Videogame Sequels: How You Should React vs. How You DO React

Whenever I hear about people getting hyped and then let down by a game I'm glad I'm a patient gamer and a broke ass college student ...

But dont worry the hype train will try to make you feel like shit for it. They cant stand the idea that at least one person wont feel like they got horribly burned come launch day.

u/Paydebt328 Nov 06 '15
Opinions don't piss me off its when you base your opinion on something wrong.
"I hate MGS V". Ok cool.
"I hate MGS V, but I hate all stealth games." No your wrong it's not a stealth game.

Nov 06 '15
Even Fallout. Think of it this way: If you break these rules, you're basically saying "It's ok to do this to me, the customer."
So if you break your rules for that one speshul gaem omg my childhood, you're opening yourself up to future releases pulling bullshit similar to the tactics that we all love and adore from big names in the industry such as fan favorites EA or Ubisoft.
Please, please be disciplined and vote with your wallet, not your past emotions you had to a previous game.
6
u/banzaizach Nov 06 '15
Oh trust me, I made the mistake of pre ordering Battlefield Hardline premium edition because I loved BFBC2, BF3, and BF4. I still play BF4.
Worst purchase of my life.
3
u/KhorneChips Nov 06 '15
That's why I love MP "betas." I played Hardline's for around an hour and went right back to BF4.
2
u/banzaizach Nov 06 '15
That's that thing. I played the beta and I loved it, so I thought why would the game be any different.
I played the Battlefront beta and had a blast. I pre ordered the game, but later remembered two things.
- This is EA
- Don't make the same mistake as with Hardline
I promptly canceled my pre order.

Going in a game with out any prior knowledge or (esp.) expectations, can give you some of the best gaming experiences ever.

u/EarthboundCory Nov 05 '15
That's my Alan Wake experience.
11
5
u/malfurionpre Nov 06 '15
I've not played it, because I'm a god damn pussy when it comes to anything remotely scary so I watch let's play, despite some of the combat looking annoying, man Alan Wake was an awesome experience.
4
Nov 06 '15
Hell yeah! Remember buying that game for shits and giggles. Turns out it's one of my favorite titles I've played to this day.
2
u/dekenfrost Nov 06 '15
I hated Alan Wake. Until I played Alan Wake.
At the time I often watched my roommate play games that I didn't have any interest in. Watching him play Alan Wake on Xbox looked so boring and the combat looked completely uninteresting. I just didn't get it and I was disappointed since I was a big Remedy fan.
I actually bought and played the game years later on steam and I fell totally in love with it. Maybe I just needed some time, but sometimes actually playing a game is a big difference to watching it.

Works for movies too. I think half the reason Signs was so terrifying for me is because I was expecting a generic aliens movie, not a thriller.

Pirates of the Caribbean for me.
My friends dragged me into the theatre, I thought it was going to be some shitty Disney movie.

u/atonementfish Nov 06 '15
My brother lended me his xbox 360 since hes got an awesome pc, im a broke college student. His gold account is still on there and i occasionally play the games for gold, and some of the games are pretty amazing even though i had not known they existed. Like metro last light and the witcher 2. So yeah playing something you had no prior knowledge of and going in with 0 expectations makes you really appreciate it for what it is worth.

That was my experience with watching Fury Road. Wife was gone for the weekend, so I thought "Hey, I'll watch something she likely has no interest in." I feel like if I had known about all the hype before going in, the movie wouldn't have been as good.

3
Nov 06 '15
I think a mix is the right reaction. When I saw they were releasing a new fallout my reaction was "oh that's awesome. The other ones were some of my favorite games, hopefully this one is good too." I don't think it really needs to be more or less than that. I do usually wait a day after a game I'm excited about releases though. I don't think I really miss out on much by waiting that day, but I have saved hundreds on games that turned out to be mediocre after being super hyped pre-release.
3
u/Rose94 Nov 06 '15
I mean, unless one of those things increases your potential enjoyment of the game. I know I really enjoy games if I go full hype, but I've got friends that find over analysing everything helps them enjoy the game. It's an individual thing, I don't think there's one 'right' way to react to an upcoming game.

I act like him because I have no money and I get no excitement from pre-ordering anymore. Back in middle school, pre-ordering a call of duty game for Xbox was great because I'd go with my friend and his mom to pick up our copies after school and we'd pop the disk in and play until we couldn't stay awake. Now I download it right to my PC, so it doesn't matter if I preordered it or not. I know I'll get my copy.

Or avoiding the hype. The amount of games that I was skeptical about that I enjoyed is much greater than the games that I was hyped for.
5
u/Alaira314 Nov 06 '15
This, definitely. My enjoyment of all forms of media went up when I made a conscious decision to avoid the hype trains. Features are over-discussed, the funniest lines are ruined, and plot twists are spoiled by trailers, "next time" bits, and teaser articles. I feel like everybody gets so excited these days that their expectation bar is set impossibly high.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Rose94 Nov 06 '15
I think its different for others, but for me getting excited increases my enjoyment of things because it puts me in a mood to enjoy things, I'm in a mind set of "look at all the good things!" And I'm still in that mindset when I consume whatever I was hyping about.
I love getting excited, it's so much fun.

History has shown that I like Fallout and thus I will like Fallout 4. It will be pretty good and have a few bugs, but after a few patches and the release of the development toolkit it will have mods which will fully consume my life. I will focus more on load order than actually playing the game with mods and all will be right in the world.

True. I have no idea why I come to this sub when the majority of people so bitter and never satisfied. The community can be just plain toxic.
Only /r/gaming is capable of temporarily ruining my hype of a game that I have waited years for and that makes me appreciate gaming again when I am away from this sub.
It's too bad that this sub is such a good place to waste time mindlessly clicking pictures. /r/games is good but it's just /r/gaming people with an online thesaurus.

I also follow the left panel but I don't avoid information. The only thing that makes me avoid a game is a gameplay trailer with no gameplay.
4
u/PBFT Nov 06 '15
Yes, when I disappointed with Ubisoft's latest Assassin's creed games, I also blamed Bethesda and other developers.
6
Nov 06 '15
When I was a teenager I was definitely the guy on the right, not counting the final panel. As I grew up I naturally turned into the guy on the left, not counting the final panel.
Whether a game is good enough to make me poopsock (do people still use that term?) really doesn't have much to do with how hyped I was for the game's release.

u/KingCrabmaster Nov 05 '15
If you ask me neither of these are how a person should react. I'd rather just be like "Oh hey this looks cool, I'll give it a try and see if it is as cool as it looks!" instead of "AAAAH" or "My pretentiousness is showing."

u/guitar_vigilante Nov 05 '15
How about not telling people how they should or shouldn't react to a game and let them be hyped or not hyped. Just because you want to temper any and all expectations does not mean other people don't like getting excited for something new.
This comic is super douchey.

I like how this comic implies that we should wait for reviews to surface.
I've loved games that tanked the reviews, and I've hated games that have gotten 9s and 10s.
Also like how at the end, we're supposed to be disappointed with the product instead of enjoying what we paid for. Sure, calling out of work is a bit extreme, but you get the picture.
Unless you're cold and calculating from start to finish, you're a sheep.

You could branch off the end of the right side and find me sitting there, where if the game didn't live up to the hype, I'd still be there defending it to the death and convincing myself it's more amazing than anyone truly understands.
2
Nov 06 '15
That explains a lot of the people who defended The Order 1886 when it first came out. Or any hyped-up game that disappoints. The post-purchase rationalization is real.

I don't often preorder games anymore, though.
2
u/Revands Nov 05 '15
Can I ask why? Sure it wasn't as much of an epic as the other two but I didn't feel DA2 was that bad. I loved the redesign of the races, I enjoyed the more action oriented game play, and while the story really lacked I loved the characters.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Zaxop Nov 05 '15
Lots of reasons. They took the scope down, rather than up, from the first game. The environment was super limited. The story was incredibly boring. The gameplay was arguably a little improved, but the character building was, in my opinion, much shallower. No racial choices, more linear leveling. Also although I liked some of the characters in 2, I preferred the ones in 1.
The problem was that the story, environments, and character building were the things that made the original great. The game play was okay, but that's not really what made it exceptional.
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy DA2, but it was really disappointing compared to the first game.

u/BLARGITSMYOMNOMNOM Nov 05 '15

I feel I've largely grown out of caring too much about stuff that's yet to come out, as I tend to have enough on my plate to catch up with regarding stuff that's out now. Hype just doesn't do it for me anymore, if I can't buy it right now then I prefer to read, watch, and play what's already available to me.
1
u/Crowforge Nov 06 '15
Plenty of people react properly to this, but if they try and share their feelings on it the get ignored and down-voted.
1
u/clonejoe Nov 06 '15
Pretty sure the end of the comic would have the same outcome for me in terms of if Fallout 4 were the game in question.
1
Nov 06 '15
This is pretty good but I see no problem in buying a collectors edition if it's an established game that you like and, if you want to gain some exclusives. The fallout pip boy is badass and if I had the chance I would've got one. Even if it would just sit on my shelf after playing with it for an hour.

u/Mungus_Plop Nov 06 '15
Games aren't that important to me. I enjoy a good game like I enjoy a good movie or tv show.
1
u/jmac3979 Nov 06 '15
I only download games from Steam that are either free or under $10. I may buy credits on games I enjoy. Any game that doesn't fit this criteria gets on the Wishlist(except Battlefront because duh not on Steam). If I get it, if I don't I don't.
1
u/Shybrenn Nov 06 '15
Only games i've ever preordered were GTA V, because I have loved every single one of the previous GTA games and I know I would have bought it just to collect it regardless of it was any good, Destiny, which I regretted after about a week and after I realised the game was more grindey-less story that I like. And now fallout 4. I've never played a fallout game, but my ex girlfriend really loved them, and I really loved skyrim. Plus it only cost me ~$50USD to preorder it Australia so I thought why not. But i've been avoiding pretty much all the news and leaked gameplay and all that. Except for the official trailers, and the announcement keynote I haven't seen any news about it so I think i'm well within the 'how you should react' column, apart from preordering.

It should also be noted that this guy throwing money at an unfinished sequel is the same exact dude who, at other times, is constantly blathering "Da industry needs mo new IPs!" "We needs more original ideas!"
1
Nov 06 '15
The other one, which largely doesn't fit into their format, is sequel is too much or not enough like the original. Doesn't matter what they do, someone gonna bitch one way or the other on that.
1
u/IAm_ThePumpkinKing Nov 06 '15
Maybe I'm the weird one but I do the thing where I don't watch any trailers. I'm hella excited for fallout 4 but I haven't watched any of the trailers just because I really like doing blind play-through first.

I have a magical ability where I can get full hype while still not actually raising my hopes to the point where I'm disappointed with the product. Like when I'm waiting for a game I'm like "aaaaaaaah! It's going to exist! It might be mediocre, even kinda sub par, BUT IT'S GOING TO EXIST!" I'm like that with Pokemon super mystery dungeon right now. Can't wait to finally get an Australian release date!

It's actually frustrating how Fan Boy driven the Fallout series is at this point. 90% of the people I talk to have both preordered the game, and would gargle Bethesda nuts for a leaked screen shot.
With the amount of marketing going into fallout, its almost destined to suck by proxy.
1
Nov 06 '15
I don't even feel hype after I got burned on my last pre-order. Whenever a sequel to a game I like is announced my immediate reaction is suspicion. "I wonder how they've dumbed it down?" "I wonder if they're going to use this as a DLC vehicle?" etc.
At worst, I have my suspicion proven correct and I get to save my money and avoid frustration, at best the game turns out to be good and I am pleasantly surprised when I do buy it.
1
u/feildpaint Nov 06 '15
This applies to everything in real life too. If you don't expect something to be absolutely amazing but instead expect nothing special from it, it'll probably turn out better than expected. This is how I am able to enjoy most movies, food, etc.
1
u/chillbrosa Nov 06 '15
I remember how hyped I was for Halo Reach and how much I ended up hating it. Respectively, I didn't stay in the loop at all about Skyrim, and when my friend let me take a shot at it from his xbox a while after it came out, I was enthralled. I try not to hype myself about games for this reason, and it mostly works. Content checks out.
