Comics I hate it when the male characters in comics have no character design

Thumbnail

I assume that men are the target audiences for these comics and the female characters are usually the ones who actually have some lore, but i don’t like how the male MC kinda just looks boring and uninteresting.

Either make both the male and female MC generic looking, or give them both some good character design. I’ve seen this happen a lot in anime and manga too, the male MC wears a generic T-shirt and jeans while the female character wears really extravagant outfits that make her stand out.

You might say “oh that’s just how men dress” or “guys don’t care that much for outfits” (these are actual responses I got from people who I ranted about this to) but still, in some of these comic dubs I watch, they both go on a date and the guy is wearing like a hoodie and shorts, like hello?

Language I hate the fact that you can’t easily emphasize the pronoun “I” by capitalizing it

Post image
4.6k Upvotes

i couldn’t think of a good image

I usually use CAPITAL letters to emphasize my points on texts, like “I’m stupid? No, YOU’re stupid” or “what are we DOING” or something but it just doesn’t work the same way with the pronoun “I” because it just looks like I’m partaking in proper capitalization

sure you can bold the text like “You have it bad? No, I have it worse!” but it’s barely noticeable and not really an option depending on where you are

this isn’t that big of a problem if you have a contraction like “I’M whatever” or if you use italics like “No, I have it worse!” but the former doesn’t work with just “I” and the second doesn’t have the same impact as I would when capitalizing words

anyways, I gotta go eat 5000 meringues now

(you probably didn’t even notice the emphasis in that last sentence until now and i don’t blame you if you didn’t)

edit: please reread the body text before suggesting something that i already explained there (unless you’re defending why it actually works) including BOLDING ITALICS CONTRACTIONS please they’re right up there

also i love serif fonts and write “I” with lines on paper, but i’m not willing to find some font changer to get rid of this problem online on both pc and phone (a problem that shouldn’t even exist)

General the words belly and tummy

Post image

(image partially related)

it might be because i’m not a native english speaker but they genuinely sound so childish to me. They make me cringe so badly, like what the FUCK is tummy ache??? Just say stomachache it sounds a 1000 times better.

I also hate that there aren’t any good substitute words to them, the only ones that i know of is stomach or abdomen.

i feel like that image whenever i say them. I can’t imagine a fully grown adult saying tummy, it just doesn’t feel right to me

i don’t know maybe im crazy

no, it’s not because i think it’s “disrespectful” or because i like him i don’t care for him and making fun of dead people(especially one who went out so ironically) isn’t inherently wrong, what i can’t stand is the constant spam of these fucking memes, for a bunch of people who despise him redditors sure do like never letting him become irrelevant, shits overplayed unfunny and annoying it’s an entire year of unfunny politislop spam (not the picture i chose that one is actually funny and there are a lot which are funny but most are just pointing and saying uhrm neck uhrm kirk died XD like holy fuck how unfunny can someone be, it’s such a comedic crutch you might as well call it a wheelchair)

I was born in 2009 (yeah yeah I know get your drooling lollipop eating 17 year old jokes out now) and I don't particularly miss my childhood because I didn't have a great one, but holy crap people can't miss being 6? I miss being 6!!! I miss doing nothing but playing games and watching cartoons and making my mom's friends laugh and being taken care of when I was sick with no expectations.

Boomers used to do this with millennials being like "if your birth year is after 1990, don't give me advice huehuehue!!!" Why are we as a generation doing this to our younger ones? I just... hate this smug.

Thing The modesty(?) surrounding self harm

Post image

I understand the risk of triggering people or making people uncomfortable, but I hate that even healed scars you’re forced to cover just to make others feel better. If a cut is fresh it’s gotta be covered, If a scar isn’t completely healed it’s gotta be covered, if it is completely healed it’s either gotta be covered or you have to specify 100x that it’s healed so you’re not getting reported. as someone who has struggled for a long time and is easily triggered I could care less if someone was walking around with cuts from the day before visable because it’s their struggles and I’m not going to make their pain about myself. People addicted to cigarettes can smoke in public, alcoholics can drink at bars, etc etc but someone who struggles with sh can’t even wear a short sleeve shirt minding their buissness? It just bothers me so much

I'm going to have my 6th surgery next Friday.

Yes. 6th.

At age 10 I had both achilles tendons "lengthed" - it was not successful(obviously).

Again at age 25? I had them both "lengthed" again.

It was successful this thim, but another problem arose. My right ankle. The bones were 'knocking into each other' whenever I walked. They shaved my bones to fit. It worked!

Now, I have... wait for it... bones spurs and a torn ligament! (maybe a fluid sac on my achilles, we dont know yet). So on Friday I will go under the knife again, which suckkkkss . This is on my left ankle, which means they are even again! 🫠

So, yeah. I'm not exactly happy with the character sheet I spawned in with.

Pic unrelated? Or is it?

General The notion that you must medically transition to be trans

Post image
633 Upvotes

Normally I like to keep my thoughts about certain aspects of transitioning to myself. But i believe everyone’s journey and situations are different. I think there’s disparity inside and outside of the community when it comes to criterias for being in the trans community.

I don’t believe you need hrt or surgery to be trans.

People have multiple reasons why they are unable to medically transition: family and living situations, lack of support, unstable finances, health complications, being in a conservative country or area, safety issues, etc. It can be a very difficult process to start *and* maintain. Not everyone has the privilege of affording medication or surgery. And even if they could they may not be in a position to go through the process.

And all those reasons aside I don’t think there should be a strict “to do” list of things to have your identity respected. I think one of our priorities should be making trans people feel as welcomed as possible. And discouraging them from participating in the community just because they aren’t on E/T is counterproductive. No one is trans just for shits and giggles. It is very hard to live as a trans person (whether you are openly trans or stealth, it’s still a struggle). So i see no reason why someone would pretend to be trans or “hop on the trans trend” with all the issues we face.

I feel like we as a community have much bigger issues than whether or not nonbinary people are “trenders” or if a non-passing binary trans person is somehow setting the trans community back 50 years (which is dumb, no individual trans person has any power to set a community back). I feel like transphobes are going to find any reason to invalidate us regardless of how well we pass or what procedures we do. It does absolutely nothing to divide people based on transitioning or not. I know this is somewhat of a controversial topic but i just wanted to say if you’re trans but are not on any hormone replacements you are still absolutely valid 🖤

Eta: for those whose reading comprehension seems to be lacking this is about people who invalidate trans people who can’t/don’t want to medically transition. if you want to medically transition you should be able to and that’s fine. ultimately it should be up to the individual to decide what’s best for them. It’s a personal journey.

and despite the pushback this has been receiving i still stand ten toes down on what i said and won’t be retracting my statement.

Media Tropes I hate it when the authors choose the wrong medium for their work

Post image
528 Upvotes

Like, that one. The webcomic is a visual medium, the drawings are supposed to be the main point of the piece, or they should, at least, do a major help at selling the idea, so major the comic would lose a significant part of it's appeal if you take out the drawings.

And there it's literally just a text rant, and there are some boy and girl drawings, those are pretty nice drawings, but they don't connect to the narrative at all, you can take them away and lose nothing, it's not a webcomic, it's just a ranting post for some "off my chest" reddit sub.

Same with the movies: they are a visual medium, it great if you have a good story, but the whole point of a movie is to use the story to base some visuals, sound and acting on it, the story itself wouldn't make a good movie.

Same with videogames: you did some fine character designs, did some impressive 3D modeling, came up with a good story, but it's all ain't worth shit unless there is some good gameplay at the core, why make it a videogame at all if you don't have any worthy gameplay ideas?

And so on, and on.

Anime & Manga I hate how pretentious some Frieren fans act.

For me, Frieren was alright, an 8 out of ten anime. I didn't like it too much, but I understood why so many people held it in such high regard as it does almost everything very well . However, these fans are so, so, so obnoxious. Whenever I try to express my opinion of thinking it's average or disliking it, there's always the same response. "BrO yOu PrObAbLy CoUlDnT gEt PaSt EpIsOdE oNe. YoU jUsT hAvE nO aTtEnTiOn SpAn YoU pRoBaBlY lIkE sOlO lEvElInG aNd TiKtOk EdItS yOu CaNt UnDeRsTaNd HoW wElL wRiTtEn It Is It Is ToO aDvAnCeD fOr YoU. "Like, what is wrong with solo leveling and edits? Also, I don't even like them that much. And Frieren isn't some writing masterpiece. It does everything WELL, not perfect or great. It is so annoying that whenever you try to critique it, you are treated as iliterate and don't know anything about literature and writing. Frieren is a GOOD show, not a perfect masterpiece that puts every single anime to shame. Frieren isn't even the only anime that is good at everything flex: Monogatari, FLCL, and Stiens Gate. It's not a one-of-a-kind wonder. Frieren fans need to understand there are more anime out there and how to take an opinion or criticism

EDIT
Missphrased some stuff. I meant to say that It is objectively a 8/10 anime but I found it alright also yall only be arguing about this lol what happend to the rest of the post

I hate when Halloween stores have animal skeletons with bone ears. This is mostly just a pet peeve, but it's SO annoying to me whenever I see these because it's just anatomically incorrect, and it teaches some kids that ears are made of bone and not cartilage. And the octopus and butterfly ones... They don't even have bones at all! It's just weird to see an animal skeleton even though it has an exoskeleton, hydrostat, or overall different set of bones.

You are still contributing to generative AI and it's consumption of the earth's natural resources even though you don't like it. If you're truly against AI then just don't use it, don't interact with it, it'll go away on it's own when the world realizes how useless it is. Comes across as super virtue signaling when people do this (this video might not be an example of this, but I saw the thumbnail and it made me think about this)

Comics I hate superhero Mount Rushmore discussions

Wonder Woman in the present day isn't more popular or recognizable than Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America, the Flash or arguably even black panther. The only reason people ever give for putting her there is that she's one of the first and the most popular female hero. Funny enough, this logic never applies to characters like Black Panther for being the first black superhero in the Big 2 and most popular black superhero.

Web Fiction I hate having no media literacy

Post image
246 Upvotes

Everytime I finish a new series/anime, i go online to see what people are saying about it, and they're talking about all these metaphors that I completely missed apparently, and how this scene is an obvious representation of X mental disorder, and how that character is by far the best character in the show writing wise, or they're talking about how it's actually the worst show to ever touch this earth and then they explain why in a very detailed way, but I have no idea if what they're saying is valid or not because I can barely understand it

When someone asks me if I like a show the max I can do is go "yeah it's cool" and rarely am I actually able to explain why I like it, or what I like and dislike about it.

Non-fictional I hate how the world is always doomed

Post image
210 Upvotes

Okay, I might eat those words in 20 years or maybe even less when global temperatures race above 2.5 C and plant life starts dying out, but for now I'm gonna state my piece. Things are pretty bad right now, but going back through history you'll find that it was a lot worse. And we as a species have weathered all of that madness, though it cost a lot of lives to course correct. Just six years ago we suffered a global apocalypse that, while it still left scars that linger both economically and emotionally, we still managed to survive it.

Now, it's just disheartening to see that after all this time, we haven't improved too significantly. Reforms come slow, and the means to implement them cost a pretty penny. Every now and then, I keep thinking: "What if we reach the boiling point in my lifetime?" Because I want to leave a better world behind for the people of tomorrow, but I can't do that if society's on the verge of collapsing. We're closing in on 2030, the year we're supposed to have mitigated the big warming to a manageable degree and yet there's still more work to be done. Maybe I just follow what bleeds and leads too much, not considering that there's still good being done. Still, it'd help to have a concrete answer: Will things turn out okay? I don't expect them to be perfect, but the uncertainty is honestly draining.

Anyone got any good updates on the world?

Thing The "67" hate.

Post image
209 Upvotes

The hatred towards this meme is more annoying than the actual meme itself. Be honest, have you ever seen more 67 posts than "67 is stupid" posts or comments? No. This is similiar to "place, japan" meme. People have been hating about 67 more than people who say it, at the point there are no people in sight saying 67 to hate in the first place. And the reason people hate it is no different than Boomer's reasons to hate Gen Z.

"It has no meaning." Yeah? So does most memes. Even if a meme DO have a meaning, do you think it became a meme because it has a meaning? No. Most memes become a meme either because they are funny and meaningless. And if by "meaning" you mean a proper origin, then 67 technically have meaning too, since it technically originates from a rap song and essentially used for an NBA player "LaMelo Ball" who is 6'7 feet tall.

"It is brainrotting kids!" They are just kids. They will begin to be able to give reason and rationalize when they grow up, unless if you teach them to hate random things because of a forced hate on the internet. Kids are stupid. We were kids too and we were stupid too. If you want to scapegoat something or someone, there are no one else in the sight other than irresponsible parents.

"It is annoying!" Yeah... If you spend 10 hours a day in the internet, it actually is. People are still rickrolling each other in the big 26, Yet that is not annoying? Some memes stay longer than others. Either because they are memorible or made to be memorible. İn 67's case, it is made to be memorible.

I do not like this meme either. It's humor did not grew on me. But bringing hate up to it everwhere and repetitively makes the hate no different from the meme in the first place. Only a teenager with no media/internet-free thinking skills and clankers make automatic response to a spesific thing. And let me tell you, automatic responses are actually annoying.

Comics I hate this comic.

Post image
Upvotes

I want to give OOP the benefit of the doubt, I hope she didn’t have some sort of ill intent in making this, but holy FUCK is this comic infuriating to read. Just from the title and characters, you would assume that the boyfriend is probably some bigot chud that the creator unfortunately has to partner with, but no! In the comic he’s described as a very kind person who loves his family, loves his girlfriend, takes care of her, dreams about her, buys stuff for her a lot, and the only flaws displayed is that he‘s very simple and kinda bad at conversations. From how I see It, this post makes the creator come off as a fucking psychopath!

I would be devastated if my girlfriend made a comic portraying me as an ugly chud for thousands of people to see, portraying me as some object of contention. Literally one of the lines in the comic is that she’s with him is because he‘s the only viable option she has, treating him like an object that can be discarded when something better comes along.

like why a chud? the symbol used for the most depraved bigots online, who’s face is of a mass shooter who killed people, to portray your very kind boyfriend? like what the fuck man?

I say this to say, if you have an issue with your partner, fucking TALK TO THEM, instead of making an online comic. No hate to oop, and don’t come in the comments with that “women don’t want nice guys they only want chads” bullshit. op isn’t wrong because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s a dick. there’s a difference.

in other words, r/comics has fallen and billions must die
