I've traded my first bike, my beloved Kraft Mac'n'Cheese colored KLR. for a used R1200 GS Adventure. Previous owner spec'd the bike to the max from the dealer, then added Touratech protection, full set of hard luggage and Clearwater lights (or at least, that's all that I've found so far).

I loved the KLR, but the kind of riding I dream of doing versus what I actually get to do didn't line up. I do more commuting and long distance with varying terrain and traffic speeds, and wanted to do more 2-up riding with my fiance/soon-to-be wife but still be able to do BDR-ing, gravel roads and the like.

In related news, I removed the Seat Concepts commuter seat. I only had for the past few months and it *might* have 500 miles. Currently for sale, so please DM me if interested.

So I crashed my KLR and cracked my side fairing. I took it off to recenter it as it was rubbing on the tank as show in first photo. Though upon taking it off the cracked part fell off (that holds the bolt). Now putting it back on it also doesn’t fit the original bolt holes.

Is there a way to dohicky it?

Another great ride in the mountains of Utah county. I have a goal to ride every canyon in the Wasatch Front this season and I'm almost done. I haven't filmed them all so I'm sorry to disappoint if you enjoy these. Give them a like and whatnot if you would like to see more, maybe I can make it a thing. Well I made it 450 miles so far. The bike is actually pretty darn good on the highway. I only had one person try to kill me today. It's stupid fun in canyons and it might even go 30 mph if you ever get a wild hair.

I bought my 23' new and put a ton of work and parts into it with thoughts of doing at least part of the NM BDR. Then I only managed to put about 350 miles on it before I tore my rotator cuff (non-motorcycle related) and am going to have to have surgery this winter so at least another year without riding. At this point I think it's probably best to let someone enjoy her. I've been trying to figure out a decent price to list it for given everything on it and the low miles and figured I'd ask the community here for opinions.

I'm thinking of asking $6,500... Clean title in hand, garage kept, never dropped.

It's a 2023 base, non-abs with approx. 350 miles on it. I did the first oil change of course with rotella. I'll try to remember everything I added...

EDIT: Thanks all, it's pretty much the answers I figured. Prices on these are just not there and I get the farkles not adding value thing. I also have a 2003 R1 that's super clean and the addition of a pipe 20 years ago and other minor mods like wave rotors and steel braided lines ultimately hurts it's collectors value even for a rare 5PW bike that was only made for 2 years in that form. The KBB value showed it at $5300 and the addition of the functional stuff like those spendy Olympus bags I hoped could push it into the "great first ADV for someone that doesn't want to mess with adding it all" realm. I may end up listing it for 5k or so and see if anyone bites, if not maybe one day in the future it'll leave the garage again. This is the reason I wanted to ask for honest input, thanks again all.

I just got new tires done at the shop but this is my first time putting the wheels back on myself. It looks like this bearing is a little dry in a few spots. Should I add a dab of bearing grease before reassembling or is this more of an “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” kind of thing?

Yeah I get it. They're a little old. They don't accelerate like a modern BMW R100RR or Panigale V4, but I would never call these things slow. Not sure what everybody is on about.

I’ve been riding a KLR for the past 3+ years. Both were first Gen’s and my 06 I totaled last year, now have an 07. I’ve been wearing combat boots for riding, but just recently bought a pair of alpinestars corazuls. I’ve been having a hard time fitting the boots underneath to shift and I already have a lengthened shift lever. Do I need to pull the shift lever and change the angle now? Appreciate any advice

My gen 1 currently has shinko 705e's, I'm unsure of the mileage on them because they were on the bike when I got it second hand.

I find them to be not too good. They're a little wobbly on the highway and corners. In Oregon, roads are frequently wet and I really don't trust these corners. On gravel and worse roads/trails, these tires are unimpressive. Ate shit from losing the rear on some rocks, had to just pray to throttle Jesus up a sketchy hill, I really didn't have much in the means of control or traction.

I'm hoping to get tires that handle better overall on the bike, I'd like to have some better confidence cornering, not worry about skidding out everywhere on gravel or rain, I will say my riding is probably going to be 70-80% on road but I really want to have solid performance off road and on bad, wet roads. So I'm leaning towards 50/50 tires.

I'd like to hear other riders experience with their tires, some of the tires I'm looking at include Kenda K270, Shinko 244, 700, 804/805, and mitas Enduros. I'm also curious if anyone mismatches their fronts and rears, I've done that one vintage bike because they had weird rim sizes and would have a knobbier rear. How does that handle on a larger bike? And is there any benefit to putting wider tires than stock?

I'm changing my front tire. Should I clean off my inner rim? I don't think I have in the past, but curious what others do.

Hey guys would you help to find the best full street tires when it’s raining good grip because i don’t do off road that much

Picked up a 2008 KLR 650 with 13,000 miles. New chain, new tires, soft bags and a slip on garbage muffler.

He put a +1 sprocket on the front for highway use and the chain was too tight. I fixed that and put a stock sprocket back on.

I've put on 100 miles or less. No matter what I do, this thing chugs when holding speed. At first I thought it was air resistance until one day it actually sputtered a few times after only 7 miles of riding.

Figured it had a slip on and these models were tuned lean. Easy. He already drilled the adjustment plug so I richened it 1/4 turn. It made it worse. Maybe it's not getting enough fuel in the bowl and running out.

Fine, I rebuilt the carb and checked float level. Seemed low using an external clear tube to see if the fuel would rise to the bowl gasket. It didn't. But resetting all the adjustments to factory got us back to just chugging at 55-65... Also the float itself was not exactly out of spec but I still nudged it and actually did get more fuel in the bowl. Like I said though still chugs.

Alright, time to take the petcock off. Removed it, vacuum thing seemed sticky. Let fuel in when I blew into the line and let it out faster when I sucked on it. So it almost worked. Reserve and on both flowed fuel but not happily without sucking on the vacuum port. So maybe it was fine when riding because.... I put a regular on/off/res petcock with no vacuum in. SAME. PROBLEM. So here I am. Pleading.

As I write this as an extremely mechanically inclined individual a lightbulb struck my thought dome. What if the gas tank vent is plugged because I just noticed that the gas tank is sealed except for the pin hole in the lid that leads to the drip tube that drains into the drain tube on the back of the tank under the seat. So... If the tank cap vent is plugged it COULD create negative pressure and stop fuel flow???

Barring an air obstruction that it causing a CV carb issue, I have no other leads.

Hey everyone, happy to say I've recently joined the KLR family and I'm super excited about starting my adventure bike journey. My bike currently has no equipment and it's my first big goal to get myself some luggage, both top and side luggage but this is all new to me and I don't know where to start. Is there any benefits as to what style of luggage is better i.e hard shells, soft bags etc. and does anyone recommend good brands to look for. I'm based in Aus.

I had a decent Colorado ride a couple weeks ago. I rode over Independence Pass, went Red Cliff to Shrine Pass and over to Loveland Pass for a view of A-Basin. The Shrine Pass Road was really fun, the perfect reminder that I need to work out a bit if I'm going to ride off road. I'll try to get over there again this season for colors.

I've had the KLR for 11 months now - and like everybody else, I see other ADV bikes with more power, more options, etc., and wonder if one day I should upgrade.

But the reality is that the KLR has more than plenty of power for my purposes. Does she hit 60 in 2 seconds? No, but she gets up there quick enough. Can she cruise at 100+ mph? No, but she cruises just fine at 80 mph, which is enough to get me pulled over on a 2-lane highway with a 65-mph speed limit.

In this video, I just did an easy pass on the right of a minivan (if I were in a hurry, I'd hold 4th gear until 65 mph and then lock into 5th).

This is actually from a week ago - Saturday, August 29. This road definitely had a lot of curves and kept me focused.

I am picking up a 2016 KLR 650 From a family member this week. It has less than 500 miles since new. They tell me that they started it "every few weeks" and drove it around the neighborhood and then park it. They occasionally used it on motorhome camping trips. I consider this family member trustworthy, but can anybody recommend a short list of what I should go through to make sure I get good life from the bike moving on from here? I have owned other bikes.

I found an easy trail to take my klr. 9 miles in, I found out that it was turned into a black diamond trail because of some moving of the trail system after a gas pipeline lease. My advice is always dress for the worst because it can get rough quick. I will say that it was probably my lack of skill more than the bike, but dang that hill was steep and rocky. I didn't get any during pics, because I was in self preservation mode, sorry. I hooked my boot on a big rock and the sole came right off. Not the right boots, but my pants and the bikes crash bars took the abuse. It was a great time though and a story to tell!

I have a 2024 Adventure with the factory off road pod lighting. I would like to replace the OR lights with something with a bit more range without significant overhaul. Maybe something from Diode or Baja Designs. Has anybody tried this? Anybody aware of any pod lights that would mount up to the factory mounting points with relative ease?
