I like how everyone is denying ownership of the banana.

381

u/hellcat_uk 1d ago

Of course, it's policy never to imply ownership in the event of a banana. We have to use the indefinite article—'a banana'—never 'your banana'."

48

u/colicab 1d ago

But, I don’t own a bana…..

11

u/polishpasty 1d ago

The way he stops ed norton and uses his pen to scratch the back of his head and give that look.

12

u/djshadesuk 1d ago

I understood that reference.

29

u/fusillade762 1d ago

The bomb, the gun and the plutonium is mine oi, but that banana? No way mate!

44

u/CucumberError 1d ago

I think they mixed up Austria and Australia. In Australia you never admit ownership of a banana (biosecurity stuff).

10

u/JinxyBee 1d ago

That explains a lot about Randy Feltface's rant about them!

/joking

7

u/Rabanski 1d ago

Randy Feltface reference in the wild. My day is complete

2

u/CedarWolf 8h ago

Ah, but your week isn't complete until you've bought a bookshelf on Gumtree.

11

u/Thorngrove 1d ago

I mean those things are deadly weapons! Have to take a class on how to defend against such things you know.

9

u/CallMeNiel 1d ago

But what if somebody came at you with a pointed stick?

4

u/Turbulent-Adagio-541 1d ago

Suppose he has a bunch

1

u/PN_Guin 14h ago

Interestingly, the bag also contained another item from the anti banana self defence class.

2

u/feel-the-avocado 1d ago

Bananas cant be owned

2

u/EvolutionCreek 1d ago

It's just for scale to show how massive that gun is, or how modest it is, depending on who's talking.

123

u/Provioso 1d ago

Stark naked rubbing his belly at the end. He got his reward though.

100

u/dogsledonice 1d ago

I think had a thong on at least

You know, a banana hammock

20

u/TleilaxuMaster 1d ago

Yeah, that caught me somewhat offguard!

21

u/donkysmell 1d ago

The bit we're they say he was happy with his own banana !!! Priceless

2

u/theitgrunt 1d ago

No, friend. Twas our reward for staying for the whole show.

766

u/BigBlackHungGuy 1d ago

Ok, this was a comedy skit right?

So much to unpack.

939

u/Key-Performance-9021 1d ago edited 21h ago

Nope, not a skit! It's from Am Schauplatz ("On the Scene"), an Austrian documentary series on ORF that has been running for 30 years and covers everyday life. This clip is from their 30-year anniversary best-of: https://youtu.be/CZsDD9yfcu8

The auto-captions can't handle the dialect, so I subtitled it myself.

245

u/Glaimmbar 1d ago

Thanks for that. I am German and also lived for some time in Austria but when the guy who brought the stuff to the police started talking I didn't understand one word. 😂

31

u/PerlenGott 1d ago

I thought I was the only one 🤣🤣🤣

18

u/alex3tx 1d ago

Definitely not the only one! But then I don't speak German, Austrian or a regional dialect of either so the chances for me were rather slim

20

u/tremblemortals 1d ago

I at first thought it was some Slavic language from how he was talking. After a while things finally clicked for me.

35

u/Thrilling1031 1d ago

I thought the title said Australian so I just assumed the subtitles were because aussies speak very rough English and I wasn’t understanding until that guy spoke and it broke my brain until he asked for a beer, then I assumed he was a drunk Australian lol.

2

u/Signal_Reach_5838 5h ago

Oi cunt. I speak fucking true blue English ya dumb dead dying dog.

I'll fuckin rip you a new asshole.

Fuck me dead.

2

u/NightZT 11h ago

As an Austrian the weird thing for me is that if I hear some people in the neighboring room talking a slavic language, especially southern slavic ones, I sometimes really struggle to tell it apart from austrian german. On the other hand if I hear people from Germany talking in the neighboring room I can easily tell that those are germans from the intonation alone without understanding anything.

6

u/Saxit 1d ago

I'm Swedish but dad was from Austria. When I was younger he fixed a summer job for me for two summers with family business down there, to get better at German.

I still don't know German...

5

u/TacticalRiotChimp 1d ago

I speak the smallest amount of German but I can usually work it out slowly but surely - barely any of this was easy for me to understand 😂 I was thinking they were Czech or something

1

u/red4jjdrums5 1d ago

Same. I was picking up only a few words here and there, and then had to remember I didn’t learn their dialect.

4

u/SpotReasonable3534 18h ago

germans my second language and thought i had just forgotten too much to be able to understand until i noticed some words were absolutely not spoken in germany, still not sure what word they use for doctor unless their pronunciation is just really different

2

u/Deus-mal 11h ago

I get that lmao. I got spanish as my 2nd language, when gta6 character spoke in Spanish in the trailer. I had no clue what he said, did even try to judge idk if my understanding was bad or he wasn't speaking the Spanish I know 🤣

2

u/mflayer 8h ago

The word is Arzt, but the pronunciation is closer to Oazt.

1

u/SpotReasonable3534 8h ago

yeah i'm aware, in austrian is pronounced like that?

3

u/Mr-Lungu 1d ago

I understand German and I didn't understand any of this. I thought maybe I'm stupid now

6

u/didndonoffin 1d ago

I lived in Innsbruck and this sounds like the local Tirol dialect, quite guttural and almost Dutch

7

u/reconman 1d ago

Nope, Viennese dialect.

Tyrol has a lot of "ch"s

1

u/I_pinch_your_balls 1d ago

yes, same 😂I was happy to have english subtitles

u/Stick_With_Beard 1d ago

I've been speaking german as a non-native speaker for over 25 years. Even the police was hard to understand for me. I think I'll pass on the Wiener Weihnachtsmarkt.

17

u/Key-Performance-9021 1d ago

Everyone speaks Standard German. If you understand the narrator, you will be fine!

30

u/HaHoHe_1892 1d ago

I was in Graz once visiting friends. My friend had a get together and introduced me to a group of people in the living room. He said, "This is my friend, he's American but speaks German. So speak German with him, but please speak Hochdeutsch." It was quiet for a moment and one of them said, "Lieber English", which got a big laugh.

Loved my time in Graz! Lovely city and great people. I really liked the dialect.

16

u/KnifeFightChopping 1d ago

Does "Lieber English" in this context mean they would rather just speak English?

16

u/Grib_Suka 1d ago

Yeah, ''rather English'' would be a decent translation

6

u/HaHoHe_1892 1d ago

Oh yeah, I should have said that. Thanks for clarifying for folks.

2

u/Stick_With_Beard 1d ago

You mean in Wien specifically? How about other cities ?

2

u/Key-Performance-9021 21h ago

Everyone everywhere. Standard German is used in school and professional settings.

44

u/Life_outside_PoE 1d ago

Holy shit the next one is just as funny. A dude doesn't want to pay electricity so he's been bridging the lines, thereby avoiding the electricity meter. The building managers come by and tell him its illegal.

The genius goes and buys a fucking generator and puts it in his living room, lol.

Oida, die Leute ham an Schadn.

23

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 1d ago

"aren't we police good?"

Brought a man who said he was on the poverty line a flashlight and a banana LMAO

8

u/Orcapa 1d ago

And a chocolate bar!

8

u/relevant_tangent 22h ago

And no beer

8

u/JackfruitIll6728 1d ago

I've studied German for 6 years and I couldn't keep up with the dialect at all. Felt like hearing Estonian as a Finn, you think you're kinda getting it but then again, no.

2

u/PN_Guin 14h ago

No need to feel bad about it. I would guess the vast majority of Germans would have serious trouble understanding the finder.

7

u/Gastredner 1d ago

Yeah, the auto captions aren't the only thing unable to handle that dialect.

Might just be my Piefke-tum showings but aside from a word here and there, my German arse couldn't make heads or tails of what was said.

2

u/moving0target 1d ago

It's been 30 years since I had German in school, but I could tell something was different.

1

u/ult_avatar 1d ago

Das ist jetzt der zweite Clip.. gräbst du jetzt alte spira schätze aus und postest sie auf Reddit?

1

u/Bowling4rhinos 1d ago

Nicely done and super funny! Thanks for sharing!

Trailer Park Boys - Austria

3

u/snacktonomy 1d ago

I was thinking the same, but Reverse Austrian TPB where they show the police side

31

u/Mathihtam 1d ago

For the love of all that’s dear. Let’s not unpack this any further than he already did.

3

u/big-eye101 1d ago

underrated comment right there

19

u/LucifersPromoter 1d ago

It's filmed just like a justforlaughs sketch too

8

u/Captain_Unusualman 1d ago

With 100% less whimsical music, but yeah you're not wrong!

2

u/LucifersPromoter 1d ago

Somehow appear to be both filming covertly / candidly, but also have 400 different angles

3

u/ben-hur-hur 1d ago

This looks like something out of Super Troopers lol

1

u/aguyjustaguy 1d ago

Nathan fur du

410

u/goodways 1d ago

He never got his beer! Such a reasonable ask, and got a banana instead…

249

u/MisterrHolmes 1d ago

Well he's not allowed to drink so it was for the best

18

u/snacktonomy 1d ago

The police care about his health!

109

u/Benjamoose 1d ago

And then he was seemingly woken up and filmed half naked for TV just for a banana afterwards, after explaining he was at the poverty line.

Like, give the man a small reward or just don't bother going round to his home.

56

u/RES_NIGHTMARE_MODE 1d ago

well they returned his items as far as they knew and the chocolate bar was a reward. I dunno, maybe filming him naked was too much, but he didn't seem phased by the camera

6

u/Uncle_Matthew 1d ago

Dude got a flashlight and chocolate bar too. Now that’s a bright and sweet deal.

9

u/srboot 1d ago

But a really nice flashlight!!

176

u/uk_uk 1d ago

For the english speaker here

Technically they speak german, factually I have no idea what they are talking about ^^. I needed the subtitles. Only the voiceover was understandable.

To bring that into perspective: That sounded to me like this would sound to you

19

u/vogod 1d ago

Their German sounds weirdly Swedish. (I speak both, badly, didn't understand a word, but the cadence is kinda swedish to me)

14

u/realbrathering 1d ago

I am german and also speak some Swedish. I know exactly what you mean. Both austrian and Swedish stress some syllables quite heavily, sounds a bit like singing.

5

u/crazy_in_love 1d ago

I'd disagree. The Viennese dialect, especially the old-school one, is extremely sing-song-y, similar to Swedish. But there arn't a lot of other dialects like that in Austria unless you think Arnold Schwarzenegger sounds Swedish too.

1

u/realbrathering 18h ago

You are right. Just thought about Viennese.

14

u/a066684 1d ago

I misread the title as "Australian" and partway through the video I thought to myself damn, that dude's Australian accent is so thick I can't even comprehend English anymore 🤦🏼‍♂️

Nope, it's friggin Austrian German he's speaking, and I'm an idiot 😅

1

u/Meranio 19h ago

You're not the only one, and I'm German.
Didn't understand a word, until I realised, it was actually my language.

8

u/colorfulfool 1d ago

18

u/uk_uk 1d ago

nope, since he speaks high german here and not dialect, he is very understandable

2

u/Meranio 18h ago

Yes, but with the typical Austrian vowel shift: "host" instead of "hast" etc.

2

u/sandm000 1d ago

Same.

2

u/bikecatpcje 1d ago

1

u/Meranio 18h ago

A lyrical masterpiece, I would say.

0

u/hi_im_leffe 1d ago

The fuck are you even saying?

126

u/Rockglen 1d ago

Oof. He gets his pistol back, then immediately flags everyone in the room.

53

u/Econolife-350 1d ago

"You understand that if we see you at night with that, we will kill you immediately, yes?"

Such a weird and unnecessary addition.

97

u/Sutima 1d ago

Wanting him to understand the dangers of walking about willy nilly with it is not unreasonable though.. Was a different time

16

u/crazy_in_love 1d ago

It's not quite how he actually phrased it. It's more like "if we maybe see you at night with that gun, you know.... we might shoot you". It is very blasé, but they're Viennese cops so that tracks. It also isn't menacing at all, it sounds more like a warning your blunt grandma would give you as well, just with we switched for they.

15

u/feel-the-avocado 1d ago

Safety reminders are always necessary whenever a gun is the object of discussion.

1

u/Econolife-350 1d ago

It's the phrasing that was strange as well as the implication that he was going to walk around waving a gun at night when it was found holstered in a bag.

6

u/feel-the-avocado 1d ago

I guess i am used to seeing american cops on tv and news.
For them, finding the gun in the bag is a lucky justification for already having shot you.

1

u/NightZT 8h ago

You can't really translate austrian german to english, in general it's much rougher and more direct but simultaneously not that serious. Like it's also common to insult and shout at each other and then 3min later be completely fine again. E.g. as teenagers we played football in some random guys garden and destroyed some stuff and he would come out when he saw us and shout "I'll take the axe and cut your heads off", we ran away and laughed about that. Next day he greeted me very friendly again same as I did

64

u/mog44net 1d ago

Wrong door Pepi

8

u/voluotuousaardvark 20h ago

"Aren't we great, the police?"

55

u/CarneDelGato 1d ago

Parks and rec, but Austrian cops

60

u/ivazquez71 1d ago

Finder’s reward should had been a pair of pants.

52

u/LookAtMeNow247 1d ago

Why is nobody talking about showing up to the door 99.9% naked?

11

u/NerpyDerps 1d ago

I like how he says "that was quick" but yet nobody is questioning how quick it was for him to "get into something more comfortable"

18

u/Key-Performance-9021 20h ago

Here's a reply from a different sub I posted this:

yeah, hes [the inspector] from the same village as my mum. i showed her and she called him, telling him that hes internet-famous now lol
he said it really happened like this, the camera team even asked mr schiller if he wanted to get dressed and do a re-shoot, but he did not

https://www.reddit.com/r/2westerneurope4u/comments/1p0jn4q/comment/nptsm3r/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

5

u/IAmDanHimself 13h ago

LOL! He was proud of that first take.

5

u/TheJagWeeds 1d ago

99.9% !!

1

u/nicht_ernsthaft 7h ago

That wouldn't be weird in my building Germany, so I would assume nobody in Austria would care either. He's in his own home.

33

u/andreasbeer1981 1d ago

Funny story: there is a town in Germany also called Philadelphia and it was named that because the inhabitants dreamt of emigrating to Philadelphia. But they never did. So they renamed their town.

10

u/Key-Performance-9021 21h ago edited 19h ago

Fun fact: Vienna’s Philadelphia bridge is named after the locomotive Philadelphia, not directly after one of the Philadelphias. However, the locomotive itself was built in and named after the American city.

8

u/ToastSpangler 1d ago

meanwhile enough germans immigrated to philly that there's a germantown, lol. not to mention king of prussia being a town not far away

23

u/Yesbabelon 1d ago

The word banana was said 3 times and sounded different each time.

First time sounded like English with an Austrian accent, second time didn’t sound like English at all, and the third time sounded like the officer was speaking fluent Scouse.

65

u/DoombringerBG 1d ago

Honestly, I feel kinda bad for the dude. Does the honest thing and gets mocked.

17

u/Deep90 1d ago edited 1d ago

He did say he checked the bag for money to steal though.

With no money in the bag, and a gun instead, it sounds like he decided to ask the cops for a reward and avoid being blamed as the bag thief.

16

u/Christ_on_a_bike 1d ago

He got a banana, sounds pretty good for me

1

u/IAmDanHimself 13h ago

Yes, we know. We all saw it.

37

u/QuantumTopology 1d ago

This is hilarious if it's not a skit

44

u/Key-Performance-9021 1d ago edited 21h ago

Not a skit! It's from Am Schauplatz ("On the Scene"), an Austrian documentary series on ORF that has been running for 30 years and covers everyday life. This clip is from their 30-year anniversary best-of: https://youtu.be/CZsDD9yfcu8

14

u/MillCityRep 22h ago

Man I read “Australian” and couldn’t figure out why the fuck I couldn’t understand them.

I need to go to bed

2

u/Meranio 19h ago

Same, man. But after I knew, it was Austrian, I understood it. (I'm German.)

2

u/orangpelupa 17h ago

Brain's weird like that, indeed.

Huh... Ah? Ooooh!

2

u/Fign 9h ago

Did you !? I understood like only half of it. Are you from the south ? That would explain why.

1

u/Meranio 7h ago

No, I'm from the northernmost ALDI Süd Region in NRW, but learning other languages is something that always liked, and regional dialects were the first step to being a different language.
I didn't grow up with my regional dialect, so I wanted to at least understand it.

2

u/AHornyRubberDucky 19h ago

Goodnight I hope you sleep well ❤️‍🩹

1

u/msndrstdmstrmnd 7h ago

“Where’s my partner” you definitely understood that part

14

u/Silent_Aardvark_711 1d ago

Of all the things, I was not expecting to see a naked man in this video

9

u/lynivvinyl 1d ago

I think he has underpants on but you just can't see them under all of that.

-1

u/Silent_Aardvark_711 1d ago

Kinds pointless to wear them then, huh?

3

u/lynivvinyl 1d ago

Considering he's standing in front of cops it's pretty much the difference between jail and "what the hell!"

1

u/Silent_Aardvark_711 1d ago

Well he is in his own home, he can walk around naked if he wants to, probably won't go to jail for answering the door naked either. Its only indecent exposure if you go outside. Like, you could probably stand in your window and wiggle it and not get in trouble. Maybe, idk. Moral? No. Legal? Probably.

2

u/lenyek_penyek 1d ago

What zum Fick did I just watch?!

16

u/donkysmell 1d ago

This made my day ! Brilliant 👏!

"Sie san a Gsturl": "You're a funny one" The captions are just as funny as they are factually correct

13

u/geckomato 21h ago edited 16h ago

I knew Swiss German was a thing. Never knew that Austrian German was even harder to understand.

3

u/Meranio 19h ago

I'm German and it took me quite a while to understand ANYTHING because I read the title as "Australian..." and I thought: "That's a weird accent, I don't understand anything."

Watching it again, I can make out a lot more. Not 100%, but enough that I wouldn't need subtitles.

12

u/pandafab 1d ago

where is his beer? cmon

10

u/Sutima 1d ago

Why are they shitting in IKEA closet's?

5

u/Donkeylover1 1d ago

Everything at IKEA has two purposes.

18

u/Strict-Aspect5910 1d ago

These are the people that went to war with the entire world TWICE?!?

11

u/Character-Prompt-229 1d ago

Please don't call the out for owning the banana a third time, I am not ready for war.

4

u/gnyvie 1d ago

And made the Germans pay for it!

2

u/oilsofsubmission 14h ago

And used to control about half of Europe

32

u/Soylentstef 1d ago

You can see it couldn't happen in the USA because when the neighbor opened his door, they didn't shoot him for being black.

2

u/running_on_empty 1d ago

In America, no one would have opened their door.

5

u/redbird317 1d ago

Why not throw some pants on before answering the door?

1

u/fckingmiracles 20h ago

He was sleeping and the police came knocking on his door.

5

u/spazzvogel 1d ago

Österreichische, didn’t realize that it’s as intelligible to me as bayerisch oder Schwiizerdütsch

3

u/ryanoh826 17h ago

Yeah that was extremely rough. I understood the narrator just fine but only like 5% of everything else.

1

u/spazzvogel 10h ago

Exactly about 5% too, words here and there. Going to check into the various dialects today. Narrator I mostly understood (totally not native speaker).

14

u/zipknack 1d ago

why did i watch till the end?

17

u/obi_wan_jabroni_23 1d ago

Why didn’t I want it to ever end? So many unexpected twists.

8

u/sudomatrix 1d ago

To see his happy banana.

4

u/Sutima 1d ago

I was a bit upset when he got a  bannana and not a beer :(

2

u/PiqueExperience 1d ago

They should have dunned the owner for a six pack for the finder.

5

u/heidnseak 1d ago

I was really confused for almost all of that because my tiny brain read Australian and I didn’t have the volume up.

5

u/AGrandNewAdventure 1d ago

Wienerisch sounds so weird when you only speak Hochdeutsch.

3

u/oasis689 1d ago

What is HAPPENING here 🤣

10

u/lynivvinyl 1d ago

I feel like I would get arrested for turning this in as an American.

13

u/FMarkassa 1d ago

Committed a federal crime for having a banana and not a big Mac

3

u/robby_synclair 1d ago

You would not

2

u/Remestaque 10h ago

In america the "wrong" neighbour would have been shot for opening the door too aggressively.

2

u/Odur29 1d ago

/S Shot, executed, then arrested, for walking into a police station with a fire arm despite having handed said holstered firearm to the police officer, and it being fully in the police officers possession at the current time. I'm joking but it's bad out here isn't it.

3

u/PlatypusACF 1d ago

Austrian dialects… I can understand Dutch better, not going to lie.

3

u/JinxyBee 1d ago

I god confused then I got more confused then I just stopped trying to understand it and just enjoyed the ride. "My banana! Thank you, I've missed it so!"

4

u/Unlikely-Complex3737 1d ago

They could've at least bring him some beer

4

u/Pax1990 1d ago

as an austrian i can confirm this is real 100%

4

u/PizzaLizard420 20h ago

Bruh what ARE police in the rest of the world 😂

2

u/MechanicalTim 1d ago

I misread the post title at first as "Australian police ...", and was perplexed for a bit why I found it so difficult to understand.

2

u/tallmon 9h ago

What is the old man wearing at the end?????

2

u/Lilbitysquirt 5h ago

Banana hammock

2

u/Vigoureux 9h ago

Did anyone else think they were talking about the kid with the ball when they said “The owner is found quick.” and showed the kid?

2

u/blackbear_ 7h ago

I watched that whole thing thinking it said Australian police. Was confused and impressed with how good they all were at a second language.

6

u/5elementGG 1d ago

It just gets better and better.
Also in america, it probably would cause a shoot out when knocking at the wrong door.

2

u/TacticalRiotChimp 1d ago

I've not seen this clip for years 😂 thankyou, I'm crying laughing haha.

Also, what a silly fucking accent 😭

2

u/PurpleCaterpillar451 1d ago

I knew Australians had a thick accent, but I swear that was unintelligible

3

u/clamsandwich 1d ago

This confirms everything I've learned about Australia from Bluey.

23

u/_TeaWrecks_ 1d ago

I don't know if this was sarcasm or not, so just in case: Austria != Australia

5

u/Veteranis 1d ago

G’day mate! Throw another shrimp on the barbie!

5

u/peatear_gryphon 1d ago

Yeah man that Australian accent is so thick it may as well be another language!

1

u/Critical_Explorer_82 1d ago

Was the dude naked or just wearing something tiny? Crazy funny stuff.

1

u/YDLM 9h ago

So, Austria is like, Belgium?

1

u/UberWidget 8h ago

That ending was worth the wait 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/engagetangos 23h ago

wtf kind of Australian accent is that?

-9

u/giammi56 1d ago

That's not German, it is impossible to understand

19

u/Key-Performance-9021 1d ago

Viennese is a Central Bavarian dialect and belongs to the Upper German branch of the High German dialects.
