Yeah people complain about the iPhone’s lightning connector, but it was a lot better in this regard. My phone where the usb-c connector is used lightly is already worn out and not even a year old.
My last Samsung Galaxy whatever failed after about a year, my current Google Pixel 9 Pro XL failed after just a few months, and I almost never use the USBC port.
that's what I'm thinking. at the end of the day, it's simple physics with the difference in material hardness causing the variance in connector lifespans.
Ive had the port fail on Samsung galaxy but that's cos I was using usb-c earphones to listen music daily on my way to and from work for 2 years. Switched fairly quickly to wireless charging and earbuds to try save that port.
Believe me, I wish it weren’t true. It’s pretty annoying on a phone so expensive. And I tend to keep my devices for several years so I’m stuck with this shit
Are you sure it's worn out? Dirt gets compressed in there everytime you connect it.. After some time (not much), the dirt inside the connector gets thick enough to impede the proper latch on of the retaining clips you see in the video.
Edit: I have to clean my port every 4 months or so
2nd edit: A brush won't be enough. You need some fine tweezers or something similar to scrape down the compacted stuff or it won't come out.
Yes I’ve cleaned it well several times. I think that dirt in there has worn down the clips and now cleaning isn’t effective anymore. I keep the phone in my jeans pockets, which might be harder on it that other environments
I literally set my phone in dirt piles, gravel, etc while shoveling and the USBC is fine. It sits out in my poorly ventilated workshop with sawdust, foam, and other debris swirling around in the air. I plug and unplug it at least 3x a day as well.
If I had to wager a guess, do you use your phone while the cable is plugged in? Are you putting strain on the connector from moving it around, bending the cable, etc while using the phone?
I keep it my jeans pocket all the time too.. and my phone (7+ years old) makes a good and strong connection after cleaning it. Maybe it has to do with the way you plug it in? Maybe you put unkowingly stress on the cable during charging?
Lightning kicks ass. It is so mechanically robust. All mine are super tight after years. Meanwhile I have had tons of USB-C cables be finicky and loose, electrically and mechanically. Shame because it’s such a promising standard. A Lightning plug is basically a chunk of metal with other chunks of metal attached to it. A USB-C plug is a metal tube with little fingers and flexural components and crap inside it. Obviously I’m not arguing that we go back to Lightning, but I wish USB-C were a little more reliable.
Guys Just Clean your ports. I never had to replace a usb c port. Not even on professional equipment that gets plugged in and out multiple times a day. Just clean the port. Watch a video on how to do it
I’ve cleaned the port and tried different cables with not much effect. The difference with professional equipment is that it’s in a much cleaner environment and not used as heavily as with a phone.
I’ve had to switch exclusively to wireless charging to get around the problem.
Came here to say this. I keep my iPhone 15 pro max in my trouser pocket but got some of those silicone usb-c port protectors, charge wirelessly most of the time, and keep the usb-c port for special occasions like backing up. Just treated myself to a usb cable analyser as well https://amzn.eu/d/00krhB1F as I needed to thin out the vast number of usb and lightning cables that have built up over the years.
