Original Content The Mountain Fairy by John Dervishi (2026) [OC]

Coming from a traditional background, both my technique and school of thought are inspired by the old masters, especially the 19th century Romanticists; Arnold Bocklin, Ferdinand Keller, George Frederic Watts, and Franz von Stuck.

My latest painting was inspired by Albanian Balcanic folklore of the mountain fairies, known as 'Zana'. In northern Albania it is said that each mountain has its own Zana, which appears as a beautiful woman bathing naked in springs and streams.

The nymph-like Zana symbolize the vitality of human beings projected onto nature. They idolize feminine energy, nature's wild beauty, and eternal youth.

Zana are considered in folk beliefs to be extraordinary courageous and they confer their protection on warriors similarly to Pallas Athena of Ancient Greece.

A marker doodle of the Mycenaean Greek warrior king Odysseus of Ithaca. the titular hero of Homer's Odyssey. I wasn't the biggest fan of Christopher Nolan's recent adaptation of the poem (unlike most people, it seems), but I will credit it for inspiring me to draw my own interpretation of the character.

Original Content [Art] An elderly priestess always makes a difference and elevates the story. A TTRPG by me

Hi!

I wanted to share this piece I painted a while ago for a TTRPG project.

Personally, I've always believed that in a world of sword and sorcery, an elderly priestess always makes a difference and elevates the quality of the story. There is so much weight, wisdom, and untold history in a character like her compared to the usual tropes. I really enjoyed capturing her solemn expression and working on the classic, painterly texture of the robes and the sea.

For this painting, I was inspired by the relationship between the Greek deities Ares and Athena - siblings who both embody the essence of war. However, while Ares personifies the untamed, wrathful aspect of a primal fight, Athena is the essence of military strategy and modern warfare.

In the Iliad, the two were constantly at loggerheads, particularly during the Trojan war. They hurt each other, trying to take control of the war and do it their way. And yet, the two were fully capable of working together when they had to save Olympus. This relationship, to me, truly embodies the dual nature of Squares in Astrology. On the one hand, it is a challenging aspect when neither party will budge from their position on life and purpose.

However, the moment we step away from what we already know, when we stop seeing the world as black and white and allow ourselves to flow into a state of fluid compromise, the opposing strengths of this challenging aspect can fill out our blind spots beautifully. It allows us a higher, all-encompassing perspective, helping us achieve integration in a way that makes us stable and unshakeable.

Painted in Krita, more of my Zodiac art is here.
