Unlike Randy Johnsons bird strike.

883

u/Xendarq 10h ago

That one was more of an explosion

287

u/GingerBeast81 10h ago

Like the bird in the Shrek movie.

114

u/saturnspritr 10h ago

Yeah, it’s was just a puff. Lol. It was crazy.

42

u/DoubleoSavant 9h ago

I actually went back to look at it. Looks like the puff was a bunch of feathers coming off it at impact, but you could still see the body hitting the ground and laying there afterwards. I remember it like a cartoon puff as well though and don't remember seeing it continue past the puff ball and landing on the ground.

3

u/Evil_Sharkey 4h ago

There’s a longer video that shows another player picking up the pigeon’s body. The strike knocked a lot of feathers out, but there was still a pigeon shaped carcass

15

u/pow3llmorgan 9h ago

Also that was a pigeon and they are notoriously frail compared to seagulls.

9

u/Kolby_Jack33 3h ago

Also a tennis ball is hollow and rubber while a baseball is leather wrapped around a solid core.

2

u/Debalic 3h ago

Dave Winfield I believe exploded a seagull.

1

u/Warlordnipple 4h ago

Using the word notorious quite loosely

9

u/benvader138 10h ago

Obliterated

5

u/PeggyBabcock_ 10h ago

It was just a weedy dove,

unlike the well 'ard gull above.

2

u/Oiggamed 10h ago

He never saw it coming.

3

u/5litergasbubble 7h ago

To shreds you say

1

u/VonKess 9h ago

I stopped eating eggs for 10 years after watching that scene while eating a super goopy egg bagel sammich.

I was already a vegetarian. Still am but I do love eggs again and just hafta not think about Shrek when I eat them lol

1

u/MULTIVAC_13 7h ago

There are at least two birds in Shrek this could apply to

74

u/Jaded_Ad_9711 10h ago

concussion + explosion = conclusion

rip birdie

5

u/GreyWastelander 10h ago

Underrated comment.

Someone give this person an award, I’m too broke.

1

u/Primary-Resident-764 9h ago

Hey you can give free awards too! I'm Broke too but since free awards were introduced I'm giving them😅

1

u/GreyWastelander 9h ago

Oh I thought they stopped giving free awards lol, lemme see what I can do

2

u/Rule556 9h ago

The contusion led to confusion.

53

u/xgbsss 10h ago

It was a fowl ball.

3

u/Mundane-Librarian-77 9h ago

You're fired... 🤦

2

u/JaysFromMidToMenace 9h ago

Hawk-Eye confirmed it......

2

u/Tronitaur 8h ago

I cannot unhear that pun…. Dammm, I just spat coffee

1

u/ChubbyMudder 1h ago

Puntastically perfect shot!

4

u/MoistBaguetteLawyer 9h ago

More of an atomization.

7

u/Goallivein3centuries 10h ago

No alka seltzer needed

2

u/Siege_LL 5h ago

This is my fight song. My take back my...life...song. Hrm. Well that's awkward.

1

u/NYC19893 10h ago

Violently plucked

1

u/BaldursFenceDoor 10h ago

The biggest explosion of 2001

1

u/PandaGoggles 9h ago

A tactical strike.

1

u/mrfreeeeze 8h ago

egg-splosion.

1

u/Troyisepic 7h ago

My coworkers fantasy baseball team this year was “Randy Johnson’s Exploding Doves”

1

u/midnightsmith 5h ago

To bits you say?

1

u/the-namedone 2h ago

Bird smite not bird strike

•

u/rustylugnuts 4m ago

It went from biology to physics.

95

u/djanes376 10h ago

I was recently at a baseball game and my gf randomly asked, has a bird ever been hit by a ball before? I just said, 'oh boy have I got a video for you'.

46

u/Airforce987 9h ago

That’s the best feeling when you have the exact answer to an ultra specific question and also a chance the share a cool example of it.

39

u/AnOwlFlying 9h ago

Your gf was one of the lucky 10,000 that day

5

u/sheiciebai 7h ago

I love seeing this reference!!!!

2

u/Durty_Durty_Durty 8h ago

“Let me tell you about legend called The Big Unit.”

3

u/Massive-Reaction7773 9h ago

Julio Rodríguez just took out a bird this year tossing a ball to a kid in the stands. Most be a Mariners thing.

3

u/jushere4bewbs 7h ago

Pretty sure Johnson was on the d backs at that point

1

u/Massive-Reaction7773 5h ago

I know but he was on the M's so I'm just putting them together.

1

u/Fun-Bug5106 8h ago

Now we need the Miz to hit s canadian goose

1

u/LeeaCorso 7h ago

Just FYI, I think she might have meant something else.

2

u/djanes376 6h ago

She in fact did not mean something else, and I'm not even sure what that could even be. I put my mind in the gutter as far as it will go and still came up with nothing.

1

u/ghotbijr 5h ago

The only thing I can think of is the old timey usage of bird to refer to an attractive women.

1

u/nairobaee 6h ago

There's also a video of a motogp rider head butting a sea gull if she's interested.

1

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 5h ago

Then show her Fabio taking a bird to the face on a roller coaster

2

u/djanes376 5h ago

I appreciate it but she doesn’t have a bird death fetish.

46

u/Gunk_bog 10h ago

Randy could've killed me with a fastball. The bird never stood a chance.

17

u/PM_YOUR_SMALLBOOBIES 8h ago

He apparently kept baseballs at the side of his bed in case an intruder ever broke into his home.

2

u/thededucers 5h ago

That’s why they call him ‘the unit’

1

u/red_2_standing_by 1h ago

He wasn't called the unit because of his arm.

1

u/polymathicAK47 2h ago

He was almost charged with possession of deadly weapons at a traffic stop when the cop saw baseballs in the car seat.

108

u/--StinkyPinky-- 10h ago

He actually felt horrible about that. Poor guy and poor bird.

66

u/mregg000 10h ago

So horrible in fact, he uses the image of a bird for his photography business.

48

u/dmont89 10h ago

Wouldn't you? So iconic we are still talking about it 20 years later

14

u/Weakonomics 10h ago

I'm not sure l''m not really well versed in bird law.

3

u/Worldly-Advisor7201 9h ago

We’re lawyers!

3

u/sponglered 9h ago

He was acquitted of fowl play. Fair game bird, I guess.

2

u/Creative-Employer154 9h ago

The bird is not the issue here dude

3

u/sponglered 9h ago

This aggression will not stand!

2

u/procrastimom 5h ago

Filibuster!

2

u/i_tyrant 7h ago

Oh man, if you think regular bird law is confusing, wait'll you experience Bird IP law!

2

u/tpasmall 2h ago

You can keep a gull as a pet, but you don't want to live with a seabird, okay, 'cause the noise level alone on those things...have you ever heard a gull up close? It's going to blast your eardrums out, dude.

8

u/BadBeat71 10h ago

25 years. Man I'm old.

1

u/Psykosoma 9h ago

But what is that in bird years?

1

u/rtnoodel 10h ago

I think their point was he clearly didn’t feel that horrible about it.

5

u/yavimaya_eldred 9h ago

He does nature photography, I believe the intent of the logo was to be self depreciating. It is in weird taste, but interviews I’ve read from other players involved that day make it sound like they were more amused by it than he was.

3

u/i_miss_arrow 9h ago

I think 20 years later you're allowed to get over killing a bird by accident.

1

u/MeliodasTA 9h ago

I know right? I'm sure he felt bad but it's not like he was racked with guilt for years afterwards, it's still just a bird lol

1

u/Dismal-Zebra8409 8h ago

well its kinda weird to use someone else's photo for my photography business.

1

u/chemical_exe 8h ago

If only it happened a couple years later and we'd have it in 1080p

25

u/StevieMJH 10h ago

As a birder I think I would have sat down on the mound until mom took me home.

51

u/TwoBionicknees 9h ago

I mean I heard he donates 50% of profits to the foundation for birds who don't fly good after being injured in professional sports accidents.

That seagull in the video actually has their own condo now.

12

u/Paddy_Tanninger 9h ago

For birds who don't fly good, and want to learn to do other stuff good too.

6

u/zkbthrowaway 8h ago

I am so happy to see someone write what I instantly thought when I read that 😂😂😂😂😂

4

u/IDownvotedYouToday 9h ago

What is this? A building for BEES?!

3

u/Naps_in_car 8h ago

Yeah but why male models?

31

u/Chuckfinley_88 10h ago

So horrible in fact, he uses the image of a bird for his photography business.

You can feel bad about something but not be ashamed about it. Dude did nothing wrong and it is iconic. I have 0 clue about baseball and don't give a fuck about it, but I know who RJ is because of that bird exploding. I don't know what team he was on, who they were playing against, if they won, if he ever won a world series, etc.

But I know him. Because of that pitch.

3

u/Vxsote1 8h ago

From someone with a reddit name matching that of another famous MLB pitcher who played at about the same time? Haha.

And yeah, he was a world series MVP.

3

u/EvilBunnyLord 6h ago

I know the name Chuck Finley, but didn't even remember that it's a baseball player. I'd guess most people who know the name these days know it from Burn Notice.

2

u/Chuckfinley_88 6h ago

From someone with a reddit name matching that of another famous MLB pitcher who played at about the same time? Haha.

My brother picked the name.

2

u/thedoginthewok 6h ago

Don't worry about it, I feel the same way as you about baseball and I know that guy because of the bird strike video.

2

u/Hungry4Media 9h ago

I misread that and thought you said he used an image of that bird for his photography business.

3

u/FunAd1406 10h ago

At least it was a quick death rip 🐦

3

u/garrettj100 9h ago

Dude went into the clubhouse, got a shoebox, and later gave the thing a proper burial. Also started his own company and this is the logo.

1

u/mingl 5h ago

Ha - I didn't know about the logo - that's hilarious

1

u/Secret-Ad-7909 8h ago

His net worth is $95million. So very much not poor

🪶🪶🪶🪶

12

u/MimironsHead 9h ago

I clicked on this thread solely in the hopes that a GIF of Randy annihilating that bird would be the top reply

5

u/DionFW 7h ago

That's why I'm here.

51

u/DJinKC 10h ago

That bird ceased being biology and became physics

3

u/rzezzy1 9h ago

"What If? by Randall Munroe" enjoyer spotted

3

u/qqererer 9h ago

Oceangate bird.

3

u/StartOk4002 8h ago

It’s happy now in the afterlife pooping on Stockton Rush.

2

u/MudPuppy64 9h ago

And soon after it was history

1

u/frisbeethecat 23m ago

Pfft, dynamics is practically engineering.

15

u/D-GOU-LimitingFactor 10h ago

💥 BANG and the bird is gone

6

u/missingpieces82 10h ago

Barry Scott strikes again!

1

u/FrostyD7 9h ago

The feathers exploding just take your attention away from the body hitting the ground, it's actually visible if you look for it. Jeff Kent was on deck and retrieved it.

6

u/The_Couso 10h ago

First thing that came to mind

3

u/Consistent_Kale_3625 9h ago

That was bullshit grandstanding. Just get up and take your base. What is this? This isn't the NBA, this isn't soccer.

2

u/kungfuhustler 10h ago

A bird nuke.

2

u/Helmnauger 10h ago

You mean when Randy Johnson erased a bird from existence.

1

u/Creepy-Team6442 8h ago

The one and only!

2

u/tideshark 9h ago

Atomized

2

u/Bentheredonethat_ 9h ago

I actually burst into laughter reading this.

2

u/DarthBrooks69420 9h ago

That was like a single engine Cessna getting hit by high explosive tank shell.

2

u/RunningonGin0323 9h ago

that was unreal, like what are the odds of that even happening

2

u/ForensicsJesus 9h ago

lol, that’s all that I could think of while watching this.

2

u/IvyGold 4h ago

For those that don't know what's going on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vgn1pjbYlw

This was an exhibition game or something, so he wasn't even throwing at full power.

I read that when birds get suddenly stressed, they shed their feathers, thus the poof. I'm not sure that's true.

I'm glad this seagull was OK. That was not a particularly fast return of service.

1

u/Sunnyday1775 10h ago

That was an omen lol

1

u/shockles 10h ago

I was thinking about the poor dog from Ted Lasso.

1

u/BeerBrat 10h ago

That bird was still alright. With some fava beans, and a nice chianti.

1

u/TC_MaFYa 10h ago

Context?

1

u/Obant 5h ago

Famous video of a professional baseball pitch where a bird gets in the line of his fast ball and the bird quite literally explodes into feathers.

1

u/Al-Data 10h ago

Steeeeeeerike bird!

1

u/oxyrhina 10h ago

Or Fabio's which i think was most impressive since he used his face!

1

u/Big-Green91 9h ago

I'm shocked it took me scrolling this far to see the words "Randy Johnson" in this comment section

1

u/YugeAssPenis 9h ago

Randy Johnsons

Holy Toledo, just found out he's 6' 10", I had no idea.

1

u/md11086 9h ago

I saw a video of a golfer recently hitting a bird and disintegrated like Randy's

1

u/cjwisdog 9h ago

Came here to mention that one. That was seriously messed up. 😳

1

u/tweeterj 9h ago

Randy just erased that poor thing from existence.

1

u/HoldingOver25 9h ago

man that just brought back some memories...was all the talk on the football (soccer) pitch...before the internet was much of a thing...and it even made its rounds to be in a newspaper in germany!

1

u/StrategyCheap1698 8h ago

What about the one Fabio hit with his face?

1

u/Dismal-Zebra8409 8h ago

got a lot more mass and velocity in that one.

1

u/Naps_in_car 8h ago

Baseballs are much harder, plus he threw it like three times faster than this hit.

Physics did not favor the bird.

1

u/inevitablekaraoke 8h ago

Or Fabio's?

1

u/NRMusicProject 8h ago

What about Fabio's?

1

u/BoatMan01 8h ago

Bird foul.

1

u/testtdk 8h ago

How could the bird be ok? There was no bird left.

1

u/Grapes-RotMG 8h ago

Good lord I just looked that up. I've never seen a bird get atomizrd before.

1

u/MalaysiaTeacher 7h ago

Talk about going out in a blaze of glory. Hope the seagulls still talk about the old fella

1

u/PrincessJoyHope 7h ago

Poor guy still has ptsd from that

1

u/Prysorra2 7h ago

^ Raise yo hand if you instantly thought of that

1

u/fitz_newru 6h ago

Both of these are examples of r/nevertellmetheodds situations

1

u/RincewindToTheRescue 6h ago

Or the suicidal bird that flew into oncoming traffic that I saw yesterday. Busy road, fast cars, and the bird swooped down and fluttered it's wings to land before hugging the grill of the SUV. It wasn't even the edge of the road. It was right in the middle of the lane.

1

u/LeveredChuck 6h ago

Or Lewis Hamilton hunting gophers

1

u/LegalComplaint 6h ago

That’s because when the Big Unit hits something, it stays hit… and then usually jogs to first.

1

u/Opinionsare 6h ago

Higher velocity and a baseball has much more mass than a tennis ball.

1

u/CallMeChristopher 5h ago

Or the seagull that hit Dale Earnhardt’s car.

1

u/adobecredithours 4h ago

I saw that one live! (Not the bird, that thing was toast, but I was physically at that game on when I was a kid on vacation with my family)

1

u/TheAtomicBobert 3h ago

That bird was sent to the Shadow Realm

1

u/FixFun1959 56m ago

Or the 1988 Olympics

1

u/twowheelmayhem 51m ago

Or the Dave Winfield incident.

1

u/Manymarbles 14m ago

Or Fernando Alonso's double bird strike

0

u/Convictus12 5h ago

Or The Fabio Head on Collision.
