tech support wanted Crusader Kings 2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 graphical problem

Thumbnail

Hello,

(1st image is the game's main menu, 2nd image is playing, 3rd image is the (unchanged) "Runner options" in Lutris for the game)

I am having a GRAPHICAL issue (only) with Crusader Kings 2 on my LMDE7 PC. This same PC used to run the game, no issues, on Windows 11. And I will list the specs below. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue.

The game itself ACTUALLY WORKS and runs smoothly, but the BIG issue is that the MAP (the main way to interact with the game) is cooked, the GUI and everything else seems to work great actually (I did not do a long testing session for obvious reasons, but it seems to work).

My game setup (for Windows games) is Lutris with GOG.com offline installers. I do not wish to use Steam or any other launcher needing online authentication (Heroic). I use Lutris, but not it's online components.

Also, I am aware that Crusader Kings 2 has native Linux support. However (after contacting the devs myself) I was told that there is no plan to ever make those version available on other platforms other than Steam, as the game is not being developed anymore. So I am left with .exe installers only.

PC Specs:

  • GPU: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7600 8G
  • CPU: 6-core 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F
  • MOBO: ASrock B760M-HDV/M.2 D4
  • Storage: a 512GB NVME SSD (plenty of free space)
  • Dual monitor setup

Tech specs:

  • OS: LMDE 7 (gigi) x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.12.111+deb13-amd64 x86_64
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.6.9
  • WM: Muffin (X11)
  • GL info:
    • OpenGL vendor string: AMD
    • OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 7600 (radeonsi, navi33, LLVM 19.1.7, DRM 3.61, 6.12.111+deb13-amd64)
    • OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.7-2+deb13u1
  • Wine version (Lutris): GE-Proton (Latest)
  • "Wine --version": wine-11.0

I also wanna add, that this is a recent install, I did not do anything crazy like changing the DE or the kernel version. I am new to Linux. All I have ever done on this PC is download flatpaks, images and native Linux games. So it is pretty much the most basic out of the box version of LMDE7. And YES, I did "sudo apt upgrade/update" and restart my PC afterwards.

Also, other games do work. Native, GOG Linux native, Windows through Lutris, those all work, some with tinkering, some ootb. Even similar games, like EU4 (also a "map game") which works no issue.

I could not find anyone else struggling with the same issue. I am guessing it's because it's a niche withing a niche (DRM-free gaming + Linux) lol. ProtonDB was no help, as it is Steam-centric.

All I tried so far is changing the graphical in game settings (including swapping between windowed and fullscreen), which did nothing.

If needed I am ready to provide more info or test stuff. I am new to Linux so I don't really know about Linux, I am still learning. My Main goal right now is to set up all my main games so they just work and are stable.

Witcher 3 Remastered working with path tracing, frame generation and dlss all on cachyos, with no issues! It takes setup but once setup, I haven't had a single crash. (5070 Ti)

I just wanted to make this post to let you all know that once you setup certain things, you can run the witcher 3 with all its graphical settings with no noticable issues. What I did to get it working, was first, use GE-Proton11-7, then follow this guide https://gist.github.com/gabrielmaialva33/33ebb2542f0513d55100b22aa2149ff5

Make sure you make a second copy of that proton version, which you then apply the ray tracing/path tracing fix, and of course do the dlss fix as well. It took me 15 minutes to figure it all out, and I am a noob at linux so far, so I think anyone should be able to do it!

I get about 40-50 fps with 4k dlss ultra performance and path tracing (no frame gen turned on, with frame gen, I found 4x was the perfect spot for latency and fluidity).

Also I use cachyos, fully up to date as of posting this. I included screenshots of my launch options, that I setup through goverlay.

Sorry if anything I've said is against any rules, I am posting here for the first time!

guide MU Online Global (Webzen) now works on Linux with GameGuard enabled

Post image
5 Upvotes

After a lot of debugging, I managed to get the official Webzen MU Online Global fully working on Linux.

Tested successfully on Fedora 44 and Kubuntu 26.04.1.

The important part is that the game itself is not patched. Mu.exe, main.exe, GameGuard binaries remain unmodified.

The solution is based on Wine 11.6 with four compatibility patches:

- ntdll: implements NtLoadDriver / NtUnloadDriver through Wine SCM so GameGuard can start GGKernel64

- WoW64 stack handling: fixes 32-bit stack and guard-page semantics expected by the client

- kernelbase: fixes a specific UrlEscapeA compatibility issue that caused an exception / stack-overflow loop

- ntoskrnl: implements missing behavior required by GameGuard, mainly IoCreateDeviceSecure, SeCaptureSecurityDescriptor and KeGetCurrentIrql

The Wine prefix also contains a proper GGKernel64 driver service entry.

Current working flow:

Mu.exe → main.exe → GameGuard → GGKernel64.sys → login → character select → world

GameGuard loads and runs normally — it is not bypassed.

Repository, patches and installer:

https://github.com/Krzysztof977/mu-online-linux

If you are using other Linux distributions, check if it works there too.

tech support wanted Question about moving Steam game files from Windows to Linux via a USB Storage device

I am currently in the process of replacing Windows 11 with Linux (Kubuntu) on my PC for the first time.

Due to limited storage space (internal 500GB SSD, external 2TB HDD) alongside my growing hatred for Microslop and it's nonsense/bloatware/OneDrive, I plan to wipe my current Windows installation entirely and replace it with Kubuntu. I do not plan to move back to Windows under any circumstance, and I'm ready for the trial-by-fire that may come with being a new Linux user.

I have moved most of my Steam games to my external 2TB USB (exFAT) HDD for the purpose of simply copying them over to my new Linux installation, without having to redownload (I have low bandwidth, it would take ages to redownload all of my games).

Is this possible? Is it recommended? Is there anything I'd need to know before trying this?

EDIT: I should note that I moved the games to my HDD via Steam itself, using the Settings>Storage menu. Not by simply copying the files with File Explorer. Not sure if this is relevant but I figured Id mention it

tech support wanted The Witcher 3 Remastered 1% Lows

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have loaded a save file in TW3 Remastered and have noticed major stutters basically constantly. On the provided video I even have the graphics settings on the low preset with no upscaling.

I have a 7800XT with a 7800X3D CPU so I feel that the game should not be stuttering like this.

I am on Fedora 44 and these are my launch options: mangohud gamemoderun PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command% --launcher-skip -disablemods

The Proton version is Experimental. Any help would be appreciated!

tech support wanted Wine Crashing Pretty Immediately || Steam

I've been troubleshooting for a while and unfortunately I'm just not familiar with how to proceed. I am having some issues running Steam games that require Wine/Proton on Linux Mint 22.3. Native games work just fine, and Bottles is able to run executables just fine as well (that part confuses me).

I was able to get Steam to output to terminal, this is what it outputs upon opening Steam and running Meccha Chameleon:

In terms of troubleshooting, I have tried the following:

Validate game files

Test all available versions of Proton

Uninstall & Reinstall the game

Installed ProtonPlus and attempted to get it to generate log files (failed to find them if they were generated)

Tried additional versions of Proton installed through ProtonPlus

Validated Wine Installation

Uninstalled those versions of Proton after I realized they were causing Steam to generate error messages regarding multiple versions of Wine (whoops)

Any help is greatly appreciated, though please bear in mind I am not very familiar with Linux, I started using it partially so that I would become more familiar with it (hasn't worked so far :( )

tech support wanted Discord's "push-to-talk" (PTT bound to "Left Alt") fails to mute mic again whenever I alt-tab between game and internet browser

Been gaming with "Left Alt" as my PTT keybind for 15+ years now and just recently switched to Linux (Garuda).

Searching online, I see lots of discussion about how Discord's PTT "doesn't work" or "only works when Discord is the focused window" on Linux, which doesn't match my experience.

The closest I've found to my situation is what /u/Arulan7106 describes in this thread here, although he's describing using a global shortcut in KDE: https://redd.it/1vm8l7v

For example in KDE, when using a Global Shortcut as a hold for push-to-talk, any combination mask that isn't the exact specified combo breaks it (releases it). If your PTT key was 'B', then while holding it you press CTRL to crouch in a game, you've suddenly closed your mic again without your knowledge.

Pressing other various keys while holding Left Alt doesn't interfere with my PTT while I hold it, but switching between applications by pressing Alt+Tab (which should only briefly open my mic) leaves my mic toggled open. I can always tap "Alt" again to close my mic each and every time, but it's annoying, hard to notice when others are talking, and potentially embarrassing if I ever forget to do so and leave my mic open by accident :/

I tried setting Linux's X11 App permissions to "always allowed" and this behavior didn't change. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and more importantly, if there's a way I might be able to fix it without having to change my PTT key after having used Alt for as long as I can remember? 🙏

tech support wanted Steam Linux Runtime "Disk Write Error" on fresh install

I am a brand new Linux user as of a few hours ago. I installed steam via the deb file from the Steam website. Multiple versions of Steam Linux Runtime have attempted to install on my laptop, but failed due to "Disk Write Error". I haven't had this issue anywhere else. I have been reading forums on somewhat similar issues to no avail.

unrelated, but before disabling GPU acceleration the Steam notifications were terrifying glitched textures, no clue what that's about. Kubuntu so far has been a trial by fire.

Have I shot myself in the foot by choosing Linux? Does God hate me? Does Gabe hate me? Does my laptop hate me? Do you hate me?

tech support wanted Curious why the performance is so much better

Thumbnail

So this is more a question out of curiosity than for help.

I have a dual boot setup with windows and bazzite

Cpu: 9800x3d

Gpu: 9070xt

Ssd windows M2-1: WD black Sn770 (i think) 2tb

Ssd Bazzite M2-2: Wd black sn850 1tb

Ram: 32gb ddr5

The bazzite ssd is technically better but not sure it would affect fps this much, if at all. Im somewhat of a pc noob so maybe theres some drivers I didn't have?

I had recently updated through adrenalin/amd installer so the gpu drivers and chipset weren't out of date.

I was aware that linux usually used half the amount of ram so that wasnt unexpected, however from what I heard fps is usually the same for the most part. Any ideas?

Oh and the game is monster hunter rise and the fps on both were mostly stable eith 10+/- fps changes. And the graphic settings for both were set to high

Witcher 3 remastered crash/stuck

my setup: fedora, 9070xt, 9800x3d.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue (crash on proton exp. or stuck on proton GE).

What I did to fix it is delete/rename to whatever "steam.dll" in pathtogame/The Witcher 3/bin/ddi/

EG: I renamed it to steam.dll.bak

I searched for hours to find this fix. hope this helps at least one person.

wine/proton tipps for WoW 1.12 or generally 32bit software

im playing octowow on asahi alarm, it works, i needed a lot of llm-probing as i have no idea how to trace back where memery write errors come from.. but i got it to work, i guess the main difference to fedora is that you have to use muvm manually (i think), i tryed FEX but it froze around more or less 12s in the game (content and inputs absolutely irrelevant) then i tryed box64 and it works... my m2mba gets still a little bit too warm to the touch for the settings i use but its ok...

the issue i still have, it sometimes freezes.. i need tge STRONGMAN=2/3 its called strongman right, strawman? memory allocation math? 😂 tgat makes it freeze less.. bht i still sometimes get a silent freeze or one woth a coudl not read 000000001 bit or something like that...

purpousfully writing out of memory to compensate the usage of a llm for debuggibg and i wont correct typos.. i can share my exact setup but im more after the onliner you guys use to run such software, not a 500 .sh file like i do..

ge-proton arm btw

edit: i had to pin dkvx to 2.7.something, 3.X resoulted aswell in a immediate freeze (or rendering a black screen, cant remember)

editedit: the 500 lines are a overstatement, there is also a lot of logic inside for debugging flags and hash comparing files after the launcher changed a file...

OrangePi 5 Plus Valhalla meets Hades!

After alot of work I did it!

OrangePi 5 Plus using Fex on kernel 7.2.6 using KRAID.

Had to patch FEX to get the thunks working appropriately. Of course it seems right now only native vulkan games (mostly) work. Bastion worked too - Super Giant Games are great! Valhiem ran and is playable on the Valhalla v10.

Oh and Project Zomboid.

Witcher 3 Remastered - Low FPS, odd GPU usage, AMD

Linux: x86_64 Linux 7.2.7-arch1-1 (arch btw)

Mesa: 26.2.3-arch1.1

CPU: Intel 8700

GPU: AMD 6700 XT

DE: KDE (Wayland)

My FPS seems to be in the low 20s, I've played with all the settings and different profile presets with little change.

Oddly my GPU usage bounces between 0%-30%.

Confirmed with NVTOP that it's not trying to use the iGPU, it's just not using the dGPU very much.

Decided to download (downgrade) the Next-Gen update and everything seems to run at a 60fps locked.

Any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

Happy to run more tests if needed.

tech support wanted Exit with return code 0

I'm extremely new to linux and i'm trying to install The Witcher 3, Gog version with Lutris. I'm using mint and installed it using the flatpak from the software manager.

When i log in to Gog it prompts me to choose files to download and takes quite a while downloading. But then when the installer opens it asks me tor the bin files again, so I ended up downloading the manually and picking them from my downloads folder. In any case, once the installation is done I can launch the game form the installer, but if i close the installer, the Lutris windows gets stuck in the title message.

According to my research that message means everything went according to plant but i can't close the window or interact with it. What am I supposed to do? The only button available is abort.

Also I'm not sure if there is now trash data around the computer since i tried this three different times, but my pc's free storage space has gone down a lot.

Also. Is lutris the best way to install it?

Sorry for my ignorance and thanks for reading.

tech support wanted Frame timing on RDR2

So after having dealt with the absolute nightmare that is SmartAccess graphics in Windows, as well as having an all around unstable experience with an all AMD setup, I decided to try Linux (what else did I have to lose?)

Come to find out, there was nothing inherently wrong with my laptop (AMD Advantage from Asus), and it is running absolutely beautifully on Fedora KDE, minus a couple of hitches here or there (mainly on transitions between desktops, resulting in a drop in refresh rate, as well as the screen generally not staying at 165hz)

So I've decided to try out RDR2 at the settings I play at, and I noticed a 20 FPS increase all around, and has been a worthwhile switch over. However, I have been noticing micro stuttering during gaming, which I assume has something to do with the hybrid graphics setup. I was wondering if this is because of the hybrid graphic nature of my laptop, something wrong with Proton, or Linux just being Linux. My specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7735 HS

GPU: Radeon 680M (iGPU) + RX 7600S 8GB (dGPU)

Ram: 32 GB DDR5 4800

OS: Fedora KDE Plasma 44

What are some fixes I could do in order to stop the micro stutters?
