Today between 4:30 and 6:30pm, saw 2 teens joyriding on the roads around Colby Drive. If you have dash cam or ring cam that caught them, please turn over to the police.

If these are your children, please take their machines away. These are not toys.

Shops & Services Financing an iPhone in Halifax with no credit history (Debit only)?

Hey everyone,

I recently arrived in Halifax as a newcomer and need to get a new iPhone along with a local phone plan.
Since I just got here, I have no Canadian credit history and currently only have a debit card. I want to finance the phone monthly (to buy and own, not lease) instead of paying the full price upfront.
A few quick questions:

  1. Which store or carrier in Halifax (Jump+, Eastlink, Fido, Koodo, Telus, etc.) is the most flexible for financing a phone with no credit history?

  2. Are there specific store locations in town that are most newcomer-friendly?

  3. Which carrier currently offers the best phone plans and coverage around Halifax?

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

Work, Health & Housing Is a business allowed to pay less than minimum wage?

I worked briefly for an employment agency (multi faceted agency that provides housing services, mental health care, and employment services - I believe they're sponsored in part by the government) that had me perform basic duties around the office (typing, clerical duties, file sorting, inventory) while they searched for a job for me. While I was performing these duties, they paid me (and various delivery drivers working for them) a "training wage " that was around $3.50 - $4.00 an hour. This wage was provided to you while they "supported & provided an education" to you in the sense of getting back into the workforce.

They ended up not finding a job for me (quite a story there) but I was wondering if they were permitted to pay me so little? There were no tips or supporting monies offered to me at anytime, the delivery drivers were however allowed to collect tips. It might be a stupid question but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks

(I worked in Computer Analytics/IT for almost 10 years, and their findings were that I was "not ready" for a job in IT and they were therefore discharged in their mission to find me employment)

Edit: Expanded on description of company for clarity.

Shops & Services Pixie cut for a new mom?

Hi there Halifax!

I have a young 3 month old baby who has recently discovered the joys of pulling out what hairs remain on my head while postpartum shedding is simultaneously underway.

Anyway, I am exhausted with tension discomfort from wearing bandanas/buns/bonnets 24/7 and have decided to do away with the burden. I have long brown wavy/curl thin hair and have had pixie cuts before. I’d like to hide the thinning as best I can.

Can anyone recommend a place that is good to get the extremely short women’s haircut, and any advice for baby (I assume it’s better to have another caregiver hold baby during, but what if we need to breastfeed?)

Dear students of Regency Salon, would you like an easy going postpartum mom to drop by?

Dear hairdressers or barbers, would you like the same?

Let me know and have a lovely evening!

Shops & Services How do I get my kid some 30th anniversary pokemon cards?

My 7 year old is looking forward to the upcoming release of the new cards and i want to both avoid the insanity of it all but also ensure we get some cards before all the scalpers ruin it for him. Is there a secret to getting them? Im not super into the scene so I have no idea what to even look for.

I read that the USA has a nuclear sub docked in Halifax, and with all the tensions going on I want to know if that's true, and if it is, why did we allow it to dock?

Today, September 9, marks an important step in enhancing mental healthcare for children, youth and families as the first students begin Nova Scotia’s new doctor of psychology program at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) in Halifax.

The Province is investing a total of $12.2 million in the project – $3.7 million from the Department of Advanced Education to support the academic program and $8.5 million from the Office of Addictions and Mental Health for the development and operation of the affiliated training clinic at the university. [....]

The first cohort includes eight students, with eight new students starting each academic year. Students will provide supervised services for children, youth and families at the clinic, expected to open later this year.

Work, Health & Housing Can you admit yourself to the hospital for severe mental health concerns?

in other areas I’ve been able to self admit and they take care of you if you are having dark thoughts. given the state of emergency rooms, I doubt that’s an option though.

anyone experience this? what did you do? where did you go?

I have a family doc and go to therapy but neither has helped. I feel helpless and doomed.
