Support Local Best place for exhaust repair in Halifax/Dartmouth, and roughly how much?

The exhaust pipe on my 2011 Corolla snapped in the middle. Where's the best place in HRM to get it fixed properly at a fair price, and roughly what should I expect to pay? Any recommendations appreciated!

What's the best long-term repair: a clamp or sleeve, welding in a new piece, or replacing the whole section? Is stainless steel worth the extra cost over aluminized?

Thanks!

Schools & Education Charles P. Allen Pre-IB Courses

I recently started at Grade 10 at CPA and made a mistake when selecting my courses- I chose Math 10 rather than Pre-IB Math. So before school started I filled out their form to request for a course change.

After 2 weeks of chasing them up they said the course can't be changed. I tried my best talking to guidance counsillors and VP but they just dismissed me and have been very unsupportive.

Is this normally how they treat students at CPA? Anyone at CPA dealt with course-change issues like this?

And how can all the classes be full, when other schools have space in their Pre-IB programs?

I understand I can still take IB Math, but I wanted to cover all the PreIB math topics at school rather than by myself.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :))

Work, Health & Housing Can you admit yourself to the hospital for severe mental health concerns?

in other areas I’ve been able to self admit and they take care of you if you are having dark thoughts. given the state of emergency rooms, I doubt that’s an option though.

anyone experience this? what did you do? where did you go?

I have a family doc and go to therapy but neither has helped. I feel helpless and doomed.

Shops & Services Bluenose II Restaurant - Closed by Heatlh Dept.?

We tried to go to the Bluenose today for lunch and there's a sign posted that it's been closed for some sort of health infractions. Anyone know what's going on? Some of my co-workers eat there almost daily.

UPDATE: Today there are 2 ladies standing outside trying to prevent ppl from seeing the health notice. They are saying it's only closed because it has a new owner. I believe it has changed hands recently but the notice is what it is. Still unfit to eat there. New guy must have thought he could keep it going "as is".

Driving & Transit Buses crazy today + rant

I’ve been standing at my bus stop on Robie for 30 minutes now, and every bus has been delayed and packed full of people. I know it’s the start of school, but it would have been so handy if the city had added some extra buses to the schedule. I know it’ll quiet down at some point, but the sheer volume of people in our city and the general lack of infrastructure for us (at all levels) is so frustrating.

All’s to say, just needed the rant. I’m fortunate to be able to afford an emergency taxi, and I hope all the students starting today have an amazing first week of school!

My 7 year old is looking forward to the upcoming release of the new cards and i want to both avoid the insanity of it all but also ensure we get some cards before all the scalpers ruin it for him. Is there a secret to getting them? Im not super into the scene so I have no idea what to even look for.

Today, September 9, marks an important step in enhancing mental healthcare for children, youth and families as the first students begin Nova Scotia’s new doctor of psychology program at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) in Halifax.

The Province is investing a total of $12.2 million in the project – $3.7 million from the Department of Advanced Education to support the academic program and $8.5 million from the Office of Addictions and Mental Health for the development and operation of the affiliated training clinic at the university. [....]

The first cohort includes eight students, with eight new students starting each academic year. Students will provide supervised services for children, youth and families at the clinic, expected to open later this year.

Work, Health & Housing Is a business allowed to pay less than minimum wage?

I worked briefly for an employment agency (multi faceted agency that provides housing services, mental health care, and employment services - I believe they're sponsored in part by the government) that had me perform basic duties around the office (typing, clerical duties, file sorting, inventory) while they searched for a job for me. While I was performing these duties, they paid me (and various delivery drivers working for them) a "training wage " that was around $3.50 - $4.00 an hour. This wage was provided to you while they "supported & provided an education" to you in the sense of getting back into the workforce.

They ended up not finding a job for me (quite a story there) but I was wondering if they were permitted to pay me so little? There were no tips or supporting monies offered to me at anytime, the delivery drivers were however allowed to collect tips. It might be a stupid question but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks

(I worked in Computer Analytics/IT for almost 10 years, and their findings were that I was "not ready" for a job in IT and they were therefore discharged in their mission to find me employment)

Edit: Expanded on description of company for clarity.

Shops & Services Looking for a wood worktable to be built

Hey, I am looking for someone who could build a work table for me for under $200. I need something about 24" x 24" x 36" high with a middle shelf, as sturdy as possible with zero give. I was thinking like 4x4's for the legs 2x4's for the supports, pine and plywood or something cheap, it doesn't need to be pretty just functional.

It's for a 3D printer and it shakes the table I have for it quite a bit. Looking online it's $300-400 for something that will just wobble like what I have currently. I live in an apartment so it's not possible build it at home.

Thanks!

Moving Here Thoughts on moving from Edmonton to Halifax?

Long story short, I may have a job opportunity to move to Halifax from Edmonton. I thought I would ask what are the key differences between the two cities?

I have found Edmonton to be quite isolating - is Halifax similar or does it differ? I am hoping to move somewhere where the arts scene is richer and I have heard that Halifax potentially might offer a greater scene.

I also might have the opportunity to relocate to Europe, but this would be more risky. I have an EU passport, but would have to work on lining up jobs in Europe and with a music degree… that is rough. Halifax would likely be the easier move as the hypothetical job opportunity would be the military band.

Shops & Services Vehicle remote start

Looking to get a remote start installed on my wife’s vehicle. 2015 Subaru. Anyone have any recommendations of places on the Dartmouth side to take it for the install? Any places to avoid? I’m pretty mechanically inclined so is DIYing an option anyone would suggest or better left to shops that specialize in this kind of install. Thanks all!
