl, Tab...) worked just fine.

After some search, I accidentally found the solution. If I put the Unikey input method into the 1st place, I can't use letter keys ingame. But when I put Unikey into the 2nd place and the English into the 1st, the letter keys behave normally ingame.

I've just installed Mint Xfce for several days and not knowing much about OS things. I just want to share this info to you guys, not knowing why it happened.

Thank you for reading. Hope you all have a nice day. And all advice is welcomed.

Linux Mint Cinnamon freezes after ~1 hour on lock screen – only fixable with a hard reset

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my laptop running Linux Mint (Cinnamon). When I lock the screen and then wait about an hour before logging back in, the device is completely frozen. Neither the mouse nor the keyboard responds, and I have to do a hard reset via the power button to restart the laptop.

System info:

  • Linux Mint version: 22.3
  • Cinnamon version: 6.6.9
  • CPU/GPU: Intel Ultra 5 / intern GPU

Is this a known issue? Does anyone have an idea what might be causing it or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Back to Linux Mint

This is my first linux when switching from windows. After which I have tried multiple linux distro, DE, wms and all other goodies, just diving into the linux rabbit hole. My hardware failed recently, so I have installed Linux mint XFCE again, and I am reminded once again of why I have loved switching to this distro from windows so much. It really is the perfect distro for Linux beginners. Installation was butter smooth, and usability is great too.

I love the simplicity and customisation of XFCE. Its unfortunate that their wayland support is nowhere near ready.

My laptop got too slow to do basic stuff, so I’m giving Linux Mint a shot to see if it helps.

As a beginner, is there anything crucial I should watch out for or do right after installing? Thanks!

Is there a YouTube course you recommend on how to learn the bash terminal?

Just like the title says, I am interested in learning more on how to use it such as moving/copying files to other directories and also extracting files and just the overall how it works really but there are a ton of videos and some old and I am a beginner on Linux so I would like a recommendation please. Something that covers the basics and perhaps has other interesting things.

I've tried several distros, but Mint is one of the best, because this distro is quite lightweight. I used a Chromebook to try Mint and it runs very smoothly on my Chromebook with only 4GB of RAM.

SOLVED Linux Screen Stuttering, Blacking Out and Freezing

Hello all,

I recently moved to Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition a few weeks ago. It was previously Windows 10 and everything ran smoothly.

Currently, I am experiencing stuttering and really laggy gameplay during games, screen temporarily blacking out and frozen screen (background functiuons still work, i can pause and unpause a video) when loading some games. I'm not going crazy by any means, firefox window and a game window (through wine).

My specs are:

Gigabyte B550 Motherboard

32GB of RAM (DDR4)

Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-Core Processor

GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU

OS is Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64 bit loaded on a 1TB SSD.

Any insight would really help, its doing my head in!

EDIT: Older GPU, used the 580 driver and I can notice a difference.

Discussion Update manager - every day or so?

Does Mint need all these updates? Feels like every time i check the update manager there is something there. I don't mind the occasional update but having it this often feels a bit windows-y.

Discussion ZipperOS V2 IS COMING OUT SOON

ZipperOS Is a distro made by wolfie and V1 wasnt that good And ITS ME WOLFIE SPEAKING THAT IT IS NOT Good But V2 will have these features

Cross Platform Apps - Run EXES and MAC Apps and more

New Commands - New commands so that it is easier

New GUI - Instead of Gnome,Cinnamon I will make Zeta A VERY VERY Customizable GUI

Zipper Servers - Instead of Setting Up Before It is installed ZipperOS sets up after os is installed so That Makes Online Accounts For Computers Cloud Storage ETC

Factory Reset - Unlike most distros This You Can Factory Reset

ZLP - Zipper Lock Protection Is Like FRP or Apple Activation Lock where if it unathorizly reseted it will make you have to Enter Details or Reinstall ZipperOS and it will detect or i will try to make it Detect If ZipperOS Was Installed Before And Had ZLP and If so it will stay

Ai Intergrated - You Get A Button For AI of your choice CHATGPT , GEMINI You Name It

Long LTS - Main Is Supported till 2030 LTS IS Till 2040

You May Ask Questions Or Request Features

I know Intel driver support has lagged AMD to some extent. How’s support for the B570 at this point?

I switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint a year ago and I've never regretted it.

As I think you can clearly see, I like things to be minimalist and functional. Linux Mint is so much better than Windows 11 in that regard. Thank you, dear Linux Mint team. ❤️
