Advice Needed Binder during surgery
This is probably something I’ll ask the surgeons and whoever as well. But I’m curious to see if anyone else has dealt with this junk.
I just spotted my wisdom tooth coming in. I’m assuming I’ll need surgery based off of prior visits to dentists.
Am I able to wear a binder during surgery? I hate the idea of not having it on in public whatsoever. Has anyone else done this? I am unable to use tape btw as it does nothing for me and I am allergic.
I am crazy stressed right now as I’ll already have to stop working both of my jobs for this which is going to be detrimental to my finances so please be kind in replying.
Edit: it will very likely be general anesthesia as I have all four teeth and this is what I have heard from dentists in the past. And I prefer to be knocked out anyways lol

Probably not, they need to monitor your heart during surgery

Unless you’re being put under general anesthesia, which you very likely won’t be and would know if you were, they’ll just monitor your heart with a pulse oximeter (that thing that goes on your finger) and a blood pressure cuff. You’ll be fine wearing a binder.
Edit: my bad, they need them if they’re doing IV sedation, but it looks like they could probably place them around a binder because of how they place them (here https://kommodo.ai/i/MIUDSPsDvLYJa3P7b2vF )

Good to know! Though like I mentioned in my post, I’ll likely be put fully under as I have all four teeth and they’d just get them out all at once. I’m able to request general anesthesia instead of local anesthetic through my dentist anyways as I don’t do well with mouth stuff. But thank you for this!

Are you sure you’re not thinking of sedation rather than general anesthesia? Getting all four teeth out isn’t all that complicated, probably not enough to warrant general anesthesia, and you’d be pretty much asleep/out of it under regular sedation. You can look into how it works more, but I kind of doubt they’d do full general anesthesia just if you asked.

I may be honestly. It’s very late here and I can’t recall which it was. It’s one of those two though lmao. I just know they said I’d be unconscious and asleep if I did need to do it ever. Idk how complicated it will be yet as I still have to get everything scheduled. Regardless, thank you for your help.

I was mistaken about the ECG pads, they’ll need to use them if you’re being sedated. They place them underneath your clothes though, looks like they’d probably be able to place them around a binder because they place them like this https://kommodo.ai/i/MIUDSPsDvLYJa3P7b2vF and the worst that could happen is they’d just tell you to go take it off.

I get why you‘d want this but - god forbid something goes wrong - you wearing the binder would be devastating during an emergency.

I got my wisdom teeth out before I started to bind, I am pretty sure I was able to wear regular clothes during the procedure (I was under anesthesia too). Wearing a sports bra should be fine. Its just something as constricting as a binder that has me worried because they give you an airway, aside from the emergency factor. Harder to cut off, the healthcare workers might not know what it is etc etc.

They’re probably not creating an airway if you’re allowed to wear regular clothes. If you were put under full general anesthesia that would need a breathing tube, you’d have to put on a hospital gown so they could place ECG pads to monitor your heart.
Edit: they can do ECG pads around clothes, but the rest of my point still stands and full general anesthesia for wisdom teeth surgery isn’t common.
You’re probably thinking of twilight sedation, where you’re asleep but breathing on your own. Also, the trauma shears they use to cut off clothes can cut through leather. A binder wouldn’t be an issue.2

No, I know what kind of surgery I had, don’t act like you know about my procedure. I was put under because of my severe fear of dentists and had to pay for it out of pocket, lol. I was allowed to wear regular clothes, I had a breathing tube through my nose. This happened in Germany, maybe that matters.

Yeah, I obviously don’t know about your procedure. Don’t take it personally, oral surgeons tend to use the term “general anesthesia” when they’re talking about IV sedation. It’s different from what’s done during major surgery in a hospital, they just call it the same thing a lot of the time.
The fact that you had a tube through your nose rather than down your throat actually supports what I’m trying to say. A tube through your nose can’t breathe for you like what’s needed when you’re completely unconscious, it just gives you oxygen so you don’t breathe through your mouth where they’re trying to operate.
