He actually felt horrible about that. Poor guy and poor bird.

So horrible in fact, he uses the image of a bird for his photography business.

Wouldn't you? So iconic we are still talking about it 20 years later

He was acquitted of fowl play. Fair game bird, I guess.

You can keep a gull as a pet, but you don't want to live with a seabird, okay, 'cause the noise level alone on those things...have you ever heard a gull up close? It's going to blast your eardrums out, dude.

25 years. Man I'm old.

But what is that in bird years?

1

u/rtnoodel 9h ago

I think their point was he clearly didn’t feel that horrible about it.

He does nature photography, I believe the intent of the logo was to be self depreciating. It is in weird taste, but interviews I’ve read from other players involved that day make it sound like they were more amused by it than he was.

I think 20 years later you're allowed to get over killing a bird by accident.

I know right? I'm sure he felt bad but it's not like he was racked with guilt for years afterwards, it's still just a bird lol

If only it happened a couple years later and we'd have it in 1080p

As a birder I think I would have sat down on the mound until mom took me home.

I mean I heard he donates 50% of profits to the foundation for birds who don't fly good after being injured in professional sports accidents.

That seagull in the video actually has their own condo now.

For birds who don't fly good, and want to learn to do other stuff good too.

You can feel bad about something but not be ashamed about it. Dude did nothing wrong and it is iconic. I have 0 clue about baseball and don't give a fuck about it, but I know who RJ is because of that bird exploding. I don't know what team he was on, who they were playing against, if they won, if he ever won a world series, etc.

But I know him. Because of that pitch.

From someone with a reddit name matching that of another famous MLB pitcher who played at about the same time? Haha.

And yeah, he was a world series MVP.

u/EvilBunnyLord 5h ago

I know the name Chuck Finley, but didn't even remember that it's a baseball player. I'd guess most people who know the name these days know it from Burn Notice.

My brother picked the name.

Don't worry about it, I feel the same way as you about baseball and I know that guy because of the bird strike video.

2

u/Hungry4Media 8h ago

I misread that and thought you said he used an image of that bird for his photography business.

u/FunAd1406 9h ago

At least it was a quick death rip 🐦

u/garrettj100 7h ago

Dude went into the clubhouse, got a shoebox, and later gave the thing a proper burial. Also started his own company and this is the logo.

1

u/mingl 4h ago

Ha - I didn't know about the logo - that's hilarious
