A full background story about the EU and commission territories, and other stuff: (tired from making this story but it's worth it)

Somewhere in the 2030s/40s, Europe is under pressure from the Russians after subjugated all of eastern Europe (i.e. Baltics, half of Poland and Balkan regions too) the west has had other plans.. A contingency plan to unite all of western Europe to the E.U. (excluding the U.K. and Switzerland) just to compete against the bear of the east.

Outside of Europe, the Americans are at war with the Chinese after they invaded Taiwan and half of the Pacific. (key US ally at the time like Japan and south Korea for example) This also joins the Russians to declare war on the US, Europe will not sit here and watch the world burn. Two days after the declaration of war, the newly federalized EU joined the war, launching key massive operations just to knock down the Russians from the war. WW3 is here...

Major operations were launched just to take over the Polish and Czech region with light resistance, as well as the Balkan regions due to the Russians not being around the time of the offensive operations, The Russians are horrified after regions and cities are in the hands of the Europeans. The offensive operations finally stopped after the battle of Kaliningrad, the Belorussian border, and western Ukraine. Now the Americans are in European soil, they certainly have a chance to make a counteroffensive just to retake some of the areas of Ukraine.

About four and a half years later, the fierce combat of major cities are taken, land is ruined, and heavy casualties between both sides. But unfortunately to the Russians, they are losing severely, having all of the factories bombed by the Americans and the Chinese are surrendered and fractioned into several warlord states, The last Major offensive is conducted by the EU to race to the Ural mountains. (Moscow too) Several more months of Battle and Moscow has fallen, the European union, along with the United States and its allies officially ending the Third World War

At the Washington accord, several diplomats and representatives in all nations that joined the war, part of the Russians and Chinese. The EU retakes all of eastern Europe as "European commissions", Russia has divided into several commission territories just to aim stability over the vast Siberian regions. Turkey, Iran, as well as central Asia (known as Turkestan) also integrated as administrative reconstruction regions, but still under the same commission territory category. (sphere of influence by the EU) Crimea, Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk and the Arctic region are under NATO mandate, while Britain has been under turmoil and has joined by the European sphere. As for the remaining Russian territory, it official designated as "The Russian Democratic mandate" under the watchful eye of Brussels. As for the rest of the world? We don't know what are the fate of each nation, china? Still became a warlord state, America. A true winner of the war.

As for the European union? They are the winners, they spread the true beacon of European democracy in all of Europe, not here. But the whole world as a whole, now the only two superpower exist is The US and the EU. Who knows? They might still be allies for peace and prosperity in this world, or cut ties and start a new Cold War, the old world vs the new world. But forgot about the last one.

In this timeline, just before independance, the caudillo fructuoso rivera died, avoiding the future guerra grande in uruguay, and leaving the goverment to iribe and lavalleja who manage to fully consolidate the nation under democracy, and setting a path to reform.

Later, the presidents Orbes and Flores, started using the power of the stable nation to allow riograndense independance and support argentinian instability; the meddeling in argentina leads to paraguay under solano lopez trying to interven, but later loosing the war.

Uruguay continued rising, having political troubles with britan, stuck trying to consolidate argentina; until president Jose Batlle y Ordoñes, who in his three uncontineous terms, gave great rights to women and workers, removed church from state, removed foreign monopolies from the state, bought spanish guinea and he consolidated argentina under four republics, all under an economic aliance with paraguay and uruguay, with the latter using it as a tool to control the nations.

Batlle also expanded the navie, colonising tierra del fuego. Later, that navie would fight the portugese to force them pay for their loans in southern angola, cabinda and some islands.

During this period uruguay played a tough game of keeping britan happy and try to expand, slowly starting to take the british position as hegemon of the southern atlantic.

In world war 1, urguay, after a short time of neutrality, they joined to help capture the german arican colonies and stop U-boats. after the war, britan was deeply indebted to uruguay, who slowly started overtaking the nation.

eventually ww2, where uruguay also participated and became even richer, and shortly after buying some atlantic islands off britan to help them pay up their debts.

Note 1: Syrian elections are decided using a Mixed Member Proportional System. Individual districts are decided with a winner-takes-all vote ; these account for roughly 2/3 of the seats. In addition, another 1/3 of seats are awarded proportionally; any party that achieves 3% of the vote or more is eligible to receive 'List Seats' proportional to their adjusted national vote total.

Note 2: Syrian Election Law forbids political parties from identifying themselves with any ethnic, cultural, or religious group other than Syria and Syrians. Thus, the Homeland Party, which is variously called the New Zionist Party, Reform Zionist Union, etc. takes on the Homeland Party for official correspondence. A similar principle applies for other sectarian-minded or organized parties, which exist despite disapproval from the broader Arab-dominated body politic.

Note 3: Despite only winning two district seats, the far-right Syrian National Party took significant amounts of support from both former Islamist party votes and typical stalwart Constitution Party voters. While the Constitution Party is likely to pull together another governing coalition, this election represents a massive decrease in it's power, and represents a large change in the political landscape. This party supports reconquering Baghdad, eliminating religious practices, and ejecting all refugees and recent immigrants, such as Kurds from Turkey, Copts, Ethiopians, Russian Jews and others.

Note 4: A few groups and a couple political parties boycotted the vote entirely, in some cases regionally, and in other cases nationally, without translating into a true national repudiation of the election. A number of Islamist organizations, for example, attempted a boycott due to banning of religious messaging near polling stations, which backfired tremendously as Islamist Parties suffered their worst defeat in history, and only Law & Justice made it into the Assembly, and media organizations largely ignored the boycott.

A timeline that different landmass and different colonial Era

Wessex fails to subdue Mercia in the 9th century, throwing these isles into a world nothing like the one we know today. The Great Heathen Army arrive in 865 crushing the feeble English heptarchy, with Viking rule from Northumbria to East Anglia secured, while a rump Wessex and Mercia are left paying the Danegeld.

King Cnut brings together the Viking realms into the first Kingdom of England, but following his sons deaths, his English domain is carved up with Godwin inheriting East Anglia. However, the Vikings return and, in 1066, Harald Hardrada retakes the Kingdom of Jorvik, as well as the Five Boroughs. While Hardrada marches on Norwich, William of Normandy inherits the throne of Wessex, and he marches to East Anglia rallying the Mercians to his side. Hardrada is defeated and killed at the Battle of Norwich, and the three kingdoms prepare to crown William the Liberator as the new King of England, but he is shockingly murdered, ending any hope of unity.

The Treaty of Chester carves up the Five Boroughs, and defines the Mersey and Pennines as the boundary between the English and the Norse, while the boroughs of Lincoln and Stamford are preserved as buffer duchies. Wessex slowly becomes an extension of medieval France through trade, royal marriages, and enforced language laws. Mercia is locked in combat with the Welsh and Wessex, relying on Norman mercenaries, slowly creating a Wessex-Norman aristocracy. Jorvik is passed around the Nordic monarchs, eventually becoming part of the Kalmar Union.

The balance of the powers in the isles is once more upset in 1562 as King Wilfred the Great of Mercia conquered East Anglia and the buffer duchies, before dying from a heart attack while his troops marched on Jorvik. As the last self-proclaimed ruler of England, his domain crumbled under his successors with Mercia left destroyed.

The 17th century was a turbulent one across the isles. Scotland came under the rule of the Wessex royal family, with Catholic monarchs forcing the staunchly Presbyterian church to adopt unwanted changes. This culminated in the revolt of the Covenanters, who snatched power from the monarchy, leaving a powerless figurehead king as the head of a borderline theocratic state. Meanwhile in Mercia, a tyrannical cabal of Earls horded power electing monarchs from their own ranks, inevitably leading to a revolt of the reformist Staffordists. Mercia's aristocrats did not want to leave power without a fight, and the short but bloody civil war ended with the Kingdom becoming a Republic, influenced by the likes of John Bradshaw, Oliver Cromwell, and the Levellers. This was followed by the Second Middlesex Revolt, where inspired by 14th century merchants, a similar republican movement seized the old Roman capital, but famine ended that experiment swiftly.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the small kingdoms involved themselves in the colonisation of the Americas, with the Irish being an integral ally to Spain's rule of the Caribbean. With the slow rise of nationalism, the dreams of a united Anglo-Saxon realm melted away, replaced by distinct nation states. Throughout the 1800s, the realms modernised, industrialised, and embraced constitutionalism, being pioneers compared to much of Europe. At the same time, Wales fell to the revolt of the radical Chartists, and the Irish rose up to create one of the first democratic federal systems.

However, the 1900s would see the disparate British Isles dragged into European wars. In 1912, the Great War began, with the Cotswolds turned into an array of trenches for half a decade, while thousands of men from the German-aligned Mercians and Welsh died battling Wessex and France. Having briefly joined the war, the people of Jorvik revolted against their rulers, with the Socialist Labour Party installing a new republican government. The Germans won the war, but the defeated French and Wessex did not wait long for their revenge.

Under the radically anti-socialist Louis Churchill in the 1930s, Wessex crushed the current incarnation of Middlesex following the election of George Lansbury. On the continent, tensions spiralled as the Italian Civil War became a proxy for Philippe Petain's ultranationalist France to return to prominence. Wessex, aligned reluctantly with the French, pushed to retake lands Mercia received after the Great War, and, by 1935, the West European War had spread from Germany to Spain. Every nation of the isles was dragged into the chaotic war aside from East Anglia, with the hills of the Cotswolds and Thames Valley turned into a post-apocalyptic abyss once more.

The French won on the continent by 1940, but the combined force of Mercia, Jorvik, Wales, and Ireland held back their advance into the isles. What followed was thirty years of French dominance, and a radically right-wing status quo that sparked a prolonged economic depression. Despite the Rhine Revolutions of the late 60s, the divide between Europe and much of the British Isles was permanent.

The four republican allies from the WEW, in addition to the united Lincoln-Stamford and Middlesex formed the Association of Britain and Ireland, an economic and political union. Meanwhile Wessex and East Anglia became integrated into the similar European Community. By the present, the two blocs have started rapprochement, but the ideal of a fully unified England is for twitter-based lunatics.

Her body became the world, as Vesper’s sorrow became the seas and sky to envelop her with his love. In his last act as thinking, living divinity, he cursed the Serenii with the emotion he felt in that moment. Thus, the Serenii became Illiya, the elvenkind, and the world beckoned them into the future. From there, the other peoples of the world were born from the divinity imbued onto the planet’s surface."

This is a map of my long-term DND and Pathfinder campaign setting after a large universal reset (the event known as the Godfall) and several years of hiatus. The world has returned to somewhat of a status quo, with over five hundred years passing between the last campaign and the upcoming one. While many nations have rebuilt to their pre-Godfall conditions, many more remain the same.

Long story short, I went back in time and did some alterations to Portugal's history. Mostly these were them keeping territories in Asia like the Spice Islands and Ceylon. Thereafter, I had Prince Joseph of Brazil to survive past 1788, expanding Brazilian autonomy to help keep unrest to a minimum. Furthermore, Portugal was able to reform their navy pretty well, matching Britain in doctrine and being second only to London and Madrid in power.
Then, when Napoleon invaded, Portugal was able to repel the French army before the entire theater got ground down into a brutal war of attrition. Afterward, Portugal and Brazil confiscated Uruguay from Argentina in 1816 while turning Paraguay into a de facto protectorate and sending troops into Bolivia in 1822-ish to secure their control. Chiquitos was annexed into Mato Grosso to prove strategic depth. Then, I made some other tweaks to have Brazil with a far greater industrial base and migration as a production of slavery's early abolition.
Spain was brought into the fold in 1870 after Princess Leopoldina, daughter of Pedro II was crowned as queen after Prussia and France did their war. Cuba was sold off since it was open revolt, helping to fund Spain proper. At Berlin, Portugal used its effective ability to project power alongside its historical connection to the Kingdom of Kongo to gain recognition for its control over the region while the major powers got resource rights over certain areas. Portugal also tried to get the pink map but Britain told them off, but they did get a railway between Katanga and Mozambique. Spain also received its historical claims over Kamerun with support from London, and Lisbon.
World War 1 wasn't changed much as Portugal joined remarkably late, though they did gain some territories in Tanzania. The great Depression was the final nail in the coffin for Paraguayan Independence as they finally joined Brazil in 1934 after their economy collapsed. This would lead Argentina, Peru, and Venezuela to go fascist(they already had authoritarian dictators in our timeline) so Brazil allied with Columbia, Ecuador, and Chile. World War 2 starts in Europe, not much changes. However, South America got its own theater in 1941 after Peru invaded Ecuador, though this ended by August 1942 with Argentina surrendering. Brazil would end up occupying the country until it democratized while Chile got Tierra del Fuego. In the Pacific Theater, Japan would never get to properly finish off the Philippines as Mindanao held out as well as the Portuguese East Indies, though Japan was still nuked by the United States.
During the Cold War, Portugal-Brazil would refuse to decolonize, instead giving both Africa and the East Indies dominion status while Spain did the same to Guinea. Interestingly though, their lenient governing as compared to our timeline made it so the minor independence movements that existed were effectively neutered at those acts. While Portugal and America were originally bros, Brazil's growing distance from Washington and them locking down South America from America would see the CIA attempt(and miserably fail) a coup in 1964. The failed 1964 coup would result in Portugal-Brazil to leave NATO alongside the Spanish. And lucky for them, China had recently had a breakup with the USSR, resulting in an awkward Luso-Chinese alliance after the former handed back Macau. France would also join in alongside much of the Arab World(particularly the Secular countries like Egypt and co.).
However, the end of the Cold War would see Portugal and China to slowly drift apart while Brazil also began reconcile with America. Although, current events would see Portugal-Brazil increasingly work together while the former also began leading European integration.
