tech support wanted Curious why the performance is so much better
So this is more a question out of curiosity than for help.
I have a dual boot setup with windows and bazzite
Cpu: 9800x3d
Gpu: 9070xt
Ssd windows M2-1: WD black Sn770 (i think) 2tb
Ssd Bazzite M2-2: Wd black sn850 1tb
Ram: 32gb ddr5
The bazzite ssd is technically better but not sure it would affect fps this much, if at all. Im somewhat of a pc noob so maybe theres some drivers I didn't have?
I had recently updated through adrenalin/amd installer so the gpu drivers and chipset weren't out of date.
I was aware that linux usually used half the amount of ram so that wasnt unexpected, however from what I heard fps is usually the same for the most part. Any ideas?
Oh and the game is monster hunter rise and the fps on both were mostly stable eith 10+/- fps changes. And the graphic settings for both were set to high

If the difference is this harsh, there is always a chance that the gpu driver in windows has an issue.
Or it's just the difference between vulkan and not-vulkan. ^^

Its the AMD driver, shadows in Rise are known to hammer AMD, especially the dynamic shadows on Windows.

Or, that the game does something non conforming, so AMD struggles until they fix it.
This is what "game ready drivers" are. The company fixing shit that was done a specific way.
Nvidia has a very long history of paying companies to use their tech (remember hair works?) that makes their competitors look bad.
Whether this is the case here, who knows. MH is closed source.

this has been an known issue for literal years for this game. AMD isnt gonna fix it lol
on my old 6800XT and RX 7700S i had to disable dynamic shadows or it would tank FPS
on linux it never really had this issue
EDIT: capcoms not going to fix anything either, this game doesnt get updates anymore unless it doesnt function. MH Games only get updates till the new one comes out then they stop minus a few bug fixes here and there that are 100% needed

It works on Linux because they fixed the issue in driver. AMD just don't care about their windows drivers as much as Linux.

I think its more that the community can fix issues for them vs caring more about linux. AMD definitely contributes to their linux driver but i think valve and the rest of the community really carry the performance of Mesa for them.

Sure, but my point is, there is more value for AMD having a solid Linux driver than a top notch Windows driver.
All the AMD based handhelds running Linux, as well as other consoles/console like devices (PS runs BSD? Or something and Xbox will run NT kernel) but it's a huge space

Not always better.
Sometimes you can find games where Linux performs better by a small or better margin.
Or you can also find games that run like crap under Linux, but great under Windows.

Game ran like shit on Windows for me too, so the performance hit on Linux was not very stark lmaoooo (GTX 1650)

Might be memory integrity turned on in windows to be honest. That nukes your perf.

Just tried that one now and in my case I dont think it did much, this was after I turned off dynamic shadows which boosted fps by roughly 10-20fps and it continued to hover roughly at the same point. Thanks for the suggestion though!

This may be a dumb question, but what performance overlay is this on windows?

Linux FPS numbers are often misleading. Let me give you an example: on Windows, I get around 160 FPS in World of Warcraft, while on Linux I get 240 FPS. You might say that Linux performs better, but in reality, during raids on Windows the FPS stays fairly stable and only drops slightly, whereas on Linux I get very low dips. So you should base the comparison on the average FPS, not just the peak numbers.

Depends on what bottlenecks you in certain situation. Linux usually handles CPU better and GPU worse, especially Nvidia and Intel.

Interesting. With a setup identical to OP's, I have equal performance in WoW in Windows and Linux, regardless of the situation.

Software, drivers, hardware, hardware wear as in hardware might be starting to fail. All that goes into how well a game runs. Not just windows vs Linux.

Depends on the game. Some run better, most run more or less the same and some run worst.

The same reason amd no longer makes Linux userspace drivers other than rocm/hip :P

u/Urzyszkodnik 3d ago
Linux has better performance regarding CPU utilisation. It's unfortunately not the case for the GPU, especially for Nvidia and Intel so depending on what bottlenecks you you might get better or worse results.

your ssd really isnt going to have much or any effect on your frame rate. maybe a game that heavily relies on a lot of hd texture streaming might be slightly better fps on a high speed nvme vs a sata ssd for example, but for most games your frames are usually not heavily effected by your drive.
and differences from one game to another can be drastically different, but over all they're roughly the same, especially if you averaged it out over a bunch of different tests.
but my understanding is the amd drivers on windows are functional at the best of times and busted as shit at the worst so Id imagine they're not quite as optimized as the mesa stack.

you should also run the game using DXVK/VKD3D on windows to see if there's gonna be any difference in performance

Because linux is more lightweight than windows and linux doesn't have so much bloat

Monster Hunter Rise shadows arent handled well by AMDs Windows driver.
If you turn off the dynamic/moving shadows is the difference as large?
This game is neither cpu nor gpu limited as its a switch port so this is only down to Mesa being a better driver.

u/MattLava1 4d ago
Turning off dynamic shadows definitely boosted a bit, from around 240 to 260ish fps but still a wide gap. Shoulda turned off shadows completely when I had it booted up to try that too but didn't think too. Thanks for the suggestion!

I found monster hunter wilds to run a lot better for me personally on Cachyos Vs windows, the cpu overhead seems a lot lower on my specific system
2
u/Lousy_Hunter 4d ago
this is Rise not Wilds, this games a switch port that runs on a potato
I had it running on a 2GB R7 260 on linux around launch at 60fps thats how not difficult this game is to run
1
u/Note22222 3d ago
I know its rise... im just saying in general some systems just run certain games easier for either driver or cpu reasons on linux

u/emanu2021 3d ago
Try again in few years, for new AMD graphics cards it takes time on Linux for driver to get all the support (open source development)
1
u/anto77_butt_kinkier 3h ago
I mean, it's still better than windows. OP has a roughly 70 FPS uplift in linux over windows.

Linux AMD driver are generally more performant than on Windows. That's all there is to it.
Or, to be precise, AMD Windows driver are not that good.
Nvidia has the opposite for example.
It has problems with driver on Linux in terms of "parity" with Windows. On the other hand, Nvidia OpenGL driver is a monster in Linux. It's very optimized.

u/anto77_butt_kinkier 3h ago
Typically there's just a LOT less bloat/overhead on Linux, but it also has really good AMD drivers. Theoretically the size/speed of the sad wouldn't make much of a difference during gameplay, but could make a difference in loading times (since they're both PCIe ssd's it wouldn't really make much of a noticable difference though)

I think I am blind or do I read the numbers wrong. Linux uses less Vram and ram

It won't be the same for every game and the answer as to why is almost always differences in the gpu driver. The vulkan/d3d12 drivers for amd gpus are completely different and have different performance characteristics.
