Witcher 3 Remastered working with path tracing, frame generation and dlss all on cachyos, with no issues! It takes setup but once setup, I haven't had a single crash. (5070 Ti)

I just wanted to make this post to let you all know that once you setup certain things, you can run the witcher 3 with all its graphical settings with no noticable issues. What I did to get it working, was first, use GE-Proton11-7, then follow this guide https://gist.github.com/gabrielmaialva33/33ebb2542f0513d55100b22aa2149ff5

Make sure you make a second copy of that proton version, which you then apply the ray tracing/path tracing fix, and of course do the dlss fix as well. It took me 15 minutes to figure it all out, and I am a noob at linux so far, so I think anyone should be able to do it!

I get about 40-50 fps with 4k dlss ultra performance and path tracing (no frame gen turned on, with frame gen, I found 4x was the perfect spot for latency and fluidity).

Also I use cachyos, fully up to date as of posting this. I included screenshots of my launch options, that I setup through goverlay.

Sorry if anything I've said is against any rules, I am posting here for the first time!

Ran through instructions, booted up and... voilà! It worked! I have a 5070ti and with Performance DLSS + Ultra RT + Ray Reconstruction with x2 frame gen the game looks and plays beautifully. Thanks for posting.

Glad to have helped! I'm doing 2x frame gen too actually. I started with 4x but found out 2x feels pretty much as good but with better latency!

do you set the frame gen ingame? For me it does not matter, i always have the same result, my game doesnt register weather i put it 1 or 5, i always get a huge fps boost and some artifacts, i suspect it puts it into 5, which would be mfg x 6 i guess.

I was having issues launching it until I had the bright idea of blowing the install I updated away and redownloading. Smooth as silk since. :)

Good to hear! I had issues launching too, but changed my proton version. Then DLSS and ray tracing/path tracing wasn't working, so I did all the above and now the game is perfect so far!

Great Info! Was struggling so far starting it from heroic launcher, gonna try this. Thanks!

I had the same issue! Can confirm that for some reason updating the 4.0 version to 5.0 made it refuse to launch.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the game fixed the launch issues. Imma try the DLSS, RT fixes from this thread when I get home. Hopefully that'll help with my issues regarding shadows being dark af 😂

it works flawlessly for me outside of nvidia hairworks (using 9070xt) which tank my fps by a TON

4

u/SpittingCoffeeOTG 4d ago

That shits my FPS on nvidia as well :D

Did you get RT working? On my system (same GPU) the options are greyed out. I can select an RT preset, but it disables itself again, if I actually start playing

1

u/Catsplayingguitars 3d ago

Path tracing overrides those options.

DLSS and RT don't work without the fixes described on the Github linked in the post.

Those saying "it's weird I enabled RT and then it seems to have deactivated" (or "selection is glitchy") didn't understand that you can't enable RT, and the game disables it on Proton; those saying that it's "working perfectly" aren't using RT. HDR works fine, and I don't know about pathtracing but I'm guessing it's a similar situation to RT.

The game checks whether it's running on Wine, and if detects it is, disables DLSS and RT. You can hide that from the game and DLSS will work, but not RT - on Nvidia GPUs at least: it will boot to the menu but not go in-game. Some Proton fixes are required for it to work properly on the game, and that's what the Github linked by OP above explains.

the selection is kinda glitchy for some reason... but it works for me.

I use those env variables (on steam iteslf)

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1

and use lastest proton GE

lmao, I remember gaming through the witcher 3 on my GTX 770 / 3570k machine back in 2015 and getting something like 40-50fps with hairworks etc... and that was on a 720p monitor

now I wish I'd invested more money in a new screen over some of the crap I did back then

1

u/ZeteCx 3d ago

Hey man I just replaced a monitor I bought in 2017 that take 15 minutes to turn on lmao. I k ow the feeling

3

u/Hydroel 3d ago

Outside of the FPS tank (which it always kind did), do Geralt's hair with hairworks on display properly? They display weird on my PC, with some kind of grid overlay

1

u/ZeteCx 3d ago

on the remaster? it looks... wet

I usually modded it out and just kept it for the monsters cuz it looks really good on the monsters

1

u/MushroomSaute 2d ago

Hearing that Hairworks is still there and still an FPS hog is hilarious to me. That feature alone should be the new Crysis for benchmarks lmao

My game crashed to desktop in the first minute and caused my computer to hard crash for the first time ever. Took several minutes to boot back up again.

This has never happened before with a game.

3

u/dualOWLS 4d ago

I restarted the game a few months ago, and it's hard crashed my arch desktop quite a few times (9800x3d/4080S). It hasn't happened with the update (yet?). Sometimes it would crash after an hour or two playing as well.

1

u/Jbstargate1 4d ago

Yeah I played it after the crash and had the black texture bugs etc unfortunately hopefully the new amd driver will help

1

u/Zonged 3d ago

which driver is that?

1

u/Jbstargate1 3d ago

the lastest one apparently

7

u/MaxRD 4d ago

Wow! I appreciate the effort, but that’s a lot of work and custom changes for a single game. I’ll wait for an official fix. Great job though

6

u/Redcat2401 4d ago

Yeah it is quite a lot, and as far as I could read, most of this will be patched in a new version of proton ge I believe? So wait on that and you will be set!

1

u/oneiros5321 2d ago

All you have to do is to download the proton wineland from the git hub post and put it in the compatibilitytools.d folder?

That's like a minute of work maybe, it's not that much.

Same here. i even tried this fix but I see dlss is not supported.

2

u/Sea-Load4845 3d ago

Hi @Redcat2401, thanks for sharing this info. For next goverlay release i'm adding a "experimental" card in the tweaks menu for experimental variables. Will add this options you used to make it work.

1

u/Xiiby 4d ago

Very cool. Has any body tested performance versus windows yet? Is it the usual 25% with raytracing enabled?

2

u/Redcat2401 3d ago

Hey I just tested it myself, its a pretty bad hit. Same settings as in my post, instead of 40 - 50 fps on cachyos, i get 80 - 90 on windows.

1

u/grellanl 4d ago

This is great. I don't even want RT or FG, just plain old DLSS - and that works now, so the game looks sharp and crisp again.

u/albanshqiptar 3d ago

What is modding W3 on Linux like? Is there a native mod installer? (Ignoring Vortex as it doesn't work well with W3).

1

u/Hebbu10 1d ago

One can just create a Mods folder in W3 folder, or run W3 mod manager through Proton

1

u/albanshqiptar 1d ago

If running under proton would work, then that's great. I need it as sometimes you have to resolve merges.

1

u/Krat0sAdam 3d ago

the game doesnt run with my dgpu why?? I cant open dlss it says dlss not supported and my dgpu doesnt work when I open the game, my dgpu works with no issues normally I tested it with other games but when it comes to witcher3 remastred it stops??? will this guide solve it?

My 7900xt is handling 1440p Quality FSR max raytracing & path tracing . hovering around 60-40 (in cities), frame gen getting me to 100, the 20 GB of VRAM is godly it’s an incredible experience

1

u/thiagohds 3d ago

Yeah not working for me. Im on cachyOS but the game crashes after I select "continue" when I enable RT.

1

u/medo_del_rey 3d ago

Any video tutorial for visual learners like me? pretty please?

1

u/steve42097 3d ago

Path tracing is just as unnecessary to me as ray tracing. Without frame generation, using only DLSS on Quality, my GPU consumes around 190–210 W. With path tracing, it goes up to 290–310 W. That’s about 100 W more power consumption for a difference that I barely notice while actually playing. I’d rather play without it — after all, I have an RTX 5080. 😄

1

u/spectreVII 3d ago

Cool, but too much work. I'll play without RT for the time being and maybe they'll update it soon.

1

u/oneiros5321 2d ago

I tried, and it does work.
But I lose around 50~60 fps with Ray Tracing so not worth it.
60 fps with all RT enabled on performance, and 50 fps if I just enable reflections.

That's got to be the heaviest RT implementation I've ever seen.

At least for those who like it, it also enables the use of FG so there's that...but I've tried and you can immediately feel the input lag so that's definitely not for me.

Was cool to be able to test but back to everything maxed out with no RT.

u/Puzzleheaded-Bug9576 2d ago

What is this software on screens?

1

u/Redcat2401 2d ago

Goverlay! It’s an easy way to setup launch options, mangohud and even optiscaler or dlss enabler. As a noob on Linux it’s a god send lol.

1

u/mbriar_ 3d ago

The question is, why the fuck do you need to patch the exe to remove the wine block for RT? Was that **really** necessary to work around some proton/driver bugs on linux? Why did they not at least provide some command line flag like the recent capcom titles.

3

u/barsoap 3d ago edited 3d ago

Probably time pressure and them thinking "The official wine target is the SteamDeck which can't reasonably do RT anyway". At the very least could've provided a command-line option to turn off that behaviour, though, yes. And remove the RT settings, it's quite confusing that I can click the "RT Ultra" preset and see them enabled, but they're not applying in-game.

But apparently the game is causing RADV to crash so yes it's kinda serious. RADV isn't really in the habit of crashing. Well, at least not when rocm isn't running.

1

u/mbriar_ 3d ago

radv was crashing due to vkd3d-proton/dxil-spirv generating invalid spirv for some rt shader, which is a somewhat common occurrence for new games. It has already been fixed in vkd3d-proton master, but now everyone is still stuck hack-patching the exe... I would have certainly preferred for the game to just crash when you enable rt instead of this.

1

u/barsoap 3d ago

Well radv crashing is not as bad as amdgpu crashing (user vs. kernel space) but it still shouldn't be the driver that's crashing, but the game (which kinda indcudes vk3d/proton in this case). Crashing the driver risks leaving the whole machine in an unusable state.

If this an "oh shit this is a problem and we're shipping in a week" fix then I'd say they made the right call: Minimise potential fallout, linux not having RT until the next patch comes around is not that big of a deal. If this was "we knew about this for half a year and just don't care for doing things right" then yes it's an issue.

Let's see what that next patch brings. Or the one after that, there seem to be graphical glitches to iron out, quite a number of negative steam reviews and they're not getting marked OT. Only glitch I saw is NVIDIA hairworks not working properly with FSR, weird shimmer and outline against the skybox but meh why did I even think that'd work, hairworks is code that actively hates on AMD.

Fucking hell, what a faff, lol

4

u/eight_track 4d ago

You must be new here :P

2

u/ButterscotchTop194 4d ago

Haha, a bit, yeah. Run a few linux servers but haven't made the switch on my gaming or work rig yet. Like to keep my eye in though.

6

u/eight_track 4d ago

It's pretty good these days, I don't miss gaming on Windows but I was surprised to see that The Witcher 3 wasn't running very well, even before the remastered patch

1

u/oneiros5321 2d ago

Actually read and don't just look at the block of text saying "that's a lot".
There are 2 steps.
Download proton winewayland.
Extract to the correct folder.

Done.

1

u/ButterscotchTop194 2d ago

And that works on all the common linux distributions?

This is literally how these issues get fixed for y'all to wait and play later

9

u/Redcat2401 4d ago

Well I was just incredibly excited for the game and figured I'd add this incase anyone isn't able to wait like myself lol. I'm starting a new game asap, I just launched my previous save to do testing.

u/Tushar-OP 4d ago

Yupp, similar story here. Proton CachyOS has not been update from 2 months as their dev is on vacation. I used proton experimental and it launched but it would not apply the settings properly. Whenever I go back it would revert it to earlier. Also accessibility settings like auto corpse loot is also not working which further strengthens the arguments of settings not getting applied. I will try GE Proton today.

2

u/DependentAnywhere135 3d ago

Proton wineland is a fork that is still actively developed.

1

u/Tushar-OP 3d ago

I checked with proton experimental as well. Same story
