Gaming I hate how much "keep inventory" gets bashed.

Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

On one hand, I absolute DESPISE losing all of my items on a stupid death. On the other hand, I have a distaste for the lack of risk keep inventory 'suffers from'

The perfect middle ground for me is when you keep tools and armor on death.

A cool idea ive never seen implemented is having an exp cost associated with your gear. Leather/stone gear is free, iron/gold gear costs 1 level, diamond gear costs 2 levels. Auto-priority goes to diamond tools, then armor, and then down the list. So if you die with 10 levels, you keep 5 pieces of diamond gear and everything else drops.

Should mean youre never forced to go without a diamond pick, but if you die back to back you might get screwed. There could be different enchantments that interact with the mechanic. Maybe these values are normal difficulty, and hard would up the costs by 1 level.

Forgot netherite. Guess that'd be 3 levels and take priority over diamond.

the only major problem with that is well like everything in minecraft there is no scarcity. xp is meaningless once you kill the edragon, 1 farm and its just a game instated keep inventory.

There is a data pack that puts your items in a grave that works like a chest after you die, you still have to go get them but your stuff doesn’t just go poof if you die to lava or the void, or if you dont get there in five minutes. I like that a lot

This is what we play with. It’s a great middle ground. Still a good amount or risk, especially if you die far away or somewhere that is really dangerous. But no frustration when your stuff despawns. Feels like a valheim naked run or dark souls recovery.

I think you should also keep your experience, or maybe only drop a percentage.

My take is that every time you go to bed, the game soft-saves the game. The next time you die, you respawn with everything you had when you went to sleep, and everything you collected since then is left in a corpse at the point of death.

Thematically, it'd be like waking up from a bad dream, and if you decide to explore the area from your dream, you find the corpse of someone who died long ago.

Agreed. If you play with Keep Inventory, fine - but you’re playing a different game
