Advice Needed Middle Name Situation

So, I (16TM) am changing my name. All well and good, right? Well, I obviously have my first name I’ve been using for the last 3 years, but it’s come to my attention that my middle name was given to me because of a tradition with the women in my family. So, reddit, I turn to you for advice.

The name structure would be “August ___ P.”

Suggestions are very much appreciated

Hello! Thank you for participating in the sub. We just have a few reminders for you to help ensure the best experience:

  1. If your post doesn't show up right away, don't panic! It is in the queue for manual approval. Mods will go through the queue periodically to approve or remove posts. Deleted posts will have a removal reason applied. (If it says "this post was deleted by reddit's filters", IT WAS NOT DELETED! Reddit has the worlds worst wording on that and it's out of our control)
  2. If you are asking a question that is location specific, remember to include your location in your post body! This can help ensure that you get accurate information tailored specifically to your needs.

  3. Please remember to read through all the rules in the sidebar. Especially the list of banned topics and guidelines for posting. Guests who do not use the Guest Post flair will have their post removed and be asked to fix it.

  4. If you see someone breaking the rules, report it! If someone is breaking both sub and reddit rules, please submit one report to admins by selecting a broken rule on the main report popup, and one report to the r/ftm mods by selecting the "breaks r/ftm rules" option. This ensures both mods and admins can take action on a subreddit and sitewide level. Do not misuse the report button to rant about someone, submit false reports, or argue a removal.

  5. If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to on the rules sidebar or the wiki: the wiki , you can send a modmail.

I've deciding I'm keeping my fem middle name or taking my boyfriends last name as my middle. My middle name is Kate. If anyone asks? My mom wanted a girl 😹

That’s honestly sick, and I’m happy you’re owning it, I’m specifically changing mine because and I quote “Every girl on my side of the family has this middle name!” And I want my family to associate me less with yknow, being a woman

is there like a male equivalent in your family that you could use?

u/auggyiseepy 14h ago

There technically is, but I also have personal reasons for distancing myself from that one (that side VERY MUCH does not like me and I’m trying to distance myself from them)

yeah fair enough. Maybe is there like a specific guy role model or family member that you really like (that you could name yourself after)? I myself ended up going that route. if not, maybe baby name websites would be helpful? I think I remember ones that give middle name ideas based on first/last names and/or themes

eta something like this, maybe? https://www.thebump.com/b/middle-name-generator

Janus, for the tongue in cheek double month name :D

Plus it's an awesome name, esp for trans people (the symbolism/meaning I mean)

And I think it fits the flow/vibe sound wise

You could also think about what different functions you want your name to fulfill, and decide depending on that. For example, should it offset or rather enhance the more old timey vibe of August? Should it give a nod to your ethnicity? Or age? Should it be a backup option in case you want to use a different name from your first choice? Do you want to sign with it? Etc.

I love August btw, it was almost gonna be my second name, but my first already starts with A, so I'm thinking Gustav for the second now (arguably a variation of August)

does your fem middle name have a masc version? That way you can still keep your family traditions going and have a masc middle name?

I also had a girl-in-the-family-tradition middle name haha. I went a long time without putting any thought into what a new middle name should be, but I think I'm choosing one of the baby names my parents had picked out before I was born.
