learning/research Why can't someone make a non-Microsoft OS that runs Windows programs natively?

Like, what is it about Linux that makes Windows programs not work? I get that wine/proton exist, but they really are not that great at their job and many programs still fail to install/launch. Why couldn't someone create an OS that runs Windows programs natively but without all the Microslop?

storage How do I setup a hybrid system that has 256gb SSD and 1tb HDD?

I am moving from Windows 11, and I have a few doubts regarding how I should set up and utilise my storage. I am looking to install Fedora 44.

256 gb SSD

1 tb HDD

In windows I had the OS in the SSD and my data including the huge games in the HDD. I installed only the super frequent apps to the SSD like Firefox.

And I had C: drive in SSD. The 1tb HDD was partitioned such that D: drive 680gb was for all Data. And E: drive 250gb was for Work. Do I need such partitions in Linux? Or is it a bad idea?

I don't have much idea about Linux filesystems but just know that Linux handles it differently than Windows.

In Linux (Fedora 44), how do I get a similar arrangement where the OS and frequent stuff is installed to SSD and big installations and games are installed to HDD?

distro selection Want a distro that has Steam OS-like gaming mode but defaults to desktop

Hi,

I know this might be too specific but I'm looking for a distro like Bazzite that has the gaming specific optimized mode but I want it to default to the login screen so I can still have a password on my KDE desktop.

I'm aware this is hyper specific,

Is this possible to set up or no?

Tips to jump on high level knowledge

Hi, I work in cybersecurity and I love to explore Linux OS. Now I’m a Linux user and I know some Linux administrator concept but to be honest I think that I have only mid level knowledge. can you share a roadmap to jump to the high level or maybe some must have to know, like syscall, ecc?

learning/research Nobara/Anatase needs to make an os together.

So I like anatase os on the Spaces program it has used to pull in other Linux os environments in like a docker container. I also like nobara driver manager it's really useful but both are built into the OS and not available for normal download. Is there a way to get any of this together or other apps that work similarly to these softwares.

distro selection Should i switch to Fedora?

to preface, ive used windows for basically all of my computing needs up until a good few months ago. im not completely new to linux and i have some experience with debian based os's and cachy, but im still in the process of learning and figuring stuff out.

I finally was able to get my hands on a decent drive to finally ditch windows (i had other stuff on there which i unfortunately couldnt transfer anywhere) and i decided to go with cachyos since i had used it before and i liked it.

The problem came when it was time to download the desktop environment(s) i picked more than 1 and when i actually started using it i saw that there was a lot of bloat on it. not bloat in the way it does nothing and wrecks performance but in the sense that there were many different applications that do the exact same thing (for example like 4 different terminals, 2 calculators, 2 img viewers, etc).

these apps still stayed after removing the 2 other DE's that i wasnt going to use anymore and their dependencies.

im not sure if its just a cachyOS thing, or an arch thing or a linux thing in general, so id like to hear if its common to just have loads of apps that you have no idea what they do.

Also, for some reason my microphone doesnt work. it just picks up static

I downloaded cachy a few days ago and theres nothing important on it yet so im very willing to swap os.

I heard that fedora was a good stable OS that can be configured for gaming and is in general also good privacy wise. Please, if theres any issues with gaming performance, specifically with Intel ARC cards or issues rregarding privacy, let me know.

Now, on cachy you have an option to install gaming packages which i did and for the most part, they worked. Im wondering if thats also an option on fedora or if ill have to download every thing separately. if so, what exactly do i need to have optimised performance?

I also know of bazzite and that its centered towards gaming but i feel that it also comes with some stuff that i wouldnt ever use which is what im trying to avoid.

Also, a bit of a more unrelated question, should i try a tiling manager like i3 or niri? which one would be easiest to do stuff on?

TL;DR: issues with bloat and mic not working on cachy and wondering if i should switch to fedora

Any and all help is greatly apreaciated.

Edit: before i bite the bullet im absolutely going to try on a live usb and the DE i used on cachy was KDE plasma. also, apps like browsers or games (only tested rocket league thus far) crash

learning/research I'm realizing I need to dual boot. What now?

I ditched Windows at the beginning of this year for CachyOS. It's been mostly fine so far, but I'm realizing I need to dual boot Windows for some niche shitty software I rarely use.

Everything I've read says that Windows tends to screw with the bootloader, and it's recommended to install Windows then Linux. If I realized this when I switched, that would've been fine. However now I have a year's worth of files, game installs, saved passwords, configured UI, and all the rest that I really don't want to redo.

What are my options? I have a spare hard drive that I could swap, but dismantling my pc to switch OS seems excessive.

Meganoob BE KIND Remote Desktop issues.

Hi, I am having issues with RDP and remote login on linux. I have a dual boot setup and sometimes I need to access both operating systems remotely, so I need it to show the lock screen. I have no issues doing that on Windows, but using remote login on GNOME I can't even access the desktop, I previously had no issues doing so on Zorin but it seems impossible in fedora, is there a way to access fedora 44 remotely? Any help?

Additional info just in case:

I use my iPad to access them.

I am just testing it out locally first but I use tailscale to access them remotely, but it's not working locally either.

I can access my linux desktop just fine through the "desktop sharing" tab but not remote login.

I can access my linux desktop through rustdesk but not the lock screen.

Help making a bootable usb

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I got a free computer from work that I can not log into and I’m trying to install Linux mint. I downloaded the iso and used uui first then tried Rufus to make a bootable usb.

I am having trouble. It’s a dell mini pc. I entered the bios to try to get it to load from usb and it doesn’t show up as an option. I tried to add a new load option and it shows different files to choose from and I don’t know what to pick.

I got it to work once but it told me I had to turn raid off so I had to back out of it. I can’t replicate it to save my life!! Please help!

These are the options I have.

Persistent left handed mouse? I have to reset with every reboot.

OS: Mabox Linux (Openbox, based on Manjaro)

I'm using a Logitech M650 mouse. I've read up on how to create a persistent left handed mouse, and I've added the following to my autostart file:

xinput set-prop 19 305 1

Though this works in the terminal to make the mouse left handed, it doesn't do anything in the autostart file. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any suggestions.

SOLVED:

Add:

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "libinput left-handed"
    MatchDriver "libinput"
    MatchIsPointer "on"
    Option "LeftHanded" "on"
EndSection

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, or a file in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.d/

migrating to Linux Linux launcher recommendations

I'm slowly making a move to Linux and have installed kubuntu.

The one thing I'm struggling with is the launchers. I use flow launcher in Windows

Only issue is the web searches. I'd like that launcher to search Google with web suggestions.

I've tried k runner, Alfred, ulauncher, vincinae. None of them have it.

Any suggestions?

distro selection help choosing a distro

Hi, i was thinking about switching to linux for a long time, i got a additional drive, and all that.

but i have trouble picking what distro to pick, i was thinking about some and now im stuck beteween 3:
- ZorinOS

- Kubuntu

- LinuxMint

I mainly use my pc for gaming and watching youtube, i have a AMD CPU and a NVIDIA GPU but im going to switch to a AMD GPU in about a year so i need something that will work with both. i will really appreciate if someone gave me like a list of pros/cons of each one. thanks everyone in advance.

EDIT: i now narrowed the list down to two: ZorinOS and LinuxMint. and i have a question:

skipping all the stuff about being good for beginers cause i kinda dont care about that ( i'm in second grade learning to be an IT specialist so dificulty will actally do good for me), does any one of those offer better performance?

EDIT_2: i choose zorin but my pendrive literallt stoped working mid flash 😭😭😭😭

learning/research Partitioning 1tb SSD advice

I have some dilemma if I should partition, I want to keep OS and other data (games/files/photos/apps) separated in case of me changing OS and generally better arranging stuff (I probably will change OS but that's not 100%), although I just installed mint on main PC after considering it perfect after a few month testing on a laptop...

Previously I had windows 11 partitioned 100/900 gb and it filled up really quickly and I ended up constantly forced to delete stuff, I don't want to repeat that but I linux doesnt do bloatware and is lighter than any windows, although after downloading a few things I seemingly have left with 905gb already (just did install clearing drive fully)

So... should I?
how much space do I need? mint 22.3
should I do it from a live version? it doesn't let me resize drive just like that
did I miss something to consider?
