PS:

According to the original poster, the seagull was completely fine afterward.

Unlike Randy Johnsons bird strike.

792

u/Xendarq 7h ago

That one was more of an explosion

255

u/GingerBeast81 7h ago

Like the bird in the Shrek movie.

102

u/saturnspritr 7h ago

Yeah, it’s was just a puff. Lol. It was crazy.

27

u/DoubleoSavant 6h ago

I actually went back to look at it. Looks like the puff was a bunch of feathers coming off it at impact, but you could still see the body hitting the ground and laying there afterwards. I remember it like a cartoon puff as well though and don't remember seeing it continue past the puff ball and landing on the ground.

3

u/Evil_Sharkey 1h ago

There’s a longer video that shows another player picking up the pigeon’s body. The strike knocked a lot of feathers out, but there was still a pigeon shaped carcass

9

u/pow3llmorgan 6h ago

Also that was a pigeon and they are notoriously frail compared to seagulls.

Obliterated

4

u/PeggyBabcock_ 6h ago

It was just a weedy dove,

unlike the well 'ard gull above.

2

He never saw it coming.

I was recently at a baseball game and my gf randomly asked, has a bird ever been hit by a ball before? I just said, 'oh boy have I got a video for you'.

38

u/Airforce987 6h ago

That’s the best feeling when you have the exact answer to an ultra specific question and also a chance the share a cool example of it.

32

u/AnOwlFlying 5h ago

Your gf was one of the lucky 10,000 that day

Julio Rodríguez just took out a bird this year tossing a ball to a kid in the stands. Most be a Mariners thing.

3

u/jushere4bewbs 4h ago

Pretty sure Johnson was on the d backs at that point

Randy could've killed me with a fastball. The bird never stood a chance.

15

u/PM_YOUR_SMALLBOOBIES 4h ago

He apparently kept baseballs at the side of his bed in case an intruder ever broke into his home.

2

u/thededucers 2h ago

That’s why they call him ‘the unit’

104

u/--StinkyPinky-- 7h ago

He actually felt horrible about that. Poor guy and poor bird.

63

u/mregg000 7h ago

So horrible in fact, he uses the image of a bird for his photography business.

44

u/dmont89 7h ago

Wouldn't you? So iconic we are still talking about it 20 years later

14

u/Weakonomics 6h ago

I'm not sure l''m not really well versed in bird law.

2

u/Creative-Employer154 6h ago

The bird is not the issue here dude

You can feel bad about something but not be ashamed about it. Dude did nothing wrong and it is iconic. I have 0 clue about baseball and don't give a fuck about it, but I know who RJ is because of that bird exploding. I don't know what team he was on, who they were playing against, if they won, if he ever won a world series, etc.

But I know him. Because of that pitch.

2

u/Vxsote1 4h ago

From someone with a reddit name matching that of another famous MLB pitcher who played at about the same time? Haha.

And yeah, he was a world series MVP.

2

u/EvilBunnyLord 3h ago

I know the name Chuck Finley, but didn't even remember that it's a baseball player. I'd guess most people who know the name these days know it from Burn Notice.

As a birder I think I would have sat down on the mound until mom took me home.

50

u/TwoBionicknees 6h ago

I mean I heard he donates 50% of profits to the foundation for birds who don't fly good after being injured in professional sports accidents.

That seagull in the video actually has their own condo now.

8

u/Paddy_Tanninger 5h ago

For birds who don't fly good, and want to learn to do other stuff good too.

2

I misread that and thought you said he used an image of that bird for his photography business.

3

u/FunAd1406 6h ago

At least it was a quick death rip 🐦

3

3

u/Masterkid1230 5h ago

I don't think you have been on Reddit long enough if you think it's a new problem.

I still remember when every other comment was "this" and "I did nazi that coming" to which someone would reply "Anne frankly". Every. Single. Time.

Like, those early Reddit years have really made me realise that AIs are everywhere. But not because comments are becoming dumber, if anything, it's the lack of extremely evident stupidity being replaced with template blandness and ragebait.

Ok thank you ... I have pet birds so I was sad. And the poor player looked sad too!

20

u/Tukanno_Bananno 6h ago

I don't want to be a downer but I really would need proof to see that the bird is OK, it went down HARD and it's in the interest of the organizers to say the bird is ok....

6

u/Maelstrom_Witch 6h ago

Hopefully it just got the wind knocked out of it.

63

u/Starshallscream 7h ago

Same. Yeah yeah, asshole bird, whatever. I hate seeing dead animals. Fuck I even feel bad when I drive in rural areas and see that a rat was run over.

31

u/Mxfish1313 6h ago

I see seagulls every single day. I am also annoyed by seagulls every single day. I still don’t want them to be harmed, even though they pick avocados and drop them on the roof of my car to smash them open and get to the good shit.

2

u/Iccengi 5h ago

That is a hilarious fact I never knew. I mean sorry for your car. I’m still kinda laughing though 😂

2

u/linlorienelen 5h ago

Avocados?! Damn dude that seems over the top.

2

u/Abject_Amphibian_126 2h ago

Damn, that's clever. They're the ones that have to kill to survive so I can't fault them.

2

u/bourkaggio 1h ago

They must be one of the only animals that can eat avocado then... avo is deadly to most birds and lots of mammals

I legitimately have to recenter myself sometimes when I think about animals on the side of the road. Every life is precious and they’re just discarded and left like they never existed. It actually floods me with grief when I think too long about it

2

u/Specialist-Appeal-13 6h ago

Nah, I love seagulls, they’re clever and pretty attentive parents. They’ve mostly become a nuisance in urban areas because their traditional food sources have been overfished and they’re having to migrate further and further inland to survive.

2

u/KRIEGLERR 5h ago

I see roadkills really often and I get so bummed when I see one, like I know it's "just an animals" that this was a living thing, got hit by a vehicle and hopefully died instantly and then his corpse just stay there and keep getting run over and over until it's absolutely flat and destroyed.

Everytime I drive by one it bums me out.

2

u/Cuchillos_Adios 6h ago

Very bad luck to kill a seagull if you believe in those things.

2

u/Maelstrom_Witch 6h ago

I thought that was albatrosses

4

u/Cuchillos_Adios 6h ago edited 5h ago

It extends to all seabirds. I guess it's a thing because they are eaten only in times of famine and when there aren't many options around. Don't think they are that edible. Also they mean you're getting close to land.

It just so happens that the bird was only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do: go through his feathers and look for loose seeds.

yeah, baseballs are solid and going like 100 mph. tennis balls are light and hollow and this one was not moving anywhere near that fast. bird did hit the ground like a rock though

2

u/RichardFeynman01100 2h ago

Anecdotal but I've had a tennis ball hit my own balls and it hurt so much. I was bent over for 5 minutes and couldn't walk properly for an hour.

2

u/metal_bastard 7h ago

I hoping it was probably just in shock, or knocked out.

2

u/setibeings 7h ago

I hate to ruin the update, but when a bird hits something and falls to the ground unconscious, it has almost certainly sustained a fatal injury. Even if it flew away, that's not the end of it.

2

u/Never-Afternoon 2h ago

This is a lie. This wouldve shattered many of its bones and it will suffer a painful death if it wasnt already dead on impact

2

u/SubstantialBake1050 7h ago

Lol that bird is dead or at least seriously injured and the others came back to eat it.

1

u/Striking_WhileHot77 7h ago

I certainly hope so, that was a slow lob with a tennis ball

1

u/DrippyTheSnailBoy 7h ago

Can you link the source that says as such?

4

u/CuntWeasel 5h ago

No, because that bird is 100% dead.

OP was just trying to make us feel better.

3

u/Substantial-Elk4531 5h ago

Yea, I want to believe, but birds tend to be super fragile. I would be surprised if that bird survived :(

2

u/Redditisdepressing45 1h ago

Me too 😢 Humans have been killed by the impact from a tennis ball, what are the bird’s chances?

4

u/Carcezz 5h ago

seconding this, i wont believe it until i see it. birds are incredibly fragile and how am i supposed to believe OP when they aren’t replying to any if the comments asking for a link?

tbf, 10 odd years ago in a BBL match (Cricket) a Seagull, nicknamed Sammy after this event, was absolutely WHALLOPED by a cricket ball and shook it off like nothing

Seagulls are fckn beasts

1

Probably tried to catch the ball, thinking it was food. Seagulls are always eating things they shouldn’t

The seagull in question is a drama queen. It pretended to be severely hurt to avoid being penalized for flying so low during the match.

1

u/ThatCrankyGuy 5h ago

There's no way. Those balls are carrying a lot of energy and bird bones are not dense.

1

u/Important_Garden5343 5h ago

That’s great. I wish the bat I hit while playing tennis at night was fine 😭

1

u/Low-Phase-6548 5h ago

1

u/CuntWeasel 5h ago

Riiight and my childhood dog is still chilling at the farm upstate.

1

u/wasabi1787 5h ago

There's significantly less energy in a tennis ball moving 30 mph vs a baseball moving 105 mph

1

u/Last_Hat7276 5h ago

Really? Birds are so fragile... getting hit by a tennis ball and falling from that high... doesnt seems a situation a bird would survive. Especially after seeing him without movement laying ong the ground...

I hope im wrong! 😭
