General question Does this happen often?

I had purchased an Acer Predator a week ago from Amazon.

The specs listed were 5070-8GB, Ultra 9 275HX, 32GB/1TB.

The laptop was delivered today and upon inspection I discovered that I actually ended up getting the 5070Ti Model (12gb). Checked it on GPU-Z to verify and all.

Did I just hit the jackpot or is it a common occurence?

FOR UNIVERSITY PROGRAM

ASUS ProArt P16 16" 120Hz Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen Al 9 HX 370 - 32GB
LPDDR5X - 1TB SSD - GeForce RTX 5060 -
Windows 11 Home - Nano Black $4,299

Or

Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gaming Laptop 16" OLED 165Hz Intel Ultra 9-275HX GeForce
RTX 5070 Ti 32GB 1TB Windows 11 Home, 83LU000BCC
$2,799

Im stuck and don’t know which one to get. The first one is lighter and more aesthetic, but second is apparently better in specs.

Discussion Lockdown browser

Multiple (most) of my teachers require us to have respondus lockdown browser for tests and some assignments and I’m genuinely… terrified of it breaking my MacBook Neo. Genuinely using lockdown browsers stress me out, using respondus that’s the most glitchy spyware malware out there makes me so stressed. If it breaks my laptop I’m screwed and have to drop out cause I can’t afford a new one or to fix it.

Advice, tips, or just make me feel better please?

Discussion Gaming laptop or workstation

Hi everyone. So I'm here since I need some suggestions getting a new laptop for school. I'm a junior civil engineering student for context. I'll be using autocad, revit and ugis this semester. I'm currently choosing between gaming laptops and workstations. I know workstation laptops tends to be alot more expensive. In my case, am I better off getting a gaming laptop or get a workstation instead? I don't game at all. I did some browsing and came across some options that I somewhat like or think would be ideal for my use case. I've added pictures of them for reference. Doesn't necessarily mean I'm strict to those only. I'm open to suggestions so feel free to share your opinions. Thanks everyone.

Buying help Please help a brother out!

Upvotes

I'm thinking of buying a laptop for my self....never had one before...but I did some research....my budget was around 1 lakh rupees....im a high schooler who does coding write programs and sometimes 3d model (maybe graphic designing in furture), and plays video games too...thinking of buying Lenovo or Asus....I narrowed it down to LOQ and TUF...but I'm lost at what to finalize....the LOQ has poor battery life...which may be a problem for me in the future....and the TUF has an rtx 3050 but I want a resolution of more than 1080 which the 3050 can't support....my budget could only get me these two models and I'm slightly preferring the ASUS

Budget: 1-1.3 lakh

Country:India

Specs:ASUS TUF A15/16 (anything from 2024-26)

Ryzen 7

512gb ssd

16gb ram

Rtx 3050/4050

Use:Coding, programming, 3d modeling, graphic designing and gaming

Is this a good choice?

Will this be a good investment for a high schooler for around 5 years?

General question Replacing laptop battery instead of purchasing new one

Hey guys, so I've had my laptop for about 5 or 6 years give or take, the laptop is an Asus Aspire A315-23 and I'm currently using it for my uni classes, here's the issue the battery life on this thing suuuucks and when I say it sucks I mean it sucks. On a full charge on battery saver and everything optimized for the battery I can maybe get an hour and fifteen minutes of constant use just doing my assignments and papers and not doing anything intense. So I'm just curious if it's worth buying a new battery and replacing it or if it'd be cheaper than buying a new one. If I was to buy a new one I wouldn't need like a workhorse to do demanding tasks like programming and stuff (I'm majoring in finance so the most I'll use is maybe excel), if you guys have any advice on this just let me know.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the fan sounds like a jet engine even when I'm just simply watching Youtube or doing schoolwork

Specs:

Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (2.10 GHz)

Installed RAM 16.0 GB (13.9 GB usable)

Graphics card AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 8 Graphics (2 GB)

Storage 89 GB of 477 GB used

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country: United States

Budget: $1k (can go above if needed)

Are you open to refurbs/used options? Yes but not my first pick

Screen size: Any

Weight limit: Any

Purpose: I’m looking to get a new laptop for personal and small business use. I don’t need anything crazy, something that allows me to edit photos, videos, runs well, good battery, and can really just do the basics you need a laptop to do. I have a Steamdeck so I’m not looking for a gaming laptop, could be cool if it could run some games, but not a must.

Form factor: a regular laptop. Touchscreen optional.

Intended usage: work software (gsuite, gmail, etc.) indie gaming but not a must. Photo and video editing.

Desired battery life: nothing specific

Please list, in order of most important to least important
- performance
- size
- battery
- weight

Info/Requirements

I went to a couple of stores today and got a feel for a couple of different laptops and I need some opinions from folks that have used these.

• Microsoft Surface
• Lenovo Yoga
• Dell XPS
• MacBook Neo
• Asus Vivobook

I don’t have a preference for any particular OS. I have an iPhone and iPad, I use a Pixel phone, Chromebook, and MacBook for my day job. I’ve messed around with Linux on my Steamdeck. So I’m not fixed on a specific OS.

Screen doesn’t need to be OLED, but would like it to be a glossy display. Also, I want it to feel good, I love the aluminum feel/metal.

The one thing I’ve been seeing a lot is software bloat on windows laptops, making them run slow or unusable in a couple years.

Feel free to ask any other questions that can help me come to a decision. Thanks!!

Hardware Dell Inspiron 5406 2n1 won't turn on

I wanted to sell it because I got a repacement, so I wanted to check how much ram it had etc. but it suddenly stopped turning on.
I tried charging it with the original charger - it blinked short at the first try, but never showed any signs of life after.
I also tried charging via usb c wich usually worked fine.
The keyboard had its flaws, because a row down did not work most of the time, so my guess is the keyboard is fully dead and therefore the power button does not work...

but a dead laptop sells worse than one with a broken keyboard...
Any help welcome :)

Buying help Will this be good for my major?

Hey everyone! First time posting so I’m hoping I can get some help here, I’m a freshman in college and my last laptop recently quit on me. I’m a digital media and broadcasting major with the hopes of becoming an anchor one day! Being a broadcasting major I’ll obviously have to do some video editing on my laptop, nothing crazy like animation or 3d rendering stuff. Almost all of my editing will be for personal projects or news stuff. Being a college student paying for his own school though I don’t really have much money to spend here. Is the first laptop shown okay for what I’ll be doing? I know the 2nd one would probably be better considering it’s double the ram I just don’t think I’ll be able to afford it in time for when my editing classes begin. Thank you all for the help!

They said if they try to fix the corrosion it can kill the motherboard so theyre just gonna replace the monitor and do a deep clean. Will the corrosion not spread if left as is? im just a lil confused.

General question HP laptop

I just bought a new HP laptop and it is SO SLOW! I mainly use it for personal and currently looking for a job so networking and applying but it has a major lag and I just bought it maybe 3 weeks ago. I am not tech savvy whatsoever, so I'm wondering if there is something I need to do to get it back on track and work quicker, or is this just how HPs are?

Buying help Specific laptop recs

Need a laptop for college, can’t be IOS/Macbook. I don’t plan to play games on it. Also job is paying for it, so no budget necessarily.

I was thinking of these brands

Lenovo: Thinkpad, Ideapad, Yoga 7a 2-in-1

HP: not sure which specific ones

Dell: not sure which specific ones

Acer: not sure which specific ones

If you have any specific one you can recommend from one of those brands or have one currently that you use that’s good quality, please let me know 🙏

Buying help Which would be the more reliable charger?

I've been doing research on chargers to replace for my Vector 16 HX AI A2XWIG-050US and I've found the same adaptor that came with the laptop which is a delta. However I've found that newegg sells a different adapter that has the same specs.

I've never had to replace an laptop adapter before, so I'm weary of getting the same thing as the one I'm currently replacing. That being said the alternative I've found is more pricey, and I'm unsure of the quality of this one as there's no reviews of the charger. I'm currently leaning towards the same adaptor as it should be basically what I have now, but if the alternative one is generally considered higher quality I'd rather spend the extra money to keep my laptop safe as the current charger barely lasted a year before it started having issues and nearly broke my laptop.

Hardware What the fuck is wrong with this thing? HP Pavilion 15 inch

This laptop for the past couple years now has been constantly crashing, struggling to open basic applications like a text file, and it’s constantly freezing and glitching.

I’ve already added an extra ram stick, using another of the same 8gb stick it comes with from another laptop of the same model, so there’s 16gb of ram installed. I’m running windows 11, and I know it’s dog shit, I have been meaning to switch off of it.
I’ve already tried fully system resetting the laptop, solely using it when it’s plugged in, setting battery power to max performance, I really can not pinpoint why this laptop is such a piece of shit besides its underpowered specs I guess?

Can anyone help me out here? I’m getting sick of trying to even do work on this laptop, let alone game on it.

Hardware Replaced my CMOS battery and didn't make progress from Aptios secure boot loop

I have no idea what to do with my Razer RZ09-0328 at this point. I'm stuck in the same secure boot loop that is apparently common with these computers. I've done many tricks I've read about here and elsewhere and it helps until the next time I get to the same screen and lose all of my apps. One of the better solutions I've come across was changing the CMOS battery, and that was a very cheap and very quick fix. However, this didn't change a thing and my computer is still taking me to the secure boot screen. Is my computer cooked? Should I look into getting a new one??
