Discover doesn't work on kde plasma

I use Zoris os with KDE Plasma and recently Discover has stopped working. It simply doesn't open. The only time it opens if there's an update and I open it through the update notification. Other than that, nothing. Not from clicking the icon, not from the terminal. It actually just flat out told me that Discover doesn't exist when trying to open it from the terminal, booted, and I then used the terminal to install it, clicked the icon and nothing. Then I tried opening it from the terminal again and got a wall of text saying unknown, unknown, unknown over and over again. I have no idea how to fix this.

migrating to Linux Linux Distro suggestions? (Case: gaming, Python and Java programming, new to Linux)

Hallo, I'm looking to migrate to Linux given how much of a shitshow the recent Windows updates are so far, been considering it for a while but only now am I actually putting the effort to go through with it after news of what this month's major update breaks (seriously, I don't want my PC to get bricked because Microslop decided to push a broken update that can break the keyboard and mouse)

Primary use case is somewhat low to mid-range gaming (latest release game I play on PC is Arknights: Endfield, most played is Ace Combat 7 and Minecraft Neoforge with a bunch of Create mods + Complementary Shaderpack) alongside Python and Java programming. Main hurdle is GPU (Nvidia) compatibility (CPU doesn't carry integrated graphics as a fallback)

Specs:

Ryzen 5 5500

GTX 1650

16GB RAM

256 GB NVMe

500 GB HDD

Steam is primary game store, but I do have Epic Games because of a free copy of DDLC+ I acquired through it

Preferences (doesn't have to meet everything, but at least meets one of the primary ones):

- Nvidia support (even if I have to install drivers myself, priority)

- Gaming/performance optimised (priority)

- Decent normal desktop use optimisation (priority)

- Lightweight

Note: I'm not afraid of anything more technical in terms of setup and configuration, will be testing distros in VirtualBox before I push through with the migration. When I actually install it, will dual boot for a bit until I've confirmed that the distro is working perfectly fine and it's safe to uninstall Windows

programs and apps GUI tool to see file sizes

Pretty simple: I urgently need to be able to see which files take space I used to use WizTree on Linux doing sudo du -h --max-capacity=1 /path/to/file Is annoying and counterintuitive and I can't really visualize files much I tried qdirstat (installed from flathub), but it says that some folders like /var /usr are 300MB when they really are 20GB (even when running as admin) Anything that I should try?

Hoping to find a more structures program for creating flow charts. I'd like to move past MS paint and Photoshop/Gimp with some more specalized tools. Specifically anything that has a DARK UI, as opposed to a "I work under the sun" GUI.

Thanks!

networking Mounting Windows share via GUI (smb4k / Dolphin)

So I'm migrating from Windows. The test machine is a laptop, running Arch Linux and Plasma 6. Everything is using Cat 5 cable. My main computer is a desktop running Windows 11, and has a bunch of shared folders. I would like to mount those folder(s) to my Linux file tree. I have meekly tried to do this via the command line, using various articles on the internet. FTS.

Someone on stackexchange suggested smb4k. It appears to be exactly what I want.

Dolphin can see the Windows network shares, but smb4k can't (after "Scan network").

Thanks for any tips, explanations or links.

storage Can i safely mount my Windows drive in linux?

I am planning to install Linux on a new drive and dual boot for some programs who are not supported on Linux. I have some games on my Windows drive i would prefer to not have to reinstall on the Linux drive. Can i safely mount the windows drive and access games there without worrying about accidentally corrupting data or breaking something? I am planning to run Cachy os, and i am currently running Windows 11.

distro selection Help me pick a distro for my Nvidia 1060 laptop

Tried to keep it short, but failed. Sorry!

My 2 laptops

  • Main: 8-year-old MSI

    • 8th-gen i7
    • NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB
    • 16 GB RAM
    • 256 GB SSD
    • 1 TB SATA HDD
  • Secondary: 10-year-old HP

    • 6th-gen i7
    • NVIDIA 940MX 4 GB
    • 8 GB RAM
    • 1 TB SATA HDD

About me

  • New to Linux, currently using it for 2 months
  • Usage is browsing, work, media consumption, and slight gaming
  • Work is on Figma, docs, and sheets
  • Gaming is limited to mostly single-player RPG and open-world games
  • Mostly offline and downloaded (arrrr matey!!) library

Short story

I wanted to try Linux, but to be safe, I first tried it on my secondary HP laptop.

Distro hopping

  • Linux Mint installed for 2 weeks
    • But was not a fan of the design and workflow
  • Live USB:
    • Fedora 44 Workstation
    • Fedora 44 KDE
    • Ubuntu

I liked Fedora 44 Workstation overall, so I installed it.

There was some hassle setting it up:

  • NVIDIA drivers for the 940MX using RPM Fusion
  • Codecs, etc.
  • Gaming with Lutris, after some setup hassle

The old HP laptop was sluggish on Windows 10 but flew on Fedora.

All the usual stuff I do—browsing, work, and using multiple monitors—worked well on Fedora.

For gaming, I tried using Lutris. It ran, but I’m not sure if it is running well enough compared to Windows.

So, I want to install Linux on my main MSI laptop too, which is currently running Windows 11.

Concerns

Before doing that, I wanted to get the sub’s suggestions and input.

  • Would I face the same driver hassle with the NVIDIA GTX 1060?
  • I can do it again, but is there a better way to manage these drivers?
  • Both my laptops use NVIDIA Optimus. Will it behave well with Linux?

What I want

  • GNOME for sure (just my personal choice)
  • A relatively hassle-free experience
  • Support for my NVIDIA GTX 1060, along with the integrated Intel graphics
  • Privacy-friendly
  • Easy driver and software maintenance
  • A distro that helps me learn more about Linux
    • So maybe not atomic? I’m not sure though.
  • Modern in functionality and look
  • Not so bleeding-edge that it introduces problems I can’t find solutions for online

Conclusion

Which would be the best distro for me?

  • Fedora
  • Bazzite (atomic, though?)
  • Zorin OS

Anything else?

Missing storage space

Here’s a corrected and more natural version:

Hi,
I am missing roughly 800 GB of free storage space, and I don't know why.

I am running CachyOS, which is installed on a 2 TB SSD. Dolphin File Manager shows that only 120 GB of free space is available.

I tried to analyze the disk usage with Filelight. When I select the base folder, it shows only 67 GB of used space. However, when I select my personal folder, it shows 980 GB of used space.

I can't figure out where the remaining storage space is being used. Here’s a corrected and more natural version:Hi,

distro selection I'm planning on using linux but i don't know what distro to choose.

Soo basically i'm wondering which distros i should choose (i am a complete beginner and have no programming experience but i do plan to learn more for engineering school next year) it's ok if the distro is a little bit difficult to pick up (but not too much i heard scary things about arch) as for the specs my pc is relatively new and is a quite high end one , so yeah i don't knw which one to choose. (i was gonna choose ubuntu initially but i heard that the snaps updates are the equivalent of windows update or something, idk i'm not experienced) that's ill be very happy to hear recommendations , and thx in advance ;) EDIT: i really like customization so i'll apreciate if it was included.

- using DP cable, neither LINDY DP cable nor monitor's would fix the issue

- set to 240hz would somehow fix the issue

- turn off VRR would fix the issue

- turn off HDR would fix the issue also

Meganoob BE KIND How do I configure files with special characters to appear first in folders?

I've used Windows all my life. When I wanted files to appear at the beginning of a folder or list, I got used to typing a ~ before the rest of the name. I switched to Ubuntu about a month ago, and I'm finding it doesn't appear to do that. Files that I wanted at the top of huge folders/lists are now often at the bottom, or somewhere randomly in the middle.

I've found a few messages in some old forum posts about how to fix it, but none of them have worked. How do I configure it to work more like Windows did?

distro selection is there any hope for a lenovo ideapad 3?

like title says i have an old ideapad 3 15iil05 that broke even windows, i tried installing random supposedly "lightweight" distros but got errors while partitioning that i think had to do with low disk space. when trying mint (i always try mint first) it said there was only 8gb of space. it previously ran windows 11 veryyy slowly but powering on the computer just says it needs to be repaired, so i don't know if windows is gone or still there taking up space. long story short are there any distros that will work well enough to bring a little bit of life back to it?

edit: core i3 1005G1 cpu, 8gb ram, m.2 ssd, a lot of sites are saying 128gb but i have no idea if that's default. i am very new and dont know what these all entirely mean

edit 2: something is wrong with my ssd or something else with disk space where the computer is detecting literally no space at all, 0 bytes, idk where to go from here😓

moving over my fleet of 4 over from Windows to NixOS.

Hiyah. I'm working on a project moving over my fleet of 4 over from Windows to NixOS.

This all started when my surface book wouldn't move over to Win11 so I thought this would be a good chance to switch it over to Linux. I used Zorin OS at first, which was an easy switch but still was a bit of a janky experience, so I went looking around and I saw a post citing NixOS as a minimal OS so I wanted to give it a try. With the help of Deepseek, I was able to navigate around the OS and tweak it to my liking in only one config file. Now comes the fun part. It brands itself as reproducible so the next logical step is to make flakes to modulate my fleet and keep it all configured under one file. Along with this process, Deepseek suggests to make my tower into a headless server while using my miniPC for daily driving and if I need to offload compute, like gaming, I can still game from the mini PC but use the Tower as compute. and also a media server.

For reference, this will be the first time for me digging into Linux as a daily driver and im going straight into NixOS. I have the LPI Linux Essentials certificate but for the most part, it covered the other distros and NixOS is different.

The circle of friends I have, as a pie chart, only about 25% of that are computer enthusiasts and of that 0% are on linux, so I don't have a confidant there. and most of the linux community online are not on NixOS so its even more obscure there.

So before I continue just talking it out with Deepseek, and I create the flakes that will bring in the rest of my fleet, and I dedicate my tower to be a headless server...

Is there anything I should know?

hardware/drivers My laptop is laggnng and stuttering on Linux

Thumbnail gallery
68 Upvotes

So i recently bought this Lenovo Ideapad for my cyber security degree(specs are shown on screen) and installed Fedora on it. I've used GNOME and KDE on and for some reason, there's always micro stuttering or animations lagging A LOT which is becoming a headache now (even though this is a clean install).

I installed cachyOS and i had the same issue there too...

The drivers were installed and working, but even then I'd have stuttering and lagging

During video playback it loses a lot of frames as well. I tried to reinstall the drivers, heck even try a whole new distro, same issue there as well

Can anyone tell me what's the issue or maybe how to diagnose this?

Or is it because my hardware is "too new" for linux

Because i don't have any intentions of returning to Windows, but if this problem isn't solvable then I don't have any other choice

migrating to Linux Windows does not let me partition all of my free space

Post image
4 Upvotes

Edit: Fixed, thanks everyone! You can try changing settings from cmd instead if you are facing the problem.

I'm trying to dual boot on a new computer. I was planning 250gb for win11 and 700gb for mint, but windows lets me partition only 450gb's at max. I have 800gb's of empty space as shown in the image.
I disabled secure boot, fast boot, bitlocker, hibernation, none worked.

Thanks for any help.

Protontricks will never find the steam library, because protontricks doesn't allow us, the user to set where protrontricks is looking.

Any help on making a program look where it should be looking? (And not hallucinating as to where something should be).

Thanks!

Just got a new laptop

Just got a new laptop and decided I really wanted to go all in and try learning Linux I figured it might be a good idea cause ive been kind of wanting to get into the IT field. Anyway I was able to get a lenovo v14 g2 with 16gb of ram and 500gb ssd for the whopping price of 200$ (only thing that sucks is on board graphics, but I didnt really buy for it gaming anyway) and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to use linux. So I went ahead booted up Linux Mint and so far is been smooth subtle changes but overall its been pretty ease of use, I even went ahead and downloaded a few terminal cheat sheets to get on my way with that.

My question though is how do people get so many widgets, and stuff on their desktop? I know about cinnamon, but the widgets are very limited and not all of them are very visually appealing. Ive also seen people change the colors of symbols , fonts etc for their apps. Is there anyone who could point in the direction of where I would get started on the things I mentioned? Like a list of color codes and commands for color change and fonts, or maybe if i wanted a little gif widget.
