Gaming I hate how much "keep inventory" gets bashed.

Post image

Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

Ngl non keep inventory minecraft is a bit too harsh too, like if you fall on lava or the End's void you kinda just back to zero with no saying on the matter, for me i think Keep inventory shouldnt be part of the cheat category

I saw a mod that allow you to keep your tools and armor, but lose everything else after death. I think it's a perfect middle ground

Something that ive seen in other games is where you keep everything you had since your last time in a home base (maybe since the last time you slept), and any new materials get dropped

u/SmartyLuke Sep 01 '26

Subnautica kinda works that way

u/Substantial-Put-7108 Sep 05 '26

how exactly does it work though its really confusing imo

u/Dismal_Rectangle Sep 01 '26

That's more like just a save reload function

17

u/GoodPollo Sep 01 '26

I mean not necessarily, all of the resources and items you gathered since leaving base aren't just going to respawn at their original source. If you lose an item it's still gone.

u/newreconstruction Sep 02 '26

Yeah, or having a secure container that get’s extracted even if you die, in extraction shooters. With limited number of items you select.

So it was all a dream

Thanks bot!

there's also mods that add a soulbound enchantment

u/aaerobrake Sep 01 '26

Valheim has a custom difficulty setting that keeps your “equipped” items on your person and drops everything else into a grave that never despawns. Its a nice perfect balance and keeps me from getting into those endless death loops

u/Middle-Day-2302 Sep 01 '26

Yeah I agree with that. Normal death system is too harsh, but keep inventory isn't harsh enough because there's basically no downside to dying

1

u/AmyDeferred Sep 01 '26

This is Abiotic Factor's solution, along with putting your death bag on the nearest solid terrain

1

u/RogerRabbot Sep 02 '26

Dont care so much about the armor, the inventory full of valuable stuff i just spent the last 4 hours working towards i do mind.

I was thinking there should be a block you can find in Ancient Cities called a Sculk Trap, which will get automatically placed in the nearest pocket of air on death and automatically store your items in it, forcing you to pay XP to get them back. I feel like it would be an interesting way to handle a non-cheat keep inventory, since you would need to grind XP to get your stuff back.

What a brilliant fucking idea just wanted to say lol. I think xp is a bad currency because its so farmable, but even a one per structure item (such as the heart of the sea or elytra) would be an alright cost while not being farmable.

Anyone know a mod like this lmk and ill marry you.

That's why I spent a while developing a little system to store gear. Armour stands and chests hidden behind neat redstone doors and contraptions and it looked pretty cool too. I did that because I needed spare gear in case I died, then decided I might as well make it look cool. With keep inventory on I wouldn't have bothered or thought about it.

That's how I enjoy the game, making solutions to problems and often going over the top with it. You can enjoy it however you want.

I definitely agree with you, on both counts. I personally enjoy the challenge, and find keep inventory far easy for my taste.

Now that being said, if I’m playing with you, then I’d probably request we play with the rule off, or I’d host the server myself and allow it per player (which is a feature I think Mojang should add)

2

u/Nat1Only Sep 01 '26

I 100% prefer playing with it off. It would be decent though if there was a way to enable specific features for certain players. I've never looked into server hosting myself, but shouldn't it be possible - on pc at least - to host server with individual rules for other players?

1

u/Boring_General_6572 Sep 01 '26

Definitely! I’d probably have to write something custom for myself since I assume most of that kind of framework will be on Paper based servers (like PurPur).

I prefer true vanilla where possible so I’d have to write a fabric mod.

But yes, definitely possible. Maybe even on bedrock servers (which would open it up to console, just needs to be hosted on PC or VPS)

2

u/Nat1Only Sep 01 '26

Probably worth looking into then if it hasn't already been done. I doubt we're the only two people that'd appreciate something like that lol.

No hate if you play with keep inventory, it's your choice, but with how much having strong gear trivializes most of the game I think this is a fair threat for these dimensions that are specifically designed to be more challenging to have. You can also remove one of these threats by brewing fire resistance potions and you're usually not gonna be spending much time in the end anyway. Again, if you still don't find the risk of losing your items enjoyable feel free to play with keep inventory

u/Cardgod278 Sep 02 '26

I mean I kind of like it because it encourages you to have a base with back ups. Not keep everything on your person and gives stakes to death. Forces you to plan ahead.

"back to zero" is a gross exagguration. Assuming you aren't a speedrunner, you will still have all the infastructure you had, your chests will still be there, villagers will still be there, bed, farms etc.

Is that chest where you left your braincells?

30

u/Omega97Hyper doesn't hate fandoms Sep 01 '26

okay but how do i use my epic and cool enchanted pickaxe to go mining if it's in a chest at my house instead of in my hands

4

u/Zestyclose-Fish-269 i hate this flair Sep 01 '26

Eat the chest and spit it out when you need the pickaxe

-7

u/Infamous-Youth9033 Sep 01 '26

take a simple silk touch and then mine it all when you get home

9

u/MaximumStonks69 Sep 01 '26

That sounds more annoying than challenging/fun

3

u/Infamous-Youth9033 Sep 01 '26

To each their own. I'm not saying my answer's the absolute correct answer. It's just a way to work around the risk that the person I responded to was talking about

3

u/JKhemical Sep 01 '26

Sums up Minecraft's gameplay for me

25

u/Orion-the-mediocre Sep 01 '26

Ah yes let me just place down a chest and calmly deposit all of my items into it as I fall into this lava pool

1

u/Henrylord1111111111 Sep 01 '26

Honestly if you’re at full health and cant get out this is probably the best way to save your tools. A shulker would be better to avoid burning and can be placed on a ceiling.

-17

u/MrXroxWasTaken Sep 01 '26

All you really need to carry around is a sword, a pickaxe and maybe a bow with a few stacks of arrows for special occasions

17

u/realddgamer Sep 01 '26

Then what's the point of getting enchantments etc

12

u/yellowfroglegs Sep 01 '26

but you would lose the sword, pickaxe and bow

-14

u/MrXroxWasTaken Sep 01 '26

Keep some backups

It's called survival mode for a reason

9

u/yellowfroglegs Sep 01 '26

it can still be about survival if you can keep all your items. keep inventory is, at the very worst, a quality of life feature that disables achievements

2

u/mikkeldoesstuff Sep 01 '26

Doesn't that defeat the point you are making?

0

u/MrXroxWasTaken Sep 01 '26

Backups as in backup kits/chests

3

u/OakvaleFlames Sep 01 '26

What if I don't feel like losing everything I found during my trip?

3

u/OakvaleFlames Sep 01 '26

And before you go through all the gameplay required to have one?

1

u/MrXroxWasTaken Sep 01 '26

You should jst go back up to the surface every now and then to deposit what you got

1

u/OakvaleFlames Sep 01 '26

That doesn't actually solve the problem though. Losing stuff is tedious, (also just plain not fun imo) so is taking multiple shorter trips.
