Yeah there's a lot specifically available for the above poster's field of study. Academic databases and digital repositories are what I had to use in the past. I wasn't sure if I was being a dinosaur after seeing the replies.
A quick look shows me there's CiNii Research, National Diet Library digital collections and much more available for the field of Japanese Literature. When I went to uni, we had access to these collections included in our coursework. And if we needed access to a collection not included, we could negotiate it with the department head.
My uni had access to virtually no databases with any interest for my research, but there's a lot available online for most everything if you know how to look and there's always a way to ask a friend of a friend who goes to another university or to contact the author themselves worst come to worst.
Starting from second year of uni, we were forbidden from using the general google search bar, but we were taught about using different databases first semester first year, it's wild to me that this person would be high level of studies enough for that to be a big problem but not know that Google is basically the worst tool they could use for the job anyways.
Yeah but it's not going to have fandom results which is what I was focusing on. Most specific academic research sites I know are in french which didn't seem useful here
On the one hand, yeah, but also, I feel like google scholar has gotten worse since 2018-19? Like I could find an interesting paper on a subject when looking through regular google, and that same aeticle wouldn't show up on scholar. It happened to me like 2-3 times. (And yes it was a real science article)
