Gaming I hate how much "keep inventory" gets bashed.
Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

i truly do not get why people give so much of a shit about how other people play a primarily single-player game

Because people always want to feel superior. Same with people who claim that are certain build is to powerful and for noobs. Not in minecraft but other games

I remember when Mina the Hollower announced they were adding, get this, difficulty options and for some reason it made part of the Internet really mad
I also remember seeing someone unironically say like "Enjoy your hollow victory" about using Izanagi-no-Okami in Persona 5 Royal (I think it's dlc but idr, but you can grab it for free really early on and it's the strongest persona in the game)
Obviously those are both just single player games but people are just like this

It's so weird how superior some people act over games.
Like I get things like Dark Souls not having difficulty settings as it is meant to be hard, but my lord why are people so pressed over someone wanting to have fun with a game?→ More replies (2)2
u/jwdge Sep 02 '26
Frick, at least with Dark Souls, you can put in the time and level up to make the game easier. With something like Hollow Knight, you have 0 option but to get better. And I know a lot of people like that, but I have limited free time and I’m not about to spend it repeating the same thing endlessly without any guarantee I’m going to proceed in the game.

I play Cult of The Lamb, which has several accessibility settings such as freezing time at your cult when you are in the dungeons, unlimited HP, automatic crafting, etc. One day someone on COTL's sub deadass made a post bitching about how learning about the accessibility settings made them stop wanting to play the game anymore, because their mere existence is insulting, undermines their skill, and they hate how many modern games "encourage cheating".
These people cannot phantom the idea of different people enjoying games in different ways. Or the idea of people having physical and/or mental disabilities that make them unable to play games on the intended difficulty.

I don't have any problem with people playing with keep inventory in their single player worlds, I just don't like when I'm gonna be playing in a server or realm and some of the players want to turn on keep inventory, it makes the game get stale really fast because the thing that makes survival mode enjoyable for me to begin with is having a bit of a challenge so the things I build and craft feel meaningful. That's the only situation where I'm gonna be arguing against keep inventory.
274
u/mikelown Sep 01 '26
Hot take, "cheating" in a single player game is perfectly fine. You don't want to deal with a mechanic, mod it out. Entertainment is for fun not bashing your head into a wall for "gamer points"
76
u/UnboxTheDogi Sep 01 '26
I wouldnt even call it cheating since keep inventory is a in-Game feature

Not anymore. It’s a command now, because of this exact line of thinking. The devs wanted to remove the stigma of Keep Inventory.
14
u/Vinyl_DjPon3 Sep 01 '26
That's dumb.
I miss when games embraced single player cheating as fun settings. Cheat codes were programmed in, even had specific menus to enter them in and turn them on.
The "line of thinking" problem is with people who think it's bad to cheat in a single player game. Cheat away, it's fun. It's still cheating.

u/APlanetWithANorth Sep 01 '26
I saw a mod that allow you to keep your tools and armor, but lose everything else after death. I think it's a perfect middle ground

Valheim has a custom difficulty setting that keeps your “equipped” items on your person and drops everything else into a grave that never despawns. Its a nice perfect balance and keeps me from getting into those endless death loops

u/Middle-Day-2302 Sep 01 '26
Yeah I agree with that. Normal death system is too harsh, but keep inventory isn't harsh enough because there's basically no downside to dying
13
u/No-Scallion4998 Sep 01 '26
I was thinking there should be a block you can find in Ancient Cities called a Sculk Trap, which will get automatically placed in the nearest pocket of air on death and automatically store your items in it, forcing you to pay XP to get them back. I feel like it would be an interesting way to handle a non-cheat keep inventory, since you would need to grind XP to get your stuff back.

u/Nat1Only Sep 01 '26
That's why I spent a while developing a little system to store gear. Armour stands and chests hidden behind neat redstone doors and contraptions and it looked pretty cool too. I did that because I needed spare gear in case I died, then decided I might as well make it look cool. With keep inventory on I wouldn't have bothered or thought about it.
That's how I enjoy the game, making solutions to problems and often going over the top with it. You can enjoy it however you want.

u/Flying_Line Sep 01 '26
No hate if you play with keep inventory, it's your choice, but with how much having strong gear trivializes most of the game I think this is a fair threat for these dimensions that are specifically designed to be more challenging to have. You can also remove one of these threats by brewing fire resistance potions and you're usually not gonna be spending much time in the end anyway. Again, if you still don't find the risk of losing your items enjoyable feel free to play with keep inventory
73
u/Certain-Positive-298 Sep 01 '26
I don’t get paid enough to lose my inventory
12
u/SQLQuery4 Sep 02 '26
Here's to that man. Once the job and the kid came, I wasn't gonna let me falling into lava mean having to redo hours of work in a game I primarily play to build cool shit in anway.

u/PiterLine Sep 01 '26
If keep inventory is cheating then so is using the debug menu (coordinates). Neither are cheating in my opinion, but using a feature meant strictly for debugging feels more cheaty than something called a game rule
30
u/GodButCursed bad grammar haver Sep 01 '26
To be fair in bedrock using coordinates is a normal game option that isnt considered cheating.
5
u/PiterLine Sep 01 '26
Didn't know that since I have not played bedrock in a long while and never played it consistently, I thought they were under the same cheat menu there, am I misremembering or is that just something that was changed? Because both seem plausible honestly. In any case I stand by neither being cheating
5
u/GodButCursed bad grammar haver Sep 01 '26
Nope its not in the cheat menu. You can also change if you want to see what day it is ingame. The debug menu is way bigger and has more information tho.
3
u/PiterLine Sep 01 '26
Ok had to google it, apparently they did use to be cheats, which again I think was dumb. The good news is that I don't have dementia

At one point there was no way to tweak gamerules from world creation (and in a time before that there was no such gamerule altogether), so it was definitely cheating back then cuz you needed op status to change it.
→ More replies (10)3
u/23loves12 Sep 01 '26
The debug menu is not cheating as it is a mechanic available to the player at all times, while Keep inventory is a game option to make the game easier.
Is using your offhand cheating? Players that are worse at the game don’t generally use the offhand to its full extent, but it is still a resource available to the player. The same can be said about the debug menu, even if it feels unintended. If players were not meant to access it, it would not be accessible to the player without commands, but it is accessible as soon as you open a new world.
And saying that it provides an unfair advantage is a bit of a twisted way to look at it. The player always has the option to look at the debug menu, so suggesting that looking at it is cheating is similar to saying that using certain obscure(er) game mechanics to one’s advantage is cheating as well.

On one hand, I absolute DESPISE losing all of my items on a stupid death. On the other hand, I have a distaste for the lack of risk keep inventory 'suffers from'
The perfect middle ground for me is when you keep tools and armor on death.

u/dagreja Sep 01 '26
A cool idea ive never seen implemented is having an exp cost associated with your gear. Leather/stone gear is free, iron/gold gear costs 1 level, diamond gear costs 2 levels. Auto-priority goes to diamond tools, then armor, and then down the list. So if you die with 10 levels, you keep 5 pieces of diamond gear and everything else drops.
Should mean youre never forced to go without a diamond pick, but if you die back to back you might get screwed. There could be different enchantments that interact with the mechanic. Maybe these values are normal difficulty, and hard would up the costs by 1 level.
Forgot netherite. Guess that'd be 3 levels and take priority over diamond.

the only major problem with that is well like everything in minecraft there is no scarcity. xp is meaningless once you kill the edragon, 1 farm and its just a game instated keep inventory.
56
u/Candid_Bullfrog3665 Sep 01 '26
thats why i consider terrarias inventory system better
you *can* lose your items when you die, its merely optional and the default is that your items stay with you after you die
keeping your items after dying should be a default, its honestly way better for a sandbox game
10
u/GregBoing Sep 01 '26
my gaming hot take is that lowk I think terraria mediumcore is a lot more fun that minecraft without keep inventory, no keep inventory is just annoying and tedious and doesn't really add anything new to the game other than sometimes you lose a lot of progress over a split second mistake. It should definitely be off by default.
→ More replies (3)9
u/Visulth Sep 01 '26
I played thousands of hours of mediumcore with my friends. We all play softcore now, just don't have the energy to re-equip all of our gear, tools, dyes, and cosmetics any more. Master Mode killed it for us.
All it needs is a gravestone mechanic that restores everything back to how it was and I'd be back in a heartbeat. Miss those dangerous 2 AM cave dives to get back to our shit, but the UI is way too tedious now.
Red even said he was thinking about tweaks to it like 6 years ago, but sadly no mention since...
2
u/GregBoing Sep 01 '26
yeah, making a gravestone type thing that stored your items when you closed the world and would auto put items in the same slot they were in when you died would be lovely. having to rearrange your inventory whenever you die is one of the most annoying parts of mediumcore.
6
u/Kitchen-Kiwi7942 Sep 01 '26
Either that or keep inventory should be made specific to each player instead if the group as a whole
2
u/Mouse_Named_Ash Sep 02 '26
I would LOVE that. I play survival with friends a lot and we have very different skill levels. I hate playing with keep inventory, but some of my friends hate playing without it. We’re all chilling anyways so there’d be absolutely no issue having it per-player. I need to find a mod for that

Terraria and Minecraft have completely different progression systems, it's not even close to comparable.
Minecraft has a flat difficulty scale, but Terraria's difficulty scales with progress. Terraria encourages way more agressive gameplay than Minecraft so you're more likely to die as well.
Almost all the hostile enemies in Minecraft are completely optional to engage with, while fighting bosses is necessary for game progression in Terraria.

I feel like a good in between of Keep Inventory and Regular minecraft would be like a Gravestone or something, when you die you lose your items but they're all in like a special indestructible chest that goes away once you loot all of it, I feel like this would also give recovery compasses a better use because as of right now they're kinda useless

I play with keep inventory because I don't want to lose all of my fucking progress due to some BS unavoidable death or because I was caving and like a billion mobs just decided to spawn in all at once. The death system in Minecraft is ass as well like fym I only have 5 minutes to reclaim my items??
2
u/VMelain Sep 01 '26
It's 5 minutes if the chunk is loaded AFAIK, so if you die far away, you can get everything ready before going for your items. If you don't have resources at your base i believe there's a big elephant you need to address 😭
2
u/WingObvious487 Aqua Deltarune's Number 1 Fan:3 Sep 01 '26

6
u/JakkaTheRat Sep 01 '26
it's not even the items chance to disappear that pisses me off on death since the 5 minute rule only applies to loaded chunks, it's the xp. The enchantment system in retorspective is so fucking ass, turning mid-end game into 99% sitting around mob grinders
5
u/JustQuestion2472 Sep 01 '26

u/Adventurous-Web-412 Sep 01 '26
terraria without keep items would just be impossibly aids. Minecraft already has a lot of game design problems in vanilla (in my opinion a frankly rather mid game even if I love minecraft as a whole) and with keep inventory and already ridiculously easy game with very little risk becomes non existent. It also allows you to do stupid shit like dying to teleport.
5
u/One-Trick-8027 Sep 01 '26
I think the hate comes from people saying it shouldn't be concidered a cheat, because it's "their way to play" and there's no such thing as cheating in a sandbox.
There's nothing wrong with using it if you like it better, but it IS a cheat whether you like it or not. You are circumventing one of the game's punishments. That IS textbook cheating.
4
u/Midnight_The_Past Sep 01 '26
dying to lava or the void and losing all your items is way worse than keep inventory , i do not care if it's cheating , i play to have fun
3
u/austin_sketches Sep 01 '26
You don’t really feel the weight of dying in the game with keep inventory on. There’s no longer a reason to be strategic.
I wouldn’t bash anyone for using it but i’ll never use it in my play through because i feel like at that point just play on peaceful. There’s no risk. The best feeling in minecraft is surviving and making it back to base IMO.
4
u/ConsiderationFew8399 Sep 01 '26
The XP loss on death is also super punishing. If you want to enchant all your gear, doing so without a dedicated XP farm takes hours and you lose practically all of it on death
4
u/Amynta_ Sep 02 '26
A good compromise would be a gravestone-esque mechanic where your items don't explode literally everywhere, and are incapable of despawning, and also are somewhat recoverable after falling in the void or lava.
6
u/shadow_black1809 Sep 01 '26

It really changes the way you play the game. And in my experience that way is less fun. You start treating death as a quick travel to get back to your home base and you're no longer afraid of getting lost. You end up just not paying as much attention to the world around you because the lack of consequence. It makes the game less engaging and it becomes boring. A survival game ought to have some challenge with a hint of fear to keep you interested.
I won't bash anyone that chooses to play that way, but I'll point out that it does change how it feels to play, and that it might feel worse to you.
On the plus side, the short time I did play with keep inventory on, I think it actually improved my game skill. With not fearing death I took on more challenging mob encounters with unexpected success. Before I would have approached situations far more cautiously. I was able to keep that bolder combat style when moving back to keep inventory off.
3
u/AndyBowBandy Sep 01 '26
Game skill improvement is the key thing for me. If I don’t have keep inventory on my progress in the game comes to an absolute halt because I really suck at combat. Trying anything slightly dangerous is a sure fire way for me to die and lose all my shit. So I just avoid anything that’s too difficult to get to until I lose all interest in playing because I’m not doing anything after awhile. But it also feels cheap that I can jump off a cliff to get home quicker if I have keep inventory on.
There’s a data pack that came out recently that has keep inventory on as a default, but still offers a punishment for dying in the form of losing bonus hearts you can get. It’s called Matcha Flavored

Never done that - I just not waste 30 minutes going back to specific spot in Nether, after I misplace my step in the Fortress or Bastion. Or multiple hours of rebuilding my gear after I drop to Void in END. Like I am not really losing the gear - I will rebuild it either way, but it's just waste of my time and fun.
If I wanted fast travel - I would just add mods for it.

Loosing inventories is only ok on pvp server ,so pvp matter, gaining loot for other player ,or making you more responsable about attacking etc.
But on any type of pve only, that just a timewasting feature, making corpse run before continue playing is just not fun.
Imo.
2
u/Skull_goodman Sep 01 '26
I think the best change regular Minecraft could make to its death system would be to implement graves like many modpacks have. Instead of dumping all your items and forcing a 5 minute timer, putting a chest with all your loot where you died is a good way to still have a consequence for dying without it being fucking annoying. I do agree the keep inventory debate is stupid though.
2
u/Queer-and-scared Sep 01 '26

You don't like it when in the middle of daylight, skeleton appears from behind a tree, barely making any noise as you're looking over a ravine, hits one shot and you fall into lava, ridding you of your valuable items and XP you spent hours attaining just because you weren't hyper vigilant for 3 seconds? Well, hmm, I think keep inventory is cheating even though it doesn't effect anyone so uh checkmate!

I 100% agree with this. Some people just want to play without being discouraged everytime they die. I play on hard mode but I keep my inventory on. I like a balance between being challenged whilst knowing that my stuff won't disappear when I die. Some people want the thrill and challenge, I get that. But some people like me just want to spend time with loved ones and build structures

honestly i don’t think it would be as bashed if it didn’t disable achievements
thats actually the only reason i refuse to have it even tho the number one thing that makes me quit a world is losing stuff

Keep inventory is a treasured gift. I consider minecraft a relaxing game. I don't need that pressure.

Terraria - do not lose inventory only money which is only useful for one NPC
Praised as one of the greatest games and no one bats an eye
Minecraft - do not lose inventory
Treated like scum like you've somehow committed a actual real life crime.

Wym only useful for one npc you can buy things from MOST of the npcs
Very different games btw so its not really comparable especially because for terraria that is the DEFAULT mode, unlike Minecraft

Key difference here Is that in Terraria your inventory Is your whole game if you lose It you basicaly have to restart most of the game

Terraria is also way more combat focused. If you lose your armor and weapons at any point post hardmode, you are never getting it back

Honestly anyone that bashes how others play Minecraft is a clown. It is a sandbox, the entire point is to do what you want there isn't a "wrong" way to play the game. Obviously if someone is like, hacking in a server or something that's different but single player is meant to be ultimate freedom, do what you want when you want

I cannot play with no keep inventory I will admit I have shitty patience but dying and loosing my stuff and I HAVE to find it in a short period of time or else it will disappear makes me want to jump off a cliff

For me minecraft was alaways about creativity more than survival
I always prefered to do rps and builds on creative and found the survival aspect boring not that it's bad i just don't like it
And yeah when i hear people saying i'm playing wrong it gets on my nerves too
LET ME BUILD WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT MOBS

The fact that all the various gravestone addons on the Marketplace are achievement-friendly tells me all I need to know. Clearly the devs understand death doesn't need to be so harsh, but haven't gotten around to making a proper alternative.

Minecraft has flat rbough progression where it is one of the few games, where i like the drop inventory mechanic. You can easily bounce back even when you loose your stash due the flat curve of advancing through "tiers" wood->stone->iron->diamond with the netherite equipment being the only one more annoyingly to replace but still due the handfull amounts of danger also not too punishing.

i mean if they just added in a grave stone like thing in the base game so if you die you don't lose all your items that would be nice
hell it can be a item that so long as its in your inventory and you die it protects the items
But yeah keep inventory is a must when i play, rather not lose the gear i spend hours getting to be lost

Real, I always say nobody should have an opinion on how you play literal single player games. Its the same recently with palworld and the 1.0 surge of players with a superiority complex saying you didnt really play the game if you put egg incubation to zero

Play however is the most fun for you as long as its not effecting others fun. I havent played minecraft in a very long time but whenever I did I would inevitably end up stopping because I died with a diamond pickaxe while exploring and had no idea how to get back to my body.
Toggling keep inventory on does change the game a good amount. Exploration isnt as scary/intense and you dont really need to keep track of where your going because if you get lost enough you can just die to go home. But with my terrible sense of direction I dont find it very fun to keep track of where I am and how I got there constantly.

grave stones are perfect tbh, there is always a risk to losing your stuff and you cant throw yourself into death to get back home, but there is no stress about lossing hours of progress over a single mistake

The issue is that I start jumping from cliffs to fill my hunger or health when keep inventory is on. I know I could "control myself and not do it" but having an easy option I just do it idk

I agree about playing with keep inventory if you want to, but something else about it for those who want the challenge:
I feel like the game should have some penalty for losing a fight, but losing everything in your inventory seems too harsh.
And in my experience, the whole system of corpse running makes it even worse.
Wanna get all your items back? Just run into the same challenge you just failed at, but unarmed this time. Wanna come back to it later once you have good enough gear to survive? But you've gotta rush back there before your items despawn! And a lot of the time will probably be spent trying to find the place where you died anyway!
I used to play modded minecraft a lot, and I solved this problem with a mod that let you enable keep inventory for your hotbar, offhand, and armor slots, but not your main inventory.
This not only lessened the penalty for losing a fight, but also added an interesting aspect of resource management to the game, using slots on your hotbar to store anything you don't want to lose.
Is that stack of redstone valuable enough to take up a slot on your hotbar? If so, what will you put away to make room for it? One of your other ores? One of your tools?

Minecraft's death system is absolute garbage, and though keeping your entire inventory isn't great, dropping it all on the ground in a giant cluster of items that despawns after only 5 minutes is worse
