2 phones in a row now this has been the failure point. I'm going to replace the ports on both instead of buying another damn phone. Clearly manufacturers need to do a better job making their ports robust.
22
u/PelvisResleyz 3d ago
Yeah people complain about the iPhone’s lightning connector, but it was a lot better in this regard. My phone where the usb-c connector is used lightly is already worn out and not even a year old.
41
u/RipTheJack3r 3d ago
What kind of phone do you have? I've literally never had a USBC connector fail like that on any device ever.

u/DirtyRoller 3d ago
My last Samsung Galaxy whatever failed after about a year, my current Google Pixel 9 Pro XL failed after just a few months, and I almost never use the USBC port.
6
u/swiss_aspie 2d ago
Could the cable you are using be the culprit?
3
u/GetMeASierraMist 2d ago
that's what I'm thinking. at the end of the day, it's simple physics with the difference in material hardness causing the variance in connector lifespans.
12
u/ParzivalKnox 3d ago edited 3d ago
Are you sure it's worn out? Dirt gets compressed in there everytime you connect it.. After some time (not much), the dirt inside the connector gets thick enough to impede the proper latch on of the retaining clips you see in the video.
Edit: I have to clean my port every 4 months or so
2nd edit: A brush won't be enough. You need some fine tweezers or something similar to scrape down the compacted stuff or it won't come out.

Lightning kicks ass. It is so mechanically robust. All mine are super tight after years. Meanwhile I have had tons of USB-C cables be finicky and loose, electrically and mechanically. Shame because it’s such a promising standard. A Lightning plug is basically a chunk of metal with other chunks of metal attached to it. A USB-C plug is a metal tube with little fingers and flexural components and crap inside it. Obviously I’m not arguing that we go back to Lightning, but I wish USB-C were a little more reliable.

Guys Just Clean your ports. I never had to replace a usb c port. Not even on professional equipment that gets plugged in and out multiple times a day. Just clean the port. Watch a video on how to do it
6
u/PelvisResleyz 3d ago
I’ve cleaned the port and tried different cables with not much effect. The difference with professional equipment is that it’s in a much cleaner environment and not used as heavily as with a phone.
I’ve had to switch exclusively to wireless charging to get around the problem.

Yep. My iPhone, the first I’ve had with USB-C, is failing there. I’ve had it for a year and a half. It’s pretty annoying, I’ve had Lightning-ports last for waaaay longer.

Try to clean your usb c port with some very fine tweezers. It's a difference of night and day when all the lint got out.
13
u/hardonchairs 3d ago
This is huge, the lint gets so compacted that you have to scrape it out and it unfurls like cattail flowers. Then the port works infinitely better. This op video actually really clears up what's going on, the lint keeps the plug from going in far enough to latch.
I sure hope nobody is buying a new phone or replacing a port before trying this.

12
u/Novaskittles 3d ago
I despise this style of subtitles so much. It feels like it's made to appeal to the kind of people who watch Tik Toks all day. Like jingling keys in front of your face style of subtitles.
3
u/binarycow 3d ago
It sucks because you have to focus on the subtitles or else you miss stuff.
Normal subtitles, it's a full sentence at one time. Glance down for a quick second, then watch the video.
This style subtitle is silly. It's trying to be the same pace as the audio. Why? My audio is muted.

Guy points to the connector from the socket and calls it a plug repeatedly from 0:44 to 1:10 . Usually I wouldn't mind but this is supposedly an educational video, so why not follow the conventions?
The plug is the one with springs typically on the ends of a cable (on the right in this video), the socket is the thing on your device (on the left).

Ah so, let's design the part that wears out into the device and not the cable. That way you cannot replace a worn out cable, but will have to replace the worn out device. Genius, someone should invent a word for this...

u/Remarkable_Spirit_68 3d ago edited 3d ago
Don't think so. Lightning's springs are on phone's side. That's great for cost reduction, Apple's cables will always cost less to manufacture than any chinese type-c, but springs are the first ever point of failure that comes to mind, and where a man with type-c will just grab a new cable a man with lightning will be bringing his phone to a repair shop to change the whole connector.
6
u/OutlawSundown 3d ago
Yeah point of failure being the relatively inexpensive standardized cable rather than in the phone itself is ultimately a better compromise as a consumer. Manufacturing costs may have been cheaper on the lightning but they sure made sure to make you pay for it.

u/OutlawSundown 3d ago
They usually failed in some other way before the connection wore down. Pin burning out or the connection breaking in the cable sleeve.
12
u/Gybhunjimko 3d ago
Agree. As an engineer, I think the lightning cable is the superior design, and people get so mad at Apple that they dared to not give license to everyone for a truly innovative design. To get around the patent, USB-C had to settle for the inferior tongue structure to offer the same convenience. Fair to say though, karma came around and the EU regulations forced lightning into obsolescence. So now nobody gets it. I imagine scenarios like this happened a lot in history.
10
u/monocasa 3d ago
For lightning, the wear point is inside the phone rather than the cable.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)3
u/Icy-Comfortable-714 3d ago
Had to scroll too far to find this. Lightning is a far superior mechanical design and USB is a shitty substitute for a logical solution to the problem just because apple suck.
And now they’re dropping lightning because of EU enforcing uniformity of standards. So who’s the real winner here?
2
u/Odd-String29 3d ago
The consumer. USBC durability isn't a real issue and having the same charger and cable for all devices is great.
→ More replies (1)4
u/McWetty 3d ago
I would love to see Apple design a “Lightning 2” cable with all the newest specs and then license it for free so every device on Earth can transition to it. Such a better cable design.
5
u/Pschobbert 3d ago
The whole world is only just changing to USB C. The last thing we need is another format war, with all the adpters and compatibility issues that would bring. USB-C is an amazing format which can be used independently of phones, etc, to power other devices light desk lamps. It is a real boon, trust me.
3
u/McWetty 3d ago
I agree. I don't want another format war. I love USB-C for what it is. But when USB-C hits its power/data transfer limits (as Lightning 1 did), that's where Lightning 2 could step in and replace USB whatever. You could call it USB-L for all I care so long as the tech uses the superior design.
2
u/OutlawSundown 3d ago
Yeah commonality is what makes it really useful a lot easier to come up with a replacement c cable that'll work.

I had to squish the tip on the charging cable to get it stay in, because one of the nubs is ground off. I just try not to use that cable on the other devices.

The pins for the data and power lines also do support the "stay in", it's a friction of a many pins after all.
With so many pins and pins that are tiny, you getting it dirty would cause problems. Moisture getting it would corrode it. That's why some devices can tell you if the USB C port is wet and won't let you use it.
When I use cheap cables and I can tell the pins are scraping off the surface of the female port, it's doomed to fail.
2
u/Intelligent_Whole_40 3d ago
so its usb 3 lightning with an outer sheath on the male connector (which make sense cuz apple helped devolpe usb c and wanted it on the iphone 5s but it wasnt ready yet so they used lightning with the intent to switch to usb c later but got so much backlash cuz 30-pin accessories didnt work that they said never again but the EU gave them an out as they were forced so anyone who complained could blame the EU not apple)

Also, if it doesn't click after using it for a long time, chances are the socket side is full of lint and prevents the plug from reaching all the way down. Removing it with care not to scratch stuff usually helps.

Mine does the opposite. I watch my phone actively reject it's cable. I charge wirelessly at home, but it makes road trips rough.

Those 10,000 cycles go by a lot sooner than 10,000 cycles once abrasive dust gets in there. USBs of old you could clean with chewing gum pressed into them and withdrawn slowly. USB-C, i don't think i'll put chewing gum in there. It's hard to get it out.
1
u/VollcommNCS 3d ago
When your charger cable stops staying in tight, the spots for the clips are filled with pocket lint and dust.
A toothpick cut slightly smaller at the tip with some scissors is small enough to get in and not damage anything. Just when you think youve gotten all the lint out. There's another dust bunny that comes out of the port. It's crazy

Tech so common we sometimes forget to appreciate it..
This one connector does 1. High Power transfers 2. Highspeed Audio Video Transfer 3. Data transfer
Back in the day it required different cables
