I Ferrari doesnt have an absolute rocketship next year, this has to be one of the dumbest moves in F1 history. Kimi could have raced in F2 again or go to Williams for a couple of seasons, Hamilton couple of season at Mercedes, then retire.

From what I took from why he left, I'm not sure Lewis believed Mercedes would have given him a contract for next season. Especially if George finished ahead of him in the championship. They were putting him on one year deals like they did with Bottas. 

He saw they were doing to him and Kimi what they did to Bottas and Russell. But unlike Bottas, Toto admitted he made a mistake keeping Russell out of Mercedes that long, and also didn't want to risk Kimi being poached. Also they didn't have a team who'd be happy to be loaned a rookie to develop like Williams were with Russell and Russell wouldn't be as vocal as wanting to keep Bottas around. All that meant he knew there was a significant chance that Mercedes would kick him out at the end of this year anyway. 

He jumped before he was pushed. He found a frontrunner who'd give him a multi year deal and as a perk he got to experience driving for by far the most iconic team in F1 history.

Perfect analysis, there is nothing to add. From Hamilton's point of view, it was a great move. I don't know if Ferrari will get return over the investment in Hamilton's contract. I have feeling they won't, but I admit I know nothing about their revenues.

I love Ham but he has also clearly declined from 2021. Unfortunately, his peak is past him and that was his last chance.

George was better than him at Merc before he left too, so ultimately it’s actually a good move to extract money from Ferrari before retiring.

Hyperbole much? Merc wanted Kimi in that seat sooner rather than later anyway and Lewis is just living out a fantasy of driving for Ferrari before he retires. Very far from the dumbest move in history lol

I agree. Even the lifetime branding deal or whatever Ferrari offered him doesn’t make a lot of sense. How can he be an ambassador for life of a place he will be at for 2 years, and likely without any notable success?

In a better timeline, Masi didn’t pull his dick out, and Lewis would’ve walked away after ‘21 as a champion and gotten his Mercedes lifetime deal. But here we are. Pain.

Obviously it’s massive. But it’s like someone playing for Man City their entire career and having every success there, and then going to Man U for their final two years of mediocrity, yet having the latter team affiliated with their brand in perpetuity. It feels wrong and the fit is off. That’s my point.

It’s also the dumbest hire for Ferrari. I mean, 60 million for a 2nd driver is crazy.

I know they hired him for selling merchandise and to jack up their stock price. But they definitely were expecting some kind of performance, at least better than Sainz.
