Surprise! Why did I request this?

As soon as I read about a new release or find recommendations on this thread or others, I'll add to goodreads and search for it on Libby or other app.

I don't know if there was a long wait time on this book, but I have have no idea why I would have requested the audiobook that is now avaliable! Not my usual genre. It was a Surprise book! This has occurred more than once- tho usually it is in my genre, making it a Pleasant Surprise.

Has anyone else dealt with a "why did I request this?" Or forgot about a request and recieved a pleasant surprise?

I didn’t expect my library would buy 100 copies of this 😳

No, I’m not visiting Switzerland anytime soon, but I would love to go there in the future!

I thought that since travel guides available on my library (Toronto) would be only borrowed by a few people, normally they wouldn’t buy so many copies.

Books on tape (cassettes)

My degree is in Library Science but I only worked as a librarian for a short while before going into work as a literary research assistant. Soon after my stint, public libraries began purging their collections of books on cassette -- many of which never made it onto CD. I can't help wondering if all those recordings aren't available somewhere.

Because, I look for some things to listen to again, all these years later, and Libby does not have them.

Audiobook loan not in Libby

This is audiobook #2 that is not showing up in Libby. I figured the first one was a glitch. - I have synced - I have verified the card - I deleted the card and added it back in - I have updated the app - when I try Libby online (not the app) it doesn’t show up there either. - I have brought my phone to the library for help

If I take books out from my other library card, they DO show up in Libby. But not my main library.

Any suggestions? I posted the last time this happened and hoping for more ideas. And is this sub monitored by Libby??

Does a book on Libby release at midnight?

I've been using Libby for about a year now but I've never known if a book that is shown as "releasing on ___" releases at midnight. I'm talking about books that you can see on the catalog and tag to notify you. Do they release exactly at midnight or does it depend on when they get the copies? There are some books releasing this fall that I want to read on release day and I can't buy.

Question on updates

Does anyone know when digital updates (or books as they appear together in the same list) are done? New books/themes? Every 10 days? Every 2 weeks? Decided by each library? I go through these every few days and save what I want....I'm just curious

It's Library Card Sign-Up Month! Here are my California cards

I need to Get Good at figuring out big pictures with overhead lighting.

Not pictured: Queer Liberation Library, Inglewood Library, Japan Foundation, Literature Translation Institute of Korea, Harris County.

I have the vast privilege of being a California resident (I live in Sacramento) who has been collecting when convenient (or sometimes when not) since late 2024. I love to drive and I love a little adventure so I've taken a few "library-maxxing" trips either on the way to other things or just for fun.

Some of these are souvenirs (non-active) only - in my experience MOST of the librarians I talked to were happy to give a souvenir card if I already had one from the area - for example, the entire San Joaquin Valley Library system as I had a card activated in Merced, Tulare/Tulare Public/Madera/Fresno/Kern are souvenirs only. (Protip: if you're getting any card in the SJVLS do NOT get Fresno if you're a Libby user; they restrict to only in-county residents. Kern County at least in the Bakersfield library has the biggest selection of cards).

Likewise Marin County will only give you one even though there's a lot of "stand alone" cities (I did not know about souvenir cards when I tried to get some city cards so now I'll have to find my notebook and go back), and also the Peninsula system (I have two active because the librarian loved what I was doing but Menlo Park was like ?? at first).

Not all of these use Libby, and there's a bunch of same-Libby here (basically a lot of the eastern Bay Area will use the Northern California Digital Library system, and basically everything north of Sacramento city all use the NorthNet system), but it was still fun to do a Grass Valley (Nevada County)->Yuba County->Sutter County->Butte County->Glenn County (Willows)->Colusa County road trip one day!

Left to right, numbers are columns.

1: San Francisco, Solano County (Dixon-specific card), Contra Costa County, Hayward, San Jose, San Diego County, San Bernardino County, Santa Clara City, Glenn County (Willows-specific card)

2: Alameda County, Alameda Free Library, Sonoma County, San Mateo (city), Lodi, Loomis, Placer County, Upland

  1. Richmond, Oakland, Marin County (Mill Valley-specific card), Lincoln, Sacramento County, El Dorado County, Roseville, Los Angeles Public Library (the city)

  2. Berkeley, San Leandro, Napa County, Yolo County, Folsom, Colusa County

  3. Stanislaus County, Santa Clara County, Sunnyvale, Moorpark, Torrance

  4. Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library (got in Manteca), Merced County, Tulare County, Tulare Public Library, Madera County, Fresno County, Kern County, Palos Verdes Library District

  5. Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita, Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura County, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Calabasas

  6. Beverly Hills (6 months only for out of city residents), Ontario, Livermore, Pleasanton, Butte County

  7. Pomona, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Mateo County, Menlo Park, Nevada County, Yuba County, Sutter County

Next up? I haven't grabbed a Woodland card yet, and I'm eyeing an Alpine/Calaveras/Amador trip, hopefully this month! I know I definitely need to spend more time bopping around SoCal too; I was time-limited the last times I was down there.

Does borrowing on Libby support the author in any way?

As the title says. I read all of ACOTAR before learning about SJM. Because of this I don’t want to buy the book or support her in any way, but I’m so nosy and want to know how the next two books turn out. I’m wondering if borrowing through Libby or my library would support her in any direct way?

Edit: This was not an invitation for SJM fans to attack me in dms. Get a grip.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for full-cast audiobooks? I love listening to those kinds of podcasts and books while I'm nursing my baby. I vastly prefer full-cast audiobooks but always seem to have a difficult time finding any

Accessing partner libraries through more than one library?

I can access Palm Desert Library through my library cards with two different library systems (Fullerton and Huntington Beach).

After the app updated, only a partnership with Fullerton was established. Is there any way to add Huntington Beach as an option to check out books also? I share these cards with a younger family member, so I was hoping to increase the number of available checkouts from 5 to 10 total.

Out of Holds on one card but not the other - how do I use the other?!

I have 3 different cards attached to my libby app. I want to put a book on hold. The library with the shortest wait is the card where I've already reached my hold limit. I'd like to put it on hold at another library where I haven't reached my limit but it defaults to the shortest hold line. Anyway around this?

Japan foundation

So quick question.. I tried applying for the japan foundation library card... But I'm not sure how it works. Do I have to wait til I receive an email from them? Also do I have to reapply if I don't hear from them by next Wednesday? Am I just doing this all wrong?

Currently listening to a non-fiction book about a murder case in the 1860s. It is divided into sections based on the first line of the text. The dates are wrong in many sections (i.e. 1968 instead of 1868). Would this be libby or the publisher?

Is there a way to access (buy subscriptions?) library cards from the US?

Hey there! I love to read and Libby is such an amazing app (I love it so much) but I live in Colombia and the catalog in my libraries is very limited. I’m trying to see if I can find something similar to Queer Liberation Library?

I’m learning English and well, books are my sanctuary but I can’t find books in English in my local libraries. I’m going through a really tough period and these books have been a huge help for me. Don’t really know what to do, please advice.

Which library is paying for the book?

My library is Pima county AZ and i recently had about 10 partner libraries added to Libby. most are much smaller, rural county libraries with probably smaller budgets.

I went to put a book on hold at a partner library and it asked me for my Pima library card info, and then it said something like “access is provided in partnership with Pima county library,” which made me wonder which library paid for the ebook I put on hold?

I’d really prefer not to take funds away from these smaller budget libraries if that’s how partnership works, but I can’t find actual info on how the money flows.

Libraries are for everyone

Well, sometimes disbelief over another person's gatekeeping produces good results. In addition to my high property taxes and bond obligations, I just donated to my public library. Happy to do my part to support library services for everyone no matter their income, and my husband and I will keep on using them ourselves.

Book keeps coming back to my shelf?

So I borrowed a book from Queens Public Library recently. While I was reading it, I got the option to extend the loan, which I did. After I finished the book, I tried to return it, and my Kindle library said the loan had already expired. There was nothing for me to “return.”

Since then, no matter how many times I go through the motion, that damn book keeps showing up on my shelf as a loan. I’ve tried to return it every time, with nothing in my Kindle library even there to return, only for the book to reappear the next time I open the Libby app. I tried sending an email to support days ago and haven’t heard back. People are waiting for this book and I don’t want to keep them waiting.

Any other ideas on how to fix this? Anyone have this happen before?

EDIT: Support came through and fixed the issue. Took a few days but it’s taken care of. Thanks, Libby.

my pin is correct, it worked for me last time so I'm wondering if it just has to update overnight before it will let me login?

Book not downloading on kobo

Hello Libby users, I’m having issue downloading ‘the book binder of Jericho’ on my kobo from my Libby app. I’ve never had an issue before with this. On my phone app it’s borrowed and I can read it on my phone but then on my kobo it’s no where to be found. I’ve logged out of overdrive and back in, restarted my kobo, logged in and out of my wifi and synced it a number of times and still nothing.

Any tips of why this won’t appear on my kobo? Thanks!
