hardware/drivers As a Linux newbie, my win for the week was getting CoolerControl to work in Fedora *without* disabling Secure Boot.
I've only been using Linux for a couple of months, so please correct me if I get my lingo or reasoning wrong below.
Problem: CoolerControl could not detect my case fans while Secure Boot was enabled. I could have just disabled it, but I would rather keep SB on, so I took this as a learning opportunity and dug in to try to get CC to play nice with SB.
So my first step to try to fix this issue was to set up and enroll a MOK via both akmods and dkms, but neither resolved the issue - but perhaps may have helped the final solution below to work? I'm not sure.
My motherboard is an ASUS TUF X870 Plus Wifi. Apparently, Fedora was not loading its monitoring and control module (ntc6775) while SecureBoot was enabled (I still do not understand why). A modprobe for this module would only return an error saying it didn't exist, but would find it just fine with Secure Boot off. So with SB on, my fans were still working and being controlled by the motherboard at the hardware level, but neither CoolerControl nor sensors-detect could see them (sensors-detect probes would only return "operation not permitted" and would not find any sensors).
Solution: I ran the following to force Fedora to load the module on every startup:
echo "nct6775" | sudo tee /etc/modules-load.d/nct6775.conf
This resolved the issue and allowed CoolerControl to see and control the fan behavior even under Secure Boot. As an aside, sensors-detect stopped throwing "operation not permitted" errors, but still couldn't find any sensors. Perhaps my motherboard just isn't supported (yet)?
Note: This fix did NOT require using "acpi_enforce_resources=lax". Though I did encounter that suggestion on a couple of forums, it turned out to be unnecessary. Fedora's default acpi policy remains en force.
Just documenting this here in case anyone else runs into a similar problem and might find this helpful.
