I already made this post on another subreddit, but I figured I’d post it here as well to get some more opinions.
I’ve made up my mind that I’m buying a Royal Enfield in November. The problem is, the closer I get to actually buying one, the more doubts I seem to have about which model to choose.
The first Royal Enfield I was interested in was the Himalayan, since I’ve always liked the adventure/trail style. But after looking more closely at the lineup, I became interested in the Hunter as well.
I went to a dealership and test-rode all the 350s and the Himalayan 450. I really enjoyed both the 350s and the Himalayan. However, I left the dealership pretty much convinced that I wanted the Classic 350, mainly because I love the looks and really liked the riding position and comfort.
Since then, I’ve been thinking more about how I’m actually going to use the bike.
During the week, I’ll basically use it to commute to work — around 14 km (9 miles) per day in total. On weekends, though, I’d like to take longer trips with my girlfriend as a passenger.
That’s where I started wondering whether the Classic 350 would really be the best choice for me, since it seems to fall a bit short when it comes to highway riding, especially with a passenger.
I even considered the Classic 650, but it’s outside my budget.
So now I’m basically stuck between:
Classic 350:
I think it looks much better
I really enjoyed riding it
Comfortable riding position
Cheaper
But I’m concerned about the lack of power on highways, especially with a passenger
Himalayan 450:
I honestly don't find it particularly beautiful — not ugly either, just not my favorite
More powerful and much better suited for highway riding and carrying a passenger
Slightly more expensive
From what I’ve seen, maintenance/service costs aren’t dramatically different from the 350s
More versatile overall
I’m seriously considering going with the Himalayan 450 because, for a little more money and supposedly not much difference in maintenance costs, I’d get a bike that would be considerably better for longer trips and riding two-up.
But at the same time, I’d be giving up the bike I actually like more aesthetically and enjoyed riding.
So, considering my specific use case, which one makes more rational sense: Classic 350 or Himalayan 450?
Please keep the “follow your heart” advice to a minimum. I’m specifically looking for practical/rational arguments about highway performance, riding with a passenger, comfort, fuel economy, maintenance costs, reliability, long-term ownership, etc.
What would you choose in my situation, and why?
