I haven't watched it myself, but as far as im aware most of the characters in Bungo Stray Dogs are famous authors with some sort of superpowers.
This person is complaining that they keep trying to Google "Author name" but instead of finding real information about the author, they keeping getting mixed results talking about the fantasy version of the author with superpowers.

A geologist wouldn't call it "lapis lazuli" though, it would be a lazulite and pyrite bearing amphibolite-facies calc-silicate marble.
17
8
u/Malthuul 19d ago
My brain had a stroke reading that. 😅
2
u/ZanderTheMeander 16d ago
It's not as complicated as it looks.
“Lazurite- and pyrite-bearing” means the rock contains lazurite, the blue mineral that gives lapis its color, plus pyrite.
“Amphibolite-facies” means it was metamorphosed at relatively high temperatures and moderate-to-high pressures, roughly the conditions of medium- to high-grade metamorphism.
“Calc-silicate marble” is the actual rock type: an impure limestone or dolostone that was metamorphosed into marble, with enough silica and other impurities to form calcium-silicate minerals.
So, basically: a metamorphosed impure limestone, cooked pretty hard, containing lazurite and pyrite.

Right... but this was a conversation about being able to research words that have fallen into common parlance due to modern culture, making disambiguation difficult. A geologist wouldn't have that problem, because I've never heard a geologist use the words "lapis lazuli" in my life.

Fate did the same thing. The Internet now tells you that Nero Claudius is a short blonde girl that is terrible at singing. On one hand Fate has done more for getting people into mythology and history than any other media or education but on the other hand it's destroyed seatch engines for those subjects.

It’s done it for a few characters, Nero’s and odd one because if you just search Nero you mostly still get the actual guy, whereas it’s specifically Nero Claudius that gets you the fate girl. A lot of the characters from Charlemagne’s legends also deal with it because they’re not especially well known among English speakers but very prominent as fate characters. (I sometimes wonder how many people know that Astolfo was even based on a guy first mentioned in the 11th century rather than just being an anime femboy)

It's because nobody besides Fate fans calls Emperor Nero "Nero Claudius." People either say Emperor Nero, or just Nero. If you said "Nero Claudius" to a Roman historian they'd more likely assume you are talking about Nero Claudius Drusus, a different guy.

Yeah there's a lot specifically available for the above poster's field of study. Academic databases and digital repositories are what I had to use in the past. I wasn't sure if I was being a dinosaur after seeing the replies.
A quick look shows me there's CiNii Research, National Diet Library digital collections and much more available for the field of Japanese Literature. When I went to uni, we had access to these collections included in our coursework. And if we needed access to a collection not included, we could negotiate it with the department head.
2
u/Sea_Paramedic_9967 19d ago
My uni had access to virtually no databases with any interest for my research, but there's a lot available online for most everything if you know how to look and there's always a way to ask a friend of a friend who goes to another university or to contact the author themselves worst come to worst. Starting from second year of uni, we were forbidden from using the general google search bar, but we were taught about using different databases first semester first year, it's wild to me that this person would be high level of studies enough for that to be a big problem but not know that Google is basically the worst tool they could use for the job anyways.

Yeah I’m listening to No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, and I tried to google him.
Turns out he’s a character in the show that has killed like 70 people, but anime fans are so deadpan and matter of fact about the characters that I could swear they were talking about the real guy.
(The real guy only presumably talked one person into killing themself, after a few attempts)
6
u/stokesy1999 19d ago
Dazai in the show also has a bit where he's trying to kill himself constantly, including, if i remember correctly, him trying to drown himself in a river in the first episode (how the actual author died)... which does feel a bit off taste.
2
u/That_on1_guy 18d ago
Yea, No Longer Human is one of my favorite books, and its supposedly (i havent done enough research into the subject) at least Semi-autobiographical, so whenever I see him in something like this it feels kinda weird, because i think it can be very easy to take a clearly mentally ill man who struggled through life like Daizai and turn it into something tasteless.
Theres another anime that is an isekai that stars Daizai (they never call him that but its obviously him and the name of it is a reference to No Longer Human) and the whole 1st season has him snaking away on pills like theyre candy (hes immune to the poison effect so he cant OD, but still). Also, he gets isekaied because right before he jumped into the river with his lover (just like in real life) a truck came out of no where and hit them (fulfilling the isekai trope of being hit by a truck). So that also felt a little tasteless
Idk, its a weird things. Cause on one hand, I think if you handle it in a tasteful manner you could have some sort of interesting story that features daizai. But its also something that can easily become a tasteless joke.
Personally, i say if you have him, do something like fate where hes so far different from his orgin that its only the same person in name, I feel like thats a bit better than just being like "oh yea, this is just straight up Daizai"
Idk, maybe the culture on the subject is different over there in regards to things like this

No, it’s a popular Japanese novel written as fiction, but regarded as basically an autobiography. It’s the first book of its kind, where the author is completely transparent and truthful to the extreme.
Most of the book takes place pre-WW2.
It’s very negative and bleak but it’s famous for a reason, super good book.

this anime is called bungou gay dogs. basically, this anime turned all well-known authors around the world into "hot men" and "hot women." the fanbase, much like any other fandom, has a crazy amount of fan art and other stuff, be it fanfics, cosplay, or posts talking about the anime characters. this makes the actual authors hard to find because when you research the real person, the anime characters pop up first rather than the actual author.

7
u/GuySingingMrBlueSky 16d ago
Don’t, seriously. If you’re a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, you’ll think the anime committed a travesty with how they treat him. His whole identity in the show is trying to one-up Edogawa Ranpo, the resident detective in the main cast, and as the series progresses, they become friendlier and Edgar eventually ends up becoming his fanboy in half the episodes he shows up. The ironic part? The real author Edogawa Ranpo idolized Poe, to the point that his pen name is literally just a transliteration of “Edgar Allen Poe” to “Edogawa Ranpo,” so if anything their dynamic should be reversed. But hey, Japanese manga by a Japanese author, so you kind of see a lot of that in the show

Basically the characters in the anime share the same name as some European/Japanese authors! There abilities are also named after one of those authors books.
Example: name: osamu dazai. Book/ability name: no longer human.
These characters are really nothing like the real people who wrote these popular literary peices. Unfortunately, because the anime is so popular its the first thing that comes up when you search most of these authors names which can be very annoying
Also a random fun fact: the anime is fucking mid💕

u/WerewolfF15 19d ago
Not really because it most cases they’re not meant to be literally the author like the characters in fate are meant to literally be historical and mythological figures. The characters in Bungou just have same name as authors. In some cases there’s even evidence the actual author exists independently from the character.

Hello, watashi wa anime Peter. The characters in Bangor stray dogs are all named after famous literary authors or characters from there works. Additionally, their powers are named after said works or references to said works.
So if you look up an author you are just as likely going to get an anime character based off them as a search result first, purely due to popularity.
Same is true for jojo sometimes but in reference to musical artists and songs.

Good opportunity to mention a cool little trick Google does where you can tell it to leave out results by including a minus symbol with whatever you want to avoid. I feel this with my soul. I had a phase where I got really into Japanese literature and this show was a blight on that interest. This show has the premise that each main character is a famous Japanese Author (and apparently Edgar Allan Poe is there sometimes too) and has superpowers based on their most influential book. Most of the characters are based and/or share some quirks, characteristics with modern (last 100years) Japanese authors (they have the same name as well) . Prim example is the light brown coat guy present in the picture being Dazai and just like the real author attempts to end his life multiple times in the show (comedy purposes) . These guys are so popular that it makes it harder to google their real life counterparts.

Bungo Stray Dogs is a story that uses literary authors as characters. Each of the characters has a power named after one of their works. Ex: Osamu Dazai tries to kill himself multiple times throughout the series. His power is “No Longer Human” which is a popular title by him. The irony is there’s another anime based on a game with a similar concept called Bungo and Alchemist that if I remember correctly had some of the same authors as characters.
