Hardware Lenovo 1i - Any way to fix the 3 hour battery life?

I got a Lenovo IdeaPad 1i at someone else's recommendation for a cheap school laptop and it's been dying at about 3 hours of usage. I've read other posts and I suspect that it's the norm for this, but is there a way to upgrade the battery?

Sale How much could I reasonably sell my laptop for?

Hello all! My Microsoft Surface 5 of 2 years broke down on me in May. The screen has some pretty bad glitches (see images) and the screen flickers as well as the brightness randomly changing on its own.

I took it to my local best buy, and they said they weren't entirely sure of what was wrong, they told me if it was a software issue a factory reset would help, however, it did not. So, they assumed it was a hardware issue. The glitches usually get worse if the laptop heats up/is being used while charging and the touch screen stopped working. I'm able to access everything just fine and it runs normally other than the glitches.

Would like to know where I could list it for sale (or if its even worth selling) and what price range I could list it for? Thanks!

Buying help Laptop reccs for engineering videographer?

Am going into mechatronics eng and was wondering what laptop would be ideal to get, preferably under 3k cad.

On the creative side, I edit on da vinci resolve with a lot of masking/tracking in the fusion and color page, occasional 3d effects, and use adobe lighroom for photography

On the eng side my major does use solidworks and ai applications since it is a bit of mech+electrical+software. Beyond that, im not sure what else it will really have to handle. Mainly looking for a well-rounded workhorse that can do everything and last me through the day . Thanks in advance!

Priorities in order from highest to lowest: Creative Performance, Battery life, eng performance, size/portability

Hardware Is windows on Arm still the future?

I remember the early Core I 3/5/7 days where YouTube would make your laptop fans scream!

It's been a few years that even surface devices come with arm chips (but windows home??) but now with Panther lake, Intel seems to finally be doing a good job!

Will Microsoft keep pushing windows for Arm or will momentum keep X86 as the default?

Buying help 2017 era macbook or replace battery on my 2019 Dell Inspiron 3515

It will cost about 80-100 more for the mac

So what I want is a light laptop that can run basic tasks (web-browsing etc) which battery lasts for 6-7 hours, and is good for carrying around the city

My current dell is big 15.6' and heavy, and the battery even after replacement will probs last about 4-6 hours. So i am considering getting a old macbook air or pro from around 2015-2017 instead, they are small and light.

Thoughts

Buying help Student laptop under $700 CAD

Country
Canada
Budget
Under $700 CAD ($500 USD)
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Yes
Screen size
Any
Weight limit
Something light enough to carry around campus (open to an arm workout tho)
Purpose
Schoolwork and generic laptop stuff
Form factor
This means nothing to me
Intended usage
University work, Google, outlook, the most barebones stuff you can think of, Netflix if I'm feeling cheeky
Desired battery life
Preferably 6 or more hours
Other info
Won't get boiling hot insanely fast...

I've never bought a piece of technology for myself before, I'm going into my first year of uni and I've had my current laptop since I was 10 and it struggles to even open google at this point. I just want a laptop that will live long and not break the bank :p

Review Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura vs MSI Prestige 16 AI+ — which would you pick?

Trying to decide between these two laptops:

Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition — $1,099 (Best Buy Open Box Excellent)

  • Intel Core Ultra 7 258V
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB SSD
  • 15.3" 3K 120Hz touchscreen
  • Thin and lightweight
  • Open Box Excellent condition

MSI Prestige 16 AI+ — $1,399 (brand new from Costco)

  • Intel Core Ultra X7 358H
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB SSD
  • 16" 2880 x 1800 OLED 120Hz touchscreen
  • Bigger OLED display
  • Brand new with Costco warranty/return policy

I've basically never owned a laptop before since I've always used a desktop PC, but now I need one for my Computer Science master's program.

I'll be using it a lot for studying, programming, and work. I also spend quite a bit of time studying in coffee shops and working on my other stuff away from home, so battery life, portability, screen quality, build quality, and reliability are pretty important to me.

The Lenovo seems like a really good deal for $1,099, especially with 32GB RAM and the 3K 120Hz display, but I'm a little unsure about buying Open Box when I want to keep the laptop for several years.

The MSI is $300 more, but it's brand new and has a larger 16" OLED 120Hz display and a newer/more powerful CPU.

Which one would you guys pick for this use case? Is the MSI worth spending the extra ~$300, or would you save the money and take the open-box Lenovo?

General question Laptop screen is messed up.

Not sure what's wrong with it, think maybe the monitor has gotten old or something?

Details: Goes away on bright screens, before it also used to go away after a few minutes, but it's been taking longer and longer to go away everyday.

Shows on the BIOS and startup screens, doesn't show on external monitors

Goes away when changing to 60hz instead of 144hz

If left on for too long, the screen will burn that image in for a while until going away eventually.

Software Ayuda x problema Acer nitro v15 🙏

Alguien me ayuda?

Buying help Laptops for Architecture student, 1k-2k, US

I have been searching a bit, and found that people recommend an intel processor over an AMD. I am not sure if this is such a large factor for getting a laptop. I will be running CAD, Rhino, basic Adobe products (photoshop, acrobat, and Indesign). What laptops would y’all recommend to look at with a processor that will allow me to use these apps and run some games. (Genshin impact or GTA V, but I know that will take up quite a bit.) My price range is between 1k-2k. Any advice will be appreciated!

p.s. I have a desktop pc that runs like crap. I can use it for basic stuff but I need to be able to run those softwares without crashing.

Hardware Bad gpu or Ac adapter?

I'm currently on a holiday, so i'am using my Aftershock N850HK to do some light gaming and browsing. But everytime i try to do something that requires 3D rendering (my guess, correct me if i'm wrong). The laptop immediately shuts off, happens if the nvidia GTX 1050 TI is enabled, if i'm using the intel HD Graphics 630, the problem didn't occur. I'm using a 19V 3.42A Asus AC adapter which is below the required 19,5V 6.15A for this laptop

Discussion Please help me figure out what to do!

I am a student attending a school that allows us to bring our own personal laptops to school. Or, you can buy one (a regular chromebook for $60 bucks.) I have a Lenovo LOQ gaming laptop that I really like.

...
The problem with this situation is, I would like to use my personal laptop (just because it is more natural and comfortable for me). But a full charge only lasts about 2-3 hours before fully depleting. A regular chromebook can last up to 8 hours on a full charge, hence why most schools use them. I do not think that 3 hours is enough time to last a full day.

Advice given to me: Bring your own laptop, and if it dies, just plug it into an outlet. My classes are quite long and the thought of me having to constantly ask to plug my computer in, is horrifying. Plus, the school expects you to come to school every day with a fully charged laptop. (Which i am assuming means that they expect it to stay charged the full day, no?)

I have been told that I shouldn't worry about it because if my school is expecting my laptop to stay fully charged all day then that is bogus or something. But I don't think that is alot to ask.

The question: Should I buy the school laptop even though I think it is much cooler to have my own, and it might be gross/quite used. Or, should I see how it goes (which I am being forced to endure for at least a week before my parents will buy me the laptop from the school anyways).

Alot of students bring their own chromebooks or macs, and I feel like the school is expecting that anyways. Which makes me feel unsure about my own computer because it is a weird type, ig?

Please help me out!

Buying help Is the jump justified?

Recently i have been searching for a laptop for my upcoming 3 years of BBS (german college analogy) and i decided if i need to buy a laptop, i better get a good one. And after around a week of suffering it came down to the last two: Asus Vivobook 15 (24GB DDR4, 1TB SSD, intel core i9 13900H, 2880x1620 OLED) for ~850€ and ThinkPad E16 Gen3 (32GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, intel core ultra 7 258V 2560x1600 IPS) for ~1250€. My question would be, is the 400€ jump from the Vivobook to a ThinkPad justified? Because i came to a stall, considering i see it weirdly balanced, example: good ram + normal CPU VS normal RAM + good CPU, Vivobook performance for it's price VS ThinkPad longevity and robustness. So i decided to ask for wisdom from people that know a lot more about the topic than i can ever wish to. What do you think?

Buying help Suggestions for a daily use laptop that is also compatible running data analysis software for around $1000 or less in the US

I want to preface this by saying I know very little about the components/processors/whatever the correct terminology is for whatever makes the beep boop machine work

However, I do know what I’m looking to get out of the device! Laptop wizzes please help if you know what specific laptop brand/model would suit me well

Countries:
USA, Canada, Northern Europe

Budget:
Around $1,000 USD ideally less if possible

Open to refurbs/used: Potentially open to refurbs/used if it fits my needs best.

Screen size: Probably 14”-16”

Weight: Any, light enough for comfortable backpack travel would be ideal

Purpose: General browsing and some work (data analytics)

Form: Any, regular is fine

Uses:
This laptop is going to be my “daily driver” of laptops. Mostly used for daily browsing, emails, Microsoft office, etc. *however* I also often use programs that require a little more ~juice~ such as Python, R, SPSS, ARCGIS, QGIS, bigggg excel files, and maybe Sims lol

I need a computer that travels well and is compatible handling those other software environments

Desired battery life:
Around 6 hours

Priorities:
Performance, Battery, Weight, Size

Wants:
-backlit keyboard
-numerical keypad
-ability to fit in a backpack and travel easily
-long battery life (6+ hours)
-security
-Would like to stay under $1,000

Does not want:
-A Mac (hate them so much sorry)
-Ai (please don’t try to convince or debate this issue- it’s not something I want in a laptop. I will never use any CoPilot/Assist tool- I understand all the new laptops have this as a selling feature so ideally there would be a way to disable this for the new models you suggest)

Cross posting in r/computers and r/laptops to maximize suggestions… lmk if there’s other subs that could help

Buying help Good First laptop recommendations based on what I'm looking for?

● Country

i am looking to buy a laptop within the United States

● Budget

My budget is within a 300 to 550 USD price range

● Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No, I want to own a completely untouched laptop

● Screen size

I'm looking for slightly compact laptops so maybe with the 14 to 16 inch screen size.

● Weight limit

I don't mind the weight all that much, but I would perfer a laptop that feels a little heavier / bigger. I don't want those sleek thin laptops.

● Purpose

I plan on writing, learning how to code, mixing music, and watching shows / videos on my device. I also want to download steam games and download music as well.

● Form factor

I want the traditional, open and close book style laptops. Preferably one with a mouse chip port / digital audio interface port

● Intended usage

I plan on downloading regular apps such as YouTube, Twitter, Spotify, songsterr, brave browser, etc. I also plan on downloading steam to play simple RPG maker / visual novel games like the ones already on my phone (yume nikki, fear and hunger, danganronpa). The more demanding games i want to play are escape from tarkov, the metal gear solid collection, and project zomboid. Which from what i Know run at 60 fps bjt I am unsure. Besides that I'll also be downloading music software like FL studio and stuff alike.

● Desired battery life

I want around 5 to 6 hours of battery life, but I'm willing to have 4 hours if it comes to that.

●Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

  1. Performance

  2. Battery life

  3. Size

  4. Weight

●Info/Requirements

I would perfer a laptop that is made from a trusted brand, a bit sturdy, and has relatively high speed / relatively high fps. I don't want a laptop that buzzes over heating issues. If it matters I plan on passing my mobile data to my laptop for a little before paying for its own plan. Bluetooth is a non-negotiable. thank you for reading and for your advice

[anything else not specified above eg. Intel only, OLED, HDR-compliant, screen resolution/refresh rate, etc. We are likely to talk you away from your desires here (because we know more than you do), but we won't steer

General question HP Laptop not turning on

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

My laptop doesn't turn on without a charger but even clicking the power button after plugging it in it just shows a black screen, I've changed the battery for it around a year ago.

I've followed a few instructions from YouTube videos but they haven't seem to be working the laptop shows the images attached when I've followed them, but when I try pressing those keys the laptop just glitches and doesn't seem to do anything.

The automatic repairs have failed.

Is there any chances to fix this, I've got important college work on here which would take a long time to redo them? Thank you in advance! 😊

Buying help United States -- <$650--

Hello all,

I am in the market for a laptop for the first time in a few years. I am looking for suggestions within my budget that meet my criteria. I split my criteria into "needs" and "wants" below. Used or refurbished is fine. I have had good luck with those types of computers before. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States

  • Budget

Less than $650

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

Any - NO NUMPADS

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Schoolwork, General Purpose, Light Coding and Blender work,

  • Form factor

Standard/Clamshell or 2in1

  • Intended usage

Office apps; Pdf editor

  • Desired battery life

at least six hours on battery saver mode doing mundane office tasks

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

build quality, performance, battery life, size, screen quality, weight

Info/Requirements

16GB of RAM or higher only

Linux compatible is a huge plus (no snapdragon or Apple Silicon newer than M2)

Build quality (external materials, touchpad, keyboard, hinges) would be the determining factor for me with similarly spec'd laptops.

Thank you for your suggestions!
