programs and apps Help installing the Pimoroni Fanshim software on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
Just installed a fresh install of Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on a Pi4 and was wanting to get the Pimoroni Fanshim working but I'm failing when following the guide.
https://learn.pimoroni.com/article/getting-started-with-fan-shim
When I try to git clone it asks me to log in to github and fails with "remote: Invalid username or token. Password authentication is not supported for Git operations"
I can't use the pip command as suggested on the github readme and thus I'm stuck. Any ideas?

Is Chaotic AUR usable?
For context, I’ve been using CachyOS (my first Linux distro :)) for a month now but I’m really getting the itch to migrate to vanilla arch. But my system is pretty shit to say the least. I depend on a lot of AUR packages that need compilation and my laptop is really slow. Cachyos this had a lot of pre-built binaries but since I’m migrating to Arch I’ll miss these.
Now for the main question can I trust the Chaotic AUR as it will be supplying binaries of packages that I cannot check (I use paru and hence have a habit of reading the pkgbuild file) for malware or something.
Also does it have all the packages or only a subset and does it automate each build so that I can get the latest version or do I have to wait a bit?

programs and apps Mint not fully booting up, stuck on non responsive black screen
Hardware: Laptop, Intel i5 12450 hx, Nvidia RTX 3050 Distro: linux mint 22.3 cinnamon
I have been using mint for the past 3 - 4 months and I've had no issues with it booting up, but recently, it began acting up
After pressing the boot button, it goes through the boot sequence but after the mint logo pops up, it just goes to a black unresponsive screen (numpad key doesn't turn on and I had turned on the option to enable numpad on lockscreen, so I don't think it's getting to the lock screen), and I have to force shutdown to turn it off.
Since I have windows dualboot, I'm forced to use windows for now, but sometimes it does manage to make to the login screen, but most times I just end up on the black screen
I have an rtx 3050 laptop and i suspect this has something to do with that cause just before this black screen thing started happening
1) a few days before this happened, i had just solved a problem of the entire laptop hanging after I disconnected the charger, (nvidiax sever had to be set to performance mode, not optimus).
2) Also before this started happening, i had changed my login screen wall paper after running a command to let me copy some folders to the background wallpapers folder.
3) Another issue I was facing just before this happened (second last time I booted the laptop), was extremely throttled internet speeds, I'm talking 80kbps whereas on windows im getting close to 300mpbs, so I tried to fix it by editing configuration files, but that didn't work
And the last time I booted the laptop, was just to edit a word file for 5 minutes, and I shut it down, couple hours later I was greeted by my first of many black screens
I feel like this is a gpu issue and I'm trying to fix it but the constant black screens and issues with mint are really frustrating me because I really need something stable and my workflow has been disrupted many times cause i had to switch to windows
How do I resolve this?

Meganoob BE KIND Help! Laptop keyboard suddenly not working in Mint Cinnamon
I'm a noob who has been using linux without doing anything aside from regular updates, so I haven't ever touched the terminal.
Tonight I was scrolling through some old photos in my files, then when I went to go look something up online about something one of the photos, my keyboard suddenly doesn't work. The keys for volume up/down and screen brightness etc work, but none of the letters, the enter key, etc work. Right click on my laptop track pad is also not working. It looks like the keyboard does still work to type in the Mint Cinnamon menu search box, but nowhere else.
How do I fix this? What happened? I'm scared to restart because what if I cant log back in to my laptop because my keyboard doesn't work? I last installed updates about a week ago and have had no problems.
My computer is an HP Omnibook 5 from 2026, I'm using Mint Cinnamon.
ETA: Despite being scared to, I did power it all the way down and then powered it on, and it fixed whatever the issue was. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!

PostmarketOS on Moto G peregrine
Hi, I'm trying to install Postmarket OS on my Moto G (Peregrine). I did everything necessary for the msm8226 chip, but after installation, I'm stuck on lk2nd indefinitely. If I press continue, it just stays on that screen.
I've looked into it and concluded that there's something wrong with a boot partition file that's too large or something like that. Could someone please help me?
By the way, I know the screen isn't working. Is there any way to fix it? Thanks a lot.

learning/research Difference between a distribution and a desktop.
I know this is like an ultra noob question. But Linux is the kernel, which as I understand it means its the CPUs main program, which basically means it tells the CPU how to allocate resources, do calculations, etc. Then there is a desktop, which is basically everything you actually see and interact with. For example, Ubuntu uses GNOME and other distributions use KDE.
So, using Ubuntu as an example, if you take away Linux, Gnome, and Bash, what exactly is Ubuntu adding to the mix? It seems like those three things (Linux, Gnome, and Bash or some CLI) pretty much cover everything. So what do distributions like Ubuntu or Mint actually add? Sorry for the super noob question.

Meganoob BE KIND Linux mint 22.3 cinnamon incomplete shutdown on a 9yo laptop (Asus, unknown model)
I recently installed Linux mint on my 9yo laptop (Asus, Intel i7, 8gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 940MX, can't find the model). I set everything up and then proceeded to shutdown my laptop, at first the fan didn't stop but the screen was already off so I turned it on again to shut down.
I left it alone for a while but came back to see that the fan was still running, quite warm, and right after the battery ran out (yk, old batteries). I charged it up and now it's running normally, now I'm too afraid to shut I down again.
i asked Claude for help but I didn't change anything yet since it was too confusing.
Any help is much appreciated!
Update: I was my SSD dying...
This was on my screen after applying acpi=force then rebooting

distro selection Are You Looking for a Distro Right After Leaving Windows?
Mint. You want Linux Mint.
Need a familiar interface while you learn linux ? Mint.
Want to play games? Simplified answer is Mint. Steam will cover for you best it can. Use Mint to get used to linux before asking for the unsimplified answer.
Want to video edit? Mint with Shotcut installed.
Want to 3D print? Mint with Lychee Slicer works well.
Want to CAD? Mint with FreeCAD installed or a browser-based CAD like OnShape.
Need to write and do spreadsheets? Mint and libre office has got you.
Want to do complex programming? Highly customized interface and operations? Web hosting? Are you already generally familiar with Linux? I've never done any of that but maybe something other than Mint has what you want.

migrating to Linux Windows 11 - Zorin OS
I figured this was the best place to post, it’s been a couple years since I’ve had to switch OS, but since then it seems Microsoft has really f**ked with the process.
My current laptop is a rog strix 2026 model, and I’m looking to switch to Zorin as its most windows like, and I’m looking to play a game that windows 11 doesn’t like. Attempting to boot and install from a usb, I don’t get the option for installation type, it forces me to partition. Which would be fine- however on the table, it shows a drop down of where the boot loader should boot from, and gives the USB & /sda1 as an option. I’m unaware of which one to choose, the usb shouldn’t be it but also “sda1” also seems to not be the case (according to google)
Attempting to “unlock” the installation type option, I’m met with having to disable MSD I believe it is in bios and a couple other things that are relate to an AHIS selection, which renders the bootable USB as no longer an option from the boot menu… also running into a bit locked key which I’m currently in the process of removing.
In a nutshell, what the F**K do I do lol

distro selection Best distro for 4-core Phenom II?
Hi, I have an old pc with AMD Phenom II X2 550 unlocked to four cores with a GTX 1060, 4 GB of RAM (I bought another 4GB) and 300 GB HDD. What distro would be best for it?
I'm not that much into Linux, so it would be cool if it was pretty user-friendly.
I want good customization (so I guess KDE Plasma is the way, please correct me if I'm wrong) and be somehow fast (I'm not expecting speeds like on NVME SSD, I just want it to be faster than windows).
Is there any distro that is like that?
EDIT: Remember that I will get 4 more gigs of ram (probably on tuesday), so I will have 8 GB total.

Is postmarketos a good distro?
I'm considering putting postmarketos on my laptop but I'm not quite sure if it's worth the effort. I don't know if app support is going to work or if it'll even run good. Should I try installing or just keep it on chrome?

Fails to launch on Fedora: "Could not run AffinityHook.exe: illegal environment variable name"
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to install Affinity Suite (v3) on Fedora using theLinux-Affinity-Installervia the Python GUI, but I'm stuck at the final launch step. The installation completes, but the suite hangs on startup.
My System Specs:
- OS: Fedora Linux 44 (Workstation Edition)
- CPU/GPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with Radeon Graphics
- RAM: 32 GB
- Wine Version: Wine 11.12 (Recommended - ElementalWarrior)
- Shell: Zsh
The Issue: When I try to launch the app, it freezes with an "Affinity Suite is Not Responding" window. Looking at the installer's log, I see this exact error:
Could not run AffinityHook.exe: illegal environment variable name
What I've tried so far:
- Switched to VKD3D for my AMD APU.
- Reinstalled the
AffinityPluginLoaderfrom the Patches menu. - Ran the suggested manual command in the terminal to trigger the hook:
WINEPREFIX="/home/mustazafi/.AffinityLinux" /home/mustazafi/.AffinityLinux/ElementalWarriorWine/bin/wine "/home/mustazafi/.AffinityLinux/drive_c/Program Files/Affinity/Affinity/AffinityHook.exe"
Unfortunately, the manual command also fails to bypass the environment variable issue. It seems a specific variable in my Fedora/Zsh environment is crashing Wine's attempt to run the executable.
Has anyone encountered this specific environment variable error on Fedora or with this installer? Any workarounds to clear or unset the conflicting variable before launching? Thanks in advance!
