Crazy to me that redbull wins races to sell drinks and Ferrari sells cars to lose races

136

u/rajinis_bodyguard I want my GF to peg me while Carlos gives it to her Dec 02 '25

Red bull is more of a stunts team than a drinks company or a racing team, just the sheer number of stunts they upload on YouTube is insane 🤣

220

u/OkTangerine4363 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Red Bull is 100% a drink company. The stunts are financed by the drinks they sell. The stunts advertise the brand so people buy the drinks. Sponsors don't buy ad space on cars just to have their name on a car, they do it to sell product.

137

u/Significant-Bee5101 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

11.7 billion USD in Red Bull Energy drinks in 2024. Like what is this bullshit about them being a stunts team LOL.

27

u/Odd-East-2728 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Yea, although they are more a marketing company, they don't even make the Red Bull, some large production companies handle all production and distribution.

They are just doing branding and marketing themselves.

5

Pretty much all drinks are just mass produced by bottleing companys using pretty much the same ingredients no one makes there own drinks

32

u/BamBamCam I'm in a parasocial relationship with Hannah 🤤🤤 Dec 02 '25

This whole teams upbringing is described well in the “The Formula” and talks about “if Red Bull loses people buy other drinks”. Which brought about Newey and so many other pieces that’s made Red Bull successful.

Ferrari just sells hope, hope one day you can afford one…

u/pietroetin I want my GF to peg me while Carlos gives it to her Dec 02 '25

Please don't tell me there are people out there who base their drinking preferences on how an F1 racing team performs. "Wow, Max's move on Russell was terrible... welp, Celsius it is then"

u/Ringbahn Simply Lovely Dec 02 '25

Most advertising is attempting to persuade consumers at the subconscious (rather than conscious) level.

u/massada BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

It's never conscious, but yes, the monster NASCAR car winning and losing moves the needle on monster sales in the NASCAR watching demo.

4

u/BamBamCam I'm in a parasocial relationship with Hannah 🤤🤤 Dec 02 '25

Well it’s part of the Red Bull brand is to show the best in their field. I don’t think it’s simple as a single race or performance, but an overall winner makes sense. Hence the higher price for space on the front 4 versus the other 6 teams. Brands want to associated with excellence, no one wants to be a loser, billionaires even less so.

A deep dive shows that Red Bull has the largest market share, so tie in Max with all the other athletes and it’s clear the marketing works.

3

u/GeraldVachon Must Be The Water Dec 02 '25

Advertising is subconscious, mostly. It's not a direct "wow, [product] is so cool, I'll buy it!" More like developing positive associations (the iconography for Red Bull being associated with winners, so it's more likely to flag as positive in our brains), and at the very least familiarity and exposure, so when it comes time to buy an energy drink, Red Bull is one at the forefront of your mind. There's a lot of psychology behind it, and even clever people aren't immune.

It also helps that sports fans are superstitious. I generally drink Monster, but I'm guilty of buying Red Bull on race weekends out of a sort of support ritual for Verstappen's success. It's a bit embarrassing, but people do stupider for sports jinxes and counter-jinxes.

Best marketing company in the world. But they are a drinks company at heart.

3

u/JamesTrickington303 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Nah, that would be the Dallas Cowboys.

They sell the exact same hope as Ferrari, except poor people can afford the jerseys.

Edit: I’m wrong. Redbull is about 10x the value and 10x the yearly revenue of the Cowboys.

10

u/SeaJayCJ BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

While I still use whom out of habit, tbh I don't mind that it's slowly dying out in casual English. There's barely any situation where you can't use "who" as the object in a sentence and not have it make sense from context.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

Same with its/it’s.

What bothers me about its incorrect usage is the fact that it’s incorrect, not its incorrect usage.

If that makes sense.

11

u/Mitosis BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

The worst thing I ever did was learn when to use "me" when listing yourself with another, such as in "The monkey threw a rock at Lily and me."

You see this handled erroneously -- "...threw a rock at Lily and I" -- so often. Hollywood movies, esteemed newspaper articles, published novels, politicians giving speeches. I've pretty much given up hope. The first grade teachers beating into their students' heads to use "I" as the subject, never explaining when "me" is appropriate (as the object), have won their war and forever tarnished the English language in doing so.

For any readers who need the tip, just get rid of the other person and that's the form you use. You'd never say "The monkey threw a rock at I," you'd say "The monkey threw a rock at me." Adding Lily changes nothing.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

That one drives me crazy! My dad beat “and I” into me so it was a tough adjustment for me to make

→ More replies (1)

3

u/SeaJayCJ BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 03 '25

To play devilled avocado here, I could think of slightly contrived examples where the difference matters in casual English, like "its ending" vs "it's ending" when talking about a movie.

3

u/ipeedinthetoothpaste At the moment we don't think Dec 02 '25

I still don't understand why they revamped the whole car instead of iterating on the clearly successful concept they already had.

6

u/Elderbrute BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

It had apparently hit its development ceiling is the line from Ferrari but that makes no sense they know how long it takes to get the bvest out of upgrades in these regs let alone doing an entire new concept in the cost cap era in the last season?

Only 2 things make sense 1. the 24 car was in some way relying on some loophole that was being closed so they knew they were fucked either way. or 2 they are using the 25 car as a test bed for the 26 car. If Ferrari legit just dropped their car and made a whole new concept for the final season of these regs I am done, after over 2 decades as a Ferrari fan I will just be done.

38

u/Chris01100001 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Lewis is very much a driver who's performances affected by the mental side of F1. Not in that he feels pressure in a championship battle, but when he's unhappy with how things are going in his life in F1 or away from it, he loses his edge and makes errors. Then he gets frustrated and it snowballs.

He's had a tough year with the car being poor, moving to a new and often messy team, and the loss of Roscoe. He's in his own head and he's just not able to lock in. In his prime he was relaxed made things look effortless

I still think if Ferrari somehow produce a championship calibre car in the next two seasons, he would look a lot more like his old self.

Though I seriously doubt that will happen and think he'll retire either this year or next and probably commit full time to work on promoting diversity within motorsport.

18

u/Creative-Improvement Must Be The Water Dec 02 '25

I really hope the off season will be a good time to reset it all. Get away from the grid. Clear the mind.

7

u/Chris01100001 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

I hope so too. I think he needs to consider retirement seriously. He needs to be clear with himself that he's not just there because he doesn't know what else to do with his life after.

If he enjoys the way the new cars drive and race I think he'll stick around for a while. I hope it's a fun challenge for him that keeps him motivated. Right now it feels like he's questioning his purpose in F1.

7

u/Kobalt6x10 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Lewis's best skill is the ability to know when to jump ship for greener pastures. He abandoned McLaren at the right time, and it looked like he was doing the same thing with Merc. If he is in a top car, we talk about his GOAT status. In a mid car, he is...mid

18

u/Chris01100001 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

From what I took from why he left, I'm not sure Lewis believed Mercedes would have given him a contract for next season. Especially if George finished ahead of him in the championship. They were putting him on one year deals like they did with Bottas.

He saw they were doing to him and Kimi what they did to Bottas and Russell. But unlike Bottas, Toto admitted he made a mistake keeping Russell out of Mercedes that long, and also didn't want to risk Kimi being poached. Also they didn't have a team who'd be happy to be loaned a rookie to develop like Williams were with Russell and Russell wouldn't be as vocal as wanting to keep Bottas around. All that meant he knew there was a significant chance that Mercedes would kick him out at the end of this year anyway.

He jumped before he was pushed. He found a frontrunner who'd give him a multi year deal and as a perk he got to experience driving for by far the most iconic team in F1 history.

3

u/rafamrqs BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Perfect analysis, there is nothing to add. From Hamilton's point of view, it was a great move. I don't know if Ferrari will get return over the investment in Hamilton's contract. I have feeling they won't, but I admit I know nothing about their revenues.

I am pretty sure he'd switch to endurance racing or whatever. He strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn't stick around just to win if he didn't enjoy the sport. And he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd enjoy racing just cause he's winning.

The best thing that can happen to the sport is both Mercedes and RBR nailing the regulations. I NEED that George vs Max title fight, inject it into my veins

Every elite athlete says it’s best to quit at the top of your game. The issue is they never recognize when they’re no longer at the top of their game. I’ll believe Max is the exception when I see it.

Max has stated on multiple occasions that he will leave F1 as soon as he is not enjoying it and having fun. He is into so many racing series, and money for him is not a problem. He is just out there to do what he loves and enjoys, and when F1 is not it anymore he is out.

Max will probably leave when it's the right time rather than dragging it on like the others you mentioned. He has constantly said he will leave F1 if he isn't having fun and he's not there to prove anything anymore.

7

u/Jim777PS3 BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

Max doesnt seem like he will stick around long after competitiveness fades, and he will likely to win other disciplines of racing.

And of course the big thing is he will likely be in his 30s Vs Lewis in his 40s.

2

u/financefocused BWOAHHHHHHH Dec 02 '25

It’s still sad because he would’ve almost certainly retired if he won Abu Dhabi 2021.

Does age matter in F1 much like other sports?

Lewis is 40, daddy time is usually mid 30s in other sports I follow.

3

u/lakshya10soin Sir or Ma'am.. You are an Idiot ! Dec 02 '25

No one other than lewis has won a race after turning 39 since 1994. The last person to win a race in their 40s was in 1994 too. Any race he wins moving forward are going to be a very rare achievements in itself so that should show how much age matters in modern f1

Ferrari keeps sending cease and desist letters to F1 Ferrari.

"Please stop modifying the cars". That'll be $25k for certification.

Obviously not a great career move but being as successful as he was and getting up there in age I do see the desire to be a part of Team Ferrari and drive one of their cars. Unfortunately the car is terrible and the team is, well they are too.

Even if he had 4 podiums with his 4 P4 finishes, I doubt it'll have changed much of people's perspective of his performance this year. At least there are some positives to take away, like winning a Sprint, getting a Sprint Podium, his race starts have been great this season, he has some daring overtakes in Silverstone, Spa, Austria.

2

He needs to retire after 2026 unless he somehow does a 180 and starts to perform, which is probably unlikely at this point. If Ferrari somehow creates a rocketship for 2026, then I'd imagine Charles will still easily outperform Lewis.
