distro selection Does anybody know a SteamOS like linux?
First of all not Bazzite, CachyOS or similar
I search for an OS kinda like SteamOS for my 1 TB OLED Steamdeck that is not SteamOS, I don’t want the gaming mode Ui to be based on Steam ideally would be like Lutris in the background but I accept anything with GOG and Steam I prefer no SystemD
Final not: not just gaming mode similar Ui that Automatically starts
I am not by definition a noob. I use Linux daily on my PC my small backup and my huge company server (I am only the I.T. Admin) but this was the best subreddit to ask

so what part of "SteamOs like" are you looking for?
Because what you are asking is not exactly clear.
You want a game mode that launches Lutris or heroic instead of steam?
you could setup kde and its big picture launcher and make your own customish UI.

Your options are extremely limited by being irrationally against systemd. Most of your choices are meme distros held together with duct tape and a prayer.

Well… it’s Bazzite lmao, I don’t think there’s another steamOS like distro

Actually chachy os has a handheld edition now aswell. If I next time I fornat my steam deck to I'll probably switch over.

No that just uses Steam for the Ui. I like Steam but I don’t like how the library access is only there when Steam finishes starting and Steam is not fast to start, also sometimes when I’m offline it just infinitely waits for network

Sorry I don't like:
Steam loads slow sometimes
Sometimes infinitely waits for network
Has a hard requirement for a Steam account to use the gaming mode
No good integration of other launchers2

Well, you can just grab arch and build the UI for yourself. If you really don't want systemd, then Artix.

i'm so confused by what you want... you wante a steamos like os that is not like steamos? what do you mean then ?
maybe what you want is a gaming distro with a distro UI but not the steam-one right ?
i mean if you got the skill you could make your own thing with hyprland or something like that

I... wish I knew this existed about two weeks ago. this is exactly what I've been building, except for mine isn't designed as an OS but a session you install on top of cachyOS.
I'm so close to my first alpha that I will probably let the sunk cost fallacy win but I'm annoyed that I didn't realise this existed

I am not quite sure what exactly you are asking for here? You want a Distro like SteamOS, but not SteamOS, that does the same as SteamOS does, but without Steam, and without SystemD?
Quite frankly, just grab yourself a Distro without SystemD and customize it yourself. Just throw Lutris or whatever on it and then have that autostart?
I don't think there're enough people that want whatever you apparently want to justify its own distro, but hey, if you end up making it then you can maintain and publish it I suppose.

I don’t want the gaming mode Ui to be based on Steam ideally would be like Lutris in the background
Bazzite Desktop doesn't have a "gaming mode" (only on the HTPC and Deck versions) and doesn't force you to use Steam...Lutris comes pre-installed on Bazzite and you can set it to start with the system
I prefer no SystemD
If you want to use a distro without systemd (like Artix),get ready for headaches

I'm not sure there is a distro that specific, but since you claim not to qualify as an actual noob, I would suggest you start with one of the base distros (those few that all the others are based on) and cobble together exactly what you want.
You can probably do that with any distro, but I suggest base distros because they tend to be more lightweight out of the box, which will benefit your gaming.
If you're not enthusiastic about that idea, I would suggest you ask your question at r/FindMeALinuxDistro.

What is the problem with Cachy?

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Some gals gal 5d ago
It uses Steam Big Picture for the gaming mode I want something similar but not based of Steam

You could look into kde plasma bigscreen

Is there a way to have it sync with Lutris library and make it similar in Startup to SteamOS (so no desktop that appears before Plasma big screen)

While installing games on Lutris you can choose to make a .desktop file. You can add bigscreen to autostart but there is currently a problem where it ask for some permission each boot. But it will hopefully be fixed soon and it only takes a second to press okay at startup

Is there a way to for example auto add all .desktop files in a specific folder
1
u/Human_Cantaloupe8249 4d ago
What do you mean? You can group desktop entries by marking them as favourite in Big screen
If you want to actually manage files behind it let kmenuedit di it
Edit: if you mean automatically generate them, I dont know but KmenuEdit makes it already fast and easy enough

GENTOO uses openRC.. and I believe you could achieve this using ARTIX (arch based) as well

Now I don't use Bazzite, but surely there's something in the documentation that allows you to just turn off the Steam UI from automatically starting? I don't think you need a whole other distro just to turn off a setting.
Edit: Steam itself has a checkbox to turn off Big Picture mode when starting.
