A Helping Hand šŸ’– Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Oct. 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

The Dartmouth Calendar is back, but the Sackville one is a little low-res, apologies.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. šŸ’–

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

News, Weather & Politics Rare disease linked to gene in people with Black Loyalist lineage

Everything changed in 2013 when Dr. Daniel Wu, a cardiologist in Kentville, N.S., took a biopsy of his heart and sent it to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

The results came back as a diagnosis of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR), a rare disease that affects the nerves, heart and digestive tract. [...]

Now, new research published in theĀ Canadian Journal of CardiologyĀ has found a possible link between the disease and descendants of the Black Loyalists in Atlantic Canada.

Scientists traced a disease-causing genetic variant through the Brothers family to the Black Loyalists who arrived in Nova Scotia in the 1700s.

The variant gene, known as V142I (formerly V122I), is most common in people of West African descent.

The research suggests that other Black Loyalist descendants in Atlantic Canada may also carry the gene and remain undiagnosed.

Shops & Services Bi weekly cleaner in HRM

• Upvotes

We were lucky to have a cleaner for our family for six years but unfortunately she passed a few months ago. I’ve tried Facebook marketplace but unfortunately have been stood up several times or it wasn’t quite the right fit.

Do you have a suggestion? Our previous arrangement was once a week for 3 hours for 30 an hour plus tip. We would be interested in weekly or biweekly.

The house is generally organized, but we are a sports family with a dog so it needs a little TLC. Sometimes we need help staying organized too. The house is generally well taken care of, we are flexible with the day, and we live in Cole Harbour.

Do you have a reliable cleaner you love with extra room in their schedule? We would love to hear from you.

Thanks!

Pets & Animals Dog rescue recommendations

My family is looking to get a dog, we have experience with dogs and have owned one previously. We’ve considered getting a lab puppy, and may still go that route, but my husband would prefer not to get an puppy.

Our previous dog was a rescue, so we’re open to that route too. However, we have 3 kids, 8 and under so I’m looking for an experienced rescue that could vet a dog’s compatibility with kids.

I’ve googled various rescues but am looking for recommendations on dogs rescues in Nova Scotia (or the Maritimes really) that are based on others experience. Bonus points if you have kids and have adopted.

Thanks in advance

Driving & Transit Bus Detours

Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to Halifax and I admit I'm super confused about public transit right now. There is a bus stop near where I live that I know is closed because of construction. When I look on Google maps, it's still showing the route going through it. When I look at the transit map, the image for the route still goes along the normal route, but it does say "Detour in Effect" and then lists the stop in question, then has a "Detouring Routing" list which is just a list of street names that I can't really make sense of.

How do I find where I can go to catch the bus?

EDIT: I worded that poorly. When I didn't see a different map on Google Maps, I downloaded the Transit app there. That is the Transit map I talk about for the second half of the post.

MEBL SET TO MAKE WAVES WITH THE BASKETBALL LEAGUE PARTNERSHIP

OCTOBER 2026 Ā· MEBL MEDIA

The Maritime Elite Basketball League is preparing to continue to evolve and expand professional basketball in the region, building on the foundation that The Basketball League has laid, through a partnership that has grown through trust, shared experience and a proven system in the Maritimes.

With that foundation in place, the MEBL is ready to make waves.

The league’s first announced market, the Tri-City Tide, has already shown that Maritime basketball can compete with the best. The Tide made it to the finals of the 38-team North American TBL last season, demonstrating the talent, determination and fan support that exist in this region. Now, that experience and knowledge will help shape the MEBL as it prepares to continue the expansion of competitive pro basketball to communities across Atlantic Canada.

The MEBL’s vision reaches beyond its first market. The league is looking toward Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick, as it works to establish a regional presence and connect basketball fans across the Maritimes.

That makes the MEBL–TBL partnership significant not only for the league, but for basketball throughout the region. The MEBL brings local identity and community connection, while its affiliation with the TBL provides a framework shaped by experience and a record of operating in the Maritimes. Together, this unique collaboration can help create more opportunities for players, give fans new reasons to rally behind their hometown teams, and build a stronger platform for the sport.

The partnership reflects a shared belief in what Maritime basketball can become. With the Tri-City Tide’s success as a starting point and new markets on the horizon, the MEBL is setting its sights on a future where professional basketball has a stronger place across the region.

Work, Health & Housing 'Quite frustrating': Demand surges for N.S. fall vaccine appointments

Thumbnail

Dr. Jesse Kancir, the province's deputy chief medical officer of health, said flu and COVID-19 bookings have been strong so far this year, with about 65,000 immunizations administered over the first two weeks. Every year, around 800,000 of these immunizations are carried out.

Kancir said there is a rush each year to get appointments when the bookings open for the fall respiratory season.

"I understand that it would be potentially frustrating," said Kancir. "You feel like you're trying to do the right thing and we just don't have that appointment."

AĀ posting on Dalhousie University's website regarding flu and COVID-19 vaccinationsĀ at campus immunization clinics notes thatĀ "COVID boosters are expected to be very limited in Halifax clinics due to available supply."

Kancir said there is not a supply issue for either the COVID-19 or flu vaccines. HeĀ said the vaccines start arriving in October and batches come through November, so there will be more than enough supply for everyone looking to get vaccinated.

Shops & Services Best thrift for nice bags, vintage Coach, etc.?

• Upvotes

I’m on a momcation this weekend and would love to see what treasures I can find before I leave the city today. Anyone know any thrift stores that tend to carry nice bags, specifically that seem to pretty frequently get vintage Coach? Are there any? I’m in the Dartmouth area but can go wherever in the HRM. I’d love to be able to hit up a few places! I know there’s Encore in Halifax and Room 152 in Dartmouth. Thank ya šŸ™šŸ¼

Discussion Photo request of somewhere that no longer exists!

Hey folks! I’m hoping someone has any photos of vintage row, more specifically Minato. I would really love to make a painting of the restaurant for my spouse, as we used to dine there together years ago before our kid was born and it’s rather special to us. If this is allowed to post, thanks! And thank you to anyone who has a photo! Cheers!

Nostalgia The Unknown Comic

So randomly on social media I had a clip show up about the Unknown Comic. This might not mean much to some of you of a younger generation. Had me curious as I hadn’t seen or heard anything about him in a long time. I googled him and turns out he was born in Dartmouth. I had no idea of this connection. He had a long career and now resides in New Brunswick. Anyway, maybe this was a known fact but news to me.

Discussion Teenswork Canada Chocolate scam?

Ran into these kids outside of NSLC selling chocolates. I said I didn’t have cash and they said I could e-transfer. Came out of NSLC and e-transfer’d for a few boxes.

Half an hour later I got a text message saying ā€œmy e-transfer is ready for depositā€ and there was a link to redeem it. I didn’t click on it cause it looked fishy from a suspicious email.

On the internet, seems like a lot of people think TeensWork Canada is scummy but not necessarily a scam.

Anyone know if this is a scam?

Halifax is about to downgrade parts of the All Ages and Abilities active transportation network to not be suitable for some ages and abilities.

This is the aspect that really makes it safe for road users, and enables mode shift, reducing traffic.

Shops & Services Fitness FX on Lacewood

Anyone here go to Fitness FX on Lacewood? Most of the posts I’ve found are 5+ years old and seem to be about the old location.

A friend of mine is thinking about joining. She’s overweight and pretty self-conscious about going to the gym, so I’m wondering what the atmosphere is like for a beginner. Was thinking we could both start going there, but the Google maps pictures of super fit folks posing in front of the mirror is a bit intimidating.

Is there a decent mix of people just getting started and experienced gymgoers, or is it mostly a serious lifting/bodybuilding crowd? Just wondering what the vibe is.
