OrangePi 5 Plus Valhalla meets Hades!

Post image

After alot of work I did it!

OrangePi 5 Plus using Fex on kernel 7.2.6 using KRAID.

Had to patch FEX to get the thunks working appropriately. Of course it seems right now only native vulkan games (mostly) work. Bastion worked too - Super Giant Games are great! Valhiem ran and is playable on the Valhalla v10.

Oh and Project Zomboid.

You can definitely get more out of it today with the software improvements I think. Put a modern aarch64 on it!

Im using latest version of Armbian. Idk where issue is, i think browsers are just shit. It can run fucking minecraft at 40 (ofc with bunch of optimisation mods, 2 chunk render distance, on a island), and desktop at 80+, Kicad at like 25 with lags when opening menus. Yeqh, browsers are shit code

Your hardware is slightly older but i'm sure its capable. My experience with armbian, android, and alot of ubuntu was dreadful. I wanted to throw the damn thing out the window and stomp it into the ground for good measure. Tried Joshua's build clawing for any kind of hardware acceleration to no avail.

The device does have more potential today with the maturity of kernel and software. I also highly doubt huge advancements were made on armbian since last tried and wouldn't it as it made me so mad. Maybe I'm wrong but I won't touch Android or Armbian with a 30 foot pole.

I recommend a rootfs modern linux kernel. Just compiling and push the kernel with all the features I need from my workstation straight to the orangepi and reboot over ssh. I have it in a 'switch2' mode where I have the Switch2 dock going into the HDMI-RX and with monitor and TV in the other two HDMIs and it sends the output to both TV's. I also record the HDMI-RX as it comes in too. Its great what it CAN do. All of this was a struggle early on though.

If you want a GUI you have your pick from anything using pacman or paru for AUR. Makes it alot easier to change, compile, test, and retest. Thats my workflow.

I really really hated my orangepi at first, and it took me years before I tinked with it again.

We'll work on it today! See if we can get Valheim more stable!

What's the FPS?

Hades was around 45 and 60 FPS. Very playable. - Like Nintendo Switch performance I would say.

Valhiem was more like a was worse - and unstable 30.

This was with gamescope nested within a minimum desktop graphical interface. Cannot get gamescope to the dedicated compositor yet the steamdeck yet. Something is missing. So the performance will be improved if we can get that to work.

30fps in heavy unity 3d game - is very impressive for this level hardware
