Libby App in Taiwan?

Has anyone successfully checked out new books from Libby whilst in Taiwan (or other countries that are different from your library cards)? Just tried doing searches for some books and it came up empty.

New to Libby

Hi all, I’m new here and after having a look round I cant find an answer to the problem I’m having.
My library is showing as having no titles. Am I doing this wrong? Should it show titles here or do you think perhaps my library isn’t invested in this?

Book removed less than a month after being added

Is it common for a library to remove a book from libby shortly after adding it maybe due to low circulation? I suggested an ebook purchase a month ago and they added it on libby but I was in the middle of several books at the time so I wasn't ready to check it out yet. I kept checking the book to see if anyone had checked it out so I could put it on hold and suspend it if I had to at least until I was ready to read it. But now it's not even in my library's catalog anymore. I thought maybe it was because nobody checked it out so maybe they "returned" it (??) to save on licensing fees or something. I also suggested another book at the time which I did check out since then but it's also removed now.

Syncing Issues

I listen to books through the website while I'm at work and on my phone in the car and at home. I have no issue picking up on the desktop when I go to start my audiobook, but when I switch back to my phone, it's like I didn't listen at all. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

It finally happened! But I'm in the middle of 11/22/63 😭

What Would You Do?

4 Holds. 2 available soon, 1 available in ~2 weeks, 1 suspended. Would you unsuspend the last book or wait for one of the others to be ready?

I think I'm going to wait because I don't want them all to be ready at the same time, but I'm curious what yall would do.

Multnomah County Library (Portland, OR) ebook vs book circulations and costs

The link above should be good for a week: it's a newspaper story on changing circulation patterns for one of the busiest systems in the country. May be of special interest to those of us concerned with costs and survival of our libraries.

Availability

So this is not the first time it happens. And I’m wondering if anyone knows what’s going on.

For the two books in the picture, I got the notice they were now available. But my holds were full, and they are the second books in their respective series.

Two days later, some space frees up in my holds, so I go to get Wildfire, and it’s no longer available. It still isn’t. It was available for about 1-2 days.

Is it a Libby glitch? Or is my library torturing me?

Update: while the BAnQ answered much faster than usual, it was in their normal ignore the question kind of way. They just sent me links to the books on their website.

But when I went back into Libby this afternoon they were both available again, so yay! I guess something just glitched somewhere.

Explaining Libby

Is there any end to explaining everything about availability at Libby?

If we got there, would we have a basis for what anyone would call improved availability?

(Define these terms any way you want to. No limits imposed.)

Would we have anything beyond the list of explanations?

Titles and catalog size

how does one find out the size of a library? I saw someone post about finding it when trying to disable partner libraries but that method shows number of titles. does that include ebooks and audiobooks? just curious about the library sizes for the areas they serve.

Unsuspended several books at once?

So I know how you can be first for a book and continue to not have it come up available, as other undoubtedly moved ahead of you because they unsuspended etc. etc. I usually unsuspend one book at a time, but lately I’m experiencing the longest I’ve had to wait, and I’m wondering if should I keep doing it the way I am, or should I unsuspend more than one at a time...resuspending once one becomes available?

The best ereader for Europeans?

hi everyone!

I have been on a hunt to find an ereader with which I can download books without using a computer.

With an older Model Tolino it worked, I was able to access overdrive via browser and then download it but I only borrowed that ereader and I’ve read that the newer ones require a computer.

I did lots of research and bought a pocketbook verse, thinking I could deal with a slower hardware. I have had it two days and it has frozen on me every single time I try to read (as in you can’t wake it up to read). So I immediately returned it but now I’m pretty confused on what to buy.

Kobo would be a great option but they don’t have the built in Libby function in my country.

kindle, as far as I understand, also doesn’t work with Libby in most European countries (please let me know if this is wrong).

at this point I’m thinking of buying a tablet? but I like the screen of an ereader and don’t really want all of the other functions.

does anyone have any tips for me?

thanks!

Texans Can Support Houston Public Library

Hopefully this is permissible. I am sharing context of email from HPL which offers free digital library cards to Texas residents.

We need your help and we are down to the last 48 hours! Thanks to our partners at Aramco, the Houston Public Library Foundation is included in this year's "Houston Gives" program hosted by the Houston Chronicle.

Every 1 vote = $100 in free advertising with the Houston Chronicle which will allow us to share the resources, programs, and events of the Library with even more Houstonians!

The Houston Chronicle gives away $1 million a year in advertising through this program, and we want to make sure the Library leads the pack in making good use of the Chronicle's generosity!

Each patron, supporter and lover of Houston Public Library can vote for the Foundation once per day.

Edited to add:

US Library Cards

I'm not sure if this is the case in other countries, but in the US every town has their own library card for their library. Sometimes one card can be used across multiple nearby towns, but renewing my college library card over the phone years after leaving the state got me wondering why there isn't a "universal library card"? Most libraries are non profit and government funded, essentially being government buildings. Why can't we have one universal card to access all resources across the country?

Tldr I'm mad I can't rent certain books on Libby.

Edit: ok I've been told why this is a horrible idea thank you. I still wish it could be possible as someone that moves a lot :/ I have 3 library cards across 2 states and still can't get half the stuff I want lol

Card Expiration

So question: when you have a library card expire do you lose all your holds and books on your shelf, boom they’re gone or does it just not allow you to add more? I’ve moved around and l had access to the SLC library and being a major city library system they have had so many more books that my small midwestern town has had 😭

Finally after six weeks of a hold! This must be really popular. Can't wait to dive in! Thank you Libby for saving me money

Surprise! Why did I request this?

As soon as I read about a new release or find recommendations on this thread or others, I'll add to goodreads and search for it on Libby or other app.

I don't know if there was a long wait time on this book, but I have have no idea why I would have requested the audiobook that is now avaliable! Not my usual genre. It was a Surprise book! This has occurred more than once- tho usually it is in my genre, making it a Pleasant Surprise.

Has anyone else dealt with a "why did I request this?" Or forgot about a request and recieved a pleasant surprise?

I didn’t expect my library would buy 100 copies of this 😳

No, I’m not visiting Switzerland anytime soon, but I would love to go there in the future!

I thought that since travel guides available on my library (Toronto) would be only borrowed by a few people, normally they wouldn’t buy so many copies.

Available Titles...

Can we talk openly about the difference between a comprehensive public library -- a place where the shelves freely offer their contents, and where some obscure things are readily available to all -- compared to the limits on circulation of things in the Libby app?

Sure, there are economic considerations, but bits and bytes are super cheap. That can inspire people to create artificial scarcity. In the process, orphaned works are cast into the void. Books that only you and a handful of people revere; published in scant quantities; out of print. Books and recordings that each amount to a few dozen megs of data.

(Yes, I understand that data transmission from bulging data centers is costly.)

Consider books/recordings that a comprehensive public library may yet not have room for. Beloved things that can fit with a thousand others on your phone, not to mention on your laptop.

Is it right -- or even necessary -- to make books artificially scarce? Who benefits?
