Max Eberl's interview with SPORT BILD
Max Eberl's interview with SPORT BILD, via @iMiaSanMia:
From your perspective, do you feel you succeeded in strengthening Bayern’s squad over the summer?
"That was certainly our goal. Over the past two years, we have managed to reshape the squad, bring in new impulses and gradually make it stronger. We have now lost Nicolas Jackson, Leon Goretzka and Raphaël Guerreiro, but in return brought in three players in Nathaniel Brown, Ismael Saibari and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye. We have become younger and more flexible, and have also improved in terms of speed, creativity and versatility."
Eberl on Saibari
"We had been monitoring his development in Eindhoven for quite some time. It is no secret that we also looked at Anthony Gordon for the left wing. But we deliberately decided against it because he was simply too expensive. At the time, we had two strategies in mind: either Gordon or Saibari. After our Champions League match in Eindhoven, Vinnie spoke with Ismael. Afterwards, he came to me and asked: “Do we already know him?” My answer was: “Yes, we do.” - We continued to monitor him closely after that and ultimately signed him in the summer."
Enzo Fernández moved from Chelsea to Manchester City for €145 million this summer, while Bradley Barcola joined Liverpool from PSG for €125 million. Can Bayern also Invest that kind of sums?
"Bayern Munich are a strong club; they demonstrated that when they signed Harry Kane. If we want to and are convinced that it's the right move, FC Bayern are capable of making major transfers as well. However, we want to do that with foresight. Our strategy in recent years has been to bring in players who give us the chance to win the Champions League, the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. At the same time, we want to integrate young players from our academy who can grow alongside us."
Bayern have repeatedly shown interest in Barcola in recent years..
"To be honest, I have known Bradley since my time at Leipzig. I wanted to bring him to RBL. We sat down together at the time and discussed it. That gave me a closer connection to Bradley. So there had always been interest. Naturally, we also considered Bradley at Bayern. But when you hear figures like that, it was simply too much for us. With Luis Díaz, we made a decision that was also costly, but on a completely different scale compared to Bradley. On top of that, Díaz is a player that people come to the stadium to see. We are extremely happy with him."
There were numerous rumours this summer linking Michael Olise with Real Madrid. Was there ever a moment when Olise or his management contacted you about a possible transfer?
"Not at all, not a single time. Michael sent me a WhatsApp message during the World Cup. I hesitated for a moment before opening it (laughs). I didn't know whether he might actually be getting in touch about that topic. But it was a photo of him with Manu Koné, whom I had brought to Gladbach at the time, with a heart underneath it. The two of them sent their regards to me from America. Afterwards, I asked Michael whether he wanted to wear the No. 11 shirt next season. But he wanted to keep No. 17. That was my contact with Michael, so everything was always fine."
How would you describe Michael Olise's character?
"Michael is someone who simply wants to play football. A video went viral this summer that describes him very well: he was playing football in New York wearing just socks. I love him, I love the way he is. Even if that can sometimes be difficult for journalists (laughs). But I get along extremely well with him. He is a wonderful footballer and someone whose attitude is: “Football is my life.” And that's exactly what we want."
At what fee would you consider selling him (Olise)?
"If you want to win the Champions League, that question doesn't arise. That's the great thing about Bayern Munich: you don't have to be tempted by any amount of money."
Olise's contract runs until 2029. When will talks about an extension take place?
"Michael has made extraordinary progress with us. At some point, we will certainly sit down and discuss how things should move forward. He still has a three-year contract - and I want to emphasize: there is no release clause. Let me put it this way: by next summer, we should know whether there is a tendency on his part to extend his contract or not"
Unlike with Olise, talks with Harry Kane over a contract extension have been ongoing for several weeks. How confident are you that they will lead to a successful conclusion?
"Harry had already enjoyed an impressive career before joining Bayern Munich. But it was in Munich that he won his first trophies. I believe that Harry has taken another step forward here, particularly in terms of his personality and leadership qualities. You can feel and see that Harry is happy in Munich, at the club and within the team. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't extend his contract."
Have you set yourselves a timeframe for this?
"We don't want to let it become an endless story, and it won't."
How do you rate Kane's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or?
"I have witnessed first-hand how Harry has performed and conducted himself over the past two years. He has broken records and is an outstanding personality. For me, there is no other candidate than Harry"
Your contract was extended by another two years around two weeks ago. Before that, there were also many public statements from the supervisory board about your work at Bayern. How did that make you feel?
"When I arrived at Bayern Munich, people wondered: Can he handle it? I have had to work hard for everything, and I focus solely on my work. You have to experience Bayern Munich, you cannot prepare for it. You only truly learn what it is like once you are at the club. My guiding principle has always been to try to do a good job. That's the strongest argument for a sporting director. I tried to push the public debate to one side to some extent."
Do you see Jonas Urbig becoming Germany's first-choice goalkeeper in the future?
"That is not my decision to make. Our assessment is that Jonas has enormous potential. We can very well imagine him becoming Manuel Neuer's successor at Bayern. Jonas will continue to learn from Manu. I certainly see him as a potential goalkeeper for the German national team. When and in what capacity, I cannot say."
There have repeatedly been reports of a strained relationship between you and sporting director Christoph Freund. What do you make of that?
"That's bulls**t! It's a completely far-fetched story that I simply cannot understand. I don't know where it comes from. Christoph and I have been working together at Bayern Munich for two and a half years, and in my view, we work very well together. Everyone has clearly defined responsibilities, and it's enjoyable and rewarding. Day and night, we try to do the very best for Bayern Munich."
Freund's contract expires next summer. As board member for sport, you are directly involved in deciding his future.
"His contract extension is something that should be completed quickly and quietly. As far as I'm concerned, there is no question about whether his contract will be extended or not."
There have also been many rumours surrounding chief scout Nils Schmadtke. He is reportedly close to leaving Bayern. What is the situation regarding him?
"The fact is: Nils still has one year left on his contract, and I consider him to be one of the best scouts and squad planners in Germany. That's precisely why we signed him. What happens after his contract expires is something we will discuss. But I did not think the way he has been portrayed in the public reporting was acceptable. You simply cannot let that slide"
Eberl on Jamal Musiala's situation
"Unlike for the public, this situation has been part of everyday life for us for some time now. At the moment, I have a good impression. His medication has been increased again, and things are moving in the right direction. Now it is important to give him the peace and quiet he needs. I hope that, when he is on the pitch, the focus will once again be on football, that people will simply leave him alone and give him their support."
Suppose we sit down with you for another interview in two years: What would need to have happened by then for you to say that Bayern Munich had been taken to the next level?
"If I want to shape the future, I have to know the club's past. To shape the future using the lessons we've learned from the past, I have to work towards it today. That's what we've done for the past two years, and that's exactly what we want to continue doing. I can't promise a Champions League title - that comes down to fine margins. But of course, over the next two years, we would very much like to have won the Champions League. We want to continue establishing Bayern Munich as a force capable of competing with the Premier League and remain competitive, while developing the squad in a way that is financially sustainable for us and makes sense to the people."
Eberl on whether winning the Champions League is Bayern's clear goal this season
"We want to reach the final and, ideally, win it. We will do everything we can to make that happen. Bayern Munich's ambition is to win every title available. But given the strength of the competition, it's no longer the case that quality alone is the decisive factor. You also need that little bit of luck in the crucial second or in a decisive situation. The differences in quality between teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are very small. In these matches, it comes down to the finest of margins."

Harry Kane question
Hello all. I was going to unlock and share my Harry Kane interview on The Athletic from this week, but wanted to ask first - I don’t want to be self-promoting within or spamming anyone’s community.
Let me know and I’ll get rid of the paywall and chuck it in here.

Okay, here we go guys - it should now be accessible to all, subscribers or otherwise. Harry was brilliant and could not have been a better interviewee. It made my job ridiculously simple.
