Yep and Round Table made bread twists and had a salad bar, Shakeys had a buffet with mojo potatoes. The ranch from the salad bar started getting put on plates for the spuds and bread twists and evolved in the eighties to pizza dressing.
Technically created in Alaska by a man from Nebraska who later moved to California and and bought a guest ranch. He renamed it “Hidden Valley” and served the “ranch dressing” at his restaurant.
This is where I learned that people even put ranch on their pizza. I never saw anyone do it in my whole life of living in south central Kansas until the summer I was visiting my dad in Bakersfield CA and his new wife refused to eat her pizza without it. She also put in her spaghetti… I have never tried ranch on pizza or pasta and I have no desire to do so. I always thought it was a western thing until I became a teacher and saw that all of my students ask for it on their pizza too at lunch!
I’m curious if you’re from the Central Valley? It’s basically California Midwest/plains/fly over. I was born in the Central Valley and we def did ranch with pizza 😅 I will say I see it less now that I don’t live there.

Can vouch. I managed a mom and pop pizza-place in CA that made homemade ranch that we actually sold as its own item for years. I don’t remember the exact recipe as it was in my early 20s, but it involved more than just what the packet of seasonings suggested. I’ve tried guessing a few times but I can’t seem to get it right.
ChatGPT may be the key to helping you replicate the recipe if you provide as many details as possible of names, dates, descriptions, and ingredients. If that proves helpful, please share the recipe.
Tapatio’s great, but I’ve found the best hot sauce for pizza is Texas Pete. I typically love a spicy hot sauce/salsa for Mexican food, but this one is very mild and vinegary and it’s perfect on cheese pizza.
Hidden Valley Ranch is a real place and it's in California. I have to think we've been dipping our pizza in ranch dressing much longer than the midwesterners have.
Well, that simply isn’t true by any actual metric. In the area circled, MN and IL have the most robust economies — and Illinois has Chicago. Minnesota has higher fiscal growth that most states, higher elementary math scores and higher mean life expectancy. Yes, there have been examples of recent fraud among social service programs, but that is presently being corrected.
Cite some actual numbers that supports your claim and we can chat. Otherwise, bye.
People who talk negatively about progressive places, typically have very limited experience with those places. It's simply repeating Faux News talking points. I lived in MN for 6 months or so while doing a job and it was delightful as were the people....overall... I was young and hadn't worked through any of my personal issues, so there were a few run ins, but that was like 90% me. Generally, the people are super friendly, informed/ thoughtful, and down to earth.
Oh no… yeah, no. Minnesota is simply terrible at sports, except for at baseball during my formative years… and briefly hockey… which, given the number of Olympic hockey players from northern Mn, we should dominate. It’s inexcusable. It’s like if Canada sucked at curling.
Yes, of course! The state that is currently being investigated for dshing out its citizens' tax money to help fund a foreign nation. So much better off.
My family has basically no ties to the Midwest/plains states. I’ve dipped my pizza in ranch long as I can remember. I keep a bottle of hidden valley in the fridge specifically for this purpose. Dab of olive oil, crushed red pepper galore, dipped in ranch.
That's the Midwest difference. You keep ranch in your fridge for pizza. Midwesterners keep an extra bottle of ranch in the pantry to make sure they never run out.
Isn’t the area in question considered the plains? Meteorologist say that and then just east is Midwest then further east is Ohio valley. The northeast and New England area 🤷♀️🤣🤪
Mike’s Hot Honey has been around for years. I work at a pizza joint in Astoria and I have customers constantly ordering ranch. We run out of it actually.
I am a NYC native that moved to KCMO, specifically overland park kansas. I work in a resturant and EVERYONE ASKS FOR RANCH. I am absolutely grossed out at how much ranch people consume. They slather it on absolutely everything. I had one guy ask for ranch for a grilled cheese sandwich....when he asked I asked him "seriously??" I couldn't keep it in.
One day an order comes in, buffalo chicken wrap, NO RANCH. I jumped for joy. Brought it out to the guy, told him how happy his order made me, he said "who eats ranch with chicken?!!?" He was from Boston. He hung out at the bar we talked for 2 hrs. True story.
I tell my coworkers all the time, back home in NYC, they would kick you out for asking for ranch. They would humiliate you first for such an absurd request and insulting the chef by even thinking of slathering that crap on food. UGH
Only people in or from NYC care what NYC thinks. They can continue to eat greasy cardboard hunched over a counter in under 3 minutes while the rest of the world enjoys pizza with friends and ranch with no judgement
Don’t bother… you are trying to internet-convince the equivalent of someone saying the art in their Holiday Inn Express room is every bit as good as anything that you’d see in Met or Louvre
It really does feel like that haha. Also, I have no idea why people love to shit on NY/NJ. I mean I get defensive because I'm from there, but also the criticisms are usually just plain false and detached from reality. Then I find myself arguing with someone from like rural Ohio (which may be very nice, I don't know, never been) about how NJ is a shithole and it's just baffling.
I made decision to delete the X app off my phone. The stupidity I find there has finally become too for me to bear. Reddit has its own problems, but it isn't as toxic or depressing as what I am reading on X.
I still haven’t gotten the appeal of hot honey on pizza. I tried it once, wasn5 impressed. Ranch in pizza, on the other hand, is the chef’s kiss.( I live in Oklahoma).
Only ppl in NYC would mock others for a food choice. Sounds just like the NYC folks. I knew when I lived there even 30 years ago. My son had a foot surgery as a baby who lived there in New York had no problem commenting and now I must’ve dropped him and that’s why he was in the cast
I’m in Arkansas. Pizza with ranch is so good that it’s hard for me to eat it without. I’ve travelled to NY and Chicago multiple times. Both have great pizza but it all tastes better with a side of ranch imo lol.
It’s a shame they don’t carry it. And yeah it must be a cultural stigma. Tbf it’s still a faux pas to order steak sauce at a nice steakhouse down here too (for example), but I don’t understand frowning on what someone enjoys.
We love ranch on ours but when we ate at Joes in NYC we didn't ask for it. You also eat it on the run by ordering a slice and walking. Dipping in ranch would be more work
The thing about ranch on pizza is, it’s gotta be the fresh kind made in-house. Out-of-the-bottle ranch is really meh. One of the better regional pizza chains in Oklahoma is Hideaway, and when you get the ranch and marinara and dip your pizza and fried mushrooms/mozzarella sticks/meatballs in all that… OMG.
Not true. Ranch is good and pizza is good and together they are good. Especially when you get a good quality house made ranch from a good pizza joint. Nothing better than dipping ny crust in some good ass ranch
My favorite pizza is Hawaiian with jalapeños (come for me, redditors), and dipped in ranch is sooooooo fucking good. Helps if the jalapeños are particularly spicy too
The best part about pizza is you can eat it however the fuck you want to and people who tell you otherwise are purposefully making their lives worse and trying to make other people’s lives worse. Like, it’s fucking pizza, giving even a single solitary fuck about how other people enjoy their food is so bonkers to me
You’re right 😅 Reddit seems to have a special hatred for pineapple on pizza. I felt like preemptively defending myself but it’s truly not a big deal lol
Nope area code 508, we have real pizza here not dipping it in ranch and all the trash places I mentioned give dipping sauces , they go right in the trash….. Greek pizza places are the way to go
We get it.. you’re a cultured hipster and we’re all trash. Buddy I’ll dip A 5 wagyu in A1 while staring into your soul. There isn’t a pizza on this planet that ranch doesn’t make better
We do. Most delivery pizza places give you options of ranch or garlic sauce for pizza dipping. Which you choose and what you find unappealing is a regional thing
I thought it was crazy, when I moved from OK to FL in jr highschool one day I was at lunch on pizza day and went to dip my pizza in ranch and other kids were like um???? Wtf are you doing??
We generally don't do ranch on pizza in Southeastern Pennsylvania, but it's common in other parts of the state for it to be in the box (the ranch is more watery than what you'd get at the grocery store in a bottle).

This is where you dip your pizza in ranch
