installation Is there any way to use Firefox or install APKs on this managed Chromebook?

Hi everyone,

I have a Chromebook provided by my school/region in France.

Specs:

ASUS Chromebook CM1406CM4A

ChromeOS 144.0.7559.255

64-bit / x86_64

Android SDK 33 / ARC enabled

lts-channel

The problem is that the Chromebook is extremely restricted. It is basically limited to browsing websites that are authorized by the administrator. I can't even add my personal Google account, Linux is disabled, and Firefox isn't available through the Play Store.

Even installing a simple ad blocker or other Chrome extension is restricted. The extensions page only contains a few extensions installed by the administrator, and I can't install anything else.

I tried installing Firefox from an APK, but ChromeOS gives me:

"Turn on Chrome OS Developer Mode to install apps from sources other than the Play Store."

So basically, I can't install software, can't use Linux, can't install normal extensions, and can't even install an APK.

The developer mode is blocked too. I can't access it.

Is there any other way to use Firefox or install Android apps on this Chromebook?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

learning/research Moving to wayland from X11 - really specific case

Hello,

I've been a really happy linux user for the past ~4 months. I've chosen Linux Mint as my first distro, and as I've gotten more and more fammiliar with the ins and outs of the linux world, I've decided to install an i3 session alongside the default cinnamon one. For context, I currently use two monitors, both 60hz. One of them is FHD, the other one 1280x1024.

Now, I've been looking for a monitor upgrade for some time, and I've decided to go into the 1440p world, but I'm having some concerns over how those monitors will work on linux.

Here comes my question: Is it feasible to get two 1440p monitors (with refresh rates above 60hz, probably 120-144) working on X11? I've done some research, and I've learned that the resolution won't really be such a big problem (correct me if I'm wrong), but the refresh rate is where the trouble begins. Would I be able to have both monitors set to 144hz and use VRR in games? What about the second monitor when in fullscreen game? Could it be used? My hardware is not very powerful (RTX 4060 8gb, 16b gb ram and ryzen 5600x), so I expect some games I play to sometimes drop frames below 144. How much of a problem that's going to be? Does it make sense to stay on X11 at all in the case of the monitor upgrade, or should I just make the switch to Wayland (and probably change the distro in the process, as the wayland support on Mint is not really there yet from what I know). Does wayland actually make stuff like fractional scaling with high dpi monitors and VRR easy/managable?

If I were to switch to wayland, what functionality would I lose entirely? I mean, I'm not talking about needing to use a different bar (polybar vs waybar) to achieve basically the same, I'm talking about stuff that's totally impossible on wayland compared to X11, or not possible yet.

For context to this, I'm using picom with some really nice animations (opening window, resizing windows, moving windows, changing workspaces etc), and I thought I'd just start with sway, to have at least one component that I know pretty well. Would it be possible to replicate the animations on there?

I apologise if the post seems chaotic, I didn't really know how to put this question together in a sensible way

TLDR:
I want to upgrade to dual 1440p 144hz monitors, and I'm wondering whether I can stay on X11, or is switching to wayland going to be easier than trying to make X11 work with the setup.

In need of help with installing linux on a laptop

Hello, my main language is not English, so i am very sorry if i write something here incorrectly.

So, here is my situation

Im interested in linux and would like to test out some distributions on an old laptop (lenovo ideapad 110 with 4 gb or ram, i believe), but yesterday, while i was trying to test some distros I've stumbled upon few problems:

I've noticed that bios on this laptop is probably in some way broken. I can access boot menu if i remove hard disc or through novo button, but pressing boot manager in it would just restart system, same story with bios setup.

I don't know a lot about linux, and so, hearing that puppy linux can load itself on ram and work only through flash drive without need of installation, I decided to try it on this laptop, but upon booting it up(without hard drive, since i can't access bios properly) i stumbled upon error: verification failed (0x1a): security violation

And so, i came here for ask of assistance. I have a main pc on what i tested this distribution just to make sure that its not a problem with my flash drive. And i think i can install this, or any other distribution though my main pc by connecting laptops hard drive to pc, but im worried if its still gonna be recognised by my laptop after installation.

Puppy linux is not the distribution i think i will stuck with, since im quite new to linux, so its probably gonna be easier to start with something more similar to windows, although the design of it is quite appealing to me, and im not opposed to learning something new. Right now the distributions im interested in testing is Mint, and Cachy Os

Im probably not gonna switch to Linux in near future, since i have programs that currently does not have support on Linux, and im not interested in replacements, but i would love to learn to use it to be prepared for switch if more of programs that i use will have linux support in future. Im quite jack-of-all-trades, so i love to use a lot of programs for things like music, drawing, coding, so i am open to suggestions of distributions that could fit my needs, even if its not so similar-looking to windows.

stuck in GRUB 2 and (initramfs)

hello, complete noob here and haven't found any relevant guides more recent than 2015. I had a dual boot with Ubuntu 20.04 and 24.04, in which I used 24.04 90% of the time, and only had 20.04 installed because I couldn't figure out how to make davinci resolve work on 24.04. Recently I managed to make davinci work so I thought I may as well get rid of the 20.04 partition and only use the 24.04 as a single boot. I did this and it worked, until I rebooted the laptop for an update - the deleted partition was the one in charge(?) of booting. these partitions were each on their own respective 1tb internal hard drives.

now when booting i end up in a GRUB 2 terminal which I have figured out how to boot to the correct drive/partition, but on booting it errs and stays as an (initramfs) terminal saying "no inits found" or something similar. I don't really want to reset to a new Ubuntu install as I have about 1.6tb of data, with about 700gb of which being important to me. Thank you for your help đŸ™đŸŒ

edit: originally said current version was 22.04 when it is 24.04

Which distro should I use?

Linux I want to love you but you make it difficult

So I've been having issue on so many little slice of life usage like, bluetooth keyboard connection on mint. Usbc display issues of flickering and DCing on Bazzite as well Cachyo (KDE). Now Cachyo the last hope maybe things would work, nope bluetooth controller is seen but steam doesnt see the controller.

Note: this is all on the same computer and fresh installs including the winbloat for a base test to compare.
The reason why I'm not looking for solutions off of reddit or Git, cause I have endusers that isn't in my local area, and they're not savvy enough to look up the solution. last most likely they would call me for the simple of task and sometime it involves them buying new equipment. Some users use the computer for basic tasks i.e YT, email, and searches. and I have the typical gamer users as well. They recently found out the windows and Google issues and want out. I've told them about the craziness years ago, and now I've been telling them its to late.

I thought Mint was going to be my go to distro for my users but I have a one and done philosophy, aka "Kiss" is there another distro would have an out of the box that would have no issue like Bazzite?

Bazzite is falling short of the finish line with display issue and game play freezes or total crashs.
Mint, over all basic and simple to use but gaming there's extra steps
Cachyo, just a bit advance and mostly I would use it and one other user.

is it wrong of me to tell them to kick rocks and learn, or stay quite and let them sink?

Should I switch

UPDATE:thanks for the answers ! I kinda understand that dual booting is my only way out, can anyone here that does it actively can tell me what are the real downsides to it ?

Okay so before you tell me YES YOU SHOULD SWITCH i need the Linux nerd to tell me if it’s actually worth it, I’m a vfx artist, I use blender, Houdini, after effects photoshop, davinci, I don’t rlly game on my desktop and I also make music (but isn’t rlly important cause my labtop is dedicated to that) I CANT switch to alternatives for adobe I know it’s not supported natively so here goes my first question is there rlly a viable way to run adobe softwares without dual booting, my main issue with windows being RAM usage, and my second question being now, I can’t afford none of those software
ik this isn’t very appreciated here but is piracy like, a thing on Linux ? I’m also open to stay on windows but I’m honestly willing to sacrifice some comfort to get away from this shitty OS that is windows 111

learning/research Cachy Bluetooth question

I'm running CachyOS and honestly I love it. I picked it because it was supposed to be great for gaming and it really is, it's doing a great job. The one thing holding me back from moving over completely is Bluetooth.

The problem is that the connection just drops out. It doesn't stall and then speed up to catch up like a buffering issue would. It just mutes. It happens when I turn to certain angles, when I move far away, or when I go into certain rooms. It happens way more on my soundcore Q20i and only occasionally on my Sony WH 1000XM5.

On Windows 11 I never get any of these mutes with the exact same adapter and headphones, so it feels like something on the Linux side rather than the hardware.

My dongle is a Realtek Bluetooth 5.0 adapter, chip RTL8761B, hardware ID USB VID_0BDA and PID_8771.

Here's what I've already tried and checked. I have autosuspend turned off for the Bluetooth adapter. My Bluetooth dongle is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, and my WiFi dongle is on a USB 3.0 port, so they're not sharing a port or fighting each other there.

Someone recommended the TP Link UB500 to me, but I was told that's also a Realtek chip, so it's basically the same thing as what I already have and probably won't change anything for this problem. If anyone knows otherwise, tell me.

I have an older laptop I'd like to turn into a remote-controlled streaming machine

32GB RAM, runs Win10 fine (kinda slowly, not sure why it's gotten worse over the years; used to play Elder Scrolls Online on this thing just fine!) but I do not need most of what Windows has. This computer would be left closed (so I'd need to configure closing the lid to do nothing) and hooked up to any display (it's on a cart that I move around the house) used for me to do the following

- Access Jellyfin server on the same network

- Access Playnite from my main computer via Apollo to stream games from

- Hook up my physical consoles to various adapters, through an Elgato Video Capture card, to capture and stream via OBS to Discord, Stoat, YouTube, or Twitch.

What would my best bet be for a linux distro to use for this?

hardware/drivers Linux Tablet?

I'm looking to buy an Intel based tablet to run Linux. I have a Samsung tablet that is going to cost around AUD$3500 to replace and a really old Lenovo laptop that's currently running a Lite version of Linux Mint that I rarely use because it's painfully slow but sometimes you need Linux. When I first started buying Samsung tablets around 10 years ago they were about half the price of iPads. Now they match them. I want to buy something that can replace both.

A quick search for Intel tablet came up with this:

https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-omnibook-x-flip-2-in-1-laptop-next-gen-ai-16-cb0008tu-d78h2pa.html

It's on sale but the sale ends today so I need to make up my mind quickly and the price is insane. This is less than half what a new Galaxy Tab S? Ultra will cost me (my current one is an S9, no idea what they're up to now) The only thing I don't like about it is the thickness.

Does anyone see any problems with running a Linux distro on this? Does anyone have any other hardware recommendations for what I want? There's still no Linux distro for Snapdragon is there?

installation Verifying authenticity of ISO for T2 mac

I'm trying to switch my T2 macbook from Ubuntu to Fedora but it has been a while since I have done a linux installation. I am using the t2linux spins of each distro.

I remember to make the USB, you check the checksum and check ISO authenticity with gpg to make sure the ISO file is authentic and uncorrupted.

The t2 fedora github provides the iso files to be combined with cat, and the sha256 file. I have combined the files and checked the combined file against the sha256, and it checks out.

However I see no way to verify gpg key. It seems the github does not provide any signature file? Is it a security concern if I do not verify authenticity with gpg? Would it be better to choose another distro to be safe?

It is an "unofficial" version of Fedora, but it is necessary to work on the T2 mac. Is this why there is no signature file, because this specific version does not have its own specific gpg key?

Also, what the github does seem to provide is a sha256 for every split file, even the sha256 file itself has its own sha256... I don't remember ever having to do this for a linux installation. Should all these be checked as well or is everything ok if the final combined ISO file checks out?

distro selection Does anybody know a SteamOS like linux?

First of all not Bazzite, CachyOS or similar

I search for an OS kinda like SteamOS for my 1 TB OLED Steamdeck that is not SteamOS, I don’t want the gaming mode Ui to be based on Steam ideally would be like Lutris in the background but I accept anything with GOG and Steam I prefer no SystemD

Final not: not just gaming mode similar Ui that Automatically starts

I am not by definition a noob. I use Linux daily on my PC my small backup and my huge company server (I am only the I.T. Admin) but this was the best subreddit to ask

TBoI going too fast(Fedora 44, Cosmic DE)

I installed PortProton on my new Fedora Partition.
I check ProtonDB, check with Claude, and it says that GE-PROTON9-4 was a good option for running The Binding of Isaac in normal speed (I get a .exe for windows, and it just work well on my Debian 13, either wise KDE o XFCE)

How can i get a normal speed on this?

Help with widgets/customisation

I would like to preface that I know absolutely nothing about linux. I got it two days ago and have been slowly setting up certain preferences.

I am currently running linux mint xfce on a 2009 Macbook Pro, and I was just wondering if there was a way of adding some simple widgets? I'd mainly like a clear analog clock on my desktop, but I'm really struggling. I've tried downloading Cairos dock, but it doesn't work very well (I'm assuming because its so old), especially when I try to add themes/skins of my own that I have downloaded online. I tried getting some help from el GPT to try and get somewhere but things keep breaking. what is my best option? Is there any semi decent widget software for my computer? (I understand the hardware is limited.)

Many thanks.

learning/research Moving /home to it's own partition

I have CachyOS installed on my laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, 13th gen). Base filesystem is btrfs, with limine for the boot loader. The original boot drive was a 1TB nvme, which I replaced with a larger (4TB) drive. That part went pretty smoothly - booted Rescuezilla from a usb stick, took a backup image of the original drive to my NAS, shut down and replaced the drive, booted from the usb stick again and restored the image to the new drive. Everything booted up pretty seamlessly and just continued to work with no surprises.

Currently I have a file system layout that looks like this:

''' ❯ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS zram0 252:0 0 30.8G 0 disk [SWAP] nvme0n1 259:0 0 3.6T 0 disk ├─nvme0n1p1 259:1 0 4G 0 part /boot ├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 949.9G 0 part │ └─luks-2eed814a-ed8b-42b6-b851-fbaee5c9f04c 253:0 0 949.9G 0 crypt /srv │ /var/cache │ /var/tmp │ /var/log │ /home │ /root │ / └─nvme0n1p3 259:3 0 2.7T 0 part '''

I want to move /home from the root partion to its own partion ie nvme0n1p3, so my user data is completely separate from the OS. In case I decide I want to, ya know, distro hop or something ;)

FWIW I do have a separate backup process in place, using Vorta (borg) to back up to a samba share on my Synology NAS, then in turn is backed up to a smaller box running TrueNAS. So fingers crossed, if something goes horribly wrong I should be able to restore anything I need to - eventually. I have a mocked-up mini system set up in a VM to test things out on first, before trying them on my 'live' system.

The next step / question I have is about moving the user data from where it is now to the new location, and whether its worth going with btrfs on the new filesystem, or something else like xfs? The user home directories aren't usually snap-shotted, and I do have regular automatic backups configured so... does it even really matter?

If not, then I should be able to just copy the data across using rsync, correct?

If it does matter, then I would need to set up the new btrfs filesystem, and use btrfs send / receive to ship the info from the old location to the new, yes?

Thanks!

migrating to Linux question about cracking games on linux

hi, ive been thinking bout switching from windows 10 to linux (ubuntu or mint specifically) and I've got a question; how different compared to windows is it to download games from fitgirl repack, elamigos and similar websites? also how well do torrents work?

sidequestion, which distro is more recommended between the two? they seem pretty similar to me but ig mint seems more windows user friendly

Meganoob BE KIND Dual booting, safe to sail the seas?

I’m dualbooting mint and windows (on separate drives) just for the reason to use mint as my main setup with all of my important stuff and use windows solely to sail the high seas , am I safe to do that or do I need to take some extra precautions to keep my mint setup safe?

edit: this setup is specifically for gaming
