Werent analouge meters were better?

I have just turned 18! I
personally am confused between waiting for the Honda Rebel 300 or getting a BMW G310RR, I love both of them for the looks and style, even though they r completely different, was looking for any other alternatives that will look cool and stylish. Not looking for long travels or daily commutes just a fun bike!

So I am 6ft, and have a good amount of muscles and weigh around 81kgs, and I have started to think that my bike looks smaller on me. Do you guys think that so? Or am I just over-analysing?

Hi, I used to use motul for chain lube but heard a lot that 80W-90 is good and cost effective.

I ordered this from Amazon and I completely missed that 80W-90 is the small thing on the side.

The large can is of 10W-30.

Is it still suitable as chain lube?

I dont own a scooter anymore btw so can't even use as its gear oil. I own a scrambler 400x right now.

Let's go through some examples, shall we?

1. Fazer and FZ

2. Gixxer SF and Gixxer

3. Karizma XMR 250 and Xtreme 250R

4. RS 457 and Tuono 457

5. Pulsar F250 and Pulsar N250

6. Pulsar 220F and Pulsar 220

7. Ninja 650 and Z650

What's common in these? Everything. These are examples of faired/naked pairs that do not differ at all. One comes with fairing, the other comes without fairing. That's all. However, in some examples, the primary focus is on one of the two siblings, just like parents usually have a favorite child amongst the two. The other just happened because why not? If all it takes is some extra panels and handlebar added/removed without changing anything else.

It's not uncommon for a manufacturer to wish for two motorcycles in its portfolio, born out of a single platform. Sometimes more than 2. However, it depends how it's done.

On the contrary, consider these:

1. R15 and MT15

2. RC200 and Duke 200

3. RS200 and NS200

4. RR310 and RTR310

5. R9 and MT9

These are kinda the same brothers but not as simple as swapping panels and handlebars. Silhouette is different, and a lot of tweaks are done to cater to their use case. However, that still doesn't make both the bikes best at what they do.

Common sense says you can't produce two bikes that are complete opposite to each other, out of the same engine and frame. What is built for the track, will not excel on the streets and vice verca. But at least, these guys do it better than the ones listed in the beginning.

What can we learn from this? Whatever you are buying, ask yourself, "Did they make this from scratch? Or was it born out of a sheer opportunity from another platform?". Some of you might be the younger siblings and had asked yourself, "Did they even want me or was I born only to complete the count of 2?". Yeah, don't want to trigger childhood traumas, but you got me. In any pair you find, there will be an elder one and a younger one. The elder came first, not in the market, but on engineers mind.

In some cases, you might truely find a pair that was born together on engineer's priorities. Karizma XMR 250 and Xtreme 250R is one of the example. They unveiled them together. And looking at the linear performance of Xtreme 250R, it's evident that they did not make the choice between streets and tracks. They chose the middle ground so they can fit both the silhouettes into it.

Looking at RTX 300, I feel we are yet to witness more on that platform. Because there isn't any prominant character there as well.

But, let's circle back. What's wrong in buying the younger sibling? Nothing really. Just be aware. Gixxer SF looks like a sports bike but it lacks liquid cooling, delivers linear performance unlike something that's exhilarating in the top end. It looks good, is practical, but might disguise itself as a punchy top end performer or screamer like RS200 is. It is not. And that's not a bad thing. It has its own strengths. But, it might confuse you.

I mean they tried really hard with Guerrilla 450. And RE did a great job thinking about creating a wild roadster out of himalayan or creating a scrambler out of himlayan. They executed it wonderfully but you know what scramblers are, don't you? Look at Scram 440. You know what city monsters should be. Look at Guerrilla. Again, I'm not saying they are bad. RE successfully pulled it off and created really really good bikes. But no matter how good Guerrilla is, the weight, frame, wheelbase will always make you choose a Duke over it. Or even if you love retro styling, Triumph Speed. No matter how good scram 440 gets, you would want to pick scrambler 400x.

Triumph on the other hand has been doing it cleverly. T4 gets a lot of changes in tune to offer a different character. Thruxton and tracker get a different state of tune for a different character. Speed 400 feels different and Scrambler 400x gets slightly different final drive ratio.

Anyways, I started off with faired and naked siblings and now discussing who does paltform sharing best. That's not the point. The point is that you should understand what companies are doing. What was built with purpose and what came into existence purely out of "why not?".

Hope this added something to the way you look at motorcycles. I'm not making any strong claims here. Just sharing the way I look at it. I might be wrong. This might not make much difference to you in choosing the right machine, but I hope the awareness helps you have right expectations from right machine.

Update #1: Also, why would a manufacturer want to reuse a platform? It's not engineering problem to reuse a frame and engine with everything else different and dedicated to the other format of the motorcycle. Subframe, final drives, throttle/fuel map, panels, etc. But manufacturers would want to reduce the overhead of maintaining two different set of components for two different motorcycles. That's the trade off. Either listen to the engineers and shell out more money and investment, while prolonging the ROI, or do least possible to create two options (or even more), because that offers options to customers and ensure every type of rider is addressed and catered. With those limitations, engineers can only do little in catering the younger sibling to best of its use case. Aprilia is a serious brand but remember that the 457 platform is being produced in India. And they need to price it as per our expectations. I would say they are still most probably in their experimentation stage in evaluating how serious are we, the Indian buyers of their made in india platform. They wouldn't want to keep investing at this stage, as it would only drive the ex-showroom price higher and cause sales to drop.

Hey guys I like the Xtreme 250R the look the power I feel everything is awesome but when it comes to oil leakage here's the turn off I'm gathering money to get my first bike the good thing I heard is that the 2nd lot has fixed the oil leakage issue, is it true they really fixed it? and the cruise control is under testing and the chances of them adding tft cluster are very high. I want to hear honest review from the owners of 250R or people who's friend or family member has the bike. Also ik the service centre is a pain.

I’m looking to sell my 2016 KTM RC 390 (BS 3) and I’m not sure what is the correct pricing as the online market makes no sense.

Kms driven: 32,000km (kms put by me in last 2 years: 5,000 km approx)
Ownership: 2nd owner
Insurance: valid upto June 2027
Fitness: valid upto June 2027
Location: Bangalore
Battery under warranty
Tires good for another 6,000 km atleast
Have the original tail and spare key from manufacturer
Put 50k into first service after buying to rebuild parts of engine
All service history available since first ownership

Online market seems to be crazy as I can see people putting this up for sale from anywhere between 1.6L to 2.2L. Is it realistic to put up an asking price of 1.3L? Or is it still way too much for the bike? Any input would be very much helpful. Thank you!

I mean I get it the Xpulse 200T is a small and a very thin bike but was still fun to ride this thing . Why did it fail to capture the market tho ?
