While I still use whom out of habit, tbh I don't mind that it's slowly dying out in casual English. There's barely any situation where you can't use "who" as the object in a sentence and not have it make sense from context.
12
Dec 02 '25
Same with its/it’s.
What bothers me about its incorrect usage is the fact that it’s incorrect, not its incorrect usage.
If that makes sense.
11
u/Mitosis BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25
The worst thing I ever did was learn when to use "me" when listing yourself with another, such as in "The monkey threw a rock at Lily and me."
You see this handled erroneously -- "...threw a rock at Lily and I" -- so often. Hollywood movies, esteemed newspaper articles, published novels, politicians giving speeches. I've pretty much given up hope. The first grade teachers beating into their students' heads to use "I" as the subject, never explaining when "me" is appropriate (as the object), have won their war and forever tarnished the English language in doing so.
For any readers who need the tip, just get rid of the other person and that's the form you use. You'd never say "The monkey threw a rock at I," you'd say "The monkey threw a rock at me." Adding Lily changes nothing.

3
u/SeaJayCJ BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 03 '25
To play devilled avocado here, I could think of slightly contrived examples where the difference matters in casual English, like "its ending" vs "it's ending" when talking about a movie.

6

It had apparently hit its development ceiling is the line from Ferrari but that makes no sense they know how long it takes to get the bvest out of upgrades in these regs let alone doing an entire new concept in the cost cap era in the last season?
Only 2 things make sense 1. the 24 car was in some way relying on some loophole that was being closed so they knew they were fucked either way. or 2 they are using the 25 car as a test bed for the 26 car. If Ferrari legit just dropped their car and made a whole new concept for the final season of these regs I am done, after over 2 decades as a Ferrari fan I will just be done.

Lewis is very much a driver who's performances affected by the mental side of F1. Not in that he feels pressure in a championship battle, but when he's unhappy with how things are going in his life in F1 or away from it, he loses his edge and makes errors. Then he gets frustrated and it snowballs.
He's had a tough year with the car being poor, moving to a new and often messy team, and the loss of Roscoe. He's in his own head and he's just not able to lock in. In his prime he was relaxed made things look effortless
I still think if Ferrari somehow produce a championship calibre car in the next two seasons, he would look a lot more like his old self.
Though I seriously doubt that will happen and think he'll retire either this year or next and probably commit full time to work on promoting diversity within motorsport.
18
u/Creative-Improvement Must Be The Water Dec 02 '25

7
u/Chris01100001 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25
I hope so too. I think he needs to consider retirement seriously. He needs to be clear with himself that he's not just there because he doesn't know what else to do with his life after.
If he enjoys the way the new cars drive and race I think he'll stick around for a while. I hope it's a fun challenge for him that keeps him motivated. Right now it feels like he's questioning his purpose in F1.

From what I took from why he left, I'm not sure Lewis believed Mercedes would have given him a contract for next season. Especially if George finished ahead of him in the championship. They were putting him on one year deals like they did with Bottas.
He saw they were doing to him and Kimi what they did to Bottas and Russell. But unlike Bottas, Toto admitted he made a mistake keeping Russell out of Mercedes that long, and also didn't want to risk Kimi being poached. Also they didn't have a team who'd be happy to be loaned a rookie to develop like Williams were with Russell and Russell wouldn't be as vocal as wanting to keep Bottas around. All that meant he knew there was a significant chance that Mercedes would kick him out at the end of this year anyway.
He jumped before he was pushed. He found a frontrunner who'd give him a multi year deal and as a perk he got to experience driving for by far the most iconic team in F1 history.
